I felt the same. I was really surprised thinking "Wait, no way this is intended to find so much useful stuff in the tutorial zone." Even the enemies in CH can sometimes drop useful stuff like armor pieces. If you are really patient I think you could farm that zone for a while and then start in the first zone really well geared ;)

Excuse me, but what "defectors" are you talking about? Defector would mean, that all the players that play a race other than the three assigned to a particular alliance, have been conscripted soldiers of a different alliance before. And that's the issue: Nobody, no matter what alliance you pick, starts as a loyal soldier of a faction.

In case of the AD starter zone you even pretend at first to belong to the AD. So... unless they give you a specific background and tell you that you have always been a soldier for your faction, there won't be any defectors. Just a culturally and racially diverse population within a territory, that chooses to support one of the three ideologies.

I must admit I am still puzzled at their decision for having faction locks at all. What they should have done from the start was giving you the option to play through and explore any of the 3 alliance zones in PvE freely, setting the decision to join a faction aside until you feel ready and informed (like it is done in the single player games) and then after you have chosen your alliance as a matter of conviction (and not race or any other silly stuff), you are locked to that alliance whenever you enter the PvP portion of the game, aka Cyrodill.

Obviously I cannot go into more detail at the moment, but I ll just say that my bewilderment at their original design decision was even greater after having witnessed the way you get to be introduced to the alliances.

Now for the preorder bonus that gets rid of that race/faction lock, that is of course something that should not be tied to a preorder but rather be offered as a standard feature for everyone, because it will improve the enjoyment of the game by a lot when you dont have to worry about some silly artificial restrictiont hat does not even make sense in the game's own context.

Also, I wonder how they going to implement it. Have you pick your faction after race at character creation? Introduce a special dialogue near the end of tutorial that sets a flag? I am curious how this will turn out. And for the record: I really liked what I saw in the game.

This really makes me wonder... so we can create cross faction guilds, trade among each other, talk to each other regardless of faction, but... we cannot play together if it is not the same faction. Why not allow that too? Have special PvE instances for friend and guild groups where you can quest and RP together. Would add a lot to the game imo, and if they are already handling cross faction guilds like this, why not go all the way then.
Not angry, just disappointed. Surprised? Nah, not really. Such a little thing to add or allow, but I guess it's still too much to ask for.
Wasnt that Golem that destroyed the building a huge walking voxel structure? Just wondering, because I assumed that the golem too was made of voxels.

So apparantly mmorpg.com and its staff are only allowed to present hard facts, officially approved by the government and a few very vocal readers on this site. Right? Yeah, thought as much.

I for one am very happy that they talk about this upcoming game and give us their opinion about it, because - and that might surprise some of you- they share our passion for gaming and think its great to discuss it with other gamers. Of course I want to hear more facts about the game and its development, but as logn as that isn't available I enjoy reading articles like this. It's no different than sitting together with friends and talk about a promising game that is in development. We all don't know much if any facts about it, but we sure like to share our excitement with like minded people.

Seriously, the negativity here is rampant.

@patrick Looking forward to ehar more form you guys and about your game, definitely gonna give it a try when it comes out :)

Correct me if I am getting this wrong but...

They designed the game around 3 faction PvP and you cannot talk to enemy factions...

But you can join up to 5 guilds including guilds in other factions with alts and can communicate with that guild...

Please point out where I am getting this wrong...Please.

I think you understand correctly. If this turns out to be true, well...then there is indeed no reason whatsoever to have any restrictions on the PvE part of the game. When it comes to the RvR, let them keep their faction setup and no communication while in Cyrodill. But for the PvE portion of the game they should really go all the way then and allow for all races to group up together and being able to communicate with each other outside of guild chat.

Just found that on the Bethesda forum. It's from a new interview with a German magazine I think. Here is the link to the relevant forum post: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1462010-new-paul-sage-buffedde-interview/

What stood out for me is this:

It is possible to have a guilds with all three factions in there. You can join up to 5 different guilds. Your account is attached to your guilds. (So to me that means that if I'm an Ebonheart player and have my Ebonheart main guild and I create an Aldmeri Character I can still communicate with my guildmates. But that doesn't mean that you can just add someone from another faction though, they have to have a character from your faction in your guild first though).

So...if they gonna do something like this, they might as well allow cross faction grouping and communication in their PvE zones. I am all for faction locked RvR, but make it a choice independent from race selection :)

I am so looking forward to playing my Toreador...please let this game become real :)

I had the best time doing RP back in the days of UO. There was awesome RP to be had and what we did not RP InGame we carried over to the server forum, where the stories continued or created new events that were then played out in the game. I still look for an experience like that in the modern day MMOs, but the games don't have many supporting mechanics anymore that encourage RPing.

Nowadays I am already glad if the zones are designed well enough so that they create a good atmosphere, but beyond pretty graphics not much is there that would make you feel attached to the game and your character.

Ironically in a hacknslay game like the new Neverwinter there are more RP elements than usually found, mostly in the form of background diversity, deity worship selection and you can even reroll your stats at the start. It feels like this is the pinnacle of RP and we won't see much progress anytime soon.

Actually, going back to what was once put into these games for RPers would be considered progress compared to the standard now.

I usually play Imperials, so with that not available I'll probably play Khajiit. Then Argonian, then Redguard or Breton.

I am a pretty huge fan of deserts so I would really like to see Redguard territory and ofc Elseweyr.

Least interested I am in Cyrodill, but thats more because of an architectural preference and Cyrodill is medieval style which I ve seen a lot already :)

Also Blackmarsh would be pretty cool to see, not that I like swamps, but exploring it would be neat

Personally I am waiting for any news about the game as I think we have pretty much exhausted the discussion about why we like certain aspects of the game or why we do not. Whether I will play the game or not still depends on one thing though:

They either allow for an option to play, chat and group with any race (PvE only ofc)/make it so that at least witht he people on your friends list or guild you can group up without restrictions

or they keep their -imo unnecessary- restrictions on PvE and see how many people will buy/play the game regardless

An about this constant DAoC vs ES camp argument...just the last night I was having a nice talk with my friends. We talked about our great experiences within DAoC, watched some nostalgic DAoC videos and shared a lot of fond memories. Then we talked about ESO and lamented the fact that they had to bring a DAoC style mechanic with so many restrictions placed on PvE into a game world where it -imo- does not belong.

So this is kinda ironic. I am a huge DAoC fan and really want a DAoC 2. But I am not happy with what they did to ES even though it has all the DAoC features I loved.

It seems that players increasingly like to focus on one or two aspects of an MMO and, if expectations are not met, tend to brand the game a failure. But there's more to a game than one or two things, most importantly how "playable" it is. See what we have to say about this issue in our latest Elder Scrolls Online column before heading to the comments.

I define playability as “am I having fun in the moment?” When I log into the game what is there for me to do?  Many MMOs act as grindfests where you are repeating a process to reach a single goal. Is the process that you are repeating fun? Probably for a while, but it will soon become boring. Elder Scrolls has shown its quest system, its open world maps, and its ability to accomplish character goals through different ways. These three systems can take the grind out of leveling in the game. On their own they work well, but it is the balance of the three which allows you to have fun from moment to moment. If I log in any random night, I should be able to pick any one of these three options and play. If I am in the middle of a quest chain, they I can complete it. Or maybe I just want to explore the world tonight and not follow a quest. That choice for a player is very important and how a game like Elder Scrolls allows for players to make that choice is important to their success and retention.

Maybe it is just me, but I cannot quite agree with that viewpoint. For starters, quests and how you can complete them are still one single system or game mechanic. The different ways to approach a quest are just a feature of that quest mechanic not a different system on its own, at least imo. I mean, it's like saying: Well, today I will quest. But tomorrow I will approach the quest differently. It is still questing, and not offering a different option.

Then the open world maps. I suppose you could say that this is the exploration mechanic, and yes, that's something you could consider as a unqiue occupation aside from questing. I have another issue here: where exactly is the open world exploration possible?

Correct me if I am wrong but from what I read in various articles isn't it more like 5 zones each faction that you progress through depending on your character's level? You start in a starter zone, then have to complete certain main quests to be able to go to the next map/zone. Does it open up then? Can you freely explore the available 5 zones or do you get eaten alive if you step into a zone not suited for your level?

Maybe you have more insight about this than me, but I don't really see that open world happening, and that is even ignoring the fact that you can't enter the other 2/3rd of Tamriel until you are max level. What I see is that you can run around on the level appropriate map/zone and then progress to the next map once you reach a certain level. So, exploration is probably only happening within a particular map/zone, pretty much like GW2.

Ok, back to the point you made with "I define playability as “am I having fun in the moment?”". The three systems you mentioned are for me just one system, and that is called questing. When I think of different options that can distract from the grind a bit, I think of PvP, Crafting, RolePlaying. Those are different mechanics/systems and they offer some variety and also allow to have "fun in the moment".

I know to many that tend to take these MMOs as a solo experience and haven't built up ties or don't tend to play with friends or family that this can seem like a non issue. To guilds and those with family and friends that play together this is a hinderance. Not to all, but I don't think my guild, friends, and family are the only ones that find this to be an issue.

I got the same situation here with friends and family. Unlike many who saw the leaked footage I thought it wasn't so bad and I did get a certain ES vibe. I could see myself enjoying this, IF they give the option to play with others regardless of race choice.

What the OP was attempting to argue (along with everyone else, supposedly) was the merits or flaws in that decision.

In that argument, there are two stances:

01) I don't like faction lock. Because: (reasoning here), or

02) I like faction lock. Because: (reasoning here).

I agree, that is pretty much what most of the arguments come down to. It has evolved beyond that though. Now it is more of a

1) I don't like faction lock because of reason, and I would suggest to the devs to allow option XYZ so I too can have fun

versus

2) I like faction lock because of reason, and I feel threatened by the suggestions those who don't like faction lock are presenting here

Whether or not the suggestions are really bad for the game and its design is debatable, but I think this is what is happening right now.

Btw, what you wrote after what I quoted was unnecessary, unless you wanted to show how much of an internet forum veteran you are :)

From what I read on the official website about their PvP/Cyrodill alone I am already very excited and happy with that system. I think this is what most people here don't understand. You can wish for faction by choice and open world PvE and also like their PvP mechanics :)

And why cant Mario still be fixing pipes? Forget this side scrolling idea where he saves his girlfriend Peach. You know what lets rewind everything and go back to 8 bit graphics. Thats how TES started. Lets rewind WoW and have it only be a RTS. By your standard we would miss out on a lot of great games that started from something else.

What? So confused. WTB more logic.

Replying to what you said in red. Games grow and change and just because the single player game had it does not mean its needs to be in the MMO. Sure over all it needs to feel like TES. It must have story and lore to fit but Locked factions does not break this game. Just like any video game that started out as a RTS or a single player RPG. When it makes a jump into 3D or a MMO or any other medium. Its time for change to fit that. Just like a book made into a movie it cant keep all the same elements.

Except they could keep all the same elements and give you what you want at the same time, but they choose not to. Everyone could be happy here, they CHOOSE not to do it, not that it can't be done.

Thats what kills me from people on your side of this. You think you speak for all TES fans and you dont. I am a HUGE TES fan. Been playing them from the days of 8 Bit games. As a TES fan I LOVE this current design. At best if they remade the game there would be a different set of fans who would be happy and another set that would be upset.

Foodle just ignore them, you're not gonna change their mind because they have an agenda which is clear as hell.  We all know that there are millions of TES fans looking forward to ESO as evident by the Facebook likes (over a million) tons of positive feedback since the 1st press event in October, many more positive hype since Pax.  Not to mention the myriad of supportive and eager fans on very popular websites like TESOF and Tamriel Foundry  and the many Podcasts which get rave reviews.

Just trying to support the devs in what they have done. Want them to know there are some fans out here who love what they are doing. =-)

I can respect that, Nan. I am doing the very same, letting the devs know that I care about their game and like whatI've seen so far, except that I also point out what I don't like and how it would keep me from playing it. The others who feel like me are also giving suggestions how they think changes could be made that allow for more options and will in the end reach more fans of TES.

Dismissing them simply as fanatics, as having an evil agenda that shall destroy the game, etc. is easy.

Acknowledging that they have a different view on ESO and be done with it seems a lot harder, for some reason :)

if they had decided to make it a FPS featuring alien invasions with spaceships and place it in Tamriel, is it still Elder Scrolls? Just because the developers make it? I can't quite agree with that logic.

I dunno, WoW basically did just that for Burning Crusade and it worked out rather well for them. :)

I am really not good on WoW lore, but wasn't the Outlands where the Orcs and Draenei originated from? Don't really know if the spacegoats were already established lore or not.

You are right of course, we have to wait until release and maybe a year after that until we see how well their alterations to the lore and game will work out for them :)
