Just curious -- why don't you want to run dungeons?  They're a lot of fun, and you can gear up in short order with just a few runs.

  • Myst Online is basically combat-less MMO -- focus is on exploration and puzzle solving
  • The Secret World has investigation and stealth missions where no combat is required.
  • A Tale in the Desert is mostly about building and crafting I believe
  • Minecraft?

There's a couple new ones on the way:

  • Jane, Ever which is a Jane Austen world of RP and combat thru social circle
  • Wander, which I think owes more to Myst, and is once again more focused on exploration
Good luck!  :)

people seriously still play Myst? i remember the last time i tried to play this game, there sure is no one around, so i lasted for 10 minutes before i uninstall this game

Six people still play Myst Online and five of them are fluent in D'ni.

If that doesn't scare the crap out of you, then you have nerves of steel...

Lol. Aren't they making a Myst TV series?  :)

Things that have been removed from the mmo genre in some games:

Classes

Open world dungeons/zones

Experience points

Levels

Time to get max level has been reduced or removed in some games

Travel by foot or mount

Difficulty

Grouping

Exploration

Camping

And now you want to remove combat?  just put this genre out of its misery its not even a shell of what it used to be

I don't think the OP said anything about removing combat. Just doesn't want it to be the only option.  More options, not less.

Generally speaking, killing things is a big part of MMOs.  Like someone else said, you can get levels by farming/crafting in AA, as well as some other games.  However, the most popular method will involve both killing and crafting.  I'm trying to think of a game that doesn't involve killing, and I can't really think of one.  Even something like Minecraft (not an MMO I know) that a large part of which is crafting/building/exploring, has a major component of killing.

I think MMOs may not be someone's think if they don't want to have killing as a major component of most games.

I don't think it's too much to ask, though, for other passtimes in addition to combat in an MMO.  Sure, crafting has always been there more or less, but there's much more that could be done to add variety.  Other forms of conflict exist in the universe besides bashing things with swords...

Not to mention you use more than two abilities.  I watched several videos of gameplay...everyone had the same machine gun that fired three rounds.  Most people then switched to a mechete of sorts when the mob got close.  It was just that....3 rounds, mechette, back and forth.

I really really don't see the point of this complaint... Anyone who decided to start with an assault rifle got the same starter model gun, so? Any noob character with (the same) AR is firing a 3 round burst. Yes, it's called "Safety Off", the very first AR ability you get when you choose to start with an assault rifle. And yes, most people like to use a melee weapon to fight at melee range, and a blade is a popular choice. What is your point?

Yep, it just makes me wonder if most people just didn't get past those first few starter abilities to a better set of combos.  A lot of people thought (again, bad tutorial here) that one weapon can work fine, not to mention no clue about active/passive combos.

I envy those of you that find value and enjoyment in this game.  Sadly, my time in beta with it was the quickest out of any MMO I've ever either beta tested or played at launch.  One hour is all it took.  And looking several months post launch, and now a few years...for me it was the right one.  It has the absolute worst combat system in the MMO market and unless you are a sandbox MMO, combat is nearly everything.  Rift and WoW have better combat.  At least the animations in WoW are fluid and responsive.  Not to mention you use more than two abilities.  I watched several videos of gameplay...everyone had the same machine gun that fired three rounds.  Most people then switched to a mechete of sorts when the mob got close.  It was just that....3 rounds, mechette, back and forth.

And Im not a WoW fanboy.  I don't even play WoW, partially because its combat is too slow...and Im here saying WoW has better combat that TSW.

But again, envy to you guys that enjoy it because the them of the game is like no other.  Wish it would have been made better.  I would love to get into a paranormal MMO with an actual fear factor.  The sounds and ambience look great.

This mirrors a lot of what I think about the game.  I feel like I should like this game, but if I had to choose between this game and say, WoW, or this game and plenty of single player games, I'm going to choose the other option.  They have gotten the load times down so the game isn't a burden to play, but that's apparently not enough.

I think the quests are good, better than most, and the pace of progression seems fine.  The environments and general theme of the game seems really cool too.  The graphics, while not the best, are not bad.  Certainly "good enough".  Strafing left or right looks pretty weird, but it's something I can get over.

I am reluctant to even bring this up, but for me, it really comes down to the combat.  With RPG combat, games can tweak two difficulty factors.  Either setting up the character for combat can take time, or the combat itself can require a lot of paying attention.  TSW chose to do both.  Players have to select skill combinations to be effective, along with gear, as well as combat that is designed to be a challenge.  It's too much.  For someone (like me) who wants to focus on the quests and the stories, finding out you've borked your character with AP/SP selections is a real disappointment.  The subject matter of the game doesn't seem to be something with a broad appeal, and the combat mechanics just reinforce this.

That said, given that Funcom is refocusing on mid-tier gaming and multi-platform stuff, maybe it's OK that TSW isn't going to have a broad appeal.  For people who want challenging content and game play, TSW provides it.  The reasons I don't like the game more (combat) seem to be reasons that other people really like the game.  *shrug*

The learning curve is steep, no doubt about it, and I think most don't have the patience to stick with it and figure things out.  I remember my first build being pretty darn weak, and getting owned by some pretty lowbie creatures in the first zone.  I figured at that point that I was doing something wrong, but it was before I started reading up on the forums, so at that point I switched over to some of the pre-built decks in the game for blade/chaos (Martial Artist I think was the first -- this was even before they created the simpler starter decks).  As soon as I switched over I noticed a pretty significant improvement in my combat -- was downing stuff much more quickly.

After that I really started getting into the active/passive synergy stuff and the improvement was huge, and I started experimenting a lot more with the passives from other weapons.  I actually got to the point where I was having fun with the combat, swapping decks around and trying different strategies against different mobs/bosses.  Even in my early days I was never a 1-1-1-2 spammer, but I did have a rotation down, with the occasional special ability (Chaotic Pull is one of the more fun abilities, by the way... )

Which makes me think -- maybe we should start posting some of the more fun builds on these boards?  It may just be that folks never got to experimenting, and putting some out with some reasoning behind how they work might help.  Sure, there's a ton of TSW build sites now, but maybe some of us have some cool combos we've created along the way worth posting here.

This. Especially #2. Best trailer ever (imo)

My vote would go for this one :)  http://youtu.be/4A4i12-yhAA

Heh.  I liked this one too -- first I ever saw: http://youtu.be/lsLXQEeLiI0

In all of them I especially like that the vibe goes against the typical heroic grain, and yet it somehow feels pretty darn heroic.  :)

Yeah, the population is small, but the game is really more about zen like exploration and solo experience anyway...  Depends on how buys you need the environment to be around you, I suppose.

A couple others probably worth mentioning:

EverQuest Landmark is very much focused on building and crafting -- they are adding combat to the game, but I think it's only there if you want to engage in it.

Haven't tried ArcheAge yet, but hearing it's very possible to level without engaging in combat at all...

Games are, after all, really just a collection of preferences.  Where I start to reply and poke people is when they have decided that I must agree with their opinion about TSW (or any game).  Where I start to reply and poke people is when they decide that objective information about TSW (or any game) is irrelevant.

My line in the sand is any post that tries to convert opinion to "fact."   Opinions, positive and negative are fine, but when belief becomes The Truth, you're way deep into Troll territory.

Edit: the list above is completely subjective and my opinion.  Have no problem at all if folks disagree with it.

Cheers, I bought the game recently but haven't had a chance to play it yet. People seem to talk about the game in the past tense a lot so I wondered if it was too late to start out with.

Nah, it's fine -- there's a ton of people running around, was just on last night.  Check out the cross-zone/server Sanctuary channel (type /chat join #Sanctuary) or the event chat (type /chat join #event) and talk with folks if you're interested in getting a group run going.  You may also want to check out the primers on the Newcomers forum:

http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=66643

The thing about TSW is that it can be a lot of fun solo, but it's also pretty easy to group up as well when you feel like it.

1. Best theme, story, lore and quests around

2. Because of this trailer: http://youtu.be/7yMIcKmsbzk

3. Really fun dungeons with very little trash

4. Super deep deck-based combat system

5. Overall, a nice/mature community

6. Quests that require use of brain (investigations)

7. Non-combat quests (sabotage)

8. Gear only takes you so far - playing skill and decent decks are necessary

9. Game treats you as if you have an IQ higher than 12

10. Clothing completely separate from gear; complete freedom to make your own look

11. Fun events (going on this weekend)

12. Best Halloween events period.

13. The game is actually challenging, but not over the top difficult

14. Best cut scenes and NPCs, hands down

I agree with all of this.

Here's a couple more, as well as some criticisms:

15. Great RP Community and devs who actually pay attention to RP

16. Game looks great on DX11 max settings if you have the rig, but see criticisms

Criticisms:

1. Very little handholding, though the community steps up pretty nicely here

2. Due to the lack of handholding, few learn how to create a solid deck/build, (see all "spamming 1-1-1-1-2" complaints about the game).

3. The game could really use a much better intro and tutorial.  At least let get 2 weapons into their hands and teach the basics about active/passive combos (this is a side effect of a non-class/non-cookie-cutter build system, but you've got to orient people)

4. Combat animations could be better/smoother and use more variety

5. Laggy on lower end machines/cards

6. Major problems with Win8.1, DX11 and Nvidea cards (staying on Win 7 or Win8/DX9 addresses most the issues, but still)

7. Endgame can be grindy.

I note that you aren't making a list of the positive comments about the game in this same thread.  But, no, you aren't doing a pros and cons here are you?  What are you doing here, actually?

I am making a list of the problems that destroyed The Secret World.

This is spelled out exactly in the title and the first post.

you forgot to add one:

1.  Trolls on MMORPG.com...but put an asteriks *not confirmed yet

It's a long, very well disguised, troll, but a troll nonetheless.  Hmm, let's go create a thread called "What Destroyed X" on each forum, and see how long we can go before the mods nab us...  OP, go back to a game you like -- I think we can survive without your "analysis."  ;)

I have seen you repeatedly defend the game, usually with statements that have less substance than the above,

Just keep to facts and dont pay attention to troll fanboi posts. Some bits and pieces in this thread  are worth a good discussion. You're talking to a guy who called TSW best game/MMO ever and GW2 trash :)

I just logged in again in GW2 and its a breeze of fresh air compared to TSW. Oh, OP, this is another one for your list. The Events/World bosses are NOT enjoyable and only meant as a tool to get you doing lairs.

Because there's absolutely nothing trollish about coming over from the GW2 forums to the TSW forums, creating a thread called "What Killed The Secret World," filling it with a specious list of Things You Don't Like, and then proceeding to list why GW2 is so much better.  ;)

Pardon me ?

I am not now nor have I ever been a GW2 player.

Also the "List of specious things" only the first 6 were mine, the rest were culled from comments of people in this thread.

I note that you aren't making a list of the positive comments about the game in this same thread.  But, no, you aren't doing a pros and cons here are you?  What are you doing here, actually?

Here's a discussion on XP gains in PvP on the forums, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice by doing nothing but PvP in TSW.  It's got the best storyline around.

http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=63591

And the one thing that is common between all 5 types?

"Quests that require absolutely zero brain activity from the person sitting at the computer."

See The Secret World for examples of interesting quests.

You're doing it wrong.
