I dont know many people who pay for anew MMORPG and stop playing it before the end of the first official day of release saying it is rubbish. Nevertheless most MMORPGs lose most of their players before the first motnh is up. Tera wont be any different. Most people can get some fun from a new MMORPG but there really isn't much in TERA to draw people in volume. There is no reason not to try TERA if you like the genre and dont have anything else to do right now. I tried it in headstart and that was enough for me.

It offers you the opportunity to increase your knowledge of the genre you love
If you dont liekthe game beyond a few moptnhs it reaffirms your decison to stay in your incumbent MMO
the real issue is i supect $$$ as a lot of mmos player base being kids wont be able to afford several subscriptions easily andthey often wont be able to upgrade their pcs for new games. If they are young they may be unsure of their ability to reform friendships and get angry when the stability of their gamingword is threatened ...others may leave becasue they feel the incumbents community is is not what it used to be ...
People may enjoy tyhe frontier nature of new mmo releases when at least a large % of the player base start at thte same point ..

Originally posted by Derros Yes but RIFTS issue wasnt "mmo nomads"
It has done the equivalent of a country opening its doors to immigrants from the poorest most under developed countries of the world to replace its own population that left for a better life elsewhere becasue they ran the country into the ground.
Nomads choose a nomadic life, Rifts initial player base were not mmo nomads but dedicated mmo players that were looking for somewhere to "stay".

Right but under that scenario,
if SWTOR can get enough people to end game
and keep them there for a while,
people get attached to the game and their characters
and then as you say ,
they stay
because
"gameplay wise it isn't any different to what is already on the market"
as long as Bioware manage the game and new content, bugs etc etc ....

Rift has been heavily discounted. It was dying from end of the first month They revived it in USA at least Back to OP
Your "review" reads like someone that doesn't really understand how ot review an MMORPG.
There is nothing wrong in reviewing the early stages of a game in a positive way as long as you are not giving the reader the impressionit is a serious analysis of the main part of the games leveling process, end game or replayability and longevity prospects.
Getting "annoyed" is a very teenage emotion especially when combined with the fact you claim to have loved the story on the fist beta test you were involved in and now get "annoyed" at the mechanic. Granted a lot of teenagers will play.
You want to just kill things but that was forgotten on your first beta test when your intial experiences levelling were good.
Did they change the races/character customisation so much that you accepted it in your first go at the game and then decided it "annoyed" you on a later beta test ?

Agreed OP. If people cant get the retail box value out of this game, regardless of whether they choose to stay and subscribe, .... they probably shouldn't count themselves as lovers of the mmorpg genre.

Given my experience of this last beta weekend, I don't think we will be seeign people complaining too much about the amount of early access they get. July/August pre orders September/October November/December over 3 days or less. They stress tested 2 days .. Friday and Saturday this last weekend....so why not early access on 15th for July/August/September and 16th for October/November and december early access ?

1000 reasons to play BUT...
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/29/11 5:49:55 AM
Originally posted by Eta.Carinea They are not changing it. It is an mmorpg and as others have posted above, exploring, solo grinding, world pvp, crafting, gear drops, gear modifications, mounts, group content and raids are all already in the game. Including more "traditional" mmo fare is not likely to alienate mmorpg players if it is done well. An expansion with no voice over character/ class progression content might be an issue though.

1000 reasons to play BUT...
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/29/11 5:09:24 AM
There is nothing stopping Bioware putting out more content that is more mainstream MMORPG than Voice over cut scene based. In fact given the cost and time implications of voice over questlines, it is almost a certainty. So what would that leave us with ? A Voice Over class centric 0-50 experience and ever expanding open world planets and instanced raid/group content max levelers will want to explore and play in ? Sounds like a perfectly viable model to me.

Pleasantly Surprised, But For The Wrong Reasons...
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/29/11 4:58:34 AM
AoC was a single player game inthe starting zones, so was LOTRO and many others might as well have been given people tend to try and get to max level quickly and join a guild for some group activity and information whilst they are doing it.
What some people will not like is they will need to do their character quest / storyline 0-50 in order not to gimp themselves bu tI suspect you can probably go back and do it once you hit level 50 via other XP means if you needed to.
Others will like the fact it is the people focused on max level and endgame that miss and this allows more players to feel they can enjoy the levelling up process AND the end game.

SWG Vet...a few of my impressions:
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/29/11 4:36:48 AM
I have played a whole load of mmorpgs for over ten years and especially most ofthe recent AAA mmorpg titles on launch and through their first month or so at least.
I have built up fresh start guilds in many of these games too., where people previously unknown to each other come together in a new guild in a new game.
I have to say that whilst I agree with you about grouping in SWTOR (so far), in my experience people dont group much at all during the launch and leveling up phasesin newly released mmorpgs as people race to get one character at max level.
A lot of players were always "shy" or too self obsessed to try and form in game relationships from chance encounters and prefer to try and do that from within a guild, whereby they expect their guild leader (andteam ) to be presenting them with grouping opportunities.
Having experienced 0-18 in swtor there are certainly parts of the character quest line where grouping would seem to be quite important just to progress your class story and get your ship, and as you say, there are dungeons that require groups inthose first levels too, so ...players will need to group to do content
I don't see swtor being much different to other mmorpgs when it comes down to a final analysis of grouping 0-50.

Empire not suitable for many Teens
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 11/24/11 7:34:13 PM
I am basing it on over ten years personal experience in mmorpgs and nearly 20 as a parent. I think the Empire storyline is not healthy for the average 13 year old and it isnt healthy for an academically or otherwise under achieving under 18 year old.
