Personally, whenever I play other RPGs like Dragon Age, or the Witcher (or most MMORPGs), for example, I always find myself wishing for more engaging, visceral, tactical combat like Skyrim has.

Faked combat is always SO boring.  Combat in those games feels like a chore, whereas in Skyrim I'm actually excited to get into a fight because it can be very unpredictable.

so confused how is TES combat more tactical than dragon's age?

Because you actually have to use tactics in order to win a battle, ie: timing, maneuvering, use of environment, skill at aiming all comes into play, whereas Dragon Age is more about strategy, pausing the game and queueing up attacks on various characters.

That's how, people get the terms "tactics" and :strategy" confused all the time.

In modern war, strategy is an overall battle-plan, tactics are the moment-to-moment decisions on the field.

Nothing like an enemy getting RIGHT in your face to make you feel like your life is in danger, ha!

Chivalry doesn't seem to be going for realism, that's more Mount&Blade's bag.  Chivalry is trying to be like a medieval melee version of UT basically, objective-based, fast-paced combat (or as fast-paced as the setting will allow).

It's way more fun playing in its moment-to-moment than any MMORPG with boring tab-targeting dice-roll fake combat, that's for damn sure.

that combat system in a mmo would be amazing.

Fixed.

Well okay, somebody made a Morag Tong guild.  Now THAT is tempting.  Too bad they won't be able to actually assassinate people except in RvR LOL.

I am not a big fan of skill restrictions like this in MMO. I didn't like it in Guild Wars1.

What bothers me, is that TESO will have weapon skills as well as special class skills. But all of these suppose to go on a limited 6 slot action bar.

I much prefer the GW2 method, which gave extra slots for weapon skills, and gave slots for players to make something more unique.

Really hope the developers can make the 6slot system fun, since even in GW2's spammy limited action bar system, it gets boring fast.

Heh and the purists scoff at the idea of having a hotbar in the first place.

I love a limited hotbar like was implemented in GW2, TSW, and GW1.  It forces choice onto the players instead of this crapfest of a billion hotbar slots like in WoW, Rift or other games.

Holy shit, you're never going to believe this.

We...agree.

I wouldn't expect this game to be like Morrowind or any of the Bethesda single player sandboxes.I wouldn't get your hopes up in that aspect.

I seriously hope ESO doesn't fall prey to changing their own lore just because of whining of a feature not being liked by a minority of gamers. Elder Scrolls has been around for quite a few years and no one has ever complained in the past about race restricted factions set in stone by the lore, so yes, those whining about this topic are in the minority.

Because there have never been any race-restricted factions in any of the games.

Even the most racially charged factions, like the Great Houses in Morrowind or the Stormcloaks in Skyrim, you could join as any race as long as you proved your loyalty.  Hell you could become Nerevarine as a damn Orc!

The restriction makes no sense in the lore, and only waters down the dynamic nature and freedom associated with TES.

It is an archaic carry-over from DAOC and in that game, made things get pretty stale and single-minded after a while.  It did NOT promote actual loyalty as some might think, it just forced it.

Now SWG, THAT was a game with true, fervent LOYALISTS in the empire or rebellion (technically JTL had three factions with the smuggler's guild), because they chose to be part of a faction and worked for it, instead of just being forced into it.

Regardless however, DAOC was never based on an IP that prided itself on freedom and exploration over any other element, so the arument is irrelevant.  Nobody was ever anticpating DAOC saying to themselves "Oh my god we get to explore ALL of Camelot!?  I've always wanted to do that!!!"  That's exactly what has been said about TES.

You shouldn't have to be an altaholic just to get your money's worth.

Lastly, if they let people be neutral and roam the world, it hurts NOBODY.  It is WIN-WIN.  PvPers will still PvP, PvErs will get the freedom they expect and Role-players will feel immersed in the diversity and integrated cultures that TES has always been about.

Left click is your "basic attack."

Hold right click to block.

Left click while blocking to interrupt.

Action reticule combat is in, but you can use hard traditional tab targeting.  - apparently that's because at the moment the transition from the old tab-target system to the new reticle-target system is not complete. What I read in some of the various previews around the web is that the tab-targeting system will be (according to ZOS statements) completely removed. There might be a soft targeting systme though, with the purpose of only illuminating the selected target  - sort of a visula cue for group-related assignments.

According to this interview with Firor, they are trying to make the combat an aimed system, with no lockons for anything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjA1vN_a6u0

I'll believe it when I see it, but if he's willing to put that out there on camera, +1 for him.

(For reference, Matt Firor's current TESO score is -8999)

What's the point of posting a list like this here? Or did you post it on every other games forums too since there's not a one mmorpg that has such features? The game isnt trying to be a second life, try Arche Age I think it's the closest thing you are looking for, but you'll have to skip it too since there's no "RL gender only", not that it even could be monitored.

That's easy, whatever gender you select when making an account, and you must select one, is the only option when making a character.  Granted you could select a different gender on your account, but that's unlikely.

And yes, I posted this on every other MMO's forums.  Go look if you don't believe me.

Sounds like you just filtered youself out this game.  Why dont you put your money where you mouth is and not play a SINGLE MMO until it offers all these things.  Me thinks you will never play another MMO again as long as you live.

Why do you think I am MAKING an MMO...?

How do you deal with that bot that's mining all your nodes?

That's BS... if you're getting ninjaed by a bot in mining nodes you are probably afk in the same place for hours.
How do you get back that guy that kicked you right at the end of the boss fight so he could ninja the loot?
That's not possible anymore and when it did... same as other games. You grow a mature brain and enjoy life.
How do you stop the guy that trained a bunch of mobs onto you?
BS
How do you stop the guy that watches you clear a path to the named quest mob then rushes in and grabs it at the last minute for the lolz? Again, you grow a brain and stop clearing the path and play mind tricks with that guy.
How do you do the raid progression without encountering gear score nazis? You join a guild.

So pretty much "grow a brain."  Same thing the other side might say to the carebears.  Nice way of illustrating the OPs point.

I personally love FFA full-loot PvP.

I am terrible at it, a bad pvper, but that isn't why I play them.  I get "ganked" all the time.  Even when my stats are maxxed, I'm just not that good at combat.

I play them because there's nothing more exciting than living with that constant fear of death/robbery looming over everything you do.  It completely changes my mentality towards the game and immerses me wholesale in the world.

That said, I would love to see a game have an actually robust crime and punishment system in place, instead of just what Darkfall and Mortal have, which is basically a flagging system.  The towers in DF and the guard in Mortal are inadequate in the pursuit of negative reinforcement.

Murderers, thieves and criminals should have a hard life in those worlds, having to lay low, etc.  I think DF:UW will have this a bit more handled due to everyone starting as blue, and reds only really being murderers/criminals.  Anti-PKers will have a much easier time IDing PKers.

Very much looking forward to it!

A thousand years is not enough time for that drastic an evolution.

It's more than likely they look different lore-wise due to the Hist, which changes their appearence, as it did between Oblivion and Skyrim.

But in reality, they did it so they wouldn't have to make new models for all the helmets.  Lazy fucks.

Here is a quote: “it is always foolish to think of whole races sharing like minds.”

Can anybody guess where this quote is from?

[SPOILER WARNING]

IT'S FROM THE NUMANTIA INTERCEPT LETTERS - AN IN-GAME TEXT IN TES GAMES!!!

Sadly not, since it's all online.  They could have given maybe one map as a demo, but demos don't do companies any favors these days.

Anyway, point is, if ESO had this combat, it WOULD perhaps live up to the hype some people are giving it.

Personally, it is just that much fun, visceral and intense (without being too fast-paced to be seemingly unfair), that I would play ANY MMO that had combat like this, even Hello Kitty Online!

Why would I get anything for saying it. I simply made a resonal constraint separating success and failure, then applied it to MMOs. It's the truth.

Everyone is fully aware that you work for Zenimax and Bethesda's PR department.

Actually I work for Exxon Mobile as a geologist. Care to try again?

Relax man, it's okay.  You're just doing your job, I get that.  You don't have to lie.

I admit, this thread is a pretty clever way to set up your company's game as the...what did you call it?  Oh yeah "savior of MMOs."

Cool stuff.

Saw a thread on TES forums about this (I'm banned from there but can still read it - I was naughty and told them I didn't like the direction of the game...whoops).

I really like the OPs ideas, particularly idea 3, but I think 1 would be good too:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1418917-faction-locking-opposes-faction-loyalty-poll-possible-solutions/

Here's the content so you don't have to click, I feel like this guy took the words outta my mouth.

SITUATION: Three factions. Three races per faction. Factions are locked into PvE zones, which are approximately 1/3rd of the total landmass of Tamriel, not counting the PvP zone Cyrodiil.

PROBLEM: A player who wants to explore all of Tamriel MUST roll at least three characters, one in each faction, to do so.

This we can all agree on. This has now been confirmed by multiple sources.

This practice will do the exact opposite of its intention. Its intention is to promote faction loyalty, whereas instead, most players will roll one character per faction, and thus dilute the loyalty that we've seen in other 3-way PvP games like Planetside and DAOC*.

Granted there will be some players who will stick to their own faction, but knowing that most MMORPG players are alt-rollers if not alt-a-holics, this will be the minority.

Personally, I am not an alt-a-holic. I like to have one character and stick with that character from beginning to end.

Certainly many players will have a main, but we cannot discount the psychological implications of having characters in other factions leading to a lack of faction loyalty.

SOLUTION #1: Simplest solution. Players start as neutral. Players can journey to anywhere in Tamriel and quest, except for Cyrodiil. Each faction is still race-locked. At any time between level 10 and level 50, players have the option to join up with their race's faction and participate in PvP in Cyrodiil. If they do, they are warned that they will no longer be able to visit those other lands. If they sign up, they are now only able to go to their faction lands and Cyrodiil.

SOLUTION #2: A little more freedom. Same as solution #1, except that factions are not race-locked. However, if you are a race that wishes to join a different faction than the one that owns your race's lands, then you must go through a loyalty quest-line in their lands to earn the right to side with them and get them to trust you.

SOLUTION #3: The open pvp solution. Same as solution #2, except even after you have chosen a faction, you CAN still enter the other factions lands. You will be kill-on-sight to any faction NPCs or players, however.

Why do I find this so necessary? I personally believe that not only would any one of these create a more dynamic world, but it would enable players who wanted to experience the whole game on one character to do just that.

Please fill out the poll, I'll be interested to see how those fall, as they do pertain to the topic.

Also, if anyone has any other potential solutions to the problems presented above, please have at it! And let's please try to keep the discourse civil. It's fine if you disagree that this is even a problem in the first place, but try not to be too knee-jerk about it.

*In DAOC I played on an FFA server. I'm not sure if on other servers factions were locked into their zones, but it is irrelevant since DAOC was not based on any IP that its fans wanted to intricately explore.

I really hope they listen on this issue too, like they are sorta doing with the combat.  Neutrality would be awesome, and I think by and large the current system will be an annoying "worst of both worlds" situation.

Your recent round of hype has raised ESO above 7.0 on MMORPG's hype meter!

Too bad you're still 3rd to last but it's better than 2nd to last!

Baby steps, you still have a LOT of work to do and changes to make before you get a real audience.
