I actually think HJ was a "real" game under development a few years back. But when the HE got attention it slowly turned into a good demo, that could show off the features in HE. An even tho the offsite GM's has been working alot on the "demo" I think they turned into beta-testers of the engine, and nothing more.

I know they are very loyal to Simu, but sometimes Simu dont deserves to have the GM's take every bullet that head in Simu's direction. (I'm pretty sure a GM will defend simu in this thread as well).

I'm really happy for Simu and the innovative engine they developed. But I don't think HJ will be released, and if it do, I agree with the OP, the announced feature wont be very "hot" anylonger... (if it ever will be released I will give it a try, ofcourse, but I wouldn't hold my breath)

I'm pretty sure the update was for the players in EU (those of EU that can play, that is) and I wouldn't think that the US release is much of relevance for the EU community. Could be an explanation for the lack of such info.. idunno.

Even mmorpg.com states it's for the "Players" and the source is linked to the EU forums.

are these Euro or US?

This is what they say in the FAQ at Fileplanet (the Beta Authentication page):

You must be located in North America, Australia or New Zealand in order to qualify for entry into the Warhammer Online beta.

I hope any staff at mmorpg.com could confirm this. Theres alot of WAR hungry guys in EU that will take keys and get nothing (and alot of US guys will be left out).

Maybe state what area it is on the "get-key" page?

I know it's frustrating. I want to play HJ as much as anyone. What I will tell you is that the game is coming along faster than I expected. Big parts of the game are being finalized and we're moving steadily forward. Dang this vague PR-speak, but it's true.

I'm sorry to say this, but you sound pretty much as all GM's has sounded since '05...

..I want to believe.. but...

And perhaps someone who is in beta can tell me: is this game simply a fantasy version of City of Heroes? Having aesthetics trump realism seems truer to comic books than to the other fantasy MMOs out there.

I would rather see it as a MMO version of the old (unreal-engine) game "Rune", with the FPS style maleecombat in third person perspective. I think the cartoonish aesthetics is just a matter of gamedesign taste... I also think cartoonish games last longer, as realistic games seems to last until the next graphic card  generation is introduced.

Nice summary Laura!

...now give us a release date!

Sony announced the partnership with NCSoft on E3.

I have no links (sorry), but I'm sure you can search for it

Edit: Gunbug said it :)

Unless I'm mistaken, they have not officially confirmed what the pricing scheme is going to be like for HJ.

They actually have once. But long time ago. Ok, not THAT scheme, but about tiered pricing. Back at simucon 2004.You can see it on the video Q&A. (at Hero´s Hall)

The question is, "Will there be Tiered Pricing?", And David answer "Yes!" and they move on to the next question.

But if it still means they will, I have no clue, as so many other things about this game...

We keep having GameMasters in here say outright that it's still going.  They aren't allowed to say much else and I actually think it's smart for the company not to say much else anyhow looking at how saying things hype people up for disappointment when something goes wrong (as things always do).

The game is still alive!  Shhh!

The GM's also told us it was alive during the very long "radio silence", when in fact it was on development pause (thanks to hero engine). Some would argue that it WAS alive anyway, and it sort of was, but GM's insisted that the engine and the game was developed at the same time without interference.

So I wouldn't trust a GM as they aren't alowed to say anything else and tends to be VERY biased, I guess thats in the NDA...

So lets say "We HOPE it's still alive!"

HJ was not showed...

SIMU-JOSH:

Hero's Journey did not make an appearance at SimuCon.

I'm sure there's a lot of excuses coming up, but would a HJ screening be proper after so much silence?

What do you think?

Just saying they do this or that does not make it true. Perhaps you can reference an example of what your talking about? Sure, they post how they don't like some types of game systems, but I don't recall them bashing any game titles.

Jonny

I doesn't make it untrue either...

Start by looking at the old "live stream" from simucon 2005. That will give you an Idea on what I'm talking about. If you havent seen it, It contains alot of stuff that made me interested in the game, long time ago. The thing is, I like when they say Everquest, and its clones,  are crap.. that shows some balls, and its funny. It might be rude, but I like rude before nice sometimes, because its usually more honest. You will find the clip at Heroes Hall (HJ fan/community site)I think. Oh, btw, pointing at gamesystem is pretty much the same, at least when it's totally obvious what game they talk about. Anyway, I recommend it to all, not only for some silly evidence for the crap I post...

However, I think they admitted that CoH/CoV's character creation was the inspiration for HJ's character creation, as they (I guess) liked it (not the game that is).

 peace man!

I don't see Simu trying to make HJ the anti-WoW but at the same time it certainly won't be another clone.

This made remember how much crap I've seen Simu puke over "other mmo's" out there...And to be honest, I do hear developer puke over other games and, at the same time, throw roses over their own.. But Not as much I've seen/read Simu do. Hell, they are the masters of puking. So, It will be very interesting to finally see HJ, if it actually is released, and check how much different it will be of the other MMO's, bathing in Simu puke. I think, however, Simu turned down the puking lately, and that is good and bad.. Good, because its nicer, but bad because it could mean they realised it might end up pretty much like everything else out there.

So I hope Amathe is wrong or I will curse Simu for wasting my time following this, in theory, interesting game so f-ing long and curse myself for not listening to Amethe's (and his allies), sometimes pretty good points, more seriously.

I think if any game is going to bridge the gap between the freedom of text based games and the eye candy of mmorpgs, it will be Hero's Journey. That's the hope, anyway.

Only you, as a GM, can tell.. I guess
You're looking at it everyday....

Simutronics has never given a firm date. They originally said 2005, then changed it to 2006, then changed it to 2007. Each time they explained that their date was only a guideline and that it would be released when it was ready. Blizzard did much of the same thing for World of Warcraft. This is also not out of character with Simutronics with their existing games, giving a very broad time for completion and sliding that date if the project wasn't ready.

Well, not entirely true. Simu has been pretty sure on each release date announcement, at least officially. Maybe they has been "explaining" as an excuse afterwards.  But Amathe has a point about pushing back dates as much. At least when it comes to a pretty experienced developer as Simutronics. I mean, they have been in the game development busyness for some time, but still cant plan development... at least how it seems. After this much experience with games, they should know how long it takes to develop mmo's or they don't have the courage to say 2010(?) straight up.

It might be a bit to much to call it vapourware, but simu do have them self to blame for such rumours,  when they suddenly became silent after the pretty good marketing campaign with screens and/or dev.logs once a week. And after the "radio silence" we only heard echo's on each interview (its not only Amathe repeating himself). Only "new" info is that they are working with the game again (which is good news!), but pretty much everything else is one year old info (except perhaps the pushback of catpeople.)

..but, as Simu  sais "Don't be surprised by anything, and expect the unexpected." ...and that includes the cancellation of the game I guess. However, it was fun to get an insight of their (indi?)office and I really, really hope to play this game.. I does sound fun!

..and Steph, I think you look like a very nice person, and not tired! Keep up the good work and make sure you hand over a great game experience to us, when HJ is finished!  ;)

If it were up to me, I'd have made everyone several movies and compilations now, but it is not up to me.

So I guess the movie, that was in "final production stage" almost a year ago , was pure bull?

Just a heads up so you all don't think this was forgotten. It's looking like they're in the final production stages of the movie. I can't really give you a time frames as it's not my project, but I don't think it will be overly long.

Well?
It was indeed interesting, thanks ShadowZERO!

I could only hope Simu-people could make these public appearance more often (relevant to HJ) and not only when someone points at them with a smelly stick.
This is indeed a very interesting thread!
In both good and bad ways...
It's funny to read scandals and crap about people you don't know, but not very funny to read how it can (and probably did) turn out bad...

The sad thing is that it takes this kind of crap talk to get former and current(?) simutronics employees talk about the the HJ game.
It is a sad fact that the "silence" surrounding the game is worrying, and to hear that its still under development and perhaps will see a releaseday is comforting. But to hear it in a context of crap(?)talk is scary.

If the Simutronic people (former and current) didn't care about the HJ fanbase, they wouldn't care about the craptalk they did deny and corrected above, but still.. If they really cared they would inform the fanbase about the progress of the game in a rate that didn't keep it a the vapourware status among the fans.

Lets hope Simutronics can and will get out in public more often and not only when someone shait on their desk...

We can hope! Hopefully they arent just showing the game to show off the engine though.
I would think developers are more interested in the engine... So my guess its more about that and not so much about the game
I don't think much has been said about the specific class training system. However, we do know we will find "wyr's" though out the world. And use these to customize weapons/items abilities and skills.

So in a way you can "enchant" your skill. Making them act quite different from its original effect. And different combinations of Wyr's makes the skill even more unique. (compare it to socketed items, but with your skills)

Something like that. Not much info about this has been released, sadly.

Hope this helps...
