Not releasing it whole heartedly to the public as in anyone who wants one go ahead and buy it, they ramp up there servers so they know they can handle the load. I know it is frustrating to the every day gamer but in all honesty at least the people who were lucky enough to buy the game don't have to really worry about extended downtimes while the company figures out what to do at each stage of the release. I was there on release day for WAR and was amazed at how many servers there were, since then they have reduced that to maybe 1/4 of what it once was, in order to facilitate a world that was populated rather then devoid of life. However even original devs like Aventurine should plan to increase its server capacity by 5 times. Example if they planed on 2 servers for the world, and each server could hold stabaly 100k people make sure you have the budget and the hardware to have 10 servers online within a week of release. That way you don't lose customers due to crashing or not being able to buy the game. Just my thoughts though. |

A definition of "sandbox" and why it's better?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/09/09 11:43:32 AM
I had to reply to this thread, I remember writing something a while back about "sandbox" games that I think is relevent, so here it is... "I think everyone is getting bogged down in a definitive definition of the phrase, "Sandbox MMORPG". While I agree a true Sandbox game would have no barriers, and no levels everyone would be able to do anything, hence the "game" Second Life. The only TRUE to the meaning of "Sandbox MMORPG" is Second Life. Eve isn't true to the meaning, but it is very close, the reason being is the progression of skills, that is the only thing holding back Eve from being a full meaning of "Sandbox MMORPG". Now before I go any further I have to say that I used to be a bigger pencil and paper RPG'er back in the day. I played D&D, AD&D, Robotech, Rifts, Hero's...etc. These games were not even true Sandbox style games, yes you could go where you wanted, yes you could do what you wanted, but you were limited by your level and your skills. At some point you had to find a way to make experience to advance a skill, an example of this is in the Robotech RPG if you succesfully perform a skill you can get a % of a point into that skill. I forget the full wording in the book, but if you did backflips useing your gymnastics skill over and over your Backflip skill could max out at 98%. Either way you had to spend the time to get to that point. From that point on if you decided to go do a backflip then you were sure to succeed. Now to cross this with a game that is not as adaptive as a Human powered brain GM is quite difficult, because a human GM can taylor quests to your character and your skill sets. Also they can adapt creatures so that you stand a chance if they made them to tough. A video game can't do this right now, and I really don't know when one will. Until that time we have to make due with what we can create to make a fun experience for everyone. So the MMORPG is born, and in some cases they are based alot on the Linear progression of the Pencil and paper MMO like, WOW, and in some cases they are loosely based on the Linear progression like Eve, and in one case not based on any linear progression at all, Second Life. So where does that leave us for our Sandbox MMORPG's?? Well we have to take the best of all the worlds that we can, some games have tried this and failed, others have succeded but not to the finacial standing of WOW. Also we can't just look at End Game, that is just stupid because the whole point of an RPG is to live out a fictional life there is no real end to it. So to me the best mix of "Sandbox", "MMO", and "RPG" would be this. The freedom to go anywhere as a newb, that's right if I want to go into the heart of darkness I should be able to try, I probably shouldn't be able to get there but I could try. I should be able to design my character not based on templates but on my personal choice, so a skill system not a tree system not a feat syste and not a talent system, a skill system where I choose to be an axe weilder that can throw a fireball but not dodge anything. I should also be able to progress those skills, not over time but instead through my actions, like the classic RPG's of old, if I do something heroic I should gain experience that should be able to be distributed to my attributes and skills so that I can shape my characters strengths and weaknesses. I should be able to craft anything I want not by buying a recipe but by trial and Error, there should be bonuses I can randomly find by substituting Ceder wood for Ebony Wood while trying to creat a bow. I should be able to sell my wares freely and make a living selling them, and progress in my crafting by performing difficult but useful crafts. And finally I should be able to interact with hundreds if not thousands of people anytime I wish, I should not be pigeon holed into a private place to level, and quests or "GM" written RPG arcs should be in the game for anyone to complete, but should not be spoon fed to you. You should have to search these quests out. I know I will get alot of Flak over this next part but I have to admit the best cross between games that would fit all of my personal thoughts on "Sandbox MMORPG" are the following... Asheron's Call - Character system, you design your own character and pick your own skills and advance them with the experience you earn ie: change your attributes/skills to shape your character Asheron's Call - World, No instancing you can go anywhere at any time, I will qualify this with another statement "Certain epic or extreme quests should be designed so that others can not steal the ending on you, like the Aerifall quest line, you have to fit certain requirements to get into the final dungeon." Eve - Economy, I won't deny the Economy in Eve it is the best by far. SWG - Player houseing - Amazing is all I can say Eve - Crafting (with qualifier) - Although the crafting in Eve yeilds good items I am not sure how they are fully created but from what I understand it is pretty much a good system. Asheron's Call - Experience system, as you gain experience through killing MOBS or doing quests that experience can be placed anywhere in your character see "Character system" So there it is what I think a True "Sandbox MMORPG" is and what the closest thing to it that we will ever get should be, and still be fun."
I hope that helped in the discussion a bit.

Seeing a 6.0 rating by MPOG really makes me mad
General Discussion « Age of Conan 3/06/09 3:12:52 PM
I completely agree 6.0 is an outrage should have being about a 3-4 and that was only for graphics, nothing else about the game is interesting or fun. |

Sandbox / classless / skill-based MMOs - what are the options right now?
LFGame « General Discussion 3/05/09 10:34:45 AM
You know I come from pen and paper RPG's, the first RPG I played was D&D I think 2nd edition, not AD&D but the original D&D. I used to love that game but I always thought it was lacking, I mean you could if the GM let you walk into a bar and punch anyone you wanted and start a bar fight. The GM of course would bend the story to work with your characters, and the more you got to know the GM the more the game was built to your particular style. I did however come to loath the fact that we had to make decisions that when we did some things, like drink 42 Ales what saving throw should we use, or if I wanted to do a backflip for no reason just stood up on the bar and backflipped off for no reason drunk as a skunk what do I roll under? There really was no skill system in the original D&D and that is what I didn't like about it. Then about a year after starting in the RPG world I was introduced to an interesting game, Robotech. I was amazed by the skill system that paladium had set up, and although I had to stay within limits when I created the character I could pretty much choose any skills I wanted. Not to mention my attributes which all played a part in my starting skill level. Now I had the ability to do the following; Player : I want to drink 42 Beers in the local bar. GM: Ok you have to save vs poison and if you fail you pass out Player: Rolls dice and succeeds. Now get up on the bar and backflip off it, I have a 85% in Acrobatic - backflip GM: Well your drunk so you have a -60% on that so you have to roll under 25% and if you fail you will take damage. Player: Rolls 55% and fail GM: Rolls some D6's and says, "You take 30 damage directly to your HP and you have a concussion, all skills will be at -20% for 2 game days." The ability to do the above scenario kept me playing Robotech/Rifts/Heros Unlimited for years untill I found my first MMORPG, Asherons Call. Since this game resembled the RPG's of old that is what became my favorite MMO game of all time, and to this day NO games have matched it. Since then I have played almost every major MMO release but still go back to AC every time. I am playing EVE right now but I even find that very limiting, I think it is because the exploration sucks in EVE. I mean its, warp to a gate, jump through, warp to another gate jump through, just empty space after empty space. The combat is ok, nothing to write home about, the skill system is ok, but real time skill training is a stupid thing. Having the option of learning EVERY skill in the game to max potential even if it takes 10 years to do is stupid as well. Limits even on Sandbox games have to exist otherwise you will end up with second life. To myself I would like to see a game that takes on the same structure as AC or Paladium RPG's. I would like to see a game where you do have levels but they don't mean much just a number showing your experiance and nothing more. You should an attribute and skill system similar to AC where you can take your experiance and put it into each attribute, or each skill in order to become better at that skill. It should not be easy to untrain skills, AC has a dungeon that you go to and you retrieve a skill gemstone and when you use it that skill is removed and you have a wait untill you can remove your next skill, I am not sure how long that wait is but I know it hurts to wait. It is hard to do the "flavor of the month" character with that system. Next the world has to be open and seemless, AC's land mass was big enough it would take you at least an hour or 2 to get from the southern most tip to the north most tip of the land mass. That is of course fi you didn't see anything that interested you on the run and you didn't use any portals. Well this turned out to be a longer post then I was planning but to me AC is the only real option for a sandbox MMO, that is skill based and really has no classes. Also the game makes exploring fun, and your character design is unique. I have heard UO was the same way but I didn't get into that one back in the day as well. Although old and the graphics are outdated to me AC is still the only option. |

I guess you were never there for the Anarchy online release 2 months of hell were you? Where they were dumb enough to think 1 server for EVERYONE, yea that crashed every 20seconds I think...LOL got so bad they shut it down and created 2 servers then offered everyone an extra 1 month sub for it...LOL. Darkfall is releasing terribly yes but not the worst ever by far. |

I am a person who doesn't like to borrow isk off other players, I think buying isk online or gold online defeats the purpose of the game, and I think it skus a game a bit over inflating the economy in that game. So being a self sufficiant person I work my butt off to get the things that I want to use, so the Risk in 0.0 really doesn't outweigh the rewards. The arguement that the game doesn't really begin untill xxx, is a poor one. I have seen far to many, "Shut up and get to level Cap then tell me if the game is easy." or "The game is a grind untill you hit level cap then the game is fun" or in Eve's case, "Once you get into 0.0 the game becomes fun". I find all of these arguments really are self defeating, why does a game only become fun at level cap, or when you enter 0.0. Why can't it be fun the whole time? Asherons call was fun the entire time each level, the quests were not monotonus, exploring was interesting and fun. It didn't matter if you were level 1 or level 125 at the time it was easy to find something fun to do, the journey was fun not the end result. For any games where one of the above statements rings true why do you play them then? Why not play a game like COD 4 or Day of Defeat Source, or Counterstrike source, instant gratification with little to no grind. That is basicly what those statements want, and forgive me if I want a game that is fun to me from the begining to the level cap or area cap in Eve's case. |

I don't understand how anyone could hate this game.
Jita (General) « EVE Online 2/25/09 9:16:08 AM
While I will agree on most of your points, none of them are particulary game making or unique to EVE. I am currently playing EVE, and being someone who is very cautious when it comes to RISK vs Reward I don't PvP unless I am drawn into it with my corp. I don't sit in low sec space just waiting to gank someon. Instead I do my thing, support the economy and grow stronger so that I can someday go to Low Sec and help out. Now honestly I have tried this game 3 times before this run, and played it for about 2-3 months each time. I am pushing my 3rd month on this round and although the game is still a bit interesting, I can feel the boredom starting to take over. The monotony of doing Level 3 missions, the monotony of scanning out people or belts or plexs, Lets not talk about the mining or production of things. The skill system although unique in the way you can train skills is by far not ground breaking and definatly not the best I have saw. Instead I find it one of the biggest annoyances of the game. Now please remember that again i don't "Hate" Eve it has its place among the MMO crowd. It has done well it is I just think that in the long run this game is not for me. A game that is for me, well in that case there is only one that I truely enjoyed playing, and that kept me interested for a VERY long time 4 years I think. Asheron's Call, yes a game that is 10+ years old. Its graphics are one of the only things that are lacking in my opinion, that and Botting. AC's Skill and attribute system were by far the best of any game out there even by todays standard. Just the right amount of skills and the ability to raise them with experiance you make off of kills or by repeatedly useing those skills. Quests that were unique, long and complex if you don't believe me look up the Lady Aerifall quest, or the Olthoi Queen quest. A PvP system that was second to none, if you went RED and lived that life you were respected. Corpse Looting was allowed but you didn't drop all of your stuff instead you dropped a set number of items that was decided by the computer, and those were supposed to be random. A guild system that actually promoted someone to build a good guild. Also MONTHLY updates and only 2 paid updates in 10 years, and finally a world full of Lore that is unique not just goblins, dwarfs, elves and humans. Truely original game, and one that I am thinking I may go back to even though the graphics are not the best anymore, but it beats all the SHIAT that has being released in the last 5 years hands down. |

OMG, portal storms, that was hilarious. Standing around with your mule and then a portal storm starts and poof you get transported and when you appear your getting attacked by a gromie or something and die before you see where you are...LOL. The search for the bodies. Remeber the great Crystal Defense and how one server tried to truely change the story arc themselves When there were no lugian temples or Olthoi Horde nests Tusker dens, you had to compete for kills Drop items on the ground to transfer to your storage characters Seeing that "Shadow Lieutenant" and thinking "How tough could he be?" The Shadow Wars The first time to the fire dungeon in the crater The first time you turn your sound up to listen to the sounds in the middle of the obisidian plains at the nexus point Meeting POOKIE!!! Killing some random creature only to find that random 150% crossbow Before you could see the hidden percentages on bows, xbows and swords and thinking you had a bad ass weapon untill they implimented being able to view them and you find out it was a -% weapon The days before the botting tools Oh how I wish we could have a game like AC again, one that could truely grab your attention and be fun to play for hours at a time. |

Nine times out of 10 problems like this are due to the user and not the company, no I am not a fanboi I am a tech in the service industry and I see this type of crap all the time. When someone gets rude you lose all respect for them and don't want to help them so you start pushing them into the red tape to teach them a lesson. The biggest thing I wanted to comment on is your comment on being able to download the game in 30 min on buddies connection. When it comes to downloading or networking you are only as fast as your slowest connection. If buddy had a connection to the speed test server that went all fiber all the way and the internet was not bogged on any of those routers that he went through then he will always maintain that speed. However if he tried to connect to Turbines downloader and one hop went through a router that was currently on a backup 512 ADSL connection his speed just got reduced to the speed of that ADSL connection and no faster till that router comes back up. Basicly what I am saying is by your post, and the way it reads I would suggest you take a breather and attempt to fix this with turbine or do a chargeback. Read your agreement with your credit card company, if you didn't receive your product they will refund you your money, even if it does mean a bit of paperwork. |

Darkfall is not ready for release - System compatibility.

Originally posted by atziluth Vista 64 and you have not had an issue running any other game? I find that suspect at best and an outright lie at worst. MS 64 bit systems have issues with 32 bit applications... I am sure with some tweaks you could get it to run, but vista 64 premium is hardly a standard OS. Again, what error are you getting? There are a whole host of issues it that it could be with vista 64. The point is that your blanket statement is false. While your hardware might be common (a little on the high end side to be honest) your OS is not and that frankly is where the issue is coming from. Since you cannot differentiate between hardware and software it is obvious you are not a technical user and as such should stay away from blanket statements like your OP. This is not to say that DF does not have compatibility issues, just that you have no proof. I am far from being a fanbois, but this whole thread is on the absurd side. It should have been more as a warning "DF might have issues with Vista 64". That would have been a more appropriate title. What you are saying now is just flat out incorrect. We critics have enough issues fighting the fanbois without defending exhaggerated posts like this.
Ok I have to say this, you are the one who is assuming now. I have had up to date hardware since release of Vista, and I have run Vista x64 Ultimate since release day. I have had no crashing issues, no compatability issues EXCEPT for EA games. The only problem with EA games is they seem to not want to put the shortcuts onto the desktop or in your start menu. Easy fix, but after that every game I have installed has run great. To me these are minor bugs, and not game breaking. I have had issues with Left 4 Dead crashing to desktop but that was an update fix for the game itself and I understand that was happening to PC players alot in general. Since Vista's release I have had 3 computers and none have experianced any of the issues that everyone says Vista is supposed to have, and since I know I am no genius when it comes to OS's or PC's I do know that a computer that can play anything from Asheron's Call to Crysis with out an issue is something that I like, and that is what I have had since Vista release. Here is a list of my configs since Vista release.. 1st Core 2 E6600, Nvidia 7900GT, 4GB Ram, VIsta Ultimate x64 2nd Quad Q6600, Nvidia 8800GT OC, 4GB Ram, Vista Ultimate x64 3rd I7 - 920, Nvidia 8800GT OC, 6GB Ram, Vista Ultimate x64 Before the E6600 I was useing xp x64 and again little to no issues what so ever. |

World of Warcraft ranked #21 here - a question...
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 2/11/09 11:36:19 PM
Well I would like to put this into terms that almost anyone can understand. While WOW is a great game and has attracted droves of followers, it is far from being the best MMO ever released. My personal opinion is that I love Asherons Call, don't as me why I could go on for pages and pages. Others like EVE online, and I play that as well but I still like AC more. Star Wars Galaxies was a better game the WOW but that was when it was first released. Everquest other wise known as Evercrack was also a very popular MMO and I feel was better then WOW. Why you ask, are these games better, well you see that is a matter of opinion for everyone. I like challenges within a MMO, quests that make you think, groups that actually do something and PvP that gets your heart pounding. Not to mention a death penalty that makes it a bad thing to die. I prefer a sandbox world vs a world that holds your hand from 1 area to another to the next. The problem is the "General" typically non-gaming public has never wanted to put that much time into a game or learn it the way myself and many others do. So they are attracted to WOW's flashy graphics(artsy), its gameplay mechanics, and quick returns for the time spent on it. Not to mention the ability to chat with hundreds of there friends. Now how to put this into a package so everyone can understand it. Have you ever seen Mega Blox, you know those kids toys, you put them together to form things and kids play with them. You can make them resemble rudimentary objects and shapes, good enough for someones imagination to put together what they are. This is what WOW is, WOW is Mega Blox. Games like AC, EQ, SWG, EVE..etc are Lego, the ability to be much more detailed in what you want to do with your blocks is there, just like in each of these games. however not everyone likes Lego because they don't know how to create the items they want with it or it is to complex so they will stick to Mega Blox. The point is once you have played WOW, and you play a game that trumps it like AC, EVE...etc you realize what you never want in a MMO again. For me that was this, WOW turns into an FPS at the end game, the whole game up to level cap is just a time sink. The game only begins at level cap and at that point the game is just an FPS. I hope that makes sense to everyone. |

What was the mmo that messed the genre up for you?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 2/03/09 3:48:30 PM
Without a doubt it would be Asherons Call 1, this game set the bar so high no games have being able to truely keep my attention for more then maybe 6 months at the most. No game that I have played compares with AC's one of a kind lore, open world, no instancing and twitch combat for PvP. From final Beta right till I quit 5 years later I had so much fun. To remiss for a moment... I remember one of my first Characters, I wanted to be a sword fighter so I have sword, melee d specialized. This of course at the time made me gimped from the start but how was I to know. A buddy of mine had an Axe fighter basicly the same thing, no magic just typical skills for a fighter which gimped us in the long run. We both started in a little Sho town, I think it was Glendon Wood. We hunted around there thinking we were bad ass when we reached level 15. Nothing has given me the feeling of being home in a game untill I come over the hill and see that town in the Valley, anyway. We were in town one day and watched a guy cast a spell and open a portal, we all did the typical, "WOW" and that is when we learnt about magic. So we of course remade our characters with item magic, and so on. It took us probably 2 months of messing around to finally realize this world didn't end at the mountain range next to our town, and that is when we started to venture further and further out. Every step gave you the feeling of wonder because you never knew what sort of creature you would meet up with next. Then on top of all that, the monthly updates were great, and who could ever forget the "Shadow Wars". Or remember seeing my first diamond golem, or my first shadow lieutnent. Or dieing to a lich, and hearing that insect like sound just before you were swarmed by Olthoi. The community was the best and the game still to this day calls to me, and if no games this month pan out I will resub. Well after AC, I tried them all I think, well the major releases, all of them had there little +'s or -'s. However nothing calls to me after this long like AC. |

This is a classic missinterpretation of what a true class game is supposed to be. WAR actually has pulled it off quite nicely, please let me explain. No one class is able to outright DESTROY all classes from the other side. For each class there is basically an equal but opposite on the other side. The problem is that everyone is used to the WOW mentality that there, example hunter should be able to take on a paladin or a mage and have a fighting chance against every class. In reality a Hunter should get eaten alive by a quick mage or a Paladin every time. In a true class version of WOW any undead player should be terrified to see a Paladin comming at them because they should know they are about to die a second time. This is the nature of classes, this is also why so many people have problems with WAR. Teamwork is what WAR is all about, there is no "I" in team, you need your tanks to do just that hold the line while your range takes out that line. Tanks are not to be a DPS class they are a TANKING class, there job is to take as much punishment as they can so the mage behind them can destroy whatever is in front of them. Healers are just that a HEALING class, they have a job to guess what it is, to keep your Tanks up for as long as they can, and save a ranged dps dealer if needed. A team game is what WAR is but everyone wants to be the hero and that is why they complain about this game. |

Didn't vote on this one because I still think some of the most difficult quests that I have done in MMO's were in AC. The Olthoi Queen quest one of the toughest ones out there to organize and complete. My favorite and still one of the toughest Lady Arifall Quest(probably not spelt properly). Wow has NOTHING on those. I can't comment on EQ because I never played it. |
|

well I have to say Asheron's Call, nothing beats it or touches to date. Not to have games like Eve, AC, AC2 listed on your list really says how limited your own gaming experiance is. No wonder "Other" is leading the pack with 30%. |

|
Ok, I know the older Eve players will just brush this off and probably call me a noob or some other stupid things. However I have a valid proposal that Eve should maybe impliment... The things with Eve that bug me to start with... The fact that I am still just a ship? Weren't they going to let me wander around the station at one point? What happened with that. Also if I can wander around the station what else is there to do, go into refining shops and use equipment, or see equipment stored for sale...etc. Maybe a casino or a bingo hall in the stations? How about player operated bars, like Quarks from DS9. Anyway I am getting ahead of myself. You can't tell me out of all of space we have not found one Alien? What the heck is up with that? Not even a green slave woman for us to buy and sell? What I would like to see happen in Eve... Well I am liking Eve, I am not asking for the core of the game to be destroyed or killed off. I am just wondering if these ideas would work. I like the idea of being able to dock at a station and get out of my ship and have my own quarters. I should be able to decorate them and invite others into them as well. However having a big station with nothing to really do just plain sucks. So why not add player rented spaces like a mall where they can set up shops or bars so that you can go drowned your sorrows. Give them the ability to buy casino games, and have a full out casino going on, make some people become buisness men or tycoons. Next Space is huge so why not add in an Alien Race, but not just an Alien Race but give everyone who playes 3 more character slots for "Aliens". If you create a chacter there you would end up being essentially at war with the humans. I know I know old story but to make it work into the game how about this. You create alien space very similar to what we currently have in Eve, just as big and dangerous. Pvp applys there to for alien on alien battles. Here is where the connection comes in, in each zone from 0.4 and lower there will be a tunnel connection or a complex between these two galaxies. Something that connects them, worm holes or something...etc. This is the point where an Alien or human can fly into the new galaxy and explore or cause a war. These entry points have to be extreamly well hidden to begin with, like a lotto winning type of statistic for explorers. That entry point will be so well hidden it will give the Aliens time to skill up with a totaly new set of skills and ships. So that when the entry point is found a possible war or peace could start. Each month that the entrance isn't found the stats should get better and better so that after 1 year the gate will be sure to be found. Make it so the Aliens wage wars on races of humans, destroy bases...etc. Have it so they set up there own bases in the human spaces and vica versa. Lore wise this would give us so many more missions, Covert missions...etc. Stratigic hits on stations or rogue Aliens...etc. What do you all think? |
|
|
I remember another company being that cocky to think 1 server could handle everyone that wanted to play, anyone else remember the fiasco that was Anarchy Online. Heck the first month was just given to everyone over kinda like a mulligan when they had to add another server. I do remember trying to get out of the newb zone...LOL ahhh days gone by. |

In a pickle regarding my account
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 1/13/09 3:56:27 PM
Well I would verify with my bankt that the correct address is linked to that debit card. If you have moved and forgot to update the bank then it would be your old billing address you use. That is the most common problem is people just don't enter there billing address exactly the same as the way the bank has it. If that still doesn't work, call turbine again, I have always found them very helpful. As for e-mailing them, try to get an online chat going with them and give them all the information and see what they say there. That is all I can suggest bud, it seems like a problem with your bank and the address they have on file for you. |

If Second Life was not a cash-crop MMO and had a flat monthly fee, would you play?

Sorry this is a bit of a long answer but here you go... You know in the Relm of MMORPG's there are a few that stand out for different reasons. WOW just because it landed 10Million+ people who pony up a monthly fee to play it, games like EQ who really started the MMO market, or made it more main stream. Asherons Call, Ultima online for showing us what a skill based MMO could be, and even though they are both 10+ years old still are a breath of fresh air in the stagnent MMO market. Games like EVE online and DDO both give you the ability like the games of old, AC and Ultima Online, to do a skill based character system where your not pigeon holed into being a sword fighter, mage, priest. Also in the relm of sandbox MMO's there are only a few that stick out and show there true colors, AC, Ultima Online and EVE, now even though there may be many more out there that I have not played these are the ones that stick out the most in any sandbox discussion. The final, "Game" that sticks out in the same discussion is Second Life. A sandbox game is one where you mold it to your liking just like sitting in a real sandbox, you can make anything your heart desires, a castle, a road...etc, and in this case Second Life is a great Sandbox, but do you consider it a game? There is no game part to Second life unless you are into gambling, and if I wanted to do that then I will just go to party poker or some site like that. To combine Sandbox and game together, you need goals to strive for and this is where Second life to me is not even a game. A game like AC, Ultima Online and Eve are sandbox games and even though each takes a step away from the true "sandbox" each is close enough to warrant the title. So to finally answer your question No I would not pay to join Second life because there are no goals, it is not a game to play it is just a place to go and do nothing. However I will continue to play and pay for my EVE and AC accounts because although they are not 100% sandbox, they are the closest thing I can get to it and still make it fun to play. |
