EA lays off 1000 - link inside
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 4/18/12 11:44:30 PM
It is a double edge sword. First, to the guy who had his sister layed off from Tims, might need to consult a lawyer, since that is a violation of Canadian TFW program on the surface (without having additional information).
Part of the reason we enjoy cheaper consumer goods is because there is outsourcing and cheap overseas labour. Do you shop at Walmart? Walmart is one of the largest importers of Chinese goods in the world. That is the reason you're able to buy that 10$ toaster and the american company that makes them went out of business 10 years ago. A business like Walmart has so much purchasing power it can set their pricepoint to suppliers (generally that has worked in reverse, following the standard rules of competition). However, when Walmart dictates to suppliers how much it will pay, the suppliers change their habits (outsourcing) to meet demands. And you don't say no to Walmart. Just look at what happened to rubbermaid, which was then acquired by Walmart. Now that was completely off topic. While I do think EA is a terrible company, outsourcing isn't exactly totally evil on their behalf. Part of the way capitalism works and how we can afford the materialistic lifestyle we do is off the backs of the poor around the world. Someone is always exploited for the benefit of others. Now that isn't |

It is also a mistake to assume random forum poster = dumb. This poster has probably logged more hours in SWTOR than 90% of the dev team. |

I do not like the 1.2 Patch [Mod Edit]

I thought PvP was bad before 1.2. Which is why I unsubbed. I'm amazed they actually made it worse. |

Isn't EA publishing TSW? I think I've seen this movie before.
We've already seen a prepurchase program announced in direct reaction to GW2 (which they made release a few days later) offering beta access for prepurchasers. Once GW2s release date is finalized, publisher EA will announce a very similar release date (possibly days before) when GW2 is supposed to be released. Weeks later, forums will be flooded with complaints, qqing, etc about bugs, bad mechanics and an unfinished product released too early. TSW subs will go the way of SWTORs. High spike and box sales, low retention. You can take this to the bank. |

Canceled My Sub (Another Whiney post)
Reviews & Impressions « Star Wars: The Old Republic 3/29/12 10:22:56 PM
lol @ the dude trying to be critical about the OP playing for 3 months. As a PvP player, you need to spend a significant amount of time leveling a character to endgame (since this is where the competitive PvP takes place, ok tanner?) this is where you can actually judge whether or not a game has the proper tools to be a solid PvP game. To actually master game mechanics a lot of players try out each different character once or at least spend some time researching it. 3 months isn't a long time either - not sure how much time the OP put in, but it takes almost an hour a night (90 or so hours) to get to endgame. Then you have to gear up in PvP, etc. It takes a while to make a judgement, hence why I finally cancelled my account after 2.5 months. But thanks for the input tanner, it was welcome. |

The New Innovative MMORPGs, are really MMOFPS
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/28/12 11:59:11 AM
I find it amusing that if they released something very similar to 'old UO' with a couple tweaks and graphics updates, it would be called innovative.
UO's Mage Combat was the ultimate blend of twitch, reaction and RPG style gameplay it was a game where skill could be measured in 1v1 duels, in some ways we are going back to it. |

Travel systems - which do you like the best?

UO runes could be sold and traded. Lots of people used that for their way to make in game coin.

Travel systems - which do you like the best?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/28/12 10:57:42 AM
I know a lot of people are not happy with instant travel systems - from my perspective and perhaps if you've played UO, it isn't that 'instant gratification' part at all. You still could explore the world - lots did and there were reasons to do that, but I thought the instant travel actually enhanced the community.
You could easily group up with friends - or help out friends if they were being attacked at some place. There were no ingame whispers or global chats so it wasn't as if you could bring a hellfire of people down on someone like other games. If your guild was in vent that was one way and really the other tool people used was icq. I mean it encouraged assisting and helping guildies and brought communities closer together I found. It also helped with the death system, since sometimes you might be wandering for hours unable to Rez with the lack of places to Rez. |

Travel systems - which do you like the best?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/27/12 9:51:05 PM
So I've had a fair amount of experience playing MMORPGs and had quite a bit of experience with the travel systems. Some of them are down right terrible, while others seem to enhance your playing experience. Best: UO - recall rune system. You could mark 'runes' almost any spot in the game and recall to it at any time (with the exception of dungeons year later). This system developed over time from having runes which you could lose when you die, to blessed runebooks which stayed with you. It allowed you to travel instantly to help friends and meet up with other groups of players for PvP fights and raids. Pretty Cool: Shadowbane - It had a portal system which allowed certain classes to "summon" you to a certain location (with cooldowns), but a large portion of the travel was actually walking / running from point to point, through a lot of open PvP warzones. Downright horrid: SWTOR / WoW - Rail to Rail on safe nodes. I remember 20 minute long griffin rides in WoW which you couldn't do a single thing except go AFK. One of the biggest reasons that I left the game as I really didn't appreciate the game "extending" your game artificially. So which do you think are the best?

Is mmorpg.com and some of the same kind of sites paid to overhype big budget MMOs

While I really do like how MMORPG took the time to make this video and Garrett is very enthusiatic about the video, it is quite apparent that Garrett does not have a lot of experience playing MMORPGs (especially PvP) at a very high level. There are tons of capable people who use this forum every day - plenty of whom are PvPers, they should be enlisted to help with the review of this content. While there are a lot of quality videos out there, my concern with this video in particular, it was very difficult to get a feeling of how "competitive PvP" actually was in the beta. |

WoW vs. SWTOR viability - the key stat is new players
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/25/12 12:30:24 PM
I can't really speak to his choice of server, but I know on my (now former) PvP server Daragon Trail (SWTOR), there was no where near close to those numbers and the Fleet population was rapidly decreasing. It would be extremely lucky to hit 100 people now on the Sith side (as opposed to 300+ 3 weeks post launch) during prime time. |

Minecraft, UO, Spore and the appeal of players to leave an impact on worlds
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/25/12 12:23:40 PM
Solid post by the OP - one thing that wasn't mentioned about UO was player housing an the ability to customize that. I knew tons of people who used to spend hours upon hours using the custom house builder tool. You could make some incredible deisgns (and awful ones too), or pick the basic designs and do whatever you liked. The concept of being an interior decorator really flourished with UO and it surprises me to no end how player housing has gone by the wayside in recent MMOs. It also gave you that little "impact" on the world you mentioned earlier and gave you your own unique little area. That in a way was the pure beauty of UO - there was no direction for years (no quests, no specific "goal", no "endgame") you just did whatever you wanted and found a like minded group of players to support that style. And I did love the combat in UO - I thought if they made some changes and tweaks everyone (PvP and PvM/PvE) could co-exist. |

Here is the one I chose:
But seriously, you're right. I don't understand how on earth you can think this game is too difficult. You have to screw up (and badly) in order to die or be using gear that is 10-15 levels below - as mentioned in another thread, I died a total of 4 times on my way to level 50 and most of it was done solo (not counting WZs). Easiest MMO that I have played.

He doesn't even acknowledge the complete failure of the game engine to support more than 30 people on the same screen without the game crippling to 1-3 FPS. Ilum is now 100% garbage all the tme. Gabe does not know what he is doing. This just highlights it. |

Nope, not at all, read exactly what was being quoted: Star Wars, this is an area that I think has got a lot of people anxious. I've heard from investors today saying that we must have 800,000 subscribers. I heard 600,000 yesterday. So what I think a lot of people have misunderstood is we said we had 1.7 million subscribers on the last call, which was about a month ago. What that was about was the fact that only about – just about half that number had triggered through their 30-day point and become active subscribers, our definition of recurring subscribers. So, to repeat, of those 1.7 in Feb, most resubbed at some point in time. So for example, if 75% of those subbed got charged at some point on their CC, it says nothing about the retention rates of those subs. So if 50% of those that were once charged cancelled, we could see sub numbers around the 600-700k mark CURRENTLY. That is the only comment he made. Be very careful with langauge. |

They do act for the shareholders, must be why their stock is taking such a beating as even they don't even agree with the direction of the company.
