Total Biscuit's take on The Elder Scrolls Online
General Discussion « Elder Scrolls Online 5/22/12 2:09:38 AM
Solo...soloable...whatever. I do understand your concern with it. This point I find in particular is disconcerting and has been since I heard it. However, if just the main storyline is a solo storyline I do not think it will ruin the game if other features are on point. They do seem to be getting lost in the trap that BioWare did with SWToR where they are trying to make there single player game experience shine through in a singular story. Whether they can pull it off better than BioWare will not be known until we see it. Its all speculation. By deciding to go in the direction of an MMO as opposed to co-op play they will have to change certain aspects of what was traditionally used in the ES line. Its inevitable. In my opinion I am surprised they went MMO before going co-op but its not up to me. I doubt they will deliver a gamebreaking PVE experience. I really don't think that is there intent either. If anything may really shine in terms of gameplay with ESO it may very well be the PvP. Again though, all speculation. I wouldnt read TOO MUCH into the fragments of information that are out there right now. There simply is not enough and they are relatively cloak and dagger about the majority of it. I dont think any one game will change the genre in one release. It will most likely be a series of small changes from multiple titles over multiple years that lead things in a new direction. We simply do not know enough about the overall scope of this project to praise it or condemn it. It may be great, it may be horrible. Its all speculation. However, if World of Warcraft would have been a failure I do not think it would have had a major impact on the single player Warcraft series at all. The community would have said "I told you so" and Blizzard would have continued to focus on their single player games. The players would have continued to buy them. ESO whether good or bad will not change the quality of the single player games previously released. Provided they continue their single player lines in the same tradition they always have I dont see how ESO's success or failure has any impact on that whatsoever. Its also been strategically placed in a timeframe that will have little to no effect on the current lore. |

Total Biscuit's take on The Elder Scrolls Online
General Discussion « Elder Scrolls Online 5/21/12 3:41:39 PM
Its amazing how much information about the game is based entirely off of two interviews and a few speculative articles. From what I have gathered: *It is 3 faction PVP From this it appears a good majority have immediately gone back into SWToR frenzy. Just because SWToR screwed the pooch has no impact on ESO at all. The Hero engine is an engine, and SWToR bastardized it by their own admission. What Zenimax does with it will determine their own game. BioWares successes and/or failures are absolutley no indication of what another company can do with that engine. The single player storyline rings of SWToR yes. However, the SWToR "idea" was inventive, just executed incorrectly. If anything Zenimax had an opportunity to see how not to do it and improve on it. The fact that they are endorsing public dungeons as opposed to 100% instanced dungeons indicates that they understand the issue with heavy instancing and how it kills community in a mmorpg. This would also indicate that although the main storyline may be 100% solo-able and instanced, the entire game is not going to be like other titles. The fact that they have stated they want to break the mold with reducing/eliminating quest hubbing is a positive statement. It does not promise a groundbreaking achievement but at least we are moving away from the modern themepark template and attempting to go in a new direction. Even if its just a baby step. Matt Firor gives high hopes of a positive PvP experience based on his history and what we have seen from him with his DAoC PvP game (not what we imagine he will do in the future). The game very well may be horrible. However, everything I am reading does not offer much other than speculation to prove this will be the case. It also doesnt prove it will be the "WoW killer" or change the genre as we know it. The game hasnt had any real decent coverage yet and the majority of what is out there is pretty much just hype by Gameinformer for their June edition. It's humorous to read the overreaction sometimes. |

I also am not criticising WoW for being what it is, I am criticising it for making it even easier than it is. I was going to introduce my daughter to WoW, but at 5 years old she really seems to like challenges. I was perfectly fine leaving the game to others, and am perfectly content playing an unpopular game. I have played them all now and the one I am playing is better in many regards for what I am looking for in a game in comparison to what is currently available. I would never have wasted time posting about this game if they werent spamming me these ridiculous "offers" in my mailbox. I prefer my mmorpg's with more challenge and less chutes and ladders. Good luck with your world of whatever... |

I do not know how TESO will pan out, but to say that the game will be a failure based solely on the use of The Hero Engine is akin to saying that because I do not like powdered donuts it was the doughs fault. Or that because at one restaurant their spaghetti made me vomit, that no restaurant can make good spaghetti because they are using the same noodles. SWTOR's failures were based on developmental and creative ideas along with poor decision making as far as class balancing for PVP and improperly used instancing which destroyed any chance for an immersive environment, Among other things that did not have anything to do with the engine. A good example given prior was Vanguard. I have come to enjoy that game immensely. However the use of the Unreal engine in Vanguard and its use in other games has had a dramatically different outcome. Even with the same engine, overtime and with attention they have been able to transfrom the game into a different gaming experience. If TESO fails, I honestly doubt it will be based exclusively on the use of the Hero Engine but because of their vision of what to do with the TES IP in the MMO genre. SWTOR could have been an entirely different game given a few different key creative decisions. |

Originally posted by Laughing-man When I make the statement "practically level a toon to max on a weekend" I am really being a little sarcastic. However, I do remember that with a full time job and two kids I was able to churn out max characters like it was a factory assembly line when I was playing. Point being, can you make an already easy game any easier? I doubt I could play this game anymore even if it went 100% F2P. |

So, I have recently been getting ALOT of WoW spam for the expansion beta, this and that. Just received one where I was asked to come back with a couple of perks. Once of which was: ""A single character boosted to level 80" This made me laugh. I had considered opening one of my accounts after years of cancelled time just as a pocket PvP MMO. However, free rides to 80? That killed any chance of me ever returning to WoW. From what I remember you could practically level a toon from creation to max on a weekend. Free ride to 80? Seriously? |

Trouble getting vanguard to run
General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 5/18/12 1:40:43 AM
For the game itself I think maybe you need to do a reinstall. Did you install from disc or from the online download/patcher? I tried installing from the disc I had from release and had issues with the launcher being able to get past a certain Launcher update from the past. After I used the patcher from the website and or account subscriptions tab it went smoothly. As for the billing issues, I would suggest contacting their S. Although SOE has a bad reputation, I have always had very positive resuts with SOE's CS regarding anything from billing, character transfer, lost items etc. Hope this helps. |

The character startup areas still exist. You choose at character select if you would prefer to start at the Isle of Dawn or your original racial start area. There are benefits to starting at the Isle of Dawn, gear and in particular the Bracelet of Lucky Charms which gives bonuses to all spheres and is upgradeable every 10 levels. At 20 or 30 it begins giving you an added experience bonus as well. |

When Is The Last Time An MMO Surprised You?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/14/12 3:26:37 PM
Just a couple months ago with Vanguard. I played it in Beta and hated it. I played it at release and hated it. Stopped back in a couple times over the years and still hated. My biggest issues were the poor performance, glitches and bugs. Stopped back in again a couple of months ago and have not had an interest in logging into another game since. The game performs very well and the bugs that do remain are easily ignored. These are being worked on as it reches F2P as well. This ended up being the first game in a long time I have a riculously hard time logging off of. Its an MMO based on the older template like EQ1 and DAoC (which is what I prefer). Its a massive world where you would literally need to play multiple characters over an extended period of time and go well out of your way with each to see it all. In depth crafting system. Unique Diplomacy system I have never seen in any other game. After years of playing every release of hot garbage coming out looking for a new home the last thing I expected was to go back in time and find one. This is probably not one for the folks who require the flash bang effects of modern MMOs and need a hand held through each individual step of the game, but I am loving it. |

Yeah, I tried that. Im restricted to an Ipad at the moment and it doesnt seem to want to cooperate. Soon as I get to a real Comp I'll give that a try.
Thanks for the tip though.
EDIT: I got it...i think I was just fat fingering it. Thx again.

Originally posted by wrightstuf I do not think the graphics in this game are bad at all. In fact, Vanguard has some of the best scenery Ihave seen in any game. I play with maxed settings though. However, you cannot expect a game released in 2007 to be compeitive graphically with a game in 2012. From my experience, ultra modern graphics doesnt cover up "suck", so its a trade-off I suppose. |

Originally posted by Tortanic To be honest, I think the major thing F2P will accomplish is getting some of the older generation MMO enthisuasts into the game to try it. Most people just won't try Vanguard for a subscription fee with all the bad press and history of unplayability from Beta to release. Once they do I am pretty sure the type of player who likes the older template of MMO's will sub. The younger players who require the dazzle of the modern themepark and the requirement to have everything spelled out for them/handed to them will complain for a little while and leave. This game has a target market within the genre, but it most likely will not be for everyone. |

Glad you are enjoying the game, I second the opinion that if you are considering playing it jump in with both feet, you will be impressed by this game. It still needs a little work, but the game is very playable now. The game is now also receiving weekly maintenance and the dev teamm has requested players to post all 1-50 content bugs for some content overhauls that will be coming with the F2P patches. The game is beginning to get the attention it deserves and anyone who likes the older template of MMO's (EQ1, DAoC) will enjoy this game immensely. I really wish I would have found this one sooner and not wasted so much time on these newer MMOs. I played d@mn near every MMO that has come out since EQ1 and I have to say that since EQ1, nothing has grabbed my attention as much as Vanguard except possibly release WoW. Do it. |

Looking for a service, or an artist who is capable of creating quality forum signatures to order. I would do it myself but I would like better quality than I seem to be capable of creating. Please PM me if interested or have a recommendation. |
