ESO is a game that gets a lot of hate just because of the name. On one hand you have the people that wanted it to be Skyrim Online (lol) and on the other hand there is the "it's just another money milking machine like SWTOR" crowd. This basically creates a huge circlejerk against the game and gives the impression to the people that haven't really played it that the game sucks.

The truth though, is that when you actually compare ESO to other MMOs, it's just on another level in terms of raw quality. The scale of the zones, the exploration sense it gives, the combat system, the freedom of choice in terms of building your character the way you want, the big scale PvP, the fact that every single NPC in the game is voice acted, questing not being just a "Kill 10 rats" thing, developers that communicate with the community and take feedback seriously, etc. Also the thing that will make this game become huge in the future: Zenimax isn't afraid to add game changing systems to their game. The justice and champion systems will basically make ESO feel like an entirely new game, and that's really a breath of fresh air on an industry where companies like Blizzard keep making 50$ expansions that basically add a couple zones and a few new bosses, but the essence of the game is always the same, they are afraid to innovate.

Now, I've played TSW for a couple months, and it's a GREAT game, but to me it felt more like a single player game in the sense that I only wanted to play it because of the storyline, I didn't care about anything else (most likely because I hated the combat). It's a more niche game for sure (which isn't bad).

My vote goes for ESO but I won't be sad if TSW wins, both are great games. That said I don't understand why LoTR is winning that hard against EvE, to me there is no doubt EvE is the better game.

Nice post Rayzoru -- I like your thinking.  I chose TSW because it's done something many MMOs haven't done recently, and that's try something truly new.  TSW added investigations to MMOs, but maybe more importantly it isn't afraid to make players think (really something MMOs have gotten away from with kill 10 rats quests, Questhelpers and !/? everywhere).  It's different and quirky, especially with the lore and storyline. It's just the right amount of difficult.

It went out with a class-free system, and while it uses some of the traditional MMO standards (the trinity. monster quests), almost everything has a twist to make it different and more engaging.  It's use of images at various stages of of the quest, the need to hunt for clues, and simply the need to really pay attention sets it apart from every MMO currently available.

I hear your points about combat and grouping, but TSW does have some pretty great group content -- the dungeons and raids are fun and challenging, and I honestly believe the lack of a traditional lobby-based random PUG generator (dungeon finder, etc) has made the community reach out to each other more and become tighter knit.

As regards combat, the real problem is that the game doesn't quite hold the player's hand enough in figuring out the deck and synergy system.  Understanding that all weapons abilities can be unlocked, that 2 weapons are optimal, and that creative powerful active/passive synergies is the key to creating a good build is something the community has had to pick up and explain to new players, but many become frustrated before that point.  I do believe the devs have expressed some interest in improving the new player experience to better explain combat.

All the best to all the teams in the finals!  :)

In my Opinion ESO is better than TSW but that is just an opinion.

So, lets go off facts.

TSW required settings is ESO minimum require settings.

So, by power alone ESO needs a better computer to play on.(fact)

ESO has over 10,000 NPCs and TSW has just over 7,000.(fact)

ESO has over 61 million items in the game and TSW does not state it. I would assume lower but cannot prove.

You have more Character various in ESO than TSW(fact).

In ESO all NPCs has a voice.(fact)

I am sure if got all the specs and how much updates arrive per month. ESO would pull ahead.

So, to say TSW is better is only by opinion because by the numbers it falls short. I am sorry. I have played many MMO's and playing ESO I see a bright future if they stay the course.

Lord of the Rings? I just don't see how it even got so far.

Heh, everyone has their own criteria for what makes a game great.  Just goes to show this is all very subjective.  ;)

Or perhaps bad-animations-wars. Because out of every single MMO that were in this battle, the finalists (minus EVE because spaceship) all have animations comparable to EverQuest.

So, I'm curious, what MMO do you think has very good animations?

This question has been asked, very directly, many times on these forums.  I think that it's somewhat telling that posters rarely answer.  It's like the catch-all criticism that no one ever needs to justify or explain.

The five funcom fans still left in the world are clicking theor buttons a lot.
In all seriousness I don't know anyone who play a TSW.

And because you don't personally know anyone who plays, by extension no one else on the planet plays, right?   Nice to know your group of friends comprise the entire gaming population, bub.

However it's pretty obvious that TSW is getting some serious mass voting going around. Perhaps that is not that bad at all, just proves how involved they are into their game. Denying is not helping anyone really, there are probably many people mass voting on ESO side aswell. But lets not get clouded, if ESO playerbase was mass voting this hard as STW, they would be ahead by a big margin already.

Everyone seems to have forgotten about TSW Europe.

I have voted once.  One thing probably folks are not considering is that there are a LOT of overseas TSW fans.  Remember, Funcom is based in Norway, and there are quite a few European players that will come a visit here late during US Eastern time.   So, you may be underestimating our "little" community just a bit.  ;)
The community is actively discouraging duplicate accounts for purposes of voting, but there many be many folks new to

TSW's devs are getting involved in the voting and promoting it (This is confirmed). Isn't this against the rules? In contests devs aren't allowed to vote in or actively promote their game.

What? There is ONE single thread about it in the whole forum, and 1 DEV made 1 single post. I wonder how many do you have in ESO's forum...

TSW devs (confirmed) are sending emails to their "playerbase", to vote for them in this contest. What a joke.

Utter horsecrap.  There was a promotion email for a 30-day trial as part of the Christmas event, and nothing about this competition is mentioned.

The MMORPG genre is in a very, very sad state. I mean, D&D; LotRO; The Secret World... they're all games which I've played and enjoyed. But them making it to the quarter finals of any "best of" contest is just sad.

Especially when you consider that all three games have been 'circling the rim' for a while now, if it wasn't for Eve Online being in the top group, which, as its very much a 'niche' game you kind of have to wonder how that won too, you'd think the title of the competition would be 'most likely to announce closure in 2015'

And so the snarking begins...  Please refer to the "sour grapes" image earlier in the thread.   ;)

Hyperactive and overjuiced.

You thought perhaps this was going to be some kind of earth-shaking research of great import to the gaming industry instead?

At best, it's a snapshot in time of how well motivated (and tuned into internet forums) the fan bases are.  It's fun and friendly competition (most of the time) -- how seriously one takes it is perhaps related to how snarky the commenter is (or isn't).

Congrats to all the winners and thanks to everyone who came out and voted, even if it didn't make it to the finals.  Yeah, this is all for fun, but it's still cool to see the communities come out and support their games.  If nothing else, these polls are great for discussion and a chance to hear people's reasons for like and dislike.

I think you think too much about a popularity poll on a website that less than 10% of the MMO-playing population reads.

This poll is, of course, more important than the presidential election.  It's the internet, after all.

Im curious why TSW is doing so well, I had written this off a while ago as a game with great stories but weak game play and small zones - has things improved and worth a look-up?

I don't get why people think it has "weak gameplay". It hasn't... The gameplay has always been good. But it hasn't changed much in terms of gameplay so, if you didn't like it before I doubt your opinion will change. There are a few new mechanics (like ability augments and aegis shields), but overall the gameplay is pretty much the same.

A new zone has been added ( Tokyo), and lots of cool new missions sprinkled in as well...  Oh, and the Christmas event is way cool, with Krampus/Hel and new for this year, Killer Clowns!  :)

I don't see the need to hate on each others games really. The fact that TSW and GW2 are so close to me just means that they both are great games with passionate fanbases. ;)

This. I actually like both games quite a bit and play both depending on mood.

I said something reasonable on the internet and someone agreed with me. Faith in humanity restored! (thanks) ;)

These are internet forums. We don't need this crap going on. You two take it somewhere else.

Dogs and cats, living together... mass hysteria!

We've been promised Killer Clowns for Christmas!  ;)

Remove that silly 1 toolbar limitation and I'm gladly back as sub.

I guess I don't understand this whole thinking.  You have over 525 possible abilities that can be placed within the 7 active and 7 passive slots, so you have lots (thousands, really) of options within that toolbar.  Why do you feel limited?

Just curious -- why don't you want to run dungeons?  They're a lot of fun, and you can gear up in short order with just a few runs.

A few you might try:

  • Myst Online is basically combat-less MMO -- focus is on exploration and puzzle solving
  • The Secret World has investigation and stealth missions where no combat is required.
  • A Tale in the Desert is mostly about building and crafting I believe
  • Minecraft?

There's a couple new ones on the way:

  • Jane, Ever which is a Jane Austen world of RP and combat thru social circle
  • Wander, which I think owes more to Myst, and is once again more focused on exploration
Good luck!  :)

people seriously still play Myst? i remember the last time i tried to play this game, there sure is no one around, so i lasted for 10 minutes before i uninstall this game

Six people still play Myst Online and five of them are fluent in D'ni.

If that doesn't scare the crap out of you, then you have nerves of steel...

Lol. Aren't they making a Myst TV series?  :)
