Camelot Unchained: Choice Matters!
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/18/13 12:54:49 PM
When Paizo were running their kickstarter for Pathfinder Online, I was tempted to go for it and support them but a few things held me back... the innexperience making MMOs and especially a non-traditional one (in that they were going outside the standard WoW mold and while potentially more rewarding... riskier). Also, I thought their rewards for being willing to put up money for financing their project at such an early stage was incredibly lackluster. But this is very different... while this is completely outside the mold... Mark Jacobs is not only very experienced but he has lots of experience doing exactly this kind of stuff. Also you get the feel that they're not trying to make some kind of Triple A MMO as a great experience for the people that are looking for that kind of experience... and not just saying stuff that will just reach the maximum level of attention from the general market. This will most likely be the first MMO I support via Kickstarter. (provided they don't insult me with ridiculous rewards like +1 STR trinkets or an exclusive cape that exclusive until it's not) |

I think the MMO market's gonna have to stop treating indy devs like they're big studio CS people they can talk down to... It's high time those forum whiners get put back in their place by someone who doesn't give a fuck about unreasonable kids who think they're owed everything and for free. |

[Column] Pathfinder Online: What Makes You Pledge?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/17/13 6:21:06 AM
I've backed many kickstarter projects this year and though I wanted to see this one succeed I could not bring myself to pay $100 to demo an MMO I knew so little of.
I found they offered too little in rewards and so little info as to the aims of the projects that I had to leave this up to the guys that believe in this more than I do.
Also I figured I'd catch them on the 3rd kickstarter *wink* *wink* |

City of Heroes: Livestream Q&A with Matt 'Positron' Miller

I could easilly have written any of the posts here... in fact my experience is almost identical to the initial poster. The thing CoH offered that other MMOs don't is that when I made a superhero... I felt like I had created something and since the name is so important in conveying what that superhero is about and that it is unique to you... you really felt like each hero was a unique creation. Superhero MMOs using established IPs don't really give you the sense that the world you're in is a blank slate for you to make you mark in... cause Superman is Superman and you're just not gonna be more important or anywhere close to that... in CoH you felt like the world WAS the server population. In that respect... CoH was almost like one of those "social MMOs"... If there ever was a CoH2 what I'd love to see would be the same level of character creation, unique names to each players (unlike champions)... if they want a cash shop I would make a vectorial logo / emblem / facemask creator and have people pay to get their created logo on their superhero.... but what the game should really focus on should be the communities on each server and letting influence and create their own world. |

City of Steam: Exclusive First Preview

There was a time when the words “browser-based MMO” would make me cringe. Not denying that you do not need a state of the art engine to make a game fun... heck Angry Birds is fun... But MMOs? ... the time for cringing is still upon us. |

A cool mount for everyone that unsubs? |

General: Funcom Snags LEGO Mini-figure Licensing for New MMO

K Funcom released AoC and it wasn't ready for launch... and they paid the price... are they different from all the other companies that release MMOs over the last 6 years? No. (Rift changed all that) So I don't see the point in hating on em. They'll get better over time as they learn their lessons.

Superheroes is a popular theme and while Cryptic failed at many things... they always put in certain features like mission designers that people enjoy a lot. I'm surprised we're still not hearing about a CoH2 from NCSoft Imagine a CoH2 but including the combo system from GW2... that'd be incredible I would go back to an MMO based around no or minimal loot... definitely gear-less however the whole environmental weapons system from GW2 would work very well here... |

Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes: Amenadresh Returns!
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/25/12 11:04:24 AM
Originally posted by Fadedbomb So what exactly needs fixing in WAR? As far as I'm concerned... Warhammer Age of Reckoning is the greatest game that nobody plays. The game is fixed. It might have taken 2 years for them to do it but the game has been awesome for about 2 years now. The game tourists moved on 1 month after release... never even got a grasp as to the true nature of the game... and hardcore fans have capitulated as the population dropped on the final last 4 servers.
Wrath of Heroes is not for everyone... it's not for me. But it's not like they can make WAR appealing to the lot that hangs around these forums so why bother? |

Originally posted by crysent First ...that is not news... it was announced months ago that 1.3 would be moved ahead of schedule and be content light so as to bring all the features that could not be in 1.2 in the game ASAP as well as a few new ones like group finder. If you expected content you're just not paying attention. If you really want more content in 1.3... then I guess they could always push back all these feature another 2 months. I'm pretty sure less than 5% of the players have beaten the 1.2 raid in Hardmode... heck I'm convinced you don't have a single piece of Campaign gear. |

Originally posted by Wickedjelly I love having a choice and having my character say it... I find it's a great feature in SWTOR... the only thing about it which is where I agree with the other poster... is that in SWTOR what you end up saying is not always intuitive with the text you selected... The other part about it is that you don't really feel like the choices you make drive the outcome... you're mostly funneled in the same experience (aside from maybe an NPC reaction) except at a few key points.
I'd like to see a game that mixes VO choices like in SWTOR, faction affinity like in EQ and diplomacy like in Vanguard. That'd be insane :) |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Community Conundrum
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/16/12 11:04:33 AM
The proper way to handle this is to make "new" destination servers for all "active" people to move to... those that are innactive should not be holding one to names on accounts they don't use. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Community Conundrum
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/16/12 10:56:29 AM
It's refreshing to see posts that adress real problems without going into the usual "OMG DOOM DOOM SWTOR SUX AND GW2 IS GONNA KILL IT"... Any hyped game (and therefor any game that is gonna be about a major franchise and not sound like an instant failure) is gonna have massive "game tourism"... it's just a reality. Lets be honest, SWTOR had one of the smoothest launch in the industry... with one of the highest traffic flow ever seen for an MMO launch. So kudos on that. They've been victims of their appeal (and inability to keep those game tourists... but can those guys really be kept anwyays? Is there any point to trying and cather to them?) I'd wait til 1.3 + next event so they can gauge what their "willing to keep playing" population is... and then propose destination servers and let people freely migrate to those.
One failure from their launch was getting allied guilds on the same servers... it seemed very manipulative on their part where they used this to distribute player population but not so much in giving you what you were registering for in the first place... a destination for you and your sister guild buddies. MMO survival is about community so they need to enable people to revive the age old guild bromances and their merger plans need to take this in consideration... especially if they have any open PvP designs in the works. |
