TSW  probably would have been my favorite MMORPG if I could have gotten over the combat. I just did not enjoy the combat, and it still is such a big portion of the game even in TSW...

I always try to come back but I never stay because I get bored killing mobs for quests.

Wish you the best. Enjoy!

I feel the same. The game started out fun but it gets boring so fast. And the bad combat doesn't help either. Sick of the just killing all the time in mmo's lately.

Take a break and do some investigations and sabotage (stealth).  RP in TSW is pretty good too -- Arcadia server.  :)

i think the combat itself is not that bad, the animations are what hurt the combat IMO.

Outside of that i do enjoy the game, but playing solo is VERY HARD even doing side quests. And the community is very antisocial. Even people in front of you just ignore you and walk away when you talk to them. Let alone talking in general/LFG chat.

I think this game strongly requires to play it with friends in order to progress.

Try the sanctuary and noobmares global (cross-zone/cross dimension) channels.  They are both very friendly and people talk about pretty much everything under the sun.  And also super helpful with questions.

thanks! i will join those. Are they server wide? i know servers are connected but i like to create each character on a different home server.

Yeah, both those channels work across zone and across server, so doesn't matter where you are in the game.  Noobmares is for casual Nightmare mode dungeon runs.  Here's more info:

The best thing they could do for new players (as I've posted in other places) would be thin out some of chaff from the skill trees: skills that their datamining reveals are never used, and either repurpose those skills or replace them with skills that allow more synergies between different weapons.  Optimally they would put these skills in the first three levels of a tree or make a tree synergize with a category of ability, like DoT, penetration, block, etc., that the tree doesn't currently have a synergy with.

I can tell you from experience that one of the worst feelings is to discover that the weapons you've chosen have no synergies, and you are struggling because of it.

Failing that, they could add about a dozen new starting decks and use the tutorial to steer people to more viable combinations.

Abilities you may never use may be very popular in another deck if some has found a good synergy, or in a PvP setting.  Simply because you haven't personally found a use yet, does not mean it's not useful.  There may be some improvements to the in-game decks, though, we'll see.

Did you ever use the ability search function in TSW?

TSW, another themepark that I doubt gets any  updates with the B2P model.

Well, now, you haven't been paying attention, have you?

http://www.thesecretworld.com/updates

Doubt there will a combat revamp, though abilities are constantly being balanced and tweaked in the patches.  There MAY be some re-figuring of the starter/in-game decks to make them stronger as part of the New Player Experience update coming in 2015.

For those of you struggling with combat, hop in the game and join the sanctuary channel -- lots of folks can help improve those decks to get you humming in combat again.  It's all about the synergies, and there are easy ways to un-gimp yourself.

Guess I wouldn't enjoy it either if I didn't have a good set of decks and wasn't very good at combat. But I do and I always have fun. :). Welcome back OP!

btw, come join us on the Sanctuary channel -- I think that may be new since you were playing.

It's hard to know exactly what you are doing that is resulting in you feeling stuck with the same deck, but here's some general tips:

  1. Make sure you are equipping 2 weapons - you will build up resources twice as quickly.  One weapon is gimping yourself.
  2. Make sure you are synergizing the conditions being triggered by actives.  Find passives that exploit active conditions.
  3. Use the Search panel to the right of the wheel to search on conditions in other abilities.  Buy and equip ones that are not too expensive and switch up your deck.
  4. Remember that you can equip a passive from ANY weapon branch, not just your 2 equipped.
  5. Understand that you can unlock all weapons and skills and and that you can create multiple decks - use the Gear Manager under (C) to swap in and out.  Keep tweaking your decks - it's all about incremental improvements.
  6. Read up on the TSW forums and the many other deck guides on the web for example decks (tswdb.com is a good one to start).  Google "yokai tsw build guide" for more in-depth theory
  7. Keep buying skills for your 2 weapons with SP under (K) so you can equip better QL gear
  8. In chat, type /chat join Sanctuary and ask lots of questions.  Lots of helpful people in-game.
Good luck!
Wow, thought ESO would win most improved hands down.  Gratz to the winners!  :)

Last time I logged in was to check out Tokyo but was unable to without grinding out a large amount of tokens or cash, something I didn't feel like doing for a game I don't play that often. If Tokyo is still locked away I guess there's no reason for me to check in on TSW anymore.

The number of tokens required is quite low and doesn't require a lot of scenario running.  There's an alternative route as well with one of the sidestory packs, that allows you through with pax.

Yep, I wanted to post "You need some Further Analysys on the huge grind you've mentioned", but Ortwig was faster :)

If I'm getting it right, there was nothing about the access (ingame) to Tokyo, only the access (store) one - as in playing Tokyo without having Issue#9. Something like Issue#8's case, where everyone can play 1 scenario for free, but the hardest mode and the 2 other scenarios need to be purchased.

I guess there won't be missions and stuff (like in other Issues' case if you don't own them), they will simply allow players to grind their way into Tokyo (through scenario tokens or investigation), and then they could grind AEGIS in there. So Issue#9 will remain a good purchase, if you don't want to burn out of boredom :)

"improving current tutorials and guides to help people take their first stumbling steps into The Secret World" that's great news indeed.

I never said "huge" grind. It would probably only take me a weekend of grinding to get to Tokyo. But I'm not going to waste a weekend grinding just so I can poke around Tokyo for a couple days.

And because I'm not willing to waste that weekend grinding, there's no point in coming back to check on the game because all the new content is locked behind that grind.

And just for clarification IIRC it was 80 tokens (the one scenario I did was 20 min on a timer, mindnumbingly boring and awarded 2 tokens) or 1,000,000 pax (I have ~100k)

I did the hotel scenario 2  times with friends (elite level), and the castle and mansion scenarios once (elite level)  and got my 80.  I guess your definition of grind is pretty low.  I suppose having a cabal helps, but I'm becoming increasingly amazed that people think doing anything even twice is considered "grind."  Even so, I am thinking the token level is going to be reduced even further.  Sheesh -- please don't ever move to Korea.

Holy necro!

Here's the official descriptions of the in-game decks.

There are many better custom made decks out there as well as tips on how to make your own:

Looking forward the last piece of Tokyo.  Also, the new player experience improvements will make a huge difference -- glad this is on the radar.

They have worked on the game.  For some reason, you're under the impression that because you don't like the game, it must be bad.  You are incorrect.

It's not the game, it's you.

Considering how poorly the game is doing, I'd say you're wrong.

I just started playing the game. I can see why it is not so popular. You have to think to solve some missions and puzzles. So it slows the game down and that turns off this generation of mmo players that need everything instant. A lot of things being posted as flaw are not really. Its just a different kinds of mmo. As far as combat goes, its mmo combat not an action combat system which all the younger players want. Kind of sick of the action combat in mmo's now. Once you learn how to setup your skills and passives the combat become's really fun, but you have to think about how you want it to be. The skill's and passive's you pick matter. Its not like other mmo's where you level up and just put a new skill on your bar. You have to put thought in everything you do in this game.

Yeah, dumb and faceroll is the one thing the Secret World is not.

Hey all, seeing as we have a bunch of new players coming on board, thought I would lay down a few things that are really good to know at the outset, and that the tutorial could do a better job of making clear.  Feel free to add more tips (there's a lot on the official forums as well, but repeating here to make it easier):

  1. Be sure to take 2 weapons.  You can pick up one weapon as part of the tutorial, but it's not really made clear that you should take a 2nd one as soon as possible; the 2nd weapon helps you build resources much more quickly and will always give you a stronger build.  You can go back into the HQ right away and get the 2nd weapon there, or you can do the mission Moose gives you in Kingsmouth to craft a 2nd weapon.
  2. When picking weapons, open up the Skill panel (K).  Mouseover the weapon title and the tip will tell you what role the weapon typically plays (survivability, support or damage).  You can make good decks with all weapons, so don't worry too much and just have fun!
  3. Be sure to check out the panels next to the Ability wheel -- there are 2 especially you should pay attention to: the Deck panel to the left, and the Search panel to the right.
  4. The Decks panel shows some sample pre-made builds, but these decks are NOT the best builds in the game.  The best decks are the custom ones you create on your own (more on that later).  The decks are nice for the outfits though, when you complete them, and give you an idea of how to assemble a deck.
  5. The Search panel is a great way to find ability synergies/combos.
  6. "What is a combo" you ask?  Okay, if there is one thing that you should know about combat in TSW, it's combos/synergy; everything is built around them.  Here's the important thing:  you want to buy and equip abilities that exploit the Conditions your active abilities trigger.  So here's an example: say you are using a weapon ability that triggers the Hindered Condition.  You will want to find and equip more abilities that exploit Hindered.  Understanding this one rule of thumb will help you make infinitely more effective decks.
  7. Remember that Search panel?  That's a great way to find other abilities that use a particular Condition.  So type in Hindered, and find all the other abilities that trigger or exploit Hindered.
  8. Another super important note: Passive abilities can be from any weapon, not just your equipped ones.  So when you are searching, don't worry if a passive is from some other branch of the ability wheel
  9. It's best to focus on your first 2 weapons initially and find those combos, but know that eventually you will unlock every single weapon, skill and ability in the game.  Later in the game, you'll be creating more decks and be able to swap them in and out using the Gear Manager.  Sometimes you'll need a different deck for a particular mob, or you may want to switch from a dps to a tank role.  Pretty much up to you, and you can create tons of decks.  Each deck, should use the synergy rule of thumb though.
  10. There is no need to respec or re-roll.  Remember that you can unlock everything, so re-rolling only puts you back at ground zero.  "Respeccing" is merely a matter of tweaking your deck to better exploit Conditions.  Typically it's a matter of buying a few more abilities on the wheel then equipping them to make yourself more effective.  It's a course correction, not a major operation.
That's the tips most often missed, but there are lots more little things that will help.  For more detail and help, check out these threads:

Also, be sure to check out the global Sanctuary channel for in-game help.  Type:
/chat join sanctuary

To the OP: the problem you are running into is looking at the abilities in a vacuum.  While any single ability may not seem like a lot, when paired with certain other abilities (actives or passives), the can make very effective combos, especially if you are looking for a particular effect, or building a deck for a particular role in the trinity.

In the example you mention regarding Blade Torrent and Bamboo Cutter, you may very specifically want a deck that builds more aggro, especially if you are tanking, while for a dps or support deck you obviously want to avoid that.  The skills are similar, but different enough that you can identify a specific purpose to using them and build decks for each.

In fact, the whole purpose behind the skills is to allow you to create your own swiss-army knife and be able to swap them in and out based on the need at hand.  You may want a soloing deck, maybe one specifically set to single target, one for AOEs.  And of course decks for each of the trinity roles.

It sounds like you are thinking about each of these abilities as powers in and of themselves, when you need to look at the effect you are trying to build, then create sets of abilities that make sense for that effect.  Use the Gear Manager to build a whole bunch of decks, then use them like golf clubs -- specific sets for specific purposes.

Thanks for the guides.  I've seen a lot of these before, but it's nice to have them all together.  What happens is people buy the game, start playing, pick skills that sound good, start getting their butts kick as they get to higher levels, then start going to forums and researching how to put together a stronger build (if they don't just give up).

So they discover the skills they picked have no synergy, or were nerfed, and they have to rebuild, because you can't respect, you start adapting your build or just make a new character, you did learn something but it feels like you wasted a lot of time.  Eve is the same way.  You can't just jump in and play you have to do heavy research first in order to come up with a strong build and not have wasted or non-optimal points.  Also not a fan of having to take skills you'll never use because they're next on the skill tree, in order to get to the skill you need.

The highlighted sentence is probably one of the biggest misperceptions about combat.  Because each character can unlock the entire set of weapons and abilities, and the entire set of skills, there is never a need to respec.  Re-rolling a new character simply puts you back at ground zero, when often all that's needed is a tweak to the current set of abilities to improve synergies between actives and passives.  Often, it's simply picking a condition that your actives weapons are triggering and looking for a few passives that better exploit that condition, and it generally does not require a lot of AP work to get them.

Granted there is a bit of a learning curve, and the system doesn't really work like any other current MMO, but that doesn't mean there aren't good and effective builds that can be made from a build that isn't working so well.  It;s really just a matter of course correction, not major surgery.  And there are plenty of sites and people willing to help with advice, if that's what's needed too.

I've subscribed to J2JonJeremy on YouTube, but it seems he's just starting with the game. Nice fellow, very interesting to watch, and I'm currently waiting for his next video on the series.

But I'd be interested in watching end-game stuff too. I've searched but haven't reached a definitive answer.

Probably one of the more consistent streamers for TSW is MJ over at Masssively/Twitch.  You can find most of them archived here.

Happy New Year all!
