I started playing WoW a few months (4 in playtime, holidays in between) back. Aside from having a lull before the expansion hit, where my shaman just hit 90 and any prograssion for about two weeks felt utterly useless, I'm having a blast. And I filled the lull with getting me some shiny mounts, which is nice. :)

Definately worth giving a shot!

ps: it can happen you think the combat is dull/annoying. Class choice does matter a lot for enjoyment, but that's probably not really news ;)

I think more people should actually watch some E-sports before judging the whole thing. Quite a few people with "I've never watched esports because I'd rather play myself" and "it's not a sport" combined in one post. I always respond with: so you never watch any sports? Else one would make a fine hypocrite ;)

What the problem seems to be (and I've only read the first page) is the focus on action combat here. OP doesn't seem to get the combination of action combat and the trinity and I think that, in their core design, they might not be compatible. I cast a heal to someone in front of me, only to have him move away in the last split-second. It doesn't say anything about the skill of the healer if he then dies, only of the unpredictability of people.

I, for one, don't like pure twitchy/action combat in my MMOs. I actually prefer the 'old' style which I know and love from WoW, RIFT, SWTOR (and many more, yes). I've dabbled in TERA, played GW2 quite a bit, played Planetside 2, but I never got into them all that much. I like having quite a few of skills (not the current trend of having 10-ish and that's it) and gradually learning in what situations each of them is good. This is in both PvP and PvE.

Currently I play a healer class in WoW (Druid if anyone cares) and do both PvP and PvE. Both vary a lot, as in PvE I should know about the boss hit interval (when to cast), keep my HoTs up and know when to use cooldowns, either because of boss abilities and taking off some heat or what to use when hell breaks loose. In PvP there's way less time to react and even less when you're high priority the target (just 95% of the time). I have to know perfectly which cooldowns to pop, what skills to use and when to use them or I'll be see-through and walking to a corpse very soon.

Now I get to the point of why I think this combat style and the trinity go together and why action-based and less to no focus on the trinity work best. When I go into a raid/battleground people expect me to know what I'm doing and to know the ins and outs of my class. Which also means knowing my weaknesses and trying to deal with them best I can. Because I'm so specialised (healer), I create a mutual dependency. They need me to keep them alive, I need them to stop others from killing me, as I cannot do that myself effectively. All specialisations are really different, but the created system of dependencies helps us work together as a team.

Now, if I were playing an action-combat MMO in the same setup, I as a healer would propably have a tough time. Usually you can take fewer hits, as you are able to dodge everything. So if everyone dodges everything, it's busy work dodging, but there's nothing to heal. And if I don't dish out damage I'm utterly useless except for fixing mistakes. And fixing mistakes all the time is a rather poor job, one can easily imagine. So it might be better if I do damage then. Heck, we don't need healers as long as we have a self-heal to buffer for a mistake or two. That's why I think it doesn't go well together.

TL;DR: So to summarise: it's either an environment of codependencies where combat is slower and people are very specialised against an environment where people are very broadly oriented, but mistakes are punished personally and attacks can be dodged. You don't need a healer or a tank when nobody is supposed to take in any damage.

ps: I know I forgot to mention some stuff there. I forgot to emphasise the 'old' combat system lending itself better to role specialisation as you are supposed to take damage and any role other than dps works in that system. Also it's much easier to land your skills on other people that way, which makes every role feel rewarding (because missing a 2 second cast heal can be really painful). The combat can also by 'twitchy', but it's twitchy in another meaning (cooldowns, fast reaction to mistakes, etc). Anyway, I hope I got my point across.

pps: Also I agree that we can do with more roles than 3 and even hybrids (i.e. a dps/cc class and a healer/cc), which allows for much more dynamic group setups and innovative play.

Then it should be doable I suppose. It's only hard with the social interactions, but if you prefer a single player approach to ESO it's almost like any other single player game.

I have been playing RIFT and GW2 together for quite a while before I put RIFT on a hold. It was mostly because of the community and the awesome RP guild I had which kept me there, whereas GW2 was a refreshing wind without the cool community.

However it gets really tiring over time, as there are so many people and you just can't keep up with all that happens (be it gear, updates, new people in the guild, RP arcs, etc..). Especially because I couldn't play for long periods of times anymore. I dropped RIFT when I found a nice guild in GW2, although I still log in from time to time.

It's okay for a while, but to be honest the games aren't made for it (well, maybe GW2 could be played more casually), so whilst it's definitely possible, I wouldn't recommend playing 2 MMOs to their full capacity.

Pay cash for gems, trade gems for gold, and pay 2 win?  Quality gaming at its finest.

I believe it should be called pay to shortcut. Then again if 'winning' is finishing a part of a game for money then some winning it is.

I am so eager to play this game! I love the Orcs Must Die! series and this is really good news :)

Hope its a bit like Dungeon Defenders too :D love the grind for loot heheh.

I'm with you there. I would've loved to have more of a PvP dungeon defenders, but the gear scaling was just too horrible there..

I must say this thread is a refreshing read. It's been a while since people were openly admitting to like SWTOR and not be drowning in a sea of negativity.

I played from launch until the first anniversary before I quit, actually hitting Tatooine the first day of early access. It was a blast and recently I picked it up again. Luckily I have forgotten most of the sidequests, which makes playing through them much more fun.

All in all it's a good game for what it does and roleplaying in the star wars universe is plain awesome :D Have fun on your journey through space ;)

Love the idea. I like racing games, but always miss the social component. And the implementations that have passed in review weren't really good, so I hope this'll do the trick.

Maybe take a look at Trions recently announced game, TROVE.

It's not really resetting, but the worlds end and you enter upon a new one. Although I think it's different from your standard MMO, if it's one at all.

I don´t know about the real size, but RIFT tripled the game world with the Storm Legion expansion. It´s also available for f2p, so nothing is stopping from checking it out :)

I must say i really like the critical questions. Most interviews shown make me think the interviewers don't have the balls to ask them.

How about hard dungeons? It should be possible to design dungeon encounters as hard as raid ones. Smaller group content? Even two-player things are possible. He's not talking about solo (because endgame kinda means grouping up and meeting people, however shocking it might be), so look at the group sizes. You don't need 10-20+ people for a challenge...

And if you really want the big groups and not the hassle of raiding and organising, then world raids like they have in RIFT or GW2 (even though they are different implementations) are a possibility.

So I guess there's plenty to do without raiding, if only the devs made it possible...

As a direct answer: not that I know of :P

It's not too far away from WoW, but RIFT is doing well and is a fun game. Aside from the challenging leveling (unless you keep strictly to content 2 to 4 levels above your content for the first 50 levels) it has what you're looking for.

It does have the 'pick a character and be anything'-model you seem to loathe, but you choose a role (the standard tank, heal, dps, support) and stick to it for the duration of say a dungeon. And if the healer leaves you might be able to fill that role as a dps is easier to come by. At a certain point the gear you accumulate makes it harder to switch, as you'd need an alike set for tanking and dps and know the rotations of both specs to do both at a progression level.

Hope it helps. :)

It's almost as if some people forget Europe/Mediterranean area has a history as well: Egypt, Greece, the Roman Empire, the middle ages/renaissance, colonising (Africa, Asia, Americas) and much more.

It's not that hard to think of settings either. There have been a lot of conflicts between France and England (hundred years' war), Germany wasn't Germany for a long time, there have even been vikings. It's a much wealthier history than the USA has and it's much better known and easier to get into for the western public than the Chinese history and culture.

I'm all for subscription, but the box price plus the subscription makes no sense. It's a ton to get into a game and then I have to keep paying to keep playing? I'm fine with putting down let's say 20-30 euros and pay 6-10 euros as a subscription, but the regular prices of a box for 40-60 euros and a subscription at 15 is just too much for the amount I get to play (and want to pay). Just my thoughts... :)

I really enjoy watching Starcraft 2 matches on live streams. I do not get the fun of League of Legends (or any other MOBA for that matter) or Call of Duty (but that's probably because I like BF3/PS2 and tanks). That doesn't mean it can't be fun for others and I'm aware of that.

Now, leading to my actual point, the great thing about these games is that, when watching, you could actually decide to buy the game or hop in if your already own it. You can play on an equal ground with the pros and then lose some because of lack of skill.

Compare this to WoW, or any other MMORPG, and you'll see the difference. Not only does your non-WoW player (or player that's unfamiliar with WoWs skills and classes at endgame,  like me) get lost in watching, the commentary is just a huge load of jibberjabbering. Also if I wanted to play and see if I can do it, I'd have to jump into the game, level my sorry bum to 90 and gear up before I've got the ability to even try to play at the same starting level.

The concept of having to have an above basic understanding of the game (as with arena battles) won't do it for almost anyone that isn't playing WoW and has never done so. Battlegrounds might be more enjoyable to watch, but then again there's also the barrier of entry. Don't say low-level battlegrounds, because they get ruined by heirlooms and therefore do require the same idea of gearing up.

I just don't believe MMORPGs are fit for e-sports, no matter how badly we want it. The only possible options I see are GW2 (with the upleveling to be viable and it being fairly easy to understand) and PS2 (fps does the trick).

@Battlerock: Same can be said for sports, look how many watch those. I personally enjoy spectating a good game of chess or starcraft 2, certainly not mainstream. That doesn't mean I go and spread the word about how little I care for watching football.

Why would you want to farm in this game...

i travel trough the wilds and things happen while i travel, dailys and loot just come on naturally.  I play like 3 evenings a week and the dynamic worlds and combat are still fun.  Just seeing NPCs on the move and hearing their conversations pointing me forward to my next adventure is just plain fun.

i bet more the half the players have never seen even half the events in this world, i still find new things every day.

This is true. I guess most people don't care about the fun to be had immersing yourself into the world, they just see the skinner box of shinies and rewards. Higher mental processes don't seem to exist with the majority of the population.

it's still the best themepark out there IMHO; not bad for a dev company's first attempt :)

as soon as they put a new starting zone in there for both factions i'll pop back in with my wallet open (i've done each of the current ones 4x and if i start again i want to start a brand new character)

First of all you probably know that's never going to happen. Secondly you can level through instant adventures and pvp past the starting zone (assuming you mean Freemarch/Silverwood) really fast now.

The pure starting zone (mathosia and the defiant one) is reduced to basically nothing and my fastest time there is 12 minutes (defiant zone) :P

I'm confused how they are going to explain away the Ewok's story...

This is like 2000 years before ABY, so how would a race have NOT evolved in that time?  I suppose you could argue de-evolution, but AFAIK Ewoks weren't discovered until Endor.... otherwise 3PO would have know at least a primitive form of their dialects.

There are more things in SWTOR that don't truly correlate with canon. This is just one of the things 'the people' want I guess.
