[Editorial] The Secret World: Musing on Funcom
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/29/12 7:55:17 AM
The problem is the theme and setting. Most people just don't like Modern World MMOs, Post-Apocalyptic MMOs, and Sci-Fi MMOs (Unless it's Star Wars). It's because of this that I paid no real interest in The Secret World. I know wer're all tired of them, but the Sword & Board / High Fantasy is where the appeal is. People want longswords, two-handed claymores, broad swords, short swords, katanas, recurve bows, reflex bows, pikes, halberds, partisans, tower shields, magical staffs, daggers, plate mail armor, leather armor, etc... Many just aren't into wearing jeans wielding shotguns in their MMOs. |

Diablo creator speaks out...has Blizzard arrogance reached new heights?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/24/12 7:20:13 AM
The problem is that when Diablo 2 was released, it was ahead of its time. Diablo 3 was not. Instead, Diablo 3 was a sloppy model of Diablo 2...but with more linear story and class progression.
To be perfectly honest, Diablo 3 has been fatastic after their latest patch. The "leet" folks ar enot upset because their once "sick gear" is now just decent. |

[Editorial] General: Modern PVP Sucks and Here's Why
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/21/12 10:25:12 AM
Modern PvP sucks because it's virtual socialism. Battlegrounds? There is no element of surprise. The obvious strats are learned by all within a month. Everything becomes a redundant rinse and repeat borefest. It doesn't feel "massively multiplayer" or "heroic". Battlegrounds, Arenas, and Warzones all feel like an extremely sloppy Counter-Strike - small Online games that mean nothing. I can understand the need for Battlegrounds on PvE Servers, as PvE players should have a choice. The problem comes when they stick that stuff on PvP Servers. Most would not play them if it wasn't for their gear-driven incentive. If the didn't offer rewards for playing Warsong Gulch 10,000 times, people would stop playing them after day 2.
World PvP is the future. However, World PvP has never been done correctly. It has never had proper sanctions to protect lowbies from high-levelers. There has never really been an ultimate goal. All we've been given is the option to attack the opposing faction. It has always been extremely half-assed. |

Diablo 3: Downtime Paves Way for 1.0.4 Patch
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/21/12 10:16:34 AM
I've been playing Diablo 3 since launch.
These patch notes address most major issues as far as I'm concerned. I've been anticipating this patch for a long time. Can't wait. |

Bioware "Some players want day-one DLC"
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/20/12 8:52:00 AM
Idiot devs.
This is why they ALSO NEED Player-Driven and Created Content. These devs just don't get it. None of them do. You need both content and player-driven content. SPORPGs are not going to cut it anymore. Everyone has been there and done that with WoW & EQ. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: A Sneak Peek Into the Future
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/17/12 10:35:05 AM
They still just don't get it.
They continue to create content that will be redundant. This is like an adding in another battleground. How many times can people play the same garbage without wanted to hurl. Almost eveyrone has done that in WoW and will tire of it in any game post-WoW.
People cry for player-driven content or at least some meaningful social abilities, e.g., creating a few blank planets for player-made cities and rival cities etc. |

Runescape: Fordham Student Allegedly Robbed of Game Currency
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/13/12 1:41:08 PM
People seem to forget that the punishment for counterfeit money used to be death - even in the USA. I can see some hot shot lawyer deflating the seriousness of a BB gun. But counterfeir is absolutely no joke. That is a SERIOUS offense. It's serious because if people can't trust their own country's money, then everything goes to hell. That's why even some counties today kill for counterfeit crimes.
Years ago I had sold a computer on craigslist. We had agreed on $1200. We met, made the exchange, and departed. I found out later that the money he had given me was all counterfeit. The money looked and felt so real. However, because I used to live in my own little "everyone is sweet and kind" bubble, I didn't even question the honor of this guy. Losing that money sucked. But what sucked even more was that I had lost my safety. This guy had my name and phone #. It's not too hard to find out where I live etc. Secret Service contacted me and took my report. Haven't heard anything since.
I don't want to see anyone go to jail. But I'm sick and tired of assholes like this taking over. They have no idea what kind of havoc they create. Luckily the money from my PC was going to be used for PC upgrades. But what if I or someone needed that money to pay their mortgage?
I remember my wife crying...scared. |

ArcheAge: CBT5 Video Shows Off Character Customization

I honestly can't wait for this game.
Asian games have always had a fantastic female character design system. The males, however, need to be more westernized or rugged. Too pretty-boyish. This is just my opinion, though. |

WildStar: Social Systems Detailed
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/09/12 10:31:05 AM
social realms are extremely important. however, it's all worthless if it doesn't bring any type of muscle or benefit to the core game. Having a Player House is fine. Having a Player House that you and a few friends can turn into a popular shopping mall for adventures is fantastic. |

PvP SUCKS because it's boring. PVP SUCKS because of WoW's precedent Battleground system and it's viral infection to other MMOs.
Redundant Warzones? I thought this was a MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER game. There is nothing MASSIVE about small Counter-Strike-sized games. PvP Gear = Stupidest idea I've ever heard. Battlegrounds are so boring that they need to provide this kind of incentive for people to play them. It's a lazy way to avoid having to actually knuckle down and do some real coding for meaning world pvp with proper sanctions to protect lowbies from max levelers. PvP Sucks because it's almost always virtual socialism. Everything must be equal! Blah Blah. If I spend an entire month raiding for good gear and increasing my player skill, I should be able to bash the hell out of some weekend warrior.

The biggest gripe about modern mmos is the lack of sustain.
Diablo 2 launched in 2000. Until a few months ago, the game still costed a whopping 40 bucks. That's impressive for such an old game. Moreover, it's population has always been strong. Diablo 3 launched a few months ago. Most players beat it within the first few days. Even with all of its problems and complaints, endless consumers still play the game - even after beating it time and time again.
Now why are people still playing Diablo 2 & 3? Simple. They have the best itemization any game has ever seen. The items within the Diablo Series are like snowflakes. It is extremely unlikely that you will ever see two of the same item. This drives players to play endlessly for good gear. Trading and Bartering in the Diablo Series is a game itself. It's much more involved when compared to searching for "Sword of Justice" or "Gunther's Bane". With the Diablo Series, there is always a possible upgrade. Moreover, it puts an end to all of the end-game character clones.
This style of loot can be done with a true MMO. Other than player-driven content, it's the best possible sustain. |

Star Trek: Infinite Space: Gameforge Cancels Upcoming Title
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/08/12 9:59:37 AM
Game development has simply gotten out of hand. It's way too damn expensive now. 100 million to create the APB? The 200+ to create SWTOR?
People who play PC games these days don't need a boxed copy or cd. Downloading the game is the future. So that saves bundles of cash right there. Story / Quest Writers? Dime a dozen. You can these cheap - almost free. Anyone with a high school diploma can whip up some interesting story via imagination. Coders and Graphic Artists? There are endless pools of these guys out there. ENDLESS. Concept Artists? You can go to deviantart.com and find some of the most breath-taking artists that will work for very little. Marketing? A superior and innovative product doesn't need much of it. A simple booth at E3, YouTube video, or even some news coverage at sites like this is all they need. If a game is good, people will hear about it and play it.

ArcheAge: Closed Beta 5 Trailer

I really hope this sets a new precedent in the MMO realm. It would be nice to see clones of the SandPark vs the Redundant ThemePark.
Excellent video. The 0:37 Old Navy Swim Suit is a little lame, but no big deal. I'll run around wearing a rubber dog turd if it gets me away from the countless WoW clones. |

Controlling a team instead of a single character
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/03/12 12:36:12 PM
It would be unique, but it's just not for me. I like the attachment feeling to my character. I can't have that with 3 or more of them.
I'm not asking for a sandbox, but we just need a game that has endless tools of player driven content, e.g., player housing, cities, rivals, etc. The only time we see tools like this are in hardcore sandbox games like Darkfall and Mortal Online - so hardcore to the point where it's boring for most. I want a blend of WoW and SWG. |
