The complaints mostly rave about

- its not Skyrim... ( but then if  you want to play skyrim, its been available for years)

- it does not feel like an MMO but like a single player MMO. ( what did you expect if you crossbreed a single player RPG with an MMO)

- it costs money to play ( i have been playing monthly subs for MMOs for over 15 years, best thing its still as expensive as 15 years ago)

- graphics and annimations are bad ( latest press videos show vastly improved armors, combat annimations)

- Combat does not fit an MMO... (Now dont view the combat as part of the single player solo expeience, but as part of multiplayer PvE and PvP,  gives a whole different view on the combat system)

- single player stories dont belong in an MMO ( clueless, TSW, SWTOR and LOTRO are only popular because of their stories, so are single player MMOs)

- the game has classes ( but more freedom to create your own chracter profile then almost any other MMO)

- i miss the freedom of roaming the lands as i see fit ( you canfreely roam 70% of the world as soon as you reach 50, which combines the freedom of Elder scrolls games with a typical leveling leveling MMO)

seems most beta players are happy and buying the game,  because they realise its what it is, a good themepark, mainly story driven, with a sepperated PvP game..

this like a thousand times over. Ive never heard so much crying in my life over this game. I thought GW2 was bad but this takes the cake on this site. People wanted skyrim online so badly now its just spoiled brat entitlement syndrome 1000x over.

They did make a game similiar to wurm online with a better engine and graphics. It was called Xsyon and it flopped pretty much because no one supported it and the poor guy did like 90% of the game himself as he couldnt afford to hire any other devs. I played both Xsyon and Wurm and I felt Xsyon was much better because it didnt take you years to make simple items thought there was still a grind to skilling up and learning new things. I do really like the freedom of this game though but as much as I wanted to get into it I enjoyed the solo survival aspect more and this game didnt seem to cater to that player, it felt restrictive unless you joined a guild or community to work off of. Its an mmorpg though and expected to cater more to that type of player though. I think if this game was a bit more simplified they would have a much larger community because there is a pretty large survival genre of players whom love sandbox survival games but do not want to spend months trying to get past the learning curve and crafting system.

I think this just proves that pay to play mmorpgs are fine if you release something of quality and continue to develop your game past release. All these games that went free to play after being pay to play has nothing at all to do with people not being able to afford the game or blocked entry. It has a lot to do with the quality of the game. Even games like everquest 2 were deeply flawed from the start and half assed in quality and still are to this day. WOW has been polished and content heavy every few months since release pretty much and though the game started off deeply flawed to blizzard stayed at it fixing the game and making it much more enjoyable. Hell I havent even played a mmorpg more than 2 or 3 months straight since wow and before that DAOC and some warhammer as that was deeply flawed to.

Go look at the free to play games like neverwinter for example, still to this day hardly any end game content and they charge you WAY and I mean WAY more money than any pay to play game with a year long sub would cost. I think players have just become so damn jaded from shitty release after shitty release copying wow that people just expect this as the normal now.

please mods sticky requested!

who cares what the press says I know I dont if I like a game I play it or if it interests me then I might read some reviews but seriously who cares wth is 60 bucks anyways to evaluate it for 30 days and if you like it you stay. Or you can do like most people here on this site have done and just sign up for beta testing and try it before you buy it yourself. Its not like they ever change mechanics anymore in beta's all they are is free press for their games.

Also to the ones hating on this game so much get a life seriously do games rule your lives or something? Its pathetic to see the same posters in every single thread on this site slamming this game. We get it you do not like it what are you babies who need attention and have to scream pay attention to me? Dont play it if you hate it that much but to hear in every single thread that is ESO related the same people over and over again just hating to be hating gets annoying after awhile.

wow I never in a million years expected to read about this. Maybe now this game can be modernized as best as the engine allows. It would be great to bring this game back from life support and actually see new content and changes to the game. To bad they couldnt do this for warhammer online before EA shut the doors or before that keeping it on life support with no dev  support.

Im sorry but I cannot really understand this , maybe Im just slow or something. It takes a huge company like SOE to write ai code that takes that long for monsters? Voxel games have been around awhile now and all the info is out there. Hell even Unity has a voxel version of their engines now. I have been playing voxel games for well over two years now and none of them launched alpha or beta without monsters. Does this mean SOE literally just started making this game or something and immediately sold rights into the alpha as soon as the terrain and first avatars were made? 7 days to die minecraft planet explorers realm explorer etc I can keep going and going all in alpha or beta and all had monsters and most of a game playable as soon as they opened up players to the world. I just do not understand the draw to this game at all is it because it has everquest in its name? There is like a million times better voxel games coming out or already out with about 100 times more features in them that look a HELL of a lot better. I guess smedley really has everyone on this site drinking his special cool aid or something because coming from someone who plays voxel games almost daily, this game is a freaken joke.

I think it is because others live in a real world? There are not million times better voxel games on the horizon with 100 times the features, that simply is not reality. This game is still in alpha, the code for putting mobs in wasn't a high priority before, now they are working on it. why does this surprise you?

do your homework on voxel games please there are a ton of others around right now in alpha with about 100x the features. A better looking one right off the bat is star forge google it. Go look at 7 days to die also granted thats zombie based. Voxel games have been around way with smooth terrain and there are some really good ones out there. Like I said I do not hate SOE or everquest, but I do see this as a crowd funded project from smedley  without a kickstarter pledging system.

From what I understand they press played a PVE beta last weekend and all the game play and opinions from that beta will be release.  I don't think anyone cares how bad previous betas were just how the game is now.  Also, the press and possible a good chunk of stress test beta testers may be getting into a PVP beta this weekend and so Friday is last PVE beta with no NDA and next week should be PVP beta with no NDA.  Instead of a couple hours they probably gave the press several days to derp around, which should give us a feel for what to actually expect from the game as far as PVE goes... Maybe we might even see some long game footage streaming... I just hope they use better software than they usually use for the frickin GW2 and WildStar  and other game footage, seriously wth are they using their iPhones?  To the Press: if your recording streaming software sucks do us a favor and just don't do it.

That's just it, with all due respect to I don't trust press coverage, they can and are paid off to tell lies and do not express themselves the way they really want to, I have been burned soooo many times taking press coverage to heart, nowdays i will not buy or even wait the download untill I get to see a basement dweller play live on Twitch for at lest an hour with many question from me and others alike, only then will I buy if the game is up to snuff.

They can't afford my integrity. That said do wait until you believe you can make an informed decision. I don't think any of us on the staff care whether you do or don't buy it.

THIS 100 times over here more on this site.  I really wish you guys would start posting more comments like this and put some of these guys in their place. Ive never in my life seen so many posters on one site that generally speak so much nonsense in my life because they do not agree with the reviewer. Its like a spoiled brat mentality in adults on this site. If they do not like something they do everything in their power to discredit and spew so much nonsense just to try and make everyone believe their point of view no matter how asinine it is.

this has been addressed numerous times on their NDA forums and in press coverage so unless you are just assuming they are liars from the start then not sure this is a actual issue or just prefabricated because you do not like the game.

Thats just one I could find off short notice its been addressed in the forums multiple times but you know I cannot link you that as the forums have been closed for two weeks now.

Exactly why there still is a NDA. because if there wasnt, alot of of wannabe youtubers and "reviewers" would slack the game off, eventhough it isnt even released yet.

By having a NDA they can make sure the above wont happen, and review will only be done based on a client version they feel is close to what we will come launch.

Whats funny though is during beta events there was twitch streamers that were being reported over and over to Zen and they did not try very hard to stop them and most of the reviews from twitch streams were more positive than negative from user comments. As soon as the NDA does come down everyone who dislikes the direction of the game or sandbox players who wanted skyrim online with mods will be slamming it anyways as they are usually the loudest anyways here.

Guess it'll have to wait until Friday, but I don't see how anyone can consider the PvP in this game 'dumbed down'. I play A LOT of pvp games, and can honestly say that ESO's PvP isn't simplistic. I won't say it's the most complex pvp game I've ever played, but it's far from the bottom.

This game has so much misinformation floating around right now it's annoying. Especially since most of the mistakes over this game have nothing to do w/ the game itself, and almost entirely to do w/ how poorly a job the game's marketting / pr team has been doing.

Dumbed down as in no one has seen level 50 or had the ability to spend a lot of skill points to build a character they went in as al ow level character with limited skills and limited points spent and just auto leveled up.

So there is no way of knowing how a level 10 with 15 skill points or whatever who goes in there will be against a level 50 with a thousand skill points spent and all their skills unlocked or maxed out. I would think not very well.

this has been addressed numerous times on their NDA forums and in press coverage so unless you are just assuming they are liars from the start then not sure this is a actual issue or just prefabricated because you do not like the game.

I'd be lying if i said i wasn't hyped and excited! I haven't been lucky enough to get into beta. The lack of info and still under NDA i realize worries some people, but for some reason i still feel like this could be a gem!!

Anyone else not played beta but not deterred because NDA is still in effect? Anyone else hyped?!?!

Can't wait to play! 2014 is gonna be a great year for us as PC MMO gamers!

You might want to temper your expectations until after the NDA is dropped and you can then get some first hand unfiltered information concerning the game.  So far everything has been marketing spin.  I'd wait to get some videos and player reviews.

Hence my earlier comment OP, there is no marketing spin on this game Ive been in the beta's I wonder if you have. This is a themepark mmorpg which is exactly what they been selling it as with some elder scrolls features. Even they are on record saying the reason they put it way before TES series is so they can not break the lore.  I would say stop posting nonsense about the game but I already know thats impossible for some of you guys and your negativity.

yeah Im not really trying to be negative about the game itself as I enjoyed the eq titles but man this game I cannot see in any way shape or form just a bandwagon jump to voxel based games since they are getting so big now and Smedley literally just making people pay for a unfinished game to fund his project. If he wants to make a true voxel game he needs to create more than just a voxel world , the things that make these games so much fun is the survival aspects and the mods over time. If you are not managing your food, water, crafting sleep etc they get pretty boring pretty fast as you can only remake your castle or house so many times before your bored to death.  Ive been watching the twitch streams of this game and reading up on it as I enjoy voxel games but man this game doesnt seem to be offering anything at all to it other than the name everquest. Hopefully it comes a long well and they get in the fun parts of voxel games.
is this game going to ever get more skill sets for the existing classes or ever be about more than RNG? I really loved the world and art style but the game play has to be probably the most boring of all actiony games ive played so far. I just get so bored with combat in this game and I wish I didnt as its a beautiful world.
Im sorry but I cannot really understand this , maybe Im just slow or something. It takes a huge company like SOE to write ai code that takes that long for monsters? While I cannot agree with you OP about not being in any beta's for this , I can say I do agree with you on pre purchase. I think a lot of players here whom havent gotten much info are going to be pleasently surprised of the quality whom do enjoy themepark mmorpgs like you can see from the videos. But having said that the old bratty sandbox crowd that cannot go without posting in every single thread on this site are going to be crying like complete babies like they do with every single release of any game that isnt a sandbox.  I think most players here are smart enough to make their own choices on what they like and do not like and will not worry about the negativity that is going to happen regardless of how well made a game is.

On the NDA, I think its hurting this title much more being under NDA than it is releasing it to the public and I do not mean for a crappy game. I think they have been keeping it under NDA as there might of been some reworking and technical issues maybe. But who knows really it might actually be for valuable feedback from the beta community and reworking of systems that were flawed like most real beta's do , not the ones you pay to get into for marketing purposes to hype the game to masses. I know Ive been in a quite a bit of core alpha's and some closed beta's where testing is real and not some gimmick just to hype your game.

My question for most of you guys are why cannot most of you not just like a game for you know it being a game? How come every game you pick up has to be generalized into if its a "wow clone" or not? How exactly does it effect your gaming if a game offers raiding or quest hubs but also has sandbox elements? I imagine most of the posters here are older as this thread seems to be pretty mature but seriously why does it matter?

When I purchase a game or read up on game I could really care less if its a sandbox or a theme park with "wow clone" features. When I buy a game I look at the combat and gameplay elements and could really care less if end game has raiding or tri realm pvp or warfronts/warzones etc. It should be about fun and not if a game has some exclaimation points over npc names. I play games like seven days to die , the dead linger, planet explorers etc. They are full sandbox survival games but I also play games like SWTOR WOW and GW2 and those are on rails theme parks. But I enjoy each of them pretty much equally at different times. The way most of the people in this thread sound they want every sort of game that has quest hubs and theme park like story gone from the genre in general which comes down IMO to maybe you guys should just stick to games you like instead of bitching about every new game that is a themepark.

I thought they were launching a completely new UI with this update also? maybe its part 2 but the game itself is still pretty fun but the UI really needs to be finished and released like they did with the huge graphical revamp and quest lines they did with the PS4 and xbox release. This game never seems to be missing players either its always full of people playing on the pc version.

And I agree with Ryowulf's notion of "Also notes that the games SWTOR was put next two were old games." True, STO's one is a much better model, but to the truth, it gets either cash-shop heavy or grind-heavy in the end, and it's full with lockboxes, sadly. LotRO is also much better, especially for a former vip, but in there you need to buy (or grind the TP for) the expansions.

My favourite part of the column was the ending (Everyone knows the adage about honey getting better results than vinegar), I keep saying the same since TOR switched to f2p. It was, however, only a theory without an actual example, until Rift switched. Rift's model is awesome. Jean should've paired Rift next to TOR as well, comparing the totally opposite approach of the same thing, the f2p switch. Now that would've been an interesting column :)

(ps. and it's coming from someone who doesn't really like Rift, and more or less like and occasionally play TOR. TOR's f2p is a bad joke. And it's still better by lightyears compared to the initial state.)

The problem with this reasoning is that TOR's F2P is the second most successful of any game offering a subscription.  Only WoW's cash shop makes more money than TOR's (in the market of games which include subs)

So you can think it's a bad joke all you want, but EA is laughing all the way to the bank.

show some facts to back up your statement or do not post this sort of stuff because I think you are so full of it. There is tons of free to play games out there making way more money than even wows cash shop let alone a little 500 k sub game. Look at Korean and Chinese revenue for example.

no other game I can think of restricts players to gaining 25% less experience if you do not pay 15 bucks a month. No other game I can think of gives you less action bars and UI if you do not pay 15 bucks a month. You people rationalizing this restrictive garbage shows you cannot be objective nor are even trying to be rational. Its garbage period for anyone that does not pay a sub for the game. People on this forum never seem to amaze me at the amount of stupidity in rational thinking or excuses they make in a bias way because they either hate or love their game so much they play or do not play.

As for game play its not terrible nor is it great and why they lost all the subs as its a on rails star wars experience that was hyped beyond belief and is why they lost so many subs. If they would of just stuck to the truth showed more of the game before release and listened more to their beta testers it would still have probably a couple million subs. Im not in the sandbox SWG bandwagon either , I thought SWG was utter crap also so I judge the game on what it offered when I subbed to it. I still enjoy going back to it once in a while to play it but the fact you have to pay 15 bucks a month for two more action bars and normal experience gains makes me sick to my stomach and why I havent been back in a very long time. It reminds me of a shady used car dealer trying to milk every cent out of a person. They might even get a sub out of myself and others if they didnt seem like they want to nickle and dime you by restricting everything. Some of us are not impulsive and can stand up for our principles though we still enjoy a games story etc.
