For all of you who use the line Darkfall is a "indie" game...

No they aren't. Seriously, what are you smoking? Â
You don't post any sources and and claim ridiculous things that stem from some single words you saw on Google but didn't bother to read the whole article. As for the withdrawal - the simple fact is that AV was supposed to release DF simultaneously in 50 countries on January 22nd, and instead DF has been released a month later without any mention of AV.  |

The only "relation" Aventurine could have with Disney etc. is that the Greek publisher of DF, AudioVisual, is normally publishing DVDs in Greece... obviously that includes Disney DVDs. Mind you, even AudioVisual has apparenlty withdrawn from publishing DF... |

Stop making stuff up. Check that "5,500" list again and notice there are offline people there. FFS you were in beta with me, that list showed over 15,000 people - do you think they were all online? Including 5 of my alts? FOR THE THIRD TIME - that list and number is the total amount of characters created, not people online. No, I can't provide a screenshot (not that it would help anything) because despite being in beta and trying to pre-order as soon as Tasos posted the link (pre-order register id #466) I didn't manage to buy the game. Like 3/4 of my guild, and they all have ID numbers under 15k. Yes, lots of people managed to register but weren't billed or just didn't have high enough refresh skills to get to the order confirmation page before it all exploded. In other words, the register numbers have nothing to do with successful pre-orders. |

Just so you get this straight, I repeat: that 5,500 number visible in Clan and Journal pages is NOT the number of players online. It is the number of created characters a.k.a. the number of successful pre-orders. That number showed over 15,000 characters during beta and listed offline people and their alts (like many others, I had 6 chars during beta) That's 5,500 out of the 40,000 total capacity you mentioned. Probably anywhere between 1,000 and 3,000 online and I'm being generous here. AV's plan wasn't 50% wrong. So far it looks like it was 90% wrong. So far we have "Massively" Multiplayer Online game that is so "Massive by Design" that it cannot support 5,000 subs, let alone online players. |

First of all, the first and only large game to show online numbers was EVE Online. Secondly, the number in the Journal/Clan pages is the total amount of characters created, NOT online players. You can see all chars there whether they are online or not e.g. in beta this number was over 15,000, because alts were allowed (I had 6 chars there, for instance). Yes, most games out there support 3-5k users online. Darkfall so far has proved to have serious issues supporting less. Again, 5,500 total characters created = that many succesful pre-orders (single char per server) and maybe 2-3k people online. I'll give them that because of launch, even as much as half of playerbase may be online at the same time (normally it's closer to 20% - see EVE Online; I hope I don't have to explain what are time-zones and activities such as sleep, job, work etc.). |

giving a public beta date in order to get preorders ... is not part of our business model

Hello there, trolls. Former Aventurine fanboy here. Lets just say that the stunt they've just pulled kind of nailed the coffin.
As we know, open beta starts on Jan 22. However, as Tasos explains, not everyone of the 200k who signed up will be able to play. But worry not, you can get in if you pre-order the game:
Since he mentions launch in another sentence, it's quite clear what he means by the access. Let me get my White Border... |

Hmmm. Looks like something is going on at Adventurine
General Discussion « Darkfall 1/14/09 6:15:03 PM
It's neither fanboy nor troll made. It's a trap! A website made to harvest visitors from google and make money off advertisements, if it wasn't obvious... |
|

Umm you mixed it up. I know it's easy to imagine Tasos is the lead figure because he's the only Aventurine person ever speaking, but he's just that, a spokesman/representative - Associate (assistant) Producer. Lead Game Designer/Producer of Darkfall is Claus Grovdal. |

These guys from "no name italian site" (just saying it now before the trolls bring it up) apparently went to Athens to see the beta. |

Those are actual beta screens btw. The trolls need a set of new arguments I suppose. |

Official word about the info at the Athens event
General Discussion « Darkfall 10/16/08 5:21:14 PM
Bunch of nerds hyped the event based on nothing but a few badly translated words from Greek. Seriously, anyone with a brain could guess it would be a presentation + possibly some live gameplay on 2-3 computers, typical of such events. "Public launch"? Seriously, wtf. |

Aventurine has been looking for a Senior web systems programmer since the 15th of September.
General Discussion « Darkfall 9/29/08 11:17:31 AM
Sounds like someone who'll be making web stuff linked to the game database, e.g. character sheets like those in VG, or maps with political data from the game. I see that a day without googling Aventurine is a day lost, still? ;) |

The Chronicles of Spellborn: Game Update and Changes
News Discussion « General Discussion 9/13/08 6:49:51 PM
Spellborn looked interesting long time ago but when it turned out to be totally carebear I gave up following it. If it's really FFA PvP I may actually give it a try, thumbs up for the new devs, whoever they are now (seemed like the ownership changed twice or thrice already...) |

No, EVE is not a "much simpler game". You have no clue about it apparently. It has the most expensive server cluster in private sector, and server code that dwarfs that of other games. Yes it does have hundreds of dungeons (deadspace), economy and crafting systems that makes WoW's look like kindergarden simulation etc. WoW has tons of quality PvE content which EVE doesn't have, and DFO isn't supposed to have either. That's not complexity, though. Yes, it's about logic and common sense. Games have different budgets, just like movies. If for you a game needs $40 million bugdet to be good, then go play World of Warcraft / Vanguard / Age of Conan and stop wasting my time. I'll continue playing games that are good instead. |

<Mod edit> Yes, indeed, it's easy to figure out. EVE Online, a game with 10x more complex game mechanics and server code than that of World of Warcraft, even at its launch in 2003, took 2 years to complete, with $2.6 million budget. They started with a team of 21 devs with no experience in gaming industry. [link] BTW a simpler Dark Age of Camelot took 25 developers 1.5 years to complete, with $2.5 million bucks. [link] Bottom line is, so far all the games developed for $40-60 million were either failures or McDonald's equivalents of MMOs that I have no interest in. <Mod edit> |

It is. The victim doesn't get to keep any of his equipment and you can loot everything that survived the explosion. Simple ;) Now for the rest. It's not based on time in the same sense that Darkfall isn't supposed to be - 4 newbies can kill a vet etc. In fact, one newbie can, in plenty of scenarios that I have myself took part in. Even though it takes a lot of time in EVE to develop your character, the combat is not based on time like level-based games, where a lvl 10 can't even hit a lvl 70. Yes, veterans have much more options, more resources etc. Do you think Darkfall will be different? There are still skills that will take time to train, probably much less time but still. There are items that will cost time and resources - guilds with cities, mines, crafters etc. will be at an obvious advantage etc. Time invested helps in all games, - but games with non-linear progression like UO, EVE or DFO have possibilies of anyone paricipating in activities that are simply impossible in other games due to level restrictions. EVE achieves it in a different way than Darkfall of course - by having multiple layers in everything, including combat, so that a person with 50 mil sp isn't automatically better than one with 10 mil sp, and a cruiser isn't automatically better than a frigate etc. A week ago, my Thrasher nailed a Taranis 1v1. More expensive ship, older player, nothing uncommon. NB Pretty said to talk about EVE in a thread about RV in a forum about DFO

I could name many fundamentals: open pvp, full loot, territorial warfare, open skill-based character development, city/station-building, player-run economy etc. This is why I got interested in EVE, and why I'm interested in DFO. Also, EVE's combat is not dependent on time, but it's a common belief among people who failed at it and needed an excuse. But I digress. If DFO is supposed to release with the amount of impressive features that RV has, its broken mechanics and belief that realism takes precedence over gameplay at all times, it's better if it doesn't release at all. I'd rather play a feature list, seriously. |

I expect a good sandbox MMO which excludes RV. I'd rather model my expectations on UO or EVE thanks. |
