Lets be honest with ourselves, this is not a real game. They slapped a popular Forgotten Realms title on it and tossed it out there as easy bait. It's almost a straight up flash browser game AND it's free, I'm surprised it even HAS animations. Take everyone's advice, hold down the mouse button to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, pay a little attention to the simple patterns from larger mobs then collect loot.

Being serious, I understand where you're coming from. They designed the game like that on purpose so you would get hit more then never... get the pun?

Just confirming, Haswell is the intel equivalent of the AMD's A series chips? or am I thinking Atom?

Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't even like the XP leveling systems that exist now. Gradually clicking memorized buttons until the bar finally tells you that you've gained a new skill seems strange. With MMO's being well over a decade old, most of us that play them already know the tired leveling formula. Xp is only gained through the following;

Sometimes "resting" boosts the amount so that is technically a form of XP. The exploration category is the least comprehensive in most MMO's, it usually involves a fly by or crossing a border. In life you can gain XP aka Widsom through inner reflection and observation I think both of which may be hard to translate.

For myself it might come down to the fact that I'd rather not even bother to earn XP, unless the game changes it's progression system radically, I don't even think I want to level that much anymore. I think I prefer systems that allow me to create my own reward for my own progression pace... I.E. crafting unique items through experimentation or creating my own combat moves and affects with matching animations.

I know that I'm asking too much lol

I've always felt that an exploit is proof of human incompetence and or ignorance. Not an insult, just saying that no one is perfect. Following that train of thought I don't think that people should be punished for someone else's stupidity. If people don't see any value in the rest of the game and would prefer grinding out identical mobs in an enclosed dungeon, that says more about their game then anything else. This isn't even like the gold duping in D3, this is just XP.

-1 for PW / Neverwinter

I don't mind the game so far but they have higher priority issues to deal with before finding time to ban people for first time minor offences.

EQ Next sounds like it's coming out "relatively soon". Then again I'm in no rush anymore lol

When I see a games do this it reminds me of Apple and Blizzard.

Apple catered to their market for years and didn't really ever change. In the end, or at least up until now, they stuck to what they knew and did best and, it worked out awesome for them. Same thing with Blizzard and WOW

Most of these companies are doing the opposite of what apple AND Blizzard did. They decide to ignore their core consumer base and appeal to wider demographic that may or may not even know their IP exists.

It may yet work out for TESO but based on the leaked footage and official rendered gameplay video I would say that they better hope ArchAge doesn't get here at around the same time they do.

With a space sim, eve style (with better graphics of course) I think SWTOR would have crushed. A few more improvements would have been nice, you guys mentioned pazaak, swoop racing etc... some other fun stuff, multi-passenger ships maybe.

With those additions I think SWTOR would and maybe still could be a monster of a MMO. I think Disney might have other plans though lol. Seeing as they're shutting Starwars shit down at the moment.

Don't feed the trolls Delete5

For the most part SWG was the first MMO I really started playing and, when it came out I thought for sure by 2013....

we would be able to play something that looked similar to "Watch Dogs" but online. If I had known that we'd be playing the games we are playing now........

What I'm equally shocked about is how many folks think these new games are awesome. Is Defiance really that awesome? I mean, SWG eventually got JTL.

I mean, can you B*tches not add space to sci-fi games at release yet?

These f0ckers are tryin to set me up so it's WOW or read Twilight, even Salvatore isht all over his last novel. Can we catch a break here?

I was about to blindly go ATI again but I paused and thought about it. I then found the GTX 660 @ around 200 ish on Amazon. Is this the smart choice at around $200? I remember ATI used to be basically the only option I would consider if I was floating around this price. The GTX 660 looks pretty nice though and as a bonus PhysX would be available. It's going into a Sandy Bridge i5 and on a 24" monitor. I guess I'm just trying to confirm the choice, GTX 660 or Equivalent or something considerably cheaper like a 7770 or GTX 650 and or TI.

Thanks for the advice.

I really can't imagine upgrading this year unless the pricing is comparable to what's out now. There are enough people who won't want to build their own machine who will buy my old gaming rig thus paying for my upgrade but...overkill?

I'm not even sure I buy the whole "PS3 / XBOX 360 held their own" thing. I used to think that maybe they did, that was until I played Crysis maxed out. Then I was pretty pissed at the graphical sacrifices I had to make because of the cross platform thing.

I love Skyrim but I thought it should have looked much better, at least, better than a game from 08. Alas, it was a cross platform game and I can't blame a company for wanting to make money.

At the time of the PS3 release it hit very close to $800 in Canada (taxes suck there). People were lined up for it, this doesn't include the folks who were willing to ebay it at release, which went up to 3x-5x the price. Moral of the story is, if gamers are willing to throw their money at consoles without a second thought because of fanboyism, then anything is possible, including the death of the gaming PC. After all, you might be able to predict hardware advances, but it's much harder to predict people.

I'm going to buck the trend here and say that, yes, I would like to see one of these games shut down and disappear and that would be SWTOR.

There won't be another, competing, SW MMO on the market as long as one already exists.  It doesn't make sense to have an IP competing with itself.

With the utter pile of garbage called SWTOR out of the way, then maybe work can begin on a SW MMO that doesn't reek.

At first I was going to say that EVEN I, the consumate hater, wouldn't want to see any mmo shut down. I was then going to continue on to say that I did wish that SWTOR wasn't a huge success because I didn't want to see other games follow their weak game mechanics and I got my wish.

HOWEVER! You make a seriously solid point. I do like the StarWars IP AND I also follow your line of thinking therefore, SWTOR must go if we are to see a better StarWars game on the MMO market any time soon. Sad to say, especially since people would lose their jobs but maybe they could just know, shuffled over. Not a fan of who ever made the gameplay concept decisions though, THAT dude can eat it.

I'm still undecided on the whole gesture spellcasting thing. I mean, not in an mmo format. If a game is solely based on gesture casting like the video demo then sure, but having to memorize then draw my spells sounds like 1 more thing going in the opposite direction of  "combat strategy".

Using the spell with a gesture or voice recognition sounds great, and that's where I draw the line :P

I'm sure some people will love it, probably the same type that likes twitch based combat. I will admit that there is a place for it in all games though, I just disagree on some the details.

I'm gathfinder that in my lifetime everything will be on 1 chip. It's nice to see intel trying, I may actually purchase an integrated graphics laptop now, well, maybe in the future.
I'm thinking about playing this game but I'm worried about population a little. Am I going to log in and find it hard to find groups for leveling etc..?

What is the point of having everyone capped anyway.

Is there any other reason to it than balance in PvP?

Does MMORPG have to be a perfectly balanced e-sport?

In my world, no. I think that MMORPGs sacrifice way too much to provide space for competitive PvP. In fact, they sacrifice the RPG part for it which is why we are getting these arcade shallow MMOs.

They are not supposed to be FPS, they are supposed to be massive RPGs. What is the point of RPG where your character gets capped and does not progress anymore? At level CAP, these so called MMORPGs become similar to FPS in design. They are still nice to play now and then, but the immersion and seriousness are gone.

Either make max level hardly obtainable (years) or remove levels completely. This design does not make any sense.

"Endgame" has nothing to do in RPG.

Just my opinion.

I think there should be both and something in between. I'd lean towards playing something more akin to what you describe though.

And in place of the tools to actually Roleplay we're getting a "4th Pillar" called story.

Used gear is a double-edged sword.

I don't outright recommend it for a few reasons, but I also don't advise against it so long as the buyer knows what he/she is getting into.

Caveat emptor

- Used gear often will have no warranty support (either expired or non-transferrable).

- Not always from a reputable reseller, so returns/exchanges are often impossible.

- The gear may not be what was advertised, not everyone out there is exactly honest, and some parts it can be hard to tell just looking at them (generic DIMMs, some CPUs, etc).

- If you are buying online (Ebay or some such), you don't get a chance to see the part run before you pay for it. That may be the case even if your in person: a CPU and the buyer doesn't have a motherboard available to test it in, for example. Now this is also true for new retail gear, but with new retail gear you have an exchange period and a warranty period that more or less guarantee that it will work, or you can get your money back.

- You have no idea how the part was treated before hand - it could be that it was also dropkicked from 30 ft, just happens to work the one time the seller tested it afterwards, and has a lifespan of exactly 15 more minutes before some part that got knocked loose finally explodes. A more realistic example are aggressively overclocked parts - there is no way of knowing how much an aggressive overclock has degraded the silicon, or even that it was done; only that will have somewhat diminished the lifespan of the product.

- In a similar vein, you can only have a rough idea of what runtime the part has. All parts have a finite run time, silicon may last 10-20+ years, but mechanical parts maybe have an average lifespan of 3-5 years, even for high quality parts. Fan bearings, rotating hard drives, etc all fall under that category.

Most of the time, yeah, you get a really good deal. It's a lot like buying a used car though: sure you aren't paying the "depreciation tax", but there is also a much higher likelihood of getting ripped off, and there are very few lemon laws that can protect you. And there is a non-zero portion of the population that try to take advantage of just that.

Just be careful buying used, and don't spend more than you can afford to lose trying to get good deals. If your total budget is $500, and you spend it all on used parts, there's a good chance it'll all work out ok, but there's also a good chance something isn't going to work, and there probably aren't going to be any RMAs/Warranty repairs, like there would be if you were to buy new parts from a reputable vendor.

Your not wrong on any point other than maybe getting some used parts from Amazon might have certain guarantee's, much different than rolling the dice with CList.

Certainly if he had a $500 budget we wouldn't be having this conversation BUT if he only wants to spend $120 and is looking for an upgrade THEN the CPU is what needs to get replaced, one way or another. Replacing the video card is just not cost efficient.

I can only say that I've better luck with used parts then with Newegg. My first 2 Newegg purchases (Brand New) were duds and I still haven't been burned by a used part from other sources including Amazon. Again, personal experiences will ibviously vary.

Does this technically count as thread necromancy?

On a $120 budget the only option I would reccomend is used. Seriously, I'm all about cost savings. Anyway here is a true story to illustrate cost / performance. I got 2x5770's for roughly $100 well, more like $70 (used), swapped those for a 5850 and then sold the 5850 for $100.  The reasoning behind selling the 5850 for $100? Someone was selling a 5970 black edition for $100 and I was like...oooooh, and I also got a 120GB ssd from the same guy for $30, and they all work!

So depending on your city population, waiting around for a used and cheap AMD 5800 or better series card and or a Core 2 Extreme CPU could be legit options. Having used and tested both the 5770 in Xfire and single configurations I believe The others are correct and that card is not your particular bottleneck, it runs both Skyrim and SWTOR smoothly on max on an i5 2400 setup. It struggles a bit with SC2 on max (ultra or extreme). Drops to roughly 15-30 FPS and some stuttering with a maxed out Mothership carrier army. But you don't care about RTS.

My 4870 512MB w/ E4400 was actually running SC2 quite well on medium / high - before UPS dropped it. Matter of fact, my woman's old E8400 with the Ep45-UD3L runs Skyrim quite easily on a 4870 and a 3870 (no mist on the 3870).

Side Note: After UPS dropkicked all 4 of our PCs off a 30ft ledge we were forced to upgrade. Before that I was in your position. I threw together a PC quickly just to have something to game on immediately but I didn't want to go all out seeing as I was not totally familiar with the tech landscape at the time. Had the PC's arrived intact I would have most likely found a cheap E8400 and OC'd to 4.0GHz(used).

Side side note: someone is selling a GTX260 here and I'm debating buying it to get the E8400 back up and running for no reason.

Your bottleneck is your CPU for sure. Games like crysis will shit on your CPU ALL day. Going from your E2160 to an E8400 may likely fix all your current issues. Or even a cheap used Q8600 or a QX6700. In short, Quiz is not wrong, he's a really nice guy who is just trying to help you out long term. If you won't get the FX chip/  MB, then the Q or QX intel series is the next best thing, third and last on the list is upgrading the 5770 which may not help at all.

Bottom line, they messed up the whole shabang.

They got a hold of one of the best IP's in the WORLD arguably a top 3 IP and they shenaniganzed it starting with not making their own engine, then continuing with not making a proper mmo. I can only guess what all those network tv commercial spots cost. What's a 7:30pm TV commercial spot cost these days?

Good insight from the OP about other more efficient types of communities. MMORPG's could make a comeback over night if someone put some SWTOR money into a next gen type of MMO. Could take a while but someone or some company may still do it.
