Great news!  SOE listens to it's customers now!  The apocalypse is upon us, but at least we'll have some great games to play!
Darkfall: UW has all that except arenas (although you can start your own if you like).  Launches on the 20th.

How does it not look like an elder scrolls? The art style & armor are very tes, the mobs are all from the sprpgs, the combat mechanics are oblivion's plus a hotbar and all the footage of the world looks very much like the previous games but with updated graphics (well except skyrim which it isnt too far off)

Argue it all you want.. to me that does not look like any ES game ever made. If you think it does then you have rose tinted glasses on, that's my opinion. Not trying to tell people what to think, just giving my opinion .

I'm not hating on the game. It looks fine but it's just not true to the style of the series. Could still be a very good game though and I look forward to playing it.

Agreed, they still have a LOT of work to do with the combat if they want it to feel like TES.  Also black smoke for sneaking?  Let me be the first to say...[mod edit]

Umm... DAoC is still alive and running, that's not a fail in my mind.

Read it again, where did I say DAOC was a failure?  I mean, it was never that popular, even in the EQ days, but it is still a 10-year-old game design and doesn't need to be rehashed.  Got pretty stale pretty fast.

ESO is going to fail hard.

Yep I can attest to this, been killed by flying guys, guys shooting through walls, guys moving at incredible speed.  One guys killed me and my three buddies with one shotgun blast, and we weren't even bunched up.

There were borders because that was all that was included in the game.

You could go anywhere in the game world you wanted on any character.  Should be the same in ESO.  In Skyrim you weren't banned from Winterhold if you were with the Imperials and you weren't banned from Solitude if you were a Stormcloak.  And you could be neutral if you wanted, not even participate in the war.  Best of all worlds.

Will probably play Planetside 2 at the same time as UW.

UW will take up most of my playtime though I suspect.

They need to unlock races from factions before I'll even consider this game.  That archaic shit is so 2004.

As a Darkfall veteran myself, I am of two minds about this.

I understand the OP's perspective and agree with most of it.

I don't believe Darkfall was perfect by any stretch but it was indeed the "best" of its kind.

I think the direction they are going will indeed bring and keep more new players, which is invariably a good thing both from a gameplay and business standpoint.

However, I do think there was a way to solve the issues without creating safe zones.  Safe zones, to me, is a lazy solution.  An actual crime and punishment system, bounty system, etc could have been a lot more immersive while still being able to allow the "kill anyone anywhere anytime" freedom that this game created.

Personally, once I leave that safe zone I will never return to it, so I don't really have to worry about it, and I do like the idea of a lawful area populated by a large amount of newer or peaceful players, but I wish there were NPC guards, and actual disabling and arrest system.

I mean, I've always thought it was way too easy, unrealistically so, to be a murdering thieving bastard in these games.  I myself am a murdering thieving bastard, but I think if there was a lot higher stakes to it, murderers and thieves would have a lot more fun.

The only people who would be negatively affected are cowards and gankers.  Just jumping someone in the wild and killing them is not ganking IMO, that's just a fight.  Specifically targetting noobies however, is ganking, as well as pointless and cowardly.  And also...no fun.  Just boring and easy.

FPS style of combat takes big deal of RPG out of the game, imo and I am happy to hear they see TES combat as weak spot to improve.

Improving would be adding to it, not taking away from it.

Having played a ton of WoW and its clones, raiding and PvPing while watching tv, I can tell you no matter how many hotbar slots you have, you can pull that stuff off with your eyes closed.  It is all memorization and rotation.  Once you memorize, that's it, game over.  It's math, pattern recognition, which means it is repetitive at best.

But with twitch combat, it is always unpredictable, dynamic and you have to be on the ball.

I like to play games, not have games play themselves.

So to clarify.

It is NOT 100% like Skyrim...

...YET.

Going by this it's actually more engaging.

 

If you've ever played an Elder Scrolls game, TESO's controls will be immediately familiar to you. WASD moves your character, the mouse controls where you're looking/aiming (no tab-targeting here, folks), spacebar jumps, shift sprints... you get the idea. The combat controls are also taken directly from previousTES titles. Clicking the left mouse button will swing your weapon, whereas holding it down will charge up a power attack and holding right-click will block incoming attacks.

So while we're on the subject, let's talk about combat. I mentioned earlier that TESO varies from previous titles in a few ways, mostly by necessity, and combat is one of those ways. It's obviously very difficult to implement the combat of, say, Skyrim directly into an MMO. And honestly, I always thought that combat was one of the series' weaker points. As a dual-wielding character in Skyrim, I got very familiar with the "strategic" combat style of running up, spamming power attacks, and backpedaling furiously. Maybe it's just me, but I never found it terribly tactical or exciting. TESO captures the spirit of the series' combat in a way that is better-suited to an MMO environment, and in my opinion, considerably more engaging.

There is nothing "more engaging" than having complete control.  The more things that are automated, the less engaged a player is.
