I think a lot of people had bad experiences with CC, or aren't thinking things through, here's my point of view on CC.
DAoC IMO has it in a sweet spot. Sure the CC CAN be long, but that's honestly your fault for not having a counter or two available. With RR's, abilities, and most importantly, friends to cure your mez, i've never been out of a fight in DAoC for longer then maybe a 9 second Zephyr (which you can't do anything, but also can't take dps).
Games like GW2 have it wrong for "open world" (open field combat).
With no immunities you can essentially lock a target down as long as your class allows you too. A hammer warrior with mace mace offhand, and a couple utility skills, can render a single target useless for a lifetime. That's not CC, that's player control. I don't like player control, I like CC. CC is a "50 second mez" break-able by ANYTHING (a 1 dps spell breaks it, a debuff, any action taken against you breaks it). Or a 45 second root broken by a cure, or dps (but you are still able to make actions). A few to most of 9 second stun (I think anything over 10 is going a bit far, but there ARE counters). Cureable by an instant use ability, but has a re-use timer longer then the immunity (this way you can't NOT ever be stunned, but you commonly have a cure ready). In small man fights, lets say 1v1 upwards of 3v3, you SHOULD only get the ONE stun off, the ONE mez off. You can't be stunned 5 times in 30 seconds, or mez'd every 10 seconds, or have your player "controlled" permanently by another. That's not CC, that is player control. That's how I see DAoC. If you were ever waiting for that 50+ second mez to wear off, i'm not pointing at game mechanics for a stupid game, i'm pointing at the player for not being prepared. This kind of CC also helps with large warfare as well. Because it hinders the zergs, but doesn't register them obsolete. Say you're running 80 people attacking stuffs. The defenders have... 60. Obviously the defenders should have the element of surprise. That's where this CC comes in. They can take the zerg from the side, and effectively hinder them just enough to give a crippling blow. Very rarely in DAoC does a first time counter work unless it was executed that spot on. Normally the defenders re-coupe and hit a 2nd time for an overwhelming effect. CC in DAoC is not so much of a "render them useless for 30 seconds", but more of a "I bought us that 10 seconds we need to get in their faces with melee so we don't get eaten up by ranged". In the actual open world fights, like an open field, CC isn't going to do much of anything. There is so much AoE's going on that if you get mez'd it will get broke. Unless you're a ninja and positioned yourself somewhere that AoE's aren't hitting you. I guess I see CC differently then most. I only consider DAoC having CROWD CONTROL, and every other game i've played having PLAYER CONTROL. Being able to keep 1 person, or any amount of people out of fights via cheap stuns and crap, is not fun. But being able to use that mez situationally and change the tide of a fight, is why I love my Bard in DAoC. Hell I didn't even go into how all this works into 8v8's, which is why a lot of people loved DAoC. The way tank grps worked as opposed to a caster grp, or an assist via debuff/nuke grp. Sure this new Camelot game should change up CC a bit, but saying the CC in DAoC is done wrong, or even bad, just makes me think those people haven't really experienced how the CC works in that game, but have rather heard the horror stories of RR1 people with no purge getting mez'd, and being stuck. One last thing (I know, long post), i'm not talking about DAoC pre-2007ish, i'm talking about the past 3-5 years of DAoC, where they had the counters to all this CC. I agree, early DAoC CC was stupid dumb. But they worked with it, and made it what it is now, and i'm very happy with the way it turned out. It's effective but counter-able. And to anyone who says CC in open world doesn't work, go look what the combat in GW2 is like. Cause that game has no proper CC. It's not a bad game, just a different open world fighting style, and NOTHING like DAoC. |

[Column] Dark Age of Camelot: Wayback Wednesday - Rolling Albion
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/18/13 5:17:27 PM
My favorite? oh which one? Probably my guilds huge 8man fights with other very top end players. Smakish, Talini, Sinphul, or hitting mid zerg, Knnuckles, Xyroman and Cats with a little over 20 people. But my favorite memory?
Easter quest, Beno t4. 2 grps of us hibs, set up for a tower camp. 4 druids, 2 bards, 8 PBAoE's and 2 mentalists for Warlord abilities and ST's. We took it fast and waited. 10 minutes, 15 minutes, then finally, Alb zerg came, and oh damn, did they bring some friends. Mindoftheheals and myself were more-or-less trying to lead this little shindig, so we set-up. keeping our storms inside, out of sight, and the PBAoE'ers hiding next to the lord. We held out for a good 45 minutes from over 100 albs. Rescue at the lead. TONS of low RR toons trying to complete the bunny quest for their "Bracelet of Springtime Folly", and here we were, just messing all that up :) I'm still subbed, still running awesome fights, and still making new friends, and enemies. |

I am still playing. Logged off last night, one of the best RvR nights i've had. Was 2 hours of 16(ish)v16(ish). Us on our hibs, constantly getting into with Albs (Smakish's grp for any who care). Was non-stop fun. Won a lot, lost a few, gained a ton of RP's.
To anyone who thinks old frontiers was superior, doesn't remember all of its problems. The keeps were dinky, could PBAoE through walls, LoS issues, just riddled with fail. NF only has a couple of tiny problems (certain positions you can get an interupt inside a keep). ToA is a great part of the game now, and actualy isn't as needed as it used to be at the same time. I make all my own Templates, and used 1 artifact on my latest Hero temp, but used 5 on my latest bard temp (LOVE it btw). Arties are simple to get now, easy to level (45 minutes cause I know a good place) and temps are easy to come by. You can re-make a toon, and get him competetive in a week or two. At max level that is. People say it WAS the best, well what "dethroned" it? The PvP is better, the CC isn't as bad as it was 5 years ago. it's more balanced in terms of classes. Sure you'll get the "Warlocks are bullsh!t", "Theurgs need nerfs", "Hib casters base-line stun is BS" but every realm has their ups and downs. It's balanced, it's fair, it's kicking ass, and I can't wait to play later tonight. To me, no other game gives that roaming PvP that DAoC does, coming voer a hill to see 100+ albs laying seige to a keep, and turning to run away as 10 people, then not even 20 seconds later you're in a fight with another 8 man. No other game gives me the randomness feeling DAoC does, it's like rolling dice on every turn. What's around that corner? Maybe i'm stuck in the "old days" (heck i'm can't even legally drink), but I stuck with the game through its lows (ToA and when EA took over), and it's on a high. Having more fun in the last 2 months then I think I ever have.
Anywho, /rant off, and if anyone wants to try it out again, and decides on a Hib, look for this username in game. More then happy to help a new/returning player to the glory of the game. But if you're not a Hib, I will kill you in NF many many times. |

If you want to express your feelings, do it in one of the ALREADY created discusions. Seriously I don't understand why people feel the need to create a new topic for each thought they have. It's not a matter of asking devs a question, it's a matter of not even TRYING to look for an answer, that has already been given. I have a level 70 Necro, I know what it's like, I watch the official forum for bugs and stuffs. Doesn't mean I go and create a topic for each question or bug. Plus they've already done work on the minion AI, it's much better then it was at launch, still wierd with certain weapons, someitmes they won't attack, but it's far better than launch. If they didn't lock down repeat threads, they'd have a zillion one post threads. MMORPG closes down multiple threads that talk about the same thing. Does that mean the mods here are corrupt mofos? |

Then so be it, but I say it's a load of BS. This goes for any poster, on any game, disregarding it because of a simple zerg. Hating the game because of hackers, botters, siege placements, class or population imbalances, even a disagreement in game design are all things I can not refute. Because no matter how you play the game, those will always be there. But a zerg? Really? Like, really? |

IMO, the BIGGEST problem with WvW is the point system. It alone, makes the two smaller servers battle for 2nd, rather than battle #1. They'd rather see themselves atleast be "ahead" than on bottom. If comparing to DAoC, the only "point system" we had was relics. And who ever had the most was getting hit by both teams. Or if #1 was attacking one other, typically the one team would try and hold out, while the next would try and cut off #1. Not all the time, but a majority. WvW it's not like that. There is many things that WvW can do differently, but I think the point system is really the only flaw. Point systems work great for 1v1 or FvF (faction vs faction), but if you want 3 teams to try and balance themselves out, having a constant point battle will ruin that. Again, this is all in my perspective. But if you want the DAoC RvR "balance" (which we all know it wasn't, but it worked better than anything else) you can't have a points battle. |

Getting irritated... 12/24 servers full on sunday morning???
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 10/01/12 10:41:20 AM
Originally posted by GeezerGamer That would be interesting, but at this point, any theory on what ANets server listings mean is just that, a theory. I think they DO need to do something, all the solo's/small man guilds are going to want to transfer up the ladder to a "winning" team. Honestly blocking them off would be a good idea (IMO ofcourse). |

Originally posted by bcbully I was going through your post history trying to refresh on what you've said about GW2 1-2 weeks ago, I think I remember you saying you were at end-game and that it was very bland, and lacks a "what do I do now" type feeling. (not exact words, but should cover it) But with 20+ pages of posting 95% on why GW2 is so bad, and why it's failing, I couldn't manage to find what I was looking for. But I find it odd that you've reached that end-game yet don't have any WP's in Orr or Straights of Devastation. (or really any high-level zone) |

X-fire is like a double sided blade to me. I don't like it because I think a "majority" of the players that use it, are on the more hardcore side of the spectruum of gamers. So I don't think it exactly fairly represents the entire MMO populace, but rather that of which the more intensive gamers are doing. Again, that's in my opinion. The other side to that is it is the only thing we have to gauge certain games with. I think that x-fire isn't a reliable source (do you believe all the polls you see on certain news stations?), but it's kind of the only source we have. Other than waiting months and months and hope that the developers release statistics (which probably won't happen). So I don't care for it, but it's also the only thing we really have to some-what represent the community. Does it matter? Nah not really, but if you're into these kinds of things, where else will you find that info? |

The boring truth and the hype trainwreck that is GW2
Reviews & Impressions « Guild Wars 2 9/27/12 11:15:40 AM
Originally posted by Randayn I think at this point, everyone is crossing their fingers hoping ANet will keep to their word. I've heard from multiple people in and out of game (I don't have a link) that ANet said each server will get their own borderlands. Whether this is true or not I don't know. Also whether this means they creat so many maps, and randomly pick each map at the start of each new match-up, I also don't know. What I do know, is i'm hoping something gets done soon. Because playing carbon copies of maps is booooooring. |
