as a huge DAoC fan i couldn't really get into WAR. but also as a general mmorpg fan that has tried every other game released since WoW...what game DID meet the standards of an mmorpg ?
WAR isn't a bad game at all. I can't think of another game released in the past few years thats better. PotBS? Vanguard? AOC? Tabula Rasa? Spellborn? Darkfall? big no to all. Aion, Fallen Earth you think? played them both and bigger no to both.

it gets a bad rap for alot of things, some being valid, others just being that at this point in time, alot of mmorpg fans are jus disheartedned and bored at the entire genre. (which is why this whole aion fad has me so puzzled...the only draw it has is..its a new game to grind)

I disagree about Fallen Earth. The graphics arent all that great, but the game is groundbreaking in its creativitiy and as immersive as EQ1 was. BUT, you have to enjoy a post apocalyptic type setting to enjoy the game. There arent any elves or majestic castles; instead there are trailer partks and junkyards where you scavenge for scrap metal to make guns.

There will always be a special place in my heart for DAOC. I will never forget the times running around Isle of Glass or Aegir Landing doing tasks and killing Mygga. I will never forget the weekend long relic raid battles. The all night sieges going back and forth is about as much fun as I have ever had playing an MMO.

When I heard about the consolidated servers and possible release of Origins, I wanted to get back into game shape so  I resubbed. Lots of memories came back, and things were good. But as I played, something just wasn't right. It took me some time to figure out, but eventually it became pretty clear to me. This is NOT the DAOC that I knew or played. The game has changed irreversibly regardless of origins or not.

One of the best things about DAOC back in the day was you would log on, and take a deep breath and ask yourself "Where am I going to hunt and kill today?" Nowdays, the game sets you on a pretty linear path. It seemed like I was constantly bogged down by quests that I had to do. Class quests, epic quests, ML quests, faction quests....  Even if it wasnt mandatory, it seemed like the game pushes you very hard into the questing system considering the rewards you get in xp and loot for questing. All the teleporting seemed to make horse riding and boat rides useless as well.

After playing for about three weeks, I decided that, although I will always love DAOC for the fun it had given me years ago, its charm is gone and its personality has changed. I really hope the new server does well, and it continues to give people he excitement of open RvR warfare and sieges that it once gave me, but it seems my time in Camelot has truly come to an end.

This is what the "buzz" is about...

Thanks for that link, all the hubub makes sense now. I would prefer origins over the new cluster, so I will be crossing my fingers.

In searching for news on the upcoming changes to the game, I keep reading snippets about people talking about going to origins instead of playing on the new consilidated server. However, I cannot find anything on the Herald talking about bringing the Origins server project back. Can anyone confirm for me what is going on?

Several changes have been brough in over various patches some of the major changes are:

All ML and arti mobs have average respawn of 10 mins - no more waiting hours, days, weeks only to find someone else got there while you were afk.  Alsoyou no longer need the actaul arti to drop, just encounter credit plus the scrolls.

Many of the ML mobs and encounters have had their difficulty reduced - no longer need huge zerg-type raids to get MLs.

new mob type called a afrit (two levels doable by smaller and larger groups) plus elementals (for solo) which give an item which when you have collected five, they combine and you can get items previously only available on ML raids plus the chance they drop decent items when killing afrits.

Scrolls are far far easier to come by .

Both artis and MLs can be bought with your Bounty Points - RvR enough and you can bypass TOA content and still get the rewards

Thanks for the recap. That sounds pretty good actually. I think I may resub :)

TOA is easy now. Not like the old days.

Care to elaborate at all? What has changed?

TOA?

No Thanks.

I do like the idea of Eve and have heard nothing but great things about it. However, I dont think I will ever play Eve because at this point I am so behind the curve of all the established players, that it doesnt seem likely that I would ever be able to achieve too much when competing against all the longstanding veterans. If they ever opened a new server someday I would certainly check it out.

I have been playing POTBS for about 5 days now, and I have to say that it has been a truly revolutionizing experience. The game is far from perfect and has its faults, especially with avatar combat. However, there are certain mechanics and new ideas to this game which I think should become staples in future MMOs.

The first thing that really blew my mind was how different the game is based on your class. In other MMOs, your class really only effects your playstyle and role in a group. In POTBS, your class effects the way the entire game is played and what kind quests / missions you get. If your interested in being a merchant and building warehouse, crafting supplies and controling the marketplace, then the game is going to focus around different types of ships you own and the entire point of going into open seas.

I think this class style is revolutionary and hope more games in the future pick up on this. Instead of being just like everyone else and doing all the same quests,  except being able to us a different type of armor or casting certain spells, this system really makes you feel the game from an entirely diffrent perspective.

Second thing is the ship battles. I must have slain over 100k bears in my MMO life, as well as twice as many goblins and orcs. In POTBS, the ship battles are extremely stategic and fun. Instead of just worrying about Health and mana, you have to watch your speed, your ships firing angle, how many crewman are available, ship morale, HPs for your sails and your hull, and what kind of ammo your using for the particular situation. I personally go with grapeshot style ammo and decimate the opposing ships crew, and then grapple and board them. Or if you for the firepower, just blast them with the heaviest shots you got until their hull is ready to break.

I would say the game isnt for everyone. Its not a very quick satisfaction game and does require some strategy. But its certainly worth giving a go for the free trial and using up all your time. Try different classes and see which one suits your playstyle. For me, being a pirate and getting to steal other peoples ships when I defeat them is pure pleasure to me :)

If you didnt have a pic of a mass murderer as your icon I would consider joining you. But that pic makes me wonder what kind of person you are

Woody. You only need one period between sentences. Your school system has failed you.

But yeah, Warhammer is not such a great game, and Mythic does pull some stunts like this from experience in DAOC. But I dont think its some kind of grand conspiracy.

This is the answer I got.

Yes, when you enter the retail key into your account, the billing date will be moved back 30 days, thus giving you 30 days of free play. Now, depending on how your account was deactivated, you may or may not have to activate it by paying whatever your previous subscription rate was when the account was deactivated. This would be more, for example, if you failed to cancel it and didn't make a payment for the previous subscription. If a payment is required to reactivate, the retail key will still add an additional 30 days of free play on to it.

Ok, I think I got this now. They will not let you add an expansion key to an account that is not currently active. You have to pay the $15 (or whatver you decided) to get it activated again, which gives you 30 days of playtime. Now, when you activate the key, it gives you another 30 days, pushing back the next charge to 60 days.

So if I want to play this game on my old account, I will have to pay the $15 to turn it back on. Hmmm, not sure what I am gonna do.

Could anyone suggest a good server for a someone starting a completely new account? hehe

Thank you~

And also thank you too seabass2003

I can look at the forums, so I will continue to monitor both threads to see what answer I get. Great help from you two, I really appreciate it.

If you went with digital download no free time. All others I am pretty sure give you free time added even to an old account. I'm not positive but I am pretty sure I remember people talking about this on the official forums. Might want to check around just a bit more before you do anything like make a new account. I wouldn't know like other people because I have the lifetime so I just buy expacs and away I go. I'll try to check it out for you though.

From what I found the complete and collector's edition give you an extra 30 days, the digital does not. Hope that helped.

This is what I was thinking as well, as the account help FAQ alludes to this but isnt exactly specific to my situation. Unfortunatly unless your account is active, you cannot post on the official forums to ask. I'll poke around and see what  I can find.

Thanks for the help.

Sometimes i just have to laugh. Thanks......

Was my question really that ridiculous? I figured since the box says 30 days free, it would be strange to give 30 days free to some players and not to others. Since this is an all inclusive pack, I wasnt sure if it was an across the board 30 days free to anyone who buys and activates.

I guess I will just make a new account.

Hi there, just a quick question.

My account has been deactivated for about a year, but with all the accolades the new expansion is getting, it has been difficult to ignore.

I have purchased the new expansion, but will adding this expansion to my turbine account reactive my LOTRO account and give me 30 days free? Or will I still be responsible for paying to get the account reactivated?

I ask this because in my past gaming experiences, expansions did not give free game time. Back in EQ, if you bought an expansion that was great an all, but it did not have anything to do with your account's current subscription.

I know I can always make a new account to get the free 30 days, but if I could get my old characters back by using my old account, that would be even better.

Thanks for your help.

I understand both of your concerns.

As much as I did have fun in RvR, I always also enjoyed the PvE aspect of DAOC. I always thought it was just as good, in fact better actually, than EQs. So even though RvR would be lacking in regards to this guild, the PvE aspect of hitting all those old dungeons, like Spindel or Trollheim, or that one big city out in Albion SI zone (the name slips my mind) would be pretty awsome for me.

There are a couple popular MMO blogs run by individual gamers who are a part of a guild called "Nostalgia" in EQ (and EQ2 as well I think). Essentially what they do is play the game from the start, using the areas and items only available to them that would have been there when the game was young and in its prime. They level up together and do specific dungeons in order of level progression.

In a way, they are a guild that self imposes a progression style server environment, completely free of  the influence of the bigger and greater things going on around them.  This gives them the opportunity to rediscover and replay some of the most memorable aspects of the game, the way it was meant to be played, without all the new super gear one is able to get from newer expansions.

I am not a part of Nostalgia in any way, but I admire their desire to replay such a game in this manner. Had I learned of them earlier when they first started and before they got too far ahead in levels, I surely would have tried to join.

I am wondering if there is any interest from old DAOC players who would like to do the same things with DAOC? We could start a guild, agree to meet and play once or twice a week, and level up together in the old lands and doing dungeons for all our equipment and money, you know, like games used to be. Of course the game has changed a bit, especially a lot of the starting areas so we would have to discuss the rules further and get some concrete ideas on how to do it. But if Mythic wont give us the origins server, lets make our origins style guild and enjoy the game the way it was meant to be enjoyed, before it is gone forever.

Is anyone interested? If so please respond here and also please spread the word to VN boards to see if anyone is interested there as well. I have a loathing for VN, but I know it is still a hotbed of DAOC activitiy so it would be a great place to ask others as well. Let me know what you think.

Hi I am interested in trying the "come back" weekend however I have a question about the different versions for downloading. I want the high defintion resolution client, but I am wondering if my original discs I bought when the game came out contains the this client or the standard resolution client. It seems like I could save a ton of time just re installing instead of downloading 8 gigs.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I play a SW and I believe that I play the class fairly well and utilize most of the tools offered to me. That being said, we are definetly the weakest of the bunch.

I see a lot of people saying "Root" tanks and get away to a distance again. Well let me tell you, I dont know what other classes get, but EVERYTIME I get a tank up close and I use my AOE root, I too am also snared and they still manage to womp me over the head two or three times before I am out of range. Once out of range, their thrown axes are wopping me at a rate doing nearly as much damage to me as I can do to them with their heavey armor on. So this idea that rooting is somehow some huge tool that bad players arent using is a falsehood.

Second, as far as DPS goes, anyone who thinks tanks are our "buffets" is missing something. Their HPs and heavey armor make my arrows seem like im peppering them with spitballs instead of sharp pointy objects. The fact is I dont even bother shooting tanks anymore, its just a waste of time and energy. Yes, its that sad.

What dissapoints me most with the Shadow Warrior is this.... there is nothing about the class that is either "Shadow" nor "Warrior". As a "Shadow" Warrior, we should have a limited stealth ability or at least a positional bow ability that does massive DPS. IE, we strike from the shadow where no one is looking. As a Shadow "Warrior" we should be able to wear at least medium armor like the WH, or duel weild like the DK. Hell in the opening video the SW is duel wielding.... when do I get that?

All that being said, I do like the SW class and feel that it has potential. I know that .... wait let me reiterate... I KNOW that Mythich realizes how underpowered and gimped this class as and will do something to help it out very soon. When that happens, I will be in a great position to have a pre established FOTM class, and wont need to roll one from scratch! lol
