Yes I think the core game play is working with a team of players as the crew inside the interior of a player ship which makes operating the ship much more efficient and entertaining, but you can solo fly ships if you desire by moving from the different consoles in the bridge.

A few more features I did not mention are that a portion of the milky way galaxy is modeled with hundreds of stars with there real locations and names with randomly generated planets orbiting them.

There are alien empires that control areas of the milky way which border the human territory and there are opportunities for battle’s, invasions or covert surveillance type missions on the borders.

The alien empires are planed to be playable but are only for restricted testers and developers at this time but this will allow Factional player PvP between the different races.

But there can also be peace treaties or alliances between the races and this game play is supported by the developers in the role-play sections of the forums.

And there are positions of authority supported by the in game faction system and also by the developers on the role-play forums like fleet admirals, civilian diplomats, politicians  and judge’s that players can be promoted too.

If anyone is interested in trying a MMORPG in open beta that has star ship interiors and many of the features and game play I think a lot of us where expecting from STO I made this post about it http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/129794

And I added a preview of the open beta in this thread http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/130578

This is what I expected STO would be like but obviously with higher production values, more powerful servers and thousands of players.

I cant see how anyone would be willing to accept STO without player star ship interiors but I would like to see people who are advocating game play based on the ship external view explain how that could compensate for all the amazing possibility’s I think it are demonstrated by this game.

I would play STO no matter what type of game either Linear, level and loot based or sandbox, skill based with open factional PVP or any other combination of features and game play as long as it had player star ship interiors.

Because I think its the fundamental concept the entire game has to be based upon to fully reflect the expectations of the Star Trek franchise, if STO is lacking player ship interiors I think it will just be another game like Earth and Beyond or Auto Assault that have very limited appeal and no long term player retention.

If the developers really think that player star ship interiors are not important or wanted they are either uninformed, ignorant or motivated by financial, schedule or capability problems in my opinion.

This is my preview of the game play and features of the MMORPG Star Quest Online that’s in open beta, if your interested in Player star ship’s with interiors, sandbox and non linear game play and open PvP with great role-playing opportunities then read on.

Don’t bother if you cant get passed the low production value graphics and sound effects, Beta bugs and server lag, this game is developed by a small independent group and what it lacks in visuals I think t more then makes up for in other aspects.

I am only mentioning the features and game play possible not my impressions or opinions to keep the post as short as possible

I recommend any beta testers to post on the games forum requesting a position on a player ship as a star fleet character to really appreciate what the game has to offer when first starting, although this is not absolutely necessary.

The game has a skill based system and attributes that improve from in game actions, you can change your profession or learn new skills or get other players to teach you so there are no levels or class restrictions.

When you create your avatar you can choose between a career in the star fleet specializing in Medical, tactical, engineering etc, be a civilian who trades between planets or a pirate attacking other ships or hijacking them.

The majority of the game play is centered around player starships which have interiors that you can explore and interact with, but you can walk on planets and in space stations.

You can choose a 3rd person view inside the ship walk about, go to the bridge and talk with your crew or zoom out to the external view of the ship but still operate the GUI of the station you are sitting at.

There are different systems to repair or upgrade located onboard the ship and also stations like Helm or Weapons that have GUI’s you can man and operate to perform ship functions like piloting the ship or firing weapons and raising shields.

If the ship takes damage in combat you can leave the bridge and travel to other parts of the ship to repair the damaged systems , or fight intruders on the ship. You can teleport to other ships or onto the surface of planets for away missions.

There are training missions for new players and scripted missions for captains of Starfleet ships that include defending systems under attack from NPC ships or exploration missions scanning for life on planets, these require a crew of players on a ship to work together to achieve the objectives.

There is also the constant threat from player pirates, events like attacks from alien space ships and invasions of worlds by the developers, Earth was attacked recently by NPC ships and aliens invaded earth which the players had to try to defend against.

The role-play aspects of the chain of command are supported by an in game faction system which allows players to work there way up to command there own ship or be awarded medals and prestige.

If you decide you don’t want a life in the navy you can start the game as a civilian, mining for ore to make ingots and selling them or reverse engineering and fabricating items to sell for profit. Or just sign up to serve on another players ship as a member of the crew.

Eventually you can earn enough for your own ship and trade between planets or even create your own colonies on distant worlds. You can place buildings on the surface of your planet and put space stations in orbit around your colony.

You can play a bounty hunter taking contracts on NPC’s and Players and track them down for the reward or smuggle illegal cargo between planets.

The game features full loot and PvP with no safe zones, there are NPC Police and Marines that attack player criminals on the core worlds but the life of a thief and a thug is possible, there’s a criminal system to mark players character with there crimes and a prison system to incarcerate offenders when caught.

Pirates and smugglers have to contend with NPC and player Fleet ships scanning and boarding them to search for illegal cargo or capturing them and holding them in the Brig.

Your avatar has to perform the normal functions of eating, drinking and sleeping etc but these are not time consuming and really encourage role play, you can be stunned and incapacitated, take physical damage and receive lethal wounds that eventually cause death.

There are various forms of weapons to defend or attack other players or NPC’s with , equipment like scanners, communicators, medical kits and some have GUI’s. There are picks and smelters for mining and tools for fabricating items from blue prints that you can reverse engineer to obtain.

You can get an apartment or buy your own house deed and place it on a planets surface and decorate the interior with furniture etc.

Player avatars and ships are persistent in the game world so you cant log of to escape or to save your ship, but you can go to your apartment or ship quarters and lock the door before logging.

Multiple players can be active on a ship during different time zones so players can crew its positions 24 hours a day or you can choose a player ship that operates in your time zone.

There are probably things I have missed and not really explained fully but I hope people try this out and support this company which is achieving so much with such a relatively small budget and team size, they are improving the graphics and recently got a new server to help with the lag.

Why would i be concerned about any violation of copy write material ( if your statement that they are is in anyway valid )when i have no vested interest in the project at all?

What I find funny is the fact there is a donation button, this is not an MMO in development, it is a basement project some guys have thrown together.  Yes, the graphics are pretty horrible, but again what can you expect from someones little personal project.  Also, if the game has good mechanics in spite of the graphics, it might be a cult hit.  Don't expect it to hit mainstream or even pick up a distributor.

Which is exactly one of the points i was trying to make if a small independant developer can implement player ship interiors why cant the developers of STO.

Not flaming it, but you see homegrown projects like this all over the web and they are not true mmo's, just portfolios showing what someone can do in hopes of getting hired by someone major.

If you had actualy looked at the website, forums or applied to beta test and played the game which i can see you have not from your statement this is infact a MMORPG space game which has many functional features including space ship interiors.

I call BS on this, I check quite a few mmo sites and testing sites quite often and besides what was hoped for in STO there is no other game that will have the interactivity inside ships that STO was thought to be having.

I did not mention the name of the game because it was not the post topic and did not link to it for the reasons I have already stated.

If you can't name the game then there is not a single one out.  And if there is one in development it is one that has no backing and or known dev team, let alone not even having a name to help it garner fans.  To come to one of the major MMO sites and say something about a game no one knows about pretty much shows how little you know.

Just because you don’t know about the game does not make it magically cease to exist and dismissing it immediately because it not developed by a well know company is very narrow minded.

All your statements are only your opinion and not facts and your accusations about me are totally unfounded.

Rumors are rumors and just because someone probably told you there was such a game don't mean there is actually one.

Thanks, drive through

If you have read the OP, the title or any of my posts you would of understood I am not talking about rumors but an actual MMORPG in beta, but because you lack reading comprehension or the attention span necessary to read a few paragraphs you have spent your time jumping to conclusions, making wild accusations and ignorant statements with not relevance to the post topic.

Am certain that an Indie Developer would luv to have their game spread around and made known.  I do not think the moderates will take action against you for posting a link or mentioning the title.  We all have discussed other titles before, such as SWG, Eve-Online, Planetside, even providing links.

But if not then, you can help promote the title by placing the game name or link banner as part of your signature or as a quote.

The reasons why I have not posted a link to the game is that I predict the thread will rapidly degenerate into pointless “this game grafix suck lol” type posts and it will get locked or moved for being of topic.

And I don’t know what the developers intentions are concerning this games PR and I do not represent them in anyway and only started beta testing the game last week and don’t know what there wishes are.

I was hoping that people genuinely interested would spend a few minutes to find the game for themselves and that would help to keep the above mentioned type one line posts to a minimum but I can see that has failed so website is http://www.castlethornsoftware.com/new_sq.html

What i mean is a concept is just an idea and that is all it is, it has not been proven or picked so with that in mind i do not see a reason for this thread up -- unless you wish to talk about ideas.

It is blatantly obvious you have not read my OP, the title of the thread or any of my other posts on this thread or have very poor reading comprehension.

The whole point I wanted to make was that there is already a MMORPG in beta that has player star ship interiors you can explore and interact with.

So there is no reason to debate about concepts of star ship interior game play when there is already an example of how it can been done which we can talk about.

If you arn't willing to mention the games name your either Lying, or exagerating.

One of the two, you've no proof to back up what your talking about, and me and many other don't believe you.

Do you have anything to say about the player ship interior debate or just pointless and silly accusations?

Perhaps if you had spent your time looking on the game list instead of writing your post you would of found it and maybe have something constructive to add.

Look folks.... a substantial majority of MMORPG gamers like to do one thing in a game.... that is....kill stuff.   Next on the list is to go exploring.  Then theres a sub-culture of strange humaniods who like to do this thing called "crafting" which I'll never quite understand but seem to serve a useful purpose in most games, especially when they make things that help me kill more stuff faster.

Those statments are your opinions and not facts, i would argue that most players have no choice to do much else then that becuase thats all there is to do in most games.

Ship interiors are necessary for how many of the above activities?  None?  So what is the purpose of them? To walk around from one room to another and do what?  Talk to each other?  That's what /chat is for.... I don't need to see someone's avatar to do that.

You are correct they are not absolutly necessary but i think they vastly improve the experience, if you cannot imagine or understand the examples of the possibilitys of star ship interiors then try the Beta and inform yourself.

The developers dropped interiors because it is a feature that will appeal to a small number of players, for reasons that the Dev's probably can't even fathom if they are gamers in line with the rest of us.

This statement i think again is just your opinion but is a possibility, but looking at various forums for STO i think the evidence clearly shows many players are upset. As evidence for my claims i think the examples of Earth and Beyond and Auto Assualt show that external view and limited player avatar interaction do not provide a very succesfull form of gameplay.

Stop looking for a Star Trek Simulation, no, you won't be able to go on a 5 year mission with 125 other players, besides, who really wants to be the guys in the red shirts.

Im not sure what your point is unless your making a joke, i am advocating player ship interiors not star trek simulators, 5 year missions or wanting to be the unfortunate guy wearing the red shirt, all though having 125 players on a ship would be amazing.

I will show and example of the game play I think many expected from STO but will probably not be possible in light of the developers recent interviews but all possible in the Beta by a small independent company which is listed on the game list on this site.

I will not directly link to it as this will probably cause the thread to get locked., after it gets full of people posting flames about how the graphics suck which is not relevant to the discussion of the pros and cons of player ship interior’s.

So you start a character and choose your selected career science, engineering or tactical etc and move from the a planet or space station to the player ship you transferring to as crew.

Once onboard you travel to the bridge and take your position at a station like scanners, weapons, helm etc , and you activate the console and get an interactive display. You can perform various functions like scanning space, firing weapons or monitoring energy levels and damage control.

You can see the bridge and all the players when the console is active and can communicate with each other and follow the captains orders. You can see what the ship is targeting on the large view screen or zoom out into external view at any time and watch the ship but still perform the same functions as the interior view.

You can move about all the decks of the ship with the turbo lift or climb decks with the access ladders, And can leave the bridge to conduct repairs on ship systems, repel intruders on the ship, go to the ships gym, mess hall ,medical bay or just go to your quarters and log of.

The social interactions possible in the ship interiors and all the emergent game play that develops really gives in my opinion a true representation of the concepts of the Star Trek shows and will be expected from the STO game but I doubt it will provide them.

SWG has ships and you’re able to walk around them, at this point the ships aren’t the size as the ones in Star Trek.  The jump to light speed part of SWG is the only good thing going for the game.

SWG also allows you to man different parts of the ship, along with pilot this is co-pilot, gunner and engineers to fix the components of the ship as they become damaged.  If STO doesn’t provided a seamless way to walk around a ship why it’s moving it won’t be worth playing.  I can already play 3rd person ship combat game set in the Star Trek universe with out a monthly fee.

I was aware of the player ship interiors for SWG but except for boarding the millennium falcon at the beginning of the tutorial with hans solo shouting “come on kid” I have never been in one in game and don’t know to what extent the implemented functionality or game play possibility’s they involve.

I think he might be mistakenly talking about EVE.  But that's not going to be in-ship character play.  It's going to be in ports and stuff like that.  If he can't/won't give us an actual title, I think the OP is just mistaken.

 - Phos

Phos if you had read my post i cant see how you could of possibly presumed i was talking about Eve, which as you have said is planning to probably only have player avatars in ports and not in player ship interiors.

My original post was about the player ship interiors debate and I did not intend it to come across as “bragging”, I only used the game as an example to show that the developers reasons for not having player ship interiors in recent interviews are in my opinion questionable.

I’m not going to post a link to another game considering this is the STO forum and not the beta forums but its on the game list on this website so if anyone is really interested in beta testing an inde MMORPG with player ships with interiors as an example of how it can be done they have the opportunity.

After the disappointing news recently released from the developers of STO, I was amazed and delighted to find that there is already a space simulator type MMORPG in beta testing with player run star ships with interiors.

I have been testing for a week and after experiencing most of the game play and social interactions in game that I was expecting from STO I am even more frustrated and bewildered that the developers of STO with there relatively massive budget and development team size have decided not to included star ship interiors for player ships and changed the focus of the game so far from what was expected by many people.

When such a small team can produce a MMORPG (of course with very sparton production values but still offering great game play) offering what a lot of people wanted from STO I can only speculate as many other posters have on this forum for the reasons.

My expectations of the industry have dropped so low that I don’t have any false hope of influencing anybody else or the developers just wanted to let people know it is possible to realize are expectations but I doubt the STO developers will do it.

(EDIT after speaking with the developers of StarQuest Online i have added this link to the game i am talking about)

radar in the next patch

Spotters and Radar

Radar for Battleground Europe has one primary goal: attract game play. We are implementing the first stage of a radar and ground spotters system to augment the EWS that is already in place. This system will display air targets on the in game map. The displays will be organic and not in real time, simulating the communications between a pilot and his support services. The updates wil be amalgamated geographically and temporally, meaning that you won’t get exact locations and you won’t get real-time updates but in generally you will get a feel for where enemy air forces are so that you can plan interdiction. This feature wil be theater wide, there will be no option for skirting the system at present. This system will also not be interdictable at first implementation though we greatly desire to add this ability in future refinements of the system. This system will however, promote group tactics and make finding an air battle much easier.

Have you considerd practicing flying on the training server?, you can spawn any plane and just mess around practice shooting and droping bombs, and fighting other players. Then when you get enough confidence you can fly a plane from an air field behind the frount lines.

I realy enjoy playing infantry too, but if your finding your spending alot of time without any action then you can check that you are on an attack with an AO (attack objective) indicated by a red flashing box around the enemy town, make sure you spwan from a mission that has a little truck icon which means that a mobile spawn is available then you will be straight into the battle.

If you defending likewise make sure that the town has a green flashing box around its name indicating that the enemy has placed a AO on the town, the 2 red flashing infantry and armor icons indicate the number of the respective enemy forces involved. I find this is the fastest way to get into a battle is to spawn at the depos that are closest to the enemy's direction of attack which is normaly the depo's that are spawnable for the enemy if they capture them, or the depos in the part of the town that faces the enemy FB's (forward bases).

If you want to set up a Mobile Spawn for an attack, just drive a truck out and then stop and press d to deploy it, then press escape to make it and UMS (un-maned mobile spawn), then you can spawn from it on the mission you are on.

If you have any other questions illl be glad to help, remember to de-spwan and get a RTB (return to base) when you get kills to get the maximum rank possible then you can start using things like sniper rifles, lmgs and paratroopers etc.
