So after seeing many posts about the new down scaling I decided to go research it my self to see just how much different it was and found some things that made me wonder even more if it was intended or was supposed to be there in the first place. Check out the link below to see the video I did on it.

Video Link : Guild Wars 2 Down Scaling

I hope you all have your own input for this and see you in game.

So, I finally watched your video. I see where you are coming from, but there's some good reasons why there is leveling in GW2. Additionally, I don't think your argument here is about downscaling, but rather your argument is about why is there leveling in GW2.

First, leveling is a familiar tool that's been used in gaming for decades now. Remember that ANet had to add in Hearts to lower level areas in order to get people to even participate in the events during early playtests. Just having the dynamic events going on around them wasn't enough to get them to do it, because "they didn't have a quest for it". Having a sense of progression is very meaningful to many people as well.

Second, levels are a good way to spread out the populations. If GW2 never had levels a good portion of the population might have just gone strait to Orr and just zerged their way through events for gold farming, gear farming (for salvaging) and the only people left in the rest of the world would be the explorers and crafters since there is a progression system to crafting based upon materials.

Third, levels are used to deliver trait points and skill points. Imagine if you had to go around and hit Hero Challenges all over the world on every single character you make? The leveling system in GW2 ensures that characters can be built via all of the activities available to us. Giving us all traits and skills at new character creation would be pointless since you're killing the initial progression system of leveling a toon. Hell, I have enough gold and resources in GW2 where if I made a new character in a non-leveling system, they would be 100% geared and built the second they were made. That would negate many of the reasons why we play these games, since you could essentially not play a character to level one. Granted, with enough Tomes of Knowledge you can do that now, but that does require some effort on your part.

I understand, I think, your premise. However, I really don't agree with it at all.

They would have been just fine IF you didn't have to get levels...

I asked "Why are there even levels?" during my 3 weeks of play near launch. I asked this around level 30. Then came "so there are levels but no point". This contributed to my overall feeling of pointlessness from Spvp to RvR to pve land. For it GW2 was just a bad game in so many respects.

I am not that far into ESO's PvP, but am going to chime in anyways.  It is nearly all large group combat, lying siege to keeps and defending enemy assaults.  You do not get many opportunities for small numbers fighting.  If you like the idea of defending and sieging, though, dive in.  I preferred GW2 as far as individuals making a difference in the large scale, but ESO does a better job at handling large groups because they do not cap AoE at 5 people.

For large scale PvP I think ESO will be your best bet right now.

For smaller scale PvP you are looking at a really weak playing field right now.  WoW may actually have superior class balance than its competition atm, but of course requires an initial gear grind and skilled friends to succeed.

GW2 is not balanced at all for smaller scale combat.  ESO does not seem to offer it.  FFXIV seems to offer it as a backseat to the rest of the game, and I have never met anyone that took it seriously rather than as just a way to have fun outside of the norm.  Rift last I played it actually had pretty solid PvP, but WoW offered better.  Same with SWTOR, but I do not know how active it is since I am not subscribed right now.

Two other things to note, if you would consider playing EVE, the game is a pvp strategist's dream come true.  It might take awhile for you to become well known enough to get a fleet to follow you, but it takes awhile to learn all the game offers as well.  Just realize going in that the game is about strategy, preparation, and planning.  Individual player skill has only a small part in the outcome of an engagement.  The last thing, since you are coming from a MOBA background, maybe SMITE would appeal to you.  It is a moba just with a behind the back third person camera instead of an isometric view.  It seems to be popular right now, but in my experience HiRez (the company behind it) makes genuinely enjoyable games, then cashes out right when you need them to start work on game balance.

Edit:  In HiRez's defense, the games they ditched were far past the point of being financially sustainable.  Unfortunately their earlier games did not get the number of players they needed, despite being (imo) pretty good games.

I actually come from an mmorpg background I most recently went to league because the player base fizzled out in gw1 but I loved the pvp in that game and unfortunately I don't think guild wars 2 is comparable in any way. Before that I was big in ultima online. I guess i'd say I am more into games that are more small group combat or even 1 v 1 ive never really gotten into any of the big seige games.

When I said I wish eso had more small scale pvp. What I meant is I wish there was arena or 1v1 hot join system. I play small group in ESO now. No more than 5 people ever. Most the time I play with two others. We cut travel lanes and take resources. We can be devastating when preventing the enemy faction from reinforcing keeps. I reached emperor playing like this on two different toons in two major campaigns.

There is plenty of room for small group play in ESO. Small groups can and are very impactful. Sometimes though like now when working with a new toon and build I just want to hop into a 1v1 or a 2v2 to work on things.

Wushu is a awesome pvp non quest centric mmorpg. So many brilliant pvp centric system. You'll scratch your head like "how/who thought of this!" It does have a pay to win element, but only at the very top 2% will it be felt. I played for 15-16 months. Here's a link to my youtube page.

I stopped playing Wushu and started playing ESO. ESO's skill system and build customization is unmatched. Couple that with the best graphics and life like combat system makes it really hard to beat. I wish there was some small scale pvp, but Cyrodiil will hold your attention for a long time. It's huge.

edit-thread is moving too fast. @Hellbound cool out a bit.

As I have mentioned before, no one here appears to have any clue as to how venture capital companies work.

EQN will not be released in 2020, no VC company would EVER pay for development that long.

EQN will not have a $100 mil price tag, for the same reason.

EQN will not be a full feature MMO, which would require several more years of development.

VC firms are worried about the return on investment this quarter or this year. All of that stuff I just mentioned are a bunch of naive hopes from people that do not understand how things work. VC firms are not in ANYTHING for the "long haul".

I suspect (although no one not on the inside can say for sure) that when the VC firm bought SOE, they gave them 1 year to get everything out the door or it would be getting canceled. That's the long and short of it, that's how VC firms operate.

As such, I think it is even money that EQN will either be canceled late this year, or a very much stripped down EQN will release  some time in first month or two of 2016 (and look something like Neverwinter).

Anything else is just not supported by what VC firms are, or how they run.

I'm actually intrigued by this. I think the MMO industry needs someone to light a fire under their butts; and make sure teams don't bite off more than they can chew. Make a smaller version of a game; and build upon its success gradually; rather than taking five years to build an enormous monstrosity or morph into vaporware.

Funny as MMOers we bitch when games get rushed and the games not polished and when a company takes their time to get it right we bitch they are going to slow lol. EQN could have just made the game years ago and put an EQ IP stamp on it and said there go play but they decided to go in the direction of an RD game and make something new and unique =-) Thats another area we bitch as MMOers. Sick of the same game being made with new skin, we call them WoW clones for some dumb reason. Again DGC is trying to make something new and what do the gamers do? We bitch. We cant even pick what side of the fence we are on.

Wait one second... SOE did in fact slap an EQN stamp on a game, released it for sale and told players to play that.  I'm not sure how you can overlook something like that and instead blame players for not being thrilled.

Not sure what game your talking about? Unless you mean Landmark? If you mean Landmark that game is nothing like EQN, one is a MMOrpg and the other is a building game. They made Landmark (devs words) because the tools they were using to make EQN were so much fun they wanted to put them in the players hands.

As Mendel said, SOE could have easily shut up about their project until they could actually get some concepts set or maybe even have a real idea of where the project is going and when it might possibly be done.  Yet that is not what they did and the backlash they are receiving is their own fault.

Haters gona hate, as my post above. Game takes to long gamers bitch. Game comes out to soon, gamers bitch. Game ends up being the top seller on steam, gamers bitch. Backlash is everywhere on the internet and IMO 90% its not worth reading and life goes on and games keep selling and most people have fun. Heck WoW the biggest MMO out there is still going strong and people cant stop bitching about that one as well. Landmark is doing fine and the game keeps getting developed and has an AWESOME in game community, one of the best I have seen in my 17 years of MMOing.

The short and sweet is that when companies over promise and under deliver there will be backlash.  Seems to fit this situation exactly.

That only happened in the mind of the few hardcore people that even take time to come to forums like these. Most people just wait for games to release and play them. When EQN and Landmark release as in done their beta process and if they are quality games at that time, people will play it. Backlash means little when most of the market for these games are not part of it.

The company can claim they have the luxury of taking their time to get things right, but clearly that time ran out at SOE and I doubt Daybreak is going to be any more generous.  The problem is they have already shown they are willing to release buggy, unfinished, boring game well before they get anything right.

Actions > words.

You call it released, the devs do not. You can keep calling them released but that only lowers your cred as you dont know what beta means. When a game is testing Alpha systems for another game, how you can call it anything but beta shows how little many know about game development. DGC is far from out of time. They build a good game, people will play it even if they HATE EQ or DGC. Why? Gamers are suckers for any quality game. Now we just need to wait and see if it will be =-) DGC has the skill to make the game the only question with so much RD will the systems come together to be the game people will play. So far I dont like the direction of combat at all. I hope they get the combat down right. From devs words lately, thats a big part of what they are doing now. So when they update Landmarks combat we will see if they are getting it right.

You still believe huh? You bought what dave sold(and was fired for) hook line and sinker. I believe what they did to sell Landmark was criminal (most likely was thus the name change), and that the guy who made WarZ was closer to delivering on his promises than SOE/DGC ever will be. A true shame.

edit- One more thing, no one will ever play Landmark, but the 300 die-hard fans the game has. They will keep buying it though, because DGC will keep selling and marketing it.

edit-Sorry... It just pisses me off everytime I think about what could have been with EQL:N. Then I start to think about it was never meant to be. Weeks of points and ideas in 50+ page threads about what pvp could be like. Remember "you will help us develop"? None of anything was taken into consideration at all.

All of this isn't set in stone plans nor is it actually been announced to be implemented at a planned time. This developer has let one of the more promising attempts at rvr post-Daoc fall to the curb and there is no coming back from it any longer. Not to mention many of the actual pvpers of ESO disagree with half or more of these "proposed changes". Some of the campaign ideas aren't bad, yet are ridiculously late if not too late. The removal of former emp passives just removes another feature of their game that many of the players of their game have worked extremely hard to achieve. I've played since launch and been emperor twice, each time it took days to weeks of hardcore pvping to pass rivals and accomplish crowning. If they consider it too easy, then make it harder don't remove another feature from the game. We're running out of pvp features already.

The vast majority of the pvp'ers who've stuck with this game over the past year and a half have given up, I know as I am one of them who is still around and I've seen them leave. There has been no new content since launch and there has been content removed and never re-implemented in these "internally being tested plans coming soon" bullshit responses Zenimax has been giving us for 6-9+ months.

The game is advertised as an rvr game hosting battles between hundreds of player. At launch, this could happen. There was hiccups and lag, but it could happen. Patch after patch it has gotten worse and the population caps in campaigns are now less than 1/3 of what they were at launch with 20-50x the lag.

The problem of lag that ESO pvpers have faced grows worse and worse with less and less people. Yet, as us players can clearly see ZOS is the culprit and cause of this lag they ask players to "spread out" or "reset your routers", horrible lack of accepting the blame and doing something about it. There was a time when hiring new personnel or upgrading server tech could of been a cost worthy idea on their end, now there isn't the population of pvpers to make it worth that expense anymore, gg ZOS.

Dude I think you are wrong. I too have been here from the start. Sure some people left, but isn't that natural? So many different names everyday.  Certainly more coming than going.

AOE is there to stop stupid zergs. Proper questions is: what about lag fix?  Getting total freeze every few seconds while in siege makes it unplayable at all.

Lag happens sporadically during a 2 hours window. Unfortunately it happens during prime time for a lot of people. Wheeler said they have isolated the root issue. It comes back to AoE. He went as far to say lag is nonexistent on the sub vet server because those player don't have access to a lot of the AoE that vets have.

It splits up to 60 targets with all targets outside of the closest 6 receiving less damage. AoE damage is still to high though. I was thinking about this last night in fact. I honestly believe that A0E could stand a 300% decrease across the board and still be effective.

Animation cancelling turned the pvp into a game of manipulating and exploiting poorly implemented mechanics instead of competitive play, kudos.

Complete l2p issue. ESO was designed for a player to be able to use a basic attack along with a skill or spell. Where as a game like Wushu was not designed for such which allowed the repeated use of some abilities with no animation at all.

ESO PvP was never designed to be competitive, and as a result of those initial design decisions it never will be.

If you want competitive PvP play a MOBA or an FPS.

Let me know what you think when 3 people wont let you 5 man casual group ride to the next keep. Killing you over and over while using perfectly selected emotes for one of ESOs 100s.

"The long-lasting problem of Emperor trading will also be addressed. Instead of the Emperor scoring a permanent set of buffs, these buffs will now only last for as long as the person is actively Emperor. Players will still get the skill line but this won't cost points to invest into any longer. Emperor swapping among alliances has been a big joke, trivializing the whole Emperor role. With the changes, it seems Emperor will indeed keep being minimized for the good of PvP on the whole. The concept was interesting and fun, but sometimes other players can just run something promising right into the ground."

This was an issue due to having to have X amount of servers in order for a person to be able to play a toon on all 3 faction in different campaigns. With everyone wanting to play on the same 1 or 2 servers this left some under populated servers in the early days of ESO. This is when "Emp trading".

Trading hasn't been an issue for nearly a year now. I can assure you getting Emp today is no joke. Prepare to put in many 18 hour days until you get it.

@gest Now way does anything go up faster by questing. That being said you get a lot of skill points from questing.

I collect shards in the zones I'm grinding. That gives me enough to do what I need by v14.
ESO of course. I leveled 2 toons just grinding mobs. It's the fastest way to level. Plus you can level all your skills that way.

Did you guys run a column, or didn't you comment in a thread saying that Anet said "We are not hiding anything we have shown all the features..."?

I thought the same thing. I remember reading that they have already released all the information regarding expansion features. However, this is the second time I have seen Bill make that same comment. Maybe he knows something we don't?

Here it is.

Jason Winter - "When I talked with Mike O'Brien and Colin Johansson at PAX South, right after the Heart of Thorns reveal, I asked specifically about dungeons and whether we'd be getting any of those in the expansion. Sure, they hadn't mentioned them, but maybe they were just... I don't know, something that was relatively pointless to bring up separately because it was just a thing that expansions do – of course they have to have new dungeons, right?

Even when I got the response of “we announced every major feature of Heart of Thorns today,” I still thought that maybe they didn't think dungeons “major” enough, but it's been long enough now that I think we would have heard about new dungeons if they were included. So, I'm about 99% sure there won't be any in Heart of Thorns. The questions I have are: Will there ever be new dungeons? And if there aren't, is that OK?"

I think the biggest issue isn't the news users/old users (though it does kind of bug me), but rather than we still don't know a lot about the content within.

Did you guys run a column, or didn't you comment in a thread saying that Anet said "We are not hiding anything we have shown all the features..."?

Wow misfire is the best I've heard to sum up the situation.

In the latest director's letter DGC has stated that they have halted work on Landmark in order to work on EQN you can find this letter on the Landmark forums.

I see a lot of misinformation in this thread. For one thing we don't yet know how many zones are coming. For another, we don't know how much content is in each zone. So saying the expansion doesn't have enough content, without actually hearing all the content is inaccurate.

I can sympathize with the core game being included in the boxed price, but most MMOs now do this on some level. No one is going to buy every expansion as time goes on. WoW realized it. EQ realized it. You need to remove barriers of entry to get new players in the game. I don't believe Anet is charging for it. They're simply doing what almost every other game is doing. Removing a barrier to entry.

That said, I think Anet has screwed up, by not giving enough information about the game before allowing people to preorder and by not including a character slot in the base version.

If you happen to be a Guild Wars 2 player that buys gems with any regularity, the Ultimate package is a very good deal.  If you happen not to be, the price seems a bit high to me. That said, I've bought it anyway. I've gotten too many hours from the original for my money to quibble.

Colin said you have heard about all the content though. He says they are not hiding anything.
