I never thought about the switching skills before leveling trick. Pretty near.
If you liked SWG and EQ2, you will certainly like this game.

So yeah I come here to get the latest news on MMO's which I think I am burnt out from playing. I come here to get hyped up for new MMO releases. I bought into the ESO hype, played it for 2 weeks and now I am back here looking for the next big MMO. Iv'e played WildStar beta and Im not really getting into it but will try it again this weekend.  I was sooo hyped for SWTOR and actually played it for like 6 months. It was ok but got boring.

The next big one is ArcheAge but Asian style graphics are turning me off, plus only 4 races to choose from. I like a game where there are plenty of races and classes to choose from. I dont see any big MMO on the horizon, so this has me waiting for WoD.

Dude, I'm telling you...

I've played every major MMO out there. I'm so sick of it all. SWTOR, IMO, was the biggest upset in MMO history. However, ArcheAge is a breath of fresh air, e.g., gigantic world, world housing, world pvp, exploration, etc.

Other than Character Creation (which is being westernized), the game itself does not feel Asian. It feels like a cross between SWG and EQ2. It's fun! The graphics are stunning and the performance is even better.

Here is an example of something I did earlier today in AA:

I was exploring the mountains - trying to find a location for a house. A member of the opposing faction must have sailed across the ocean onto my continent, as he became aggressive towards me. The world is big that I was shocked to see an enemy where I was at. He was much high level, so I had to use my head. I retreated to the cliff side. He followed me... swinging his monster sword. I ran around him and punted him off the side of the cliff.

I had to use the environment to improvise. This randomness was so exciting. It something that can't be felt in battlegrounds or dedicated pvp areas. ArcheAge feels like a real virtual MMO.

Everyone here has been conned into accepting these single-player co'op RPGs as MMOs. ArcheAge brings back the "old".

I was so excited for this game. However, my hype completely vanished after playing ArcheAge. AA seems to have everything that I've been looking for in a MMO.

If I'm going to be excited for EQN, it's going to have to bring the largest MMO world ever created, where players can plop down their own cities anywhere and everywhere etc.

$500,000,000?

This has got to be a joke. There is no way game development should cost that much.

There are countless individuals and artists that are capable and willing to work for peanuts. Terrible spending.

It's a free game. It's free to play. You're upset on having to spend 3 dollars to update your armor once?

I played the beta a few months before launch. I certainly haven't played it enough to render a valid opinion.

I will say this, though. I was so bored that I didn't even make it to the first starting city. Moreover, knowing that this game offers a linear path with a dedicated area for lack-luster end-game PvP brought no incentive to "stick with it".

I'm done with those types of games.

I know that this sounds extremely sassy, but I've always wondered why video game developers don't push to create Anti-Cheating / Anti-Botting (Farming) laws - federal or state laws that will fine the cheater or botter.

Enough botters can destroy a virtual economy. This makes it very hard for a casual or legit gamer to get ahead in the marketplace. The same concept applies to cheaters (speed hacks / aimbots). It turns many people away - forcing many to quit. The worst I've ever seen cheating was in MW3. I experienced a different cheater 7 games in a row. I'm not talking about suspicion, but am talking about a blatant cheating (80-100 headshot kills within 5 minutes - snapping kill-cam proof - auto text that the cheater was spamming, e.g., "HAHAHAH OWNED - BUY OUR CHEAT AT www.*********.com" etc.

I ended up quitting. Shortly after, CoD was offering to sell some map-pack add-ons. I remember saying, "yeah right...  so I can play with more cheaters?" Thus, they didn't get any of my money because of cheating.

I know that these are just games to us, but it's much more to the staff and developers. They need people playing / buying their games, else they won't be able to pay the bills. So since botting and cheating can put a dent in potential earnings, shouldn't they push for new laws that punish the cheater or owner of the Internet connection line?

ArcheAge is a very nice game. Unlike virtually every other modern MMO, it feels like it was made for adults. There is some complexity within AA that brings back the SWG-like smile.

Founder Packs generally piss off role players. Role players are the ones who get very angry when exclusive content is offered for such a price.

AA's top-tier pack ($150) isn't as bad as many people think. The goods within that pack are priced to reflect their future cash shop. You will end up spending that much in the game anyways. The difference is that instead of spending it little by little, you just get it all out of the way at the start.

I'll probably get flamed, but this is what I use beta invites for:

  • Learning the game so that I can fly through the content at launch. This is important. It's the best way to create the most potent pvp build, become the first and most well known crafter, to get the best housing plots, etc/
  • To write and test afk macros etc before launch.
  • To demo the game and see whether or not it's worth buying.

Composing:

Most people don't know that you can do this in ArcheAge. It's one of those "little" features that brings so much to the Social Realm.

ArcheAge: Player playing "Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCAmfYALOhg

How to compose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewD7aC4OIm8

From what I've seen, they have all sorts of instruments, e.g., pianos, lutes, guitars, drums, etc.

Yo!

I've always wanted to learn how to play drums. While I'm still a n00b, I'm starting to sound decent. I have a problem with keeping time. If Neil Peart was a level 50, I would probably be a level 4.

Since drums are so loud, I ended up converting my small Sonor Safari kit into an acoustic-conversion kit. I can finally start practicing without irritating the wife!

WoW was just better then EQ2 - I played both at launch and WoW was just miles ahead. About the only advantage of EQ2 was the voicing.  But the quality of voice acting was way below both SWTOR and ESO. EQ2 was decent back in the day but SOE can't hang with the big guys..They don't spend enough money and don't have the talent.

EQ2 seemed more geared towards adults. WoW, IMO, is just too "safe", e.g., all the battleground crap etc.

"Full circle"? Where do you think we've been in between? I would say we haven't moved much/at all.

I've always wondered...

How do you pronounce your name? I can't help but to chuckle to myself every time I see you post...   seeing the avatar of that smoothly shaved knight with a name that seems to start with "queer".

Is it pronounced, "Queer Hid"?

Want it now.

I don't get why it costs so much to make these games - especially since most of them are developed on an engine that is already created, e.g., unreal engine etc.

Curt Schilling...   all those millions invested in a game that wasn't even close to being completed.

It's out of control.

There are countless programmers and artists that are yearning to work or be part of a promising project.

does Eldevin fit the bill ?

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/857

The idea is close. Looking for more Diablo-like combat, though.

I'd really enjoy a Star Wars version of Diablo. It wouldn't even have to be a full blown MMO.

Most top-view hack-n-slash games offer the same experience: small maps with a tiny player cap (4-8). However, due to the master server being able to save experience and items for trading purposes, it gives the appearance of being MMO-like.

Why is there no top-view hack-n-slash game that plays more like a real MMORPG, e.g., gigantic worlds, world housing, player cities, mounts, deep crafting, etc? The closest thing I experienced to this was Mythos - a game I had tested years ago before it was ultimately shut down. While the characters of Mythos were underwhelming, the world and ability to play with hundreds at the same time was really neat.

You're about a decade late to that party bud.

Many of the early MMOs started out that way. Check out games like:

Ultima Online

Runescape

Ragnarok Online

Helbreath

Redmoon

There are others but I'm not sure which ones are still online or not. Most are very old. There are a few more recent ones, like Drakensang Online, but not many.

There were quite a few MMOs like what you are describing. However, as graphics evolved, so did MMOs, and most people aren't willing to put up with the dated graphics & control style anymore.

I don't think that the games you listed above are hack-n-slash, though.

Probably what most people do:

Anticipate the next "big" MMO and spend years thinking / following it...  only to end up hating it on release.
