Where does all this hatred come from? Just wait till release.

Two things:

1. This is just a little trailer, it does not show how many worlds there will be and how big they will be.

2. The size of a world does not really matter. Want a few examples?

  1. Vanguard had a vast world, but just closed a few weeks ago.
  2. WoW has a wounderful big world, but players do not care and play always the same instances.
  3. FFXIVARR has a small world cut into tiny zones and is very successful.

5. Notorious AFKers:

They turn AFK in the middle of a dungeon for 10 minutes without a comment. They are standing around in battlegrounds to farm honour-points. You wanted to invite somebody into your group? You posted an important question in your guild-channel? Haha, is AFK and leaves you alone in sometimes delicate situations, where you get whispers and invites from other people.

4. Ignorants:

They do not pay attention to any kind of game-mechanics. They constantly pull mobs and try to bomb them. They are damage dealers but make less damage than the tank. They never use any kind of crowd control and they ignore important mechanics of their very own class. But they want every loot that drops, of course. They do not listen to any hints you give them. And if there are wipes, they just blame the healer or the tank.

3. Arrogant tank/healer douchebags:

They know that grouping would be impossible without them, and they keep telling you that throughout the whole dungeon. They often make mistakes, but somehow find a way to always blame it on everybody else. They are patronizing and thin-skinned, which makes communicating with them a very annoying experience. In the end they provoke a senseless argument over nothing and leave the group just before the last boss.

2. PvP Cheater-Exploiters:

They know all the tricks and bugs one can abuse especially in battlegrounds. They use all of these to their advantage all the time. If it was a real life card board game I could hit them with my fist, but in an anonymous online-game everything is possible. I have played a lot of games in my life, but I have never met such an amount of cheating as in MMOs.

1. Elite raider show offs:

They are telling all the time, that MMOs are much too easy these days, that nobody knows how to play them correctly. That it was best when they had classic Naxxramas on farm-status (which was only true for 0.01% of all players, but somehow I have met thousands of players who pretend that their old raid-guilds completed Naxx and AQ40). However, they never stop playing only to just lament all day and blame everything on these evil casual-noobs, who seem to have invaded the MMO-world.

I always wounder what the term "sandbox" really means... I have found two completely different meanings!

1. An MMO where there is no handholding, no quests, etc. However, players can craft almost everything.

2. There are no classes. Instead you have just to maximize your skills via brutal grinding in order to own everybody else in pvp.

FF ARR seems not to be the right game for you. It is more for hard-core players who rush through the leveling process and then spend all the time raiding. However, their crafting system is very good. And there is cross-platforming between PS3 and PC.

TSW is the right MMO for players who want to try something different. The setting, the puzzle-quests, etc. If you want to level as a pair, this could be a lot of fun.

Rift is basically a game for players who like MMOs like WoW, but prefer a very deep and open class-system.

ESO is a huge disappointment - especially for players who like to quest together with others it is a painful experience.

GW2 could be the right choice. I like this game very much. Questing and especially exploring together with a friend is fantastic. Some of the dynamic quests a great, most feel like your standard MMO-experience. However, the overall system makes it very easy to do everything together. There are 100 little things in this MMO, that make you think "Why does not everybody else do it this way?"Combat is great. And there are always some hidden little dungeons full of traps and dangerous monsters. Keep in mind that there is no end-game-gear-progression and no raiding. For many players this is a huge problem. I think it has some advantages. There are enough 5-man-instances, special dynamic events and of course WvW. And due to downleveling just clearing the whole wold-map stays a challenging experience.

1. I chose WoW over EQ2 for two reasons: 1. Because I did not want to buy a new PC 2. Because WoW was presented as a more casual game. MMOs had already a very bad reputation as highly addictive and time consuming. That WoW becomes exactly like this as soon as one reaches endgame was a huge disappointment for me.

2. Less time consuming does not mean easier. When will MMO-players start do understand the difference?

3. You missed my point! I said the most important factor was the mindset of the players. There were a lot of casual players with no MMO or even video game experience at all. And to me this was the best thing ever in WoW. Because they just played WoW like any other normal game. You know? Just having fun with others.

To me the best thing about those early WoW times was the fact, that the majority of all players had no clue about MMOs.

Everybody was just playing the game and having fun. All zones were full and everybody helped each other. And there was a lot of common RP.

There were no guides, no AddOns, mobs were harder to kill (all ogers were elite!), quests were tougher (no hints on the map), community was far better. Just getting to a certain place could be an adventure (no teleporting, less gryphons, mounts available at lvl 40 and much more expensive).

Everybody was experimenting with the skill trees and most importantly: Nobody cared about items! Although items were important due to the design of the game, the players did not bother too much.

Today it is so different:

-A lot of teleporting.

-AddOns that tell me exactly what to do in every situation.

-There is no time to enjoy the game, all you have to think about all the time is items. How to get better items where, how and when - for PvE and PvP. There is always this huge pressure to keep up with everybody else item-wise. Which is completely absurd, because - think about it - there is no real difference if you have a sword with +1 strenght or +1000 the game is still the same.

-As soon as I join a group, I get whispers how I should play my character differently: Where I should put my skill-points, which AddOns I have to install, and of course that I should get better gear ASAP.

Just one example to end my comment:
I prefer a form of PvP, where players fight each other around TM, just to have fun, over a "honor-system" where it is very effective to just stand passively around in a BG and farm honor-points for stupid pvp-gear.

So you mighty hardcore-pvp-players are deeply afraid of this big and evil carebear-crowd?

Who are these "carebears"?

You mean the same "carebears" who destroyed Darkfall? Seriously?

This whole sandbox-open-hardcore-pvp-argument is shit - what you really want is this: Outlevel other players and then gank them. Obviously this leads to four problems:

1. Players rush through content (early access, etc.) instead of enjoying the game and then complain about the lack of endgame.

2. Players only seeking PvP, if they have an unfair advantage, which is the exact opposite of PvP (think about it).

3. The rest of the community is appalled by the overall behaviour of the gankers.

4. Less fun, because in the end you always need some weak "carebears" to gank ;)

It is the same like with every other MMO. If they have a good system, they should just stick to their system. The MMO-crowd is famous for complaining all games to death. However, blaming the hypothetical casual-noob-carebear-players is getting a little boring.

I really liked the open dungeons in GW2: they forced grouping, had traps, a boss fight and a nice reward at the end.

Angry Joe is spot on:

1. PvP is good.

2. Free development of your Character is fantastic.

3. Crafting is nice.

Everything else?

1. Grouping is impossible during normal questing - in an MMO?

2. Monthly fee PLUS cash-shop is pure robbery. The example with the mount proves it.

3. Most things you do in this game do not feel epic at all. Look at his examples in the video.

4. Too many bugs.

5. Zone restrictions and bad phasing design are very annoying.

6. Too much camping.

I played it for one year and had a blast. WvW is fantastic. Combat is better than in most MMOs, it is challenging and fun. When it comes to exploring and questing this is by far the best MMO on the market. For those who wounder why I do not play anymore: I just have other hobbies that I enjoy much more than playing video games ;)

I will never understand this kind of typical contradiction in MMOs:

On the one hand all this crying for "an aim", "hard core stuff", "longer leveling time", "harsh death penalties", "grinding seperates the men from the boys", "real endgame" etc.

on the other hand this huge market to get by all of this - botting, cheating, gold selling, paying for leveling, paying for raiding, etc.

What is wrong with you?

Ah, thank you for bringing back some memories from good old vanilla WoW ;)

Do you remember? In WoW, in the beginning, it was exactly the same! Everybody could ninja all drops. That led to so many conflicts and you could not even kick them...

1. Instant gratification

What do you mean by that? If somebody wants to master all hard mode raids in WoW, he needs to play 30 hours a week for several months.

How many players did have Naxxramas on farm status during vanilla? 0.02 % of all players world wide? How many did just enter Naxxramas? 2% ?

The problem are the items. Because nobody aims at "having fun with difficult encounters", but "getting the BiS ASAP", players just tend to rush through content like 5-man-instances. They do not care about the boss mechanics. They just blame the healer. They do not even try to play the game as it is supposed to be played - "just give me epics!"

2. Casuals

Casuals do not care about goals or gear. They just play for having fun. Because they have less time to invest into an MMO, it would be exacttly the casual players who want more challenging content in MMOs. However, MMOs tend to be very tedious, where you have to do certain dumb tasks again and again and again, until it gets interesting.

As you can clearly see - it is the hardcore players who prefer stupid repetitive gameplay to maintain their elite status over casuals. Please stop blaming the casuals for all the stupid gameplay in MMOs. If skill would be more important than playingtime in MMOs, many "hardcore" players would stop playing MMOs. This is a matter of fact.

3. Endgame Raiding is the "real" game

In FFXIV it was so obvious again: Nobody cared about the gameplay, an open world, good quests or challenging content. Everybody rushed through the game in order to reach the endgame, where "the real" game begins. I read this on these forums all the time. So please stop lamenting over MMOs being easy. You want them to be easy!

The "secret" Pillars of MMOs are:

1. Addiction

Make the game very addictive, so that players invest a lot of their spare time into it.

2. Grindy Progression

Make them invest even more time, because there is some kind of progression that is very grindy and tedious.

3. Peer Pressure

Because MMOs are a social experience it is very easy to put pressure on players not to turn away from their heavily addictive playing style. Your guildmates depend on you and you on them. If you and your guild want to achieve something, you have to be always properly geared and you have to help your friends, too.

4. Fake Competition

This is my favorite one: Include some kind of competetive stuff like PvP. Give the players the illusion that there is some kind of competition in relation to skill and knowledge. However, everything depends on something like gear, which can only be obtained by investing a lot of time or by just bying it over an online-store.

This is how you earn money nowadays!

This game is really bad. Don't know where to begin with... There is no tactic involved - too much luck

Playing WoW for one year without any idea, that gear is important - I was just having fun.

1. Gear

This whole looking for the next piece of armor with better stats thing is so boring and the reason for a lot of bad things in MMOs.

  • It is completely unrealistic, I have never seen a metal helmet that makes me stronger or even smarter.
  • It fools the players, because it pretends to create some kind of progression. But what is the difference between a sword +10 and a sword +150? NOTHING, it is just numbers - the content always stays the same.
  • Players feel like they have to do certain stupid things in a game to get the proper gear, before they can do the stuff, they want to.
  • It destroys the basic idea of PvP.
  • It creates a very bad attitude - "I am more worthy than you, because I have better gear!" This is crazy.
  • Players get addictet and spend too much time playing an MMO.
2. Leveling
I like the idea of learning my class and having to earn new skills. But that could always be done with quests and special trainers. What I hate is the fact, that over time my character gains a huge amount of healthpoints, strength etc.
  • This is unrealistic. All stats should stay the same to a certain degree.
  • It destroys the basic idea of PvP.
  • I hate it, when I pass through starter areas and every mob around me dies just when it comes close (because of my aura, thorns, etc.)
  • It devides the players.
  • It creates an unnecessary problem with areas that have to be for certain levels. I would prefer a game where all content is always a challenge.
3. Killing
99% of the time the only thing I can do is to kill things. I would like a system where I can interact with NPCs in various ways. Talk to them, enchant them, fool them or attack them. That would open up for more RP and would be more fun. And I would like abilities for my character that are useful in other ways than just be a killer.
One has never to think. Never! Just go forward and kill everything. What about riddles and puzzles? What about making the classes more flexible? What about abilities like "persuading". Or what if thieves could also learn some cone artist stuff? In WoW everytime somebody came up with a creative idea to kill a boss in an instance, this was called an exploit that had to be fixed. What about content, where "exploits" are part of the game?
4. Guides, AddOns, etc.
OMG. You cannot just play the game nowadays. First you have to read a guide that tells you exaclty what kind of build you have to use for your class. Then you have to watch a video that explains how to kill a certain boss. Then you have to install certain AddOns that tell you exactly what you have to do when and how. I would prefer a game where you never know, what is coming. Make the boss fights easier but surprise players and make them watch and think.
5. Instant Travel
I prefer the classic experience where getting to a certain place is already an adventure! I always loved the times where you met other players in the open world.

Some thoughts on this matter:

1. This has been happening in WoW with payed chinese players for a very long time.

2. I have always thought that leveling is one of the important fun parts of an MMO.

3. WoW has a very big open world with tons of fun quests. If people are willingly paying for skipping all of this, something is wrong with the game design.

4. If leveling is the stupid part and every MMO starts with endgame-stuff, why not removing leveling at all?

5. No. MMOs are not complex and do not require "learning" by "new" players. Whenever I watch somebody who normaly plays shooters trying an MMO the first reaction is:"And that's it? When does it get interesting? I can even play without looking at the screen!"

I do not like your survey, because it misses a lot of important points:

1. Does an MMO have to be gear-oriented.

2. Do you prefer a endgame-gear-treadmill.

3. Do you prefer PvP where everybody is equal (lvl and gear does not matter).

4. Do you prefer a combat system that is more action-oriented with fewer skills and things like parry or dodge.

5. Should time invested into the game be the most important factor.

6. Should swords and armor pieces have stats?

7. Should players be able to rise their basic stats like health?

etc. etc. etc.

I have spoken with a lot of players who normally play ego shooters etc. They main complaint about MMOs: "The gameplay is far too dull." So much for the argument, that people have to be introduced into MMOs. Clicking some abilites in order to kill some stuff is not very complicated. In most MMOs like WoW or even FFXIV you just keep standing around during fights. Every first level of any ego shooter is more difficult than most endgame stuff in MMOs.
