This is your weapon type, you picked this class, its all you get, decision they made, It was my biggest issue with TERA as well, I just think its so lazy on developers.  I know there is a slight bit of variation on weapons in WS but not really.

I just dont understand how a game made in 1997 (Asheron's Call) could get weapons so right, and games nowadays just seem so lazy

It's not lazy at all.

It has more to do with being Iconic.

Just like one thinks of "The Lone Ranger" and his guns or Robin Hood's bow, or King Arthur and Excalibur, or Zorro and his Rapier or Odysseus's spear.

The idea is that their weapon is part of their identity, it's what they have trained in, mastered.

A gunslinger isn't going to attack you with a mace.

Heros and Villains and their chosen weapons are ingrained in the literature.

remember...

A "Red Ryder BB Gun" or "old blue" is more than just a joke in a movie.

There are "reasons" and then there are "excuses."  I think you'll find this falls into the latter category.

It's an outdated, pointless and arbitrary mechanic which only serves as the path of least resistance for developers and class balance.

Bought 6 months.  VR8.  Loving it!

I remember playing this because at the time I was obsessed with Daggerfall and this was basically as close to an online Daggerfall as I had seen.  First-person, sprite based MMORPG.  So awesome.

I was always more into Elder Scrolls style than, say, Baldur's Gate style so I definitely clicked with Meridian more than UO (though I played both for years).

Very tempted to revisit it.  Some amazing elements to this game that few studios have the balls to attempt these days.

Thanks in advance!

I would not look here.  I would check out teso-rp.com to find a guild of your liking.

I wouldn't play a sandbox game and I have zero interest in co-op Skyrim.  As in. I would not buy or play either, especially the latter.  Sandbox games are not popular for good reason, despite the apparent fascination with them on this website.  I like a game with a story line, thanks, and ESO serves just fine in that regard.

I would like the option to have the vet leveling be different, while retaining the current setup (e.g. let people level up in the vet ranks through PvP if they'd prefer as an alternative.)  This is for the PvP crowd - current set up is OK for PvE.

Same here, but you can have the best of both worlds.  This game could have retained its solid story but not been so linear/zoned in other ways.

There are 4-5 major progression quest-lines per zone, the Main Quest and the 2 guild questlines.

That being said there are TONS of side-quests that could have been scaled depending on one's level, meaning you could do them at any time, for any reason.

If they'd gone for a skill-based progression system and story-based missions with gold/gear rewards, you would still have

Get rid of the levels and make it skill based.

1 big open world instead of loading screens online

make massive public SOLO dungeons that last longer then 5 minutes, make it double or triple layered and make it hard depending wich zone you are in.
And give some damn REWARD for completing it.

Dolmans idem dito - spawn more enemy's or more spawns, make it 20 to 30 minute zone event and spawn a big phat boss at the end that requires a group of at least 10 players.
And REWARD people with something worth it.

Dungeons should be HARD and REWARD accordingly as i have done all dungeons from low to Vet levels and i often get nothing but a white item or soulgem.......
Fungel Grotto Veteren gets the award for hardest dungeon but often drops nothing -_-

World Bosses - it should have been EPIC boss fight, make it a 50 man raid requirement to down it, make it a challenge for a group that large instead of 2 people killing it and......no REWARD <---its a common theme in eso for effort put in to give nothing worth for the trouble you went trough.

Just a quick tought on how it should have been.....

I think that ESO is in for a world of hurt and isnt going to keep the subs needed to stay afloat in the ruthless world of mmo's that launch sub based.
Not in its current state and carrot on a stick design.
Veteran zones and its quests are a chore and most solo boring road i ever played in almost 2 decades of mmo's.
And the road to V12 "soon' is not going to be more appealing for peopl who already quited the game due to the horrible long solo expirience.

My 2 cents.

he said current tech... it's near impossible to make a game one large open world, you can give the game a seamless feeling, but there will always have to be load screens etc... or people would have to be using unrealistic specifications on machines to play it, not to mention the server hardware, and no.. your $3000 gaming PC wouldnt cut it.

Thats Bullshit to the misinformed.....There are already MMO's with large worlds (not zoned) one example www.wurmonline.com....written in Java....Huge server worlds!!

with graphics that looked like 3d ultima online... read my post above, there is technical limitations i'm talking about about MMO's with graphics that dont look like from the 90's running in java

The lower your Poly / Texture maps are the greater the distance you can load into your ram. look at it that way.

Darkfall 1, another great example of a massive seamless world.  A lot more polygons than Wurm too.

http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/1/15040/904992-dfvswowflatbigcopyeh8.gif - compared to one of WoW's continents.  Game was released in 2009.

Forced grouping with proper support roles and expanded group size*

This 4-man group size nonsense needs to stop.

You can have up to 24 people grouped in the overworld, to tackle the "ordinary quests" the OP is referring to.

4-man is only for instanced dungeons.  And you need at LEAST a healer if not both a healer and tank.

OP: I have been soloing up to VR8 so you're either bad at the game or you gimped your build.

Have them made any improvements to the engine at all?

Last time I played I could not stand the controls.  Is it a proper shooter yet?

Really want to love a game like this but wow they really made this one hard to get into.

Is that seriously all the reasons you could think of?

So this game is like ESO but not quite as good?

You fanboys have gotta get better at giving this company free publicity.

Like, come on, where's Wildstar's version of this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgfp87eUprc - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8luBc0X3vIg - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foP3CnK2MI8

Oh wait here they are:

Not quite 20+ reasons but close enough.

But seriously if that's all you're interested in idk why you're not playing any of the other games that offer these things.

I played ESO for one week and uninstalled it. I don't like quest treadmills. Have not played AA but your post made want to reply. If you like ESO you should easily like WOW, SWTOR,GW2, as they are the same game with different pictures and quest.

If you want a real game that is fun and different try Secret world.  Not to mention if your playing Alpha how could you even expect a polished game that would compare to anything released?

Yeah for the record, I am enjoying ESO a lot but I mostly dislike the other games you listed so your assumption doesn't quite hold up.  WoW I played for years because all my SWG friends went there and I really hated every second of it.  SWTOR was just bad all around, and GW2 was okay but too goofy and over-the-top for my taste.

I think what sets ESO apart from those is the world/lore, stories told via questing and the combat/immersion elements.  I've always hated GCD combat and the active combat of ESO is the most compelling combat I've played in a theme park (just shy of Darkfall or Mortal's combat systems) as well as the traditional BS UI crap that comes with most MMOs.

Secret World I found intriguing (played the beta) but the lack of an open world really turned me off and I'm not into that setting.  Class/skill system seemed pretty cool and the storytelling was well laid out but still very closed off, even for a theme park.

I suppose it really is a "move on" situation as many have suggested.

I tried again, and failed, to get into it.  I went exploring with the HUD turned off, saw some other players mucking about, got killed by wildlife, all of which is great but...it just felt so empty.  Also was told by a player there's no taming?  Which is my #1 thing for a sandbox so that was :/.  Really miss the days of being a creature handler in SWG.

I guess ESO will keep me for a bit longer, though it's almost total lack of sandbox elements is a real shame.

Still waiting on the sandbox MMO that gets it right I suppose...wonder if we'll ever see it?

EDIT: for the record the ! and ? graphics, while they have been around for years and have only been minorly annoying, I have never seen them so poorly made as in this game.

Played since 5-day head start, only have one character, Dunmer EP Nightblade, at level VR6 (about to be VR7).

That said I have not been rushing.  I have been questing a lot but I make a point to listen to all the dialog and I refuse to spend money on fast-travel (so I take the time to go to wayshrines in order to travel anywhere).  I did have the Imperial Horse since day 1 though so that probably sped things up and I have been playing maybe 6-8 hours a day on average.

I really think taking your time and not rushing to the end is the key to enjoying this game.  Haven't felt so immersed in a world for a long, long time.

There are plenty of other games with more users than WoW, WoW is just the largest western MMO, not the most-played game on the planet.

Well OP your two big cons, the quests and traditional tab target are two things many of us would be willing to over look in our quest for a little bit of freedom.  It sounds like all you did was quest.  It also sounds like you are the type of MMO'er that needs to be told a story.  This is supposed to be a virtual world with the quests just be a side note, not the only thing you can do (looking at ESO).  You also shouldn't need to be told a story in a virtual world...you make your own story.  Did your guild tell you to solo grind quest to quest just like ESO?  Are you in a guild?

I have no guild but I was just sorta following the progression of the game.  Even in sandbox games I do that to begin with just to get the hang of things.  It didn't seem all that free and seemed a bit linear, (the horrendous map system doesn't help that much).  I'd love to go out and PvP but I feel very weak at level 10 and I'm worried it would be an exercise in futility.

Having played SWG, UO and Darkfall more than any other MMOs, having no direct story isn't bothersome.  What is bothersome is lack of context, making you feel like you're in a lived-in world, which all three of those games did really well for their time.

So far my own story has been doing errands for NPCs along a set path.  I have heard AA called a "Sand-park" but should it really be "Theme-box" if it starts with the theme park stuff and then gets sandboxy later on?  I imagine if I stick with it I will start to see the freedom, or am I really missing it right from the start?  Can I go off and have compelling adventures without any quest markers right after I wash up on that shore or do I have to stick to the themepark until it becomes a sandbox?

It seems to me from the OP that he didn't take on board the fact he was paying his $150 to join an alpha. Most of his cons relate to it being an unfinished product. As for the questing, that's just to introduce new players to the various game systems. If he thinks its all about questing he can't have played very much.

Oh so the UI, combat, lack of first person and stuff is all temp?  That's good, I didn't really find anything broken or buggy, but good to know that that stuff will change/improve.

two different games. If you're into single player story mode quest game, ESO is 1000000x  times better.

If you want to just run around and do stuff without being told, Archeage is your game.

Most people can't stand games like Archeage. I think ESO is the right game for you. Despite all the problems in ESO, it's my favorite single player MMORPG.

Well as I said above, sandbox is my preference.  UO, SWG and Darkfall 1 are my most-played MMOs by far.  DAOC behind that and WoW behind that (but that was only because so may of my friends went from SG to WoW).  I also played a fair amount of Wurm online which tells you I can put up with the shittiest of gameplay if there are awesome features to be found.  I'm just not finding them in AA.

The "stuff" you mention, what is it?  Aside from PvP and ship battles which I am guessing I'm too low level to take part in yet, is it just mob grinding and mat collecting, or is there other stuff I haven't seen yet?  Can I rob people?  Can I build a cabin somewhere in the woods?

Alright so just wanted to relay my experience with the alpha.

I gambled my $150 based on the feature set of AA.  I always knew I'd hate the art-style and the UI but those are just taste things and I can get over them if the game is compelling enough.

I have been playing ESO since launch and honestly I think it totally spoiled me.

AA is very "old school" and not in a good way.  It reminds me a lot of the current way DAOC starts.  But I want to love it as it has SO many features that I've wanted from a well-made game for so long like FFA PvP, naval combat, etc.

Here's what I got out of it.

PRO:

- It's very pretty

- The animations are fantastically crafted

- FFA PvP

- Justice System

- Naval combat

- Sitting just about anywhere

CON:

- No quest VO

- Overbearing, unimmersive UI

- Painful connect-the-dots questing

- Boring, unimaginitive and grindy, 10-year-old combat

- No context or immersion into the world

- Unconnected story-less collect/kill quests

- The freaking awful ! and ? graphics really bother me for some reason

- God-awful movement controls

- Ridiculously unintuitive menus

- The freakin' popups

- Old-school camera system with no true first person

- Global Cool-downs

- Nameplates freakin' EVERYWHERE by default

STUFF THAT IS A CON BUT DOESN'T BOTHER ME AND/OR WILL OBVIOUSLY BE FIXED:

- Art-style (personally prefer realistic/gritty/western)

- Non-translated text (I wonder what it all means!)

Seriously, I want to love this game, but it gives me a headache and I honestly think ESO's immersive, minimal UI, believable art-style, story-drive questing and action-based combat REALLY spoiled me for older-school games like this.

So I'm asking for people to tell me whether or not it gets better and if I should stick with it and why they are loving it (since a lot of people CLEARLY do).  If I am looking for an immersive, engaging experience, should I stick with this?  Cuz right now it seems like a typical mindless Asian grind-fest with some cool features tacked on.

I tried to get into AA but I just can't.  ESO has spoiled me.  Starting up AA felt a lot like trying to get back into DAOC.  It felt incredibly outdated and while it was pretty, it was SO boring.

I just can't go back to GCD timer-based non-real-time combat.

So many amazing features in AA that I wish were in ESO but the core gameplay, right down to the movement controls, annoying, stale combat, ridiculously over-the-top interface, and the god-awful 10-year-old questing systems just turn me right off.

I'm VR6 and I'd say it's the best theme park in a long time, overall better (read: more fun) than Rift, GW2, Secret World, LOTRO, EQ2, SWTOR, Aeon, Tera, and pretty much every AAA MMO since WoW.  Also, it's better than WoW.

That being said, it's still not great like it could have been, and there's a lot of basic stuff still missing.  But it's early yet and hopefully they improve it.

WOW, I had no idea!!! Do they look like copy/paste when inside them?

Yes, they do. They're all pretty much identical.

Lol this is terrible. How can anyone be proud of the 30 over dungeons 100 over variations. Copy paste ad nauseam. Go check Everquest for how to do a proper dungeon. Truly sad state.

I agree with the others the social score is way too high.

Yeah how is this good, plus they are not even in the same ball park of what i would call dungeons.

Vanguard had over 100 dungeons at launch(many more now) and all of them different. On top of that some of them take days and weeks to complete and span many levels, dungeons within dungeons.

Vast open world dungeons with multiple mob factions within.

ESO dungeons are just glorified caves.

Guys they're just trying to stay true to Elder Scrolls DUH!  This game starting development right after Oblivion when cut and paste dungeons were ALL THE RAGE!
