My SWTOR thread posted during beta testing
Reviews & Impressions « Star Wars: The Old Republic 2/26/13 7:49:37 AM
I followed the game since Oct. 08. I had a few thousand different posts about the importance of "additional & optional" player-driven content, the importance of deep crafting and world pvp, and the importance of social profession and how they make the world feel much more "alive". 5-10,000 total replies from the other posters, e.g., "Go back to SWG...oh! Wait! You can't!", "This is not a sandbox", "We don't need social tools.", "This game will do fine without all your mentioned trash."

[Column] Elder Scrolls Online: Voice and Choice
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/26/13 7:40:42 AM
"Moral Choices". Comeon, guys! It amazes me how easily people fall for this kind of stuff. The exact same thing was said about SWTOR. There is always going to be a choice among the "moral" selection that will offer your character a better reward, item stat or faction point. What does VO really mean? It means that we will all be following the same "legacy" storyline and that our characters will speak for us.

Does it bother you to see someone with an "exclusive" item via cross-promotion, pre-order, etc?

General: The Rant #2 - Previews, Press, and the Players
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/25/13 10:40:34 AM
The background of almost every single trailer or screenshot is the same: an endless vista of land. Most everyone wants to imagine what is out there, e.g., empty land for my guild's future empire, a place to plop my very first home, a place to "get lost", etc. The actual game is released. The cool vista background? Yup. It's just that... a background. I am hindered by mountains and invisible walls. I am told to stay on the main path and continue my quest line. The same concept goes for PvP. In SWTOR's Hope Trailer, you see a gigantic Imperial Army that is marching. However, it is ambushed by the Republic! How shocking and heroic! What an element of surprise! The game launches... there is literally zero element of surprise. Instanced Warzones / Dedicated PvP area is all there is. People are expecting PvP. Strategies are learned within the first month and every game becomes a rinse/repeat cycle. Moreover, Huttball? Trailers and demos are nothing but lies. This is why I'm a fan of ArcheAge. While it does have the same "fluff" trailers, it's no-nda policy provides endless YouTube videos so that we can see what the gameplay will really be like. If a game does not do this, it will most likely be a bad game. |

Whats your main reason for playing a MMO game?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 2/25/13 10:27:32 AM
I can't possibly choose only one, as there are several factors that come into play. #1. World PvP - I will not play a game that is polluted with dedicated pvp areas or instanced pvp. #2. Freedom and real exploration - I will not a play a game where the world sizes are only a few hundred meters off the main path, e.g., surrounded by invisible walls or mountains. #3. I will not play a game that is purely story driven, e.g., SWTOR. Story is fine, but don't make me, as well as a million others, to be this special little snowflake in the universe. |

Linear story, instanced or dedicated pvp areas, cut-scenes.

Here's an example that I honestly experienced:
A few weeks before Warhammer Online launched, I had attended one of their pre-launch conventions. I lived fairly close, was interested in the game, and knew that any extra codes could be sold via eBay. I attended. I talked to one of the developers (the one handing out an endless supply codes). I asked him for more. He gave me a handfull! I claimed one of the codes for myself. I sold the rest on eBay for around $300 per code. They sold within hours.
The game launches. The code that I was given gave me the ability to turn my character into some type of humanoid rat (pretty heavy with the WAR lore - Skaven). I did this. While I was walking around town, I had gotten bombarded with messages, e.g., "How the heck did you do that?!?", "What?!?", "What quest gives you the rat?!?", "Interested in selling!??" Most of them were upset when I had told them that the only way to obtain this was to attend a pre-release convention.
Moreover, this has nothing to do with socialism or whatever else most people are crying about. If you want a cool item, then go and earn it in the game - not outside it. It was lame that I was able to be semi-iconic simply because I lived close to the convention.

Perhaps it's just my persona, but I don't like it when I see items that I cannot possibly get. I don't "need" the item or anything, but I feel like there is a part of the game that is missing. I have fun collecting items. I don't know why. I simply believe that all in-game items should be earned and obtain in the game. |
