So it has nothing to do with the 60k users registered at Darkfalls official forum and the 'Hype Darkfall at MMORPG.com' petition?

No, we spend 22h / day to create new accounts to hype this game and dehype others

True, but you're aggressive with your respons. You just end up banned if you retaliate to much. 'Been there, done that'

Nope loot it and delete it. Scorched earth all the way.

If you can insta delete items then it will suck. But I have some vague memory that you can break items to get material?

That is not true at all. They will take all your stuff just to be a jerk. I remember in UO, you couldn't take someones horse, but they always killed it after they  killed you just to piss you off.

Well if they just lying around your fortress, loot em clean. But as an taktic in war I would have a few runners taking gear from fallen enemies.

But then I don't know how much you can wear. Hopefully we can came up with a good limit during beta.

UO did it to cater to the care bears and attract that type of player which worked for some time. Most people agree though that Trammel was the start of the end for UO. It just became a money maker for EA at that point and they started releasing expansions like Samurai Empire or the elves thing. Just brutal.

The fact that DF creators know that they are likely losing a lot of players (yet attracting a fair bit) by doing full loot, is an indication that they care more for a solid and honest gameplay experience as opposed to being focused on making money themselves.

Having to replace gear leads to a better ingame economy, people actually buy weapons off other players. What a crazy idea.

Khael also made the good point of down time b/w deaths also. Killing someone will actually give an advantage that lasts more than a minute or two on the battlefield and opens up a lot of new strategic decisions.

The problem is the MMO mindset that Risk vs. Reward is basically non-existant.

Risk vs. Reward should be a focal theme for all MMOs.

The fact is that some people are going to lose a lot more than they win. And those people are going to have to spend most of their time farming, and not much time pvping. They will get tired of that and quit the game. Eventually there won't be enough people left to keep the game running. So people who want full loot pvp are really just slitting their own throats.

I doesn't have to be that way. You will encounter enemies and PKers but those who enjoy PvP will most likely fight clan vs. clan. And most guilds will have gear and weapon covered for quick resupplying.

And the basic gear will be cheap if you loose your own.

Alfar will fit the PK players, and most of us hate PK players. And alfar is the most hated race in the lore.

Can't say I'm a big fan of PvP, atleast not in the 'modern' games. But that's cause I don't have same amount of time to play these days, I can't keep up with my mates or guildies which leveling faster than me. So I'm always stucked somewere in the middle.

If I want to gain experience in crafting, well I must level up my char to do crafting. Group with my guildies even if they're higher level than me. Then I'll have no experience gained.

That's why I can't stand levelbased games anymore.

I have seen some of those pics around during the years. But some of em where new ones for me.

Henning Ludvigsen will put his art out at his homepage when the game is released. You can find a few Darkfall related pics there as well. Dated but they're there.

They really need to hire better artists, even the weapons are goofy and unispired.

The silly skull in the axe, the ultra colored halberd... I understand a simplistic modeling, but the art style (or lacking of a solid art style) is almost painful to watch.

Almost all upcoming games have a pretty solid art, from Warhammer to Aion, but the art in Darkfall seems to be worse than almost all big games from the last 6 years.

Mortal has a similar approach, but the art is so superior... keep in mind Im not talking about shaders and polys...

...

Show me what "good" art or "pretty solid art" is.  Thanks.

e- Wait, so, you want influences from known artists or genres to be visible in darkfall?  I have to question what you're saying if you say Warhammer and Aion have solid art.  It's re-adapted art and completely uninspired.  Aion is basically L2, Warhammer is basically a newer permutation of WoW.

These games are portrayed to their audiences graphically through filters to give an anime or cartoony feel.  Darkfall uses a sick, sallow, pale, jaundiced motif in a lot of places.  Maybe the art is evoking the response the artist wanted to get out of you.  Just calling art "bad" is such a cop-out.  Actually, after reading the term you used "solid art style", I find myself not needing to say more.  Find another game that appeals to you more.

Some examples of solid art styles in games and why.

Guild Wars - It has an anime influence, but all inside the game matches , even different cultures, even surreal landscapes, it feels like a complete package.

Same about Aion.

Warhammer online - has a style based on caricature in a dense way, but again, all the world is like that, you have some fantastic armor patterns with "caricature like" characters and a world that matches, Warhammer universe always had a pretty good and coese fantasy artstyle.

Age of Conan - it has a darker and realistic ancient world with some fantasy details, but all matches as a beliveable, fantastic reality, from weapons to creatures.

A solid art style in a movie or game is a pretty clear and "usable" definition, sure, in a post modern era we can use a lot of influences, but it has a better effect when it is "solid".

You want an example of this in movies? Try to imagine a movie with a dramatic story like "Vozvrashcheniye" and use the art direction of "Speed Racer adaptation" and "PI" at the same time... well, you will have a art style that is not solid, like the one in Darkfall.

Now, about Darkfall.

It is a real mess, cartoony weapons side by side with realistic ones, realistic fields with ultra goofy creatures (check that black knight)... the main issue with Darkfall art style is the goofyness that doesnt match with the rest.

In my own personal opinion, the details and patterns used in Darkfall are very unispired.

...

Good answer!

Anyway, I will hold my breath until I played the game. Cause the quality of the media has been a rollercoster. Some screens look amazing but other not that good.

But overall I'm satisfy in what I see. And I think it will look better ingame.

Out of curiosity, which one are you prefering?. They can be looted and used by all races.

Darkfall's Signature Weapons

In Darkfall, player smiths may create any type of weapon, and then imbue it with any combination of hundreds of available enchantments. The general rule is that, if a weapon can be found in the world of Darkfall, you will be able to create it in your smithy, given a high enough skill level and access to the right (and sometimes rare) ingredients.

There is, however, one exception to this rule. Each race has access to one special weapon, the crafting and use of which is so deeply rooted in their culture that smiths from other races cannot make them. These weapons are reflections of the nature of the race, and creating them requires the deep-tuned insights of the born and bred native.

Players may, however, wield the signature weapon of another race, should they be able to acquire one. This is trivial if the player covets the special weapon made by a friendly race, since he can just buy one from a Mastersmith belonging to that race. If the player desires the signature weapon of an enemy race, however, the only option is to pry one from the cold dead hands of a player character.

Alfar: Ilshard
The Alfar signature weapon is a halberd made from a smooth black metal that resembles the exoskeleton of the Black Widow spider. The Ilshard's hooked handle ends in a wicked point resembling a poison stinger, while its axe blade is decorated with a red hourglass shape. The Ilshard deals poison damage in addition to regular damage, and its blade glistens with liquids that drip from it in blackish drops.

Mirdain: Sunbow
This item can only be made using wood from the Tree of All Seeds, a unique tree that grows in the heart of Charybdis, the Mirdain capital. The Sunbow gives off a soft, honey-like light, and it is decorated with simple yet graceful representations of the sun and the acorns of the Tree of All Seeds. Arrows fired from the Sunbow become surrounded by light, and when they impact, the surrounding area is bathed in a lazy rain of golden sparks. Arrows from a Sunbow inflict holy damage.

Dwarves: Ildhammer
The Dwarven signature weapon is a hammer with a head made of molten lava. This fiery head is crisscrossed by bands of ymirsmerke, the rare metal that is sacred to dwarves. Covered in powerful runes, these bands keep the lava hot, while containing the heat to the extent that it is possible to hold the hammer's handle. A viciously strong field of heat distortion surrounds the Ildhammer, and tiny, almost imperceptible tendrils of smoke escape from it.

Humans: Lightbringer
This heavy two-handed sword is made from the metal nidstein, which has the texture of granite rock. Through the center of the nidstein blade runs a relatively thick core of bronze, into which Old Lyonessian runes have been carved. The Lightbringer emanates an aura of light or darkness, the strength of which is directly tied to the alignment score of the wielder. The strength of the aura also indicates the amount of holy or unholy damage inflicted by the weapon.

Mahirim: Ghost Claw
A leather gauntlet hides long, fully retractable claws made of a milky-hued metal called ormham. Found only in the Tribelands, ormham is somehow attuned to the moon Theia. In daytime, only three metal claws emerge when the wearer enters combat, but at night, each claw is surrounded by a thick, almost liquid aura of eldritch light. The reach of the aura-claws, and the amount of damage they inflict, depends on the position of Theia.

Orks: Aldarûk
Working with slabs of obsidian, svartdvergir smiths create the giant heads that are used for the two-handed Aldarûk axe. Priests of the Fire Dragon then perform rituals involving the sacrifice of two sentient beings, whose flesh-stripped and painted skulls are embedded in the axe head. The Aldarûk burns with extremely hot but almost invisible black fire.
