In your opinion: What was the dumbest MMO mechanic ever made?

I am not getting into what is linear and what is sandbox. Its like arguing about How many angels can stand on the head of a pin. I will say that I have played Baldurs gate 1 & 2, Icewind dale 1 & 2, Oblivion, Morrowind, NWN, Mass Effect, Fallout, Fable 1 &2 and sadly I have liked them better than any MMO I have played. (I have played just about all of the popular MMO's and some not so popular) So I agree I am about to give up on MMOs.

I wonder what Orson Scott Card would say about this. |

Ok, first of all I want to say that like many others here I have been a critic of the current crap er crop of MMOs. However I do see a hopeful sign. (at least to me) One of the things that I think is wrong with MMOs is once a game gets a few years on it, it becomes very difficult for a new player to progress in the game. The starter areas are barren and getting a group to help you is a chore. Also if you ask questions the veterans (some of them) in the game will laugh at you and call you nub or other insults. I recently heard about the new expansion for WOW. The more I thought about it the more I think it is fantastic idea. By changing the areas and putting new quests in the game, everyone who starts out with a new alt will be a newbie. Eve has also announced a change in Sov for its game. I say it is about time. Unless you got in with the hardcore people you had very little chance to run with the big boys (except as a mining slave or cannon fodder). So anyway some people may not like the changes to these games but I see it as a good thing. I mean something had to happen to shake up the MMO world. I congradulate both Blizzard and EVE for having the nerve to do something I think is good for MMOs.

Whats happened to the MMO and video game industry?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/11/09 9:40:30 PM
Well from my perspective .... Its the MBA's I give as an example the game "DOOM" I believe 5 guys were involved in its creation. One thing they did was allow editors to be used to create new areas for the game. There must have been thousands of user created levels out there for the game. ( I made a few myself). I really think that today if DOOM was made today by a big company the MBA's would say "You can't do that we can't make any money if the users create their own areas" The MBA's would fail to see that it might create sales for the game. They are always after the quick buck so they can look good in the next quarterly report. MBA's hate risk. So any big company that is infested with MBA's will ALWAYS go with whats popular at the moment. You wll NEVER see inovation from a large company. It is going to take an independent company that does not have MBA's to come up with anything innovative. I think American car companies show what MBA's do to a company. They kept making big gas hogs long after their day had passed because of the profit margin big cars have. Sorry for the rant but I have worked for 40 years and have a lot of experience working and attending meetings with MBA's.

Totally illogical MMO pet peeves...
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/08/09 8:20:32 AM
My pet peeve is Anime !!! I can not tolerate the way the characters look. Every time I see one I want to grab a pair of shears and give them a haircut. I will not play any game that has anime. I would rather have a cystogram than play a MMO that has anime. BTW I have had a cystogram and they are not fun.

Everyone is always complaining about MMO companies never trying anything new. Well here is CCP trying something very new and different. I think they should be encouraged in this. Do yall want to play WOW clones forever ?? As far as the hate for consols go get over it. It just isn't 8 year olds playing them. I am 64 and I have an Xbox 360 and love it. I played EVE for many years and to me it got stale. Now I may resub because of this. Once again I say good going CCP don't let the assholes get you down. I guess it true that "The pioneers get the arrows"

General: Massey: Why Not A Mystery MMO?
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/23/09 10:21:42 PM
If only it could happen. Back in 1978 I got my first computer ( A TRS-80). Playing adventure games was really fun. I remember the golden age of those games. Companies such as Infocom had great text games. Then Sierra came out with "Mystery House" that had graphics. They were crude but back then it was great. I was in on the beta of "URU" It did fail however. It was an online adventure game. I also was in the beta of "Seed" It failed also. Oh well maybe one day someone will come up with one that works. However I think that most of the online gamers want fighting so I am not holding my breath. A lot of people think adventure games are dead. There have been some however that have done well recently, In fact they are releasing "The curse of Monkey Island" again. It is thought of as one of the best adventure games ever.

I agree with you 100%. You do realize you are going to be flamed for expressing an a view that seems to be in the minority today. But anyway I am with you on this. LFG :)

My son went to Full Sail. He really enjoyed it. I will ask him if he knew or had him as one of his instructors. My hats off to you as I know what kind of schedule they put you through. Classes starting at all hours. They worked his tail off. Thanks for the info.

Age of Conan would definately be more successful with a Item shop/Pay expansion
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/14/09 9:49:54 PM
Ok, maybe I am behind the times but I just don't get why anyone would play a game where you can buy your weapons and equipment. To me a game is where you play to earn your gear. I am sorry I just don't get it. I will never play a game where there is an "Item shop" in any way shape or form.

I guess I am getting to old for games
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/01/09 8:28:39 AM
I saw that Mass Effect 2 has a new trailer. So I went to the site and I had to enter my date of birth. Well the slider that showed the years stopped at 1950. Since I was born in 1945 I guess they think I should not play their game. :)

What was your favorite game as a healer?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/29/09 3:32:51 PM
I really liked the cleric in EQ 1. They were death on undead, had great buffs, and could heal well. Some of the other MMO's might have had more powerful healers but I had the most fun in EQ 1 as a cleric.
