It's a good idea and all, but I'm pretty much done with quests. Most people just plow through them without reading, so the entire quest system needs to be replaced with something more entertaining and fun.

Star Wars Galaxies was better.

Hmm. Let me try to choose my words carefully. SWG seemed like it was made for adults, whereas SWTOR felt like it was made for 6th-9th graders.

SWG was deeper in almost every aspect, e.g., exploration, crafting, economy, world size, social environment. SWTOR, however, was deeper via story & lore.

SWTOR felt like I was watching a movie. SWG felt like I was making a movie.

Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided Vs. Star Wars: The Old Republic

Which did you enjoy the most and why?

No. We won't. Not an AAA American game, anyway.

Star Wars Galaxies' crafting system should be the minimum of all crafting. However, it's more about the dollar now than it is about creating a good game. MMO depth, complexity, and innovation is devolving while marketing ploys and bs gimics are evolving. It's garbage.

The Elder Scrolls Online is not going to be any different. I don't know why some of you are so hyped up. Been there, done that.

In Star Wars Galaxies, I could make the fireworks. In Star Wars: The Old Republic, I just watch them.

It's very important to me.

EverQuest II did the best with their music system. They gave their players a /music folder within the EQ2 directory. The music folder had several other folders labeled by each zone. If you wanted to hear a certain song when entering "The Commonlands", you simply put whatever .mp3 into "The Commonlands" folder. This is so much better than changing tracks on the fly via player.

Star Wars Galaxies' crafting system should be the minimum of modern-game crafting. It's too bad that the genre decided to devolve on crafting. Come think of it, it's devolved on just about everything, e.g., exploration, freedom, social realm, community.
You're really not a MMO player. If you want competitive e-sports, then go and play Quake Live 1v1, Counter-Strike, or Call of Duty. Competition Area MMO is and will always be a complete joke.

Never going to happen. Why? It's not good for business/marketing. Most people want that badge that says "I'm Special" as exclusive as possible.

So. Not getting that isn't going to stop someone from playing the game.

From what I've read, TESO isn't that much different from SWTOR. I won't be surprised if it ends up being another post-WoW disappointment.

I'd have to disagree with you on purchasing editions other than standard edition and on closed betas.

If I'm going to spend the money to genuinely support a company and it's product, I would like to show for it. Hell, if it's something as simple as cosmetic I'll enjoy it. It just shows that I'm dedicated to the game.

It's difficult with closed betas. Depending on the size of closed beta and the actual exclusiveness of it, the reward may vary. However, if I actually use closed beta to improve the game via bug reporting/feedback/suggestions, then I'd like something to show that I helped shape the game. As well as being part of a dedicated, core group of people that had access to said beta. Again, even if it's a cosmetic reward.

I do agree on all your other points though.

Beta Rewards are actually the worst, IMO. The reward should just be the opportunity to the play the beta. Almost anyone would enjoy to participate in a Closed Beta. The only problem is being picked from the mass of players. It's not fair to other people who registered and did not get picked. So ultimately, obtaining a Closed Beta reward is like winning some community lottery.

What are Exclusive Items? Exclusive Items, within the MMO genre, are items that are generally received outside of the game:

  1. Rare Item obtained for Pre-Ordering.
  2. Rare Item obtained for purchasing the Collector's Edition.
  3. Rare Item obtained via Cross-Promotion (Purchase Razer NAGA Mouse and get Exclusive Green Crystal for SWTOR).
  4. Rare Item obtained because you attended a convention.
  5. Rare Item obtained because you registered on the forums before a certain date.
  6. Rare Item obtained because you made it into Closed Beta.
  7. Rare Item obtained because you followed their development via facebook and twitter.
  8. Rare Item obtained because you won some screenshot contest.
If a player wants to be able to "show off" some rare in-game item, cape, or title, then that player should have to earn it in the game itself. I remember attending a Warhammer Online convention (It was down the street). Because I showed up, I was given a code that allowed me to turn my character into a humanoid rat. After applying the code to my account and testing it in town, my message beeper started to sound like a machine gun, e.g., "'Where did you get that?', 'How?', 'What class?', 'What quest did you have to do?'" They were all upset when I told them that it was an "exclusive" reward.
All items obtained earned in game should be obtained through in-game effort.

I can't blame Blizzard, but my account was hacked a while back, but luckily I had my account set up with the mobile alert, and it sent me a text that my pw had changed...I got on the phone asap with blizzard and it was rectified.  I now use a much more complex password that is unique to my and I got the FREE mobile authenticator.  No problems since :)

I've always been pretty strict when it comes to security.  I'm probably the only person in the world that has cookies and stuff turned off except for "trusted sites".  I don't even click on links in my e-mail, even if it's a password reset or something that I requested or something like that.  Nothing is ever 100% secure though.

Edit: And I never ever ever keep my credit card active on any account.  I'll pay for something, then right after delete the card off my account...However, for some reason lately, alot of games won't let you play without a stored credit card...which is stupid.

I'm glad you got your stuff back.

I, however, don't have a "Smart Phone". Purchasing an authenticator...   I guess I just put it off for too long.

I wouldn't be talking about any of this had blizzard not called me a "gold / item duper". I just feel like they simply glanced at the account for half a second and treated it like a grain of salt.

In a single-player game, you can do that.  But how do you do it in an MMORPG?  Make everyone download 1 MB or so of textures every time a new player enters the screen?  Make it procedurally generated, in which case, you'll considerably restrict what players can do?

And let's not forget that using the same textures for a bunch of different players is a huge performance optimization.  When you only have a few players on the screen at a time, that doesn't really matter.  But if you want to go raiding or have large, crowded cities, being able to use a lot of textures for multiple players makes a major difference in frame rates.  That won't matter to people with higher end video cards, but if you want to make the game playable on lower end hardware, it helps a ton.

The game above is All Points Bulletin. It's an MMO and works on the fly. Everything you have just said is void.

It's not that it's impossible.  It's that there are always trade-offs.  I haven't played APB, so I'm not sure what trade-offs they chose.  But given how fast the game shut down, I'd say it didn't work very well for them.

The game wasn't shut down for its character creation. In fact, the character creation system is probably the sole reason why people play today. There are more people in the social district than in the combat realm.

Hey all,

Well... I've received my first ban in my history of gaming.

I started gaming via Hero's Quest: Quest for Glory / King's Quest / Police Quest all the way to EverQuest / SWG all the way to SWTOR (meh) / Diablo 3.

My account was stolen.

It's unfortunate that people do this, as I had a lot of time invested into that game. However, I had a simple password with virtually zero security. I never bothered to purchase an authenticator or update my password from time to time. So I was pretty naive (It won't happen to me).

Anyways, I find that I cannot log into my account. I cannot log into my associated email account (luckily it was only an email I used for games and such). I call up tech support and tell them situation.

They give me my account back. They transferred my account to a new email I had created (because old one was stolen). However, my character had no items and no gold. So naturally I would be upset. They told me to submit a ticket and I would be granted some type of "rollback" so that I could obtain most of my items again.

I submit a ticket and wait about a day.

I get an email this morning: "Greetings,

After a thorough investigation of your recently reported compromise, it has come to our attention that your ticket was submitted in an attempt to defraud the Game Master Department in order to duplicate gold or other assets. As a result, the Diablo III license attached to this Account has been permanently closed.

This action was taken in keeping with our Diablo III End User License Agreement ( and will neither be amended nor removed.

Blizzard Entertainment
Customer Support

First off, my best character probably had a financial value of about 20 bucks. I had very little gold on him. However, I was proud of my character because everything on him was 100% pure and legit. I never purchased, sold, or used anything from the Real Money AH. Everything was earned. Moreover, it was an $80 Collector's Edition account.

So the next thing I do is call up Blizzard support... again. I asked them about the outcome. They say they can't do anything but push another ticket. I asked him why they couldn't just check the IP logs or trade-screen logs associated with the theft. They said that is doesn't work the same way as it does in WoW. They don't have IP or data logs via trading, so they can't possibly track the person who logged into my account and traded/sold my stuff away.

Again, it was my fault for such low security. But wow! I didn't know that Blizzard support was so... narrow. I never joined any type of "secret" website or used any 3rd party software etc. So all of this is rather shocking. But being called a "gold duper" really ticked me off.

more than

No game will be as popular as WoW was at its peak.

WoW was more than just a Theme Park MMO. It was like a popular hair style that spread like wild fire. It spread throughout every Middle School and High School. Nerds played it. Jocks played it. Chicks played it. Business people played it. Ghetto people played it. It ran on just about every machine out there.

Someone could honestly create the most deep and fantastic MMO ever created. It will still not hold the numbers like WoW did.

I'd rather see non-story / non-personal quests.

I don't like having to kill goblins in order to find Grandma's ring. I don't like choosing between Heavy Boots or Medium Boots as a reward.

I personally would rather experience gigantic faction quests that eveyrone works toward. For example, The Qeynos Empire needs to fulfill the following city quotas:

  • Qeynos needs 10 tons of meat to feed its people throughout the winter. Qeynos will offer 10 silver per pound (get meat from killing animals in the wild).
I don't know... quests like the above. Lore in a game is fine. But when my character is "part of the lore" is just cheesy. If I want to be special throughout the community, I want to earn it by being able to craft the best goods or being known as a very good enemy player killer.

Tera - Played the beta. Thought it was cool at first. However, after doing the typical quest hub to quest hub, I decided against it. Did not purchase.

Aion - Same thing as above. Did not purchase.

SWTOR - Played the beta. I knew it lacked so much to even be considered a MMO. However, I still purchased it simply due to the fact that it was Star Wars (wishful thinking).

Star Trek Online - I'm so glad I got to experience the beta. I was ready to purchase this game. After playing it via beta, I dodged a bullet. Did not purchase.

I can't even tell you how many games in beta-mode I've tested. From what I've experienced, what you see in beta is what you generally get at launch. That's not always the case, though.

Has a beta ever changed your mind about wether or not to purchase the official game? Which ones?
