TERA lets you swim, but only for RP reasons. No underwater battles unfortunately.

[Interview] Pathfinder Online: A Sense of Pride
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/12/13 12:51:11 PM
Alpha footage looks terrible. Okay, so does anyone have videos (or at least screenshots) of the new build of the game with the Unity Engine being used? Because so far I'm really not impressed...
Mind you, I hear devs always boasting that they're using some awesome game engine when in reality the game itself doesn't do the engine any justice. Aion using CryEngine? Lol, sure, whatever. ArcheAge looks somewhat okay, but still nothing like Crysis. Speaking of which, I'm still upset that MechWarrior Online does NOT look like Crysis considering it's using the latest CryEngine. In fact, I'd have to say only TERA Online got it right, as in giving the Unreal Engine any justice, and even then some areas of the game could still be polished even further...
Maybe there's just no way to please me, but I feel like game devs are skimping out because they still keep trying to cater to people with older machines. I'm sorry, but if you're a PC gamer running an older computer (or God forbid, a laptop), you really shouldn't be. Stick to web browser games, let the rest of us who actually forked out money on real gaming rigs to appreciate the full potential of these game engines... |

[Column] General: Don't Wanna Win
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/12/13 10:44:13 AM
Originally posted by pmiles To be fair, some of the original concepts from developers I've seen or heard are ridiculous. Take TESO for example. Watered down visuals from Skyrim? A lock-on combat system instead of non-target (as it should be like in the original, single-player games)? And what's this crap I hear about some social networking features embedded in-game? Yeah, I don't think anyone called for these, yet the developers are planning to implement them regardless.
I do agree that the gaming community bitches and whines a lot and those who bark the loudest are the ones that the developers tend to listen to the most, and sadly, those certain individuals tend to have the worst ideas ironically enough. It's the same reason why I think TERA didn't quite live up to how it should've, as an example.
I guess in the end, no one really knows what they want. Players think they do, but they don't. Developers think they know what players want, but they don't (to an extent). And I say that because it seems like most online games coming out nowadays are just rehashes of what's already been done, and developers are just trying to one-up each other in hopes to get a piece of pie, so to speak, or earn that quick cash grab before moving onto a different project. |

I wish this game could transform

Originally posted by simplius Satisfied as a F2P user? Lol, not really. F2P users of SW:TOR are totally gimped and nerfed in every way imaginable. You literally have to pay (either through Cash Shop or through subscription) to experience the game as originally intended, which is stupid anyway because it totally defeats the purpose of F2P. If this game was F2P to begin with, then yes, you would be onto something. But with that said, I wouldn't be surprised if certain things were still limited. This is Bioware and Electronic Arts we're talking about here, after all... |

Another failure of a MMO brought to us by Marvel.
General Discussion « Marvel Heroes 1/11/13 2:54:10 PM
To be fair, I never even thought Marvel Heroes looked Diablo-esque, but I can definitely see that now. If anything, I would've immediately compared Marvel Heroes to be an online version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance or X-Men Legends...

I've followed the vids and interviews (mind you, 90% of them are all about the lore and not the gameplay) and so far I'm disappointed. Being both an MMORPG player and one who enjoys TES games, I can't believe the direction that TESO is heading. It's certainly not the online TES game I hoped for, at least not at the moment based on what I've researched thus far. Even the visuals are a step-down from Skyrim.
The fact that this game is already in beta has me concerned and alarmed. It's usually at this development phase where changes are mere fixes and tweaks, but no longer game-changing overhauls. The game truly needs serious help to the core, but of course, what do we get? Social networking integration! |

Elder Scrolls Online: Daggerfall Covenant Questions Answered
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/07/13 10:51:28 PM
While I understand the importance of asking questions regarding the lore, considering this is a TES game after all, I'm still baffled as to why there's too much emphasis on this. What about questions regarding actual gameplay? Are people simply satisfied with what they've seen in the trailers? I, for one, feel like the game needs some major improvements, borderline "overhauls". It's not looking/feeling like a TES game at all!

Sony and other companies throw in patents like this all the time, yet only a few of them actually ever take into effect. I wouldn't worry about this at all.

Why every Asian fantasy mmorpg must have girls in mini skirts?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/07/13 1:33:18 AM
Just look at car magazines and notice how the cover girls are always in skimpy outfits, yet no one's complaining. Honestly, the same can be said for games. And like one poster said, men are sexually objectified in the same way with their muscular bodies, which are often times bulging to the point of unrealism, yet barely anyone complains. Get over it, seriously.

TERA: En Masse Promotes Chris Lee
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/03/13 9:30:17 PM
TERA doesn't need to go F2P. There's already a decent free trial available, the game itself is already cheap, and there are Chronoscrolls. People asking for TERA are just way too cheap or otherwise not seeing the bigger picture. If the worse case scenario comes in which TERA goes F2P, then I can only hope the game doesn't get treated the same way as SWTOR with stupid restrictions imposed.

[Column] The Elder Scrolls Online: Socially Connected on a New Level
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/01/13 10:57:18 PM
TESO Devs, your first priority is to revamp the current combat system and make it completely non-target just like the previous TES games, and only then can we move onto extra fluff like being "socially connected on a new level"...
/sigh -_- |

I'm proud to say that with all of these responses saying that the game is great and worth the purchase it simply means I've done my part as a beta-tester. The game was BORING AS HELL (no pun intended) during beta. But I sent in as many reports and feedback as I could at the time. I haven't looked back at it since. Seeing as how people apparently seem to like it now, I guess improvements have been made after all.
It's B2P, so you really have nothing to lose except for the one-time payment of buying the game. Think of it as purchasing a console game, except for a lot less and requiring online access. :) |

Would you play an MMO that didn't have jumping in it?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 12/15/12 8:44:54 AM
Considering that a majority of MMORPGs are still tab-targeting, I don't even see the reason for jumping. In fact, I find it hilarious when people jump in these tab-targeting games, especially during PvP, because it shouldn't matter. You're locked on, if you're within range you're gonna get hit regardless if you jump or not. Hell, sometimes you don't even need to be in range because of lag and poor netcode, you'll get hit even if you're a mile away from something. The only time jumping is viable is if the MMORPG is NON-target and combat requires aiming. Then you can actually evade... To answer your question, YES, I would still play an MMORPG if it didn't have jumping... but then again, I avoid MMORPGs that use the old system of tab-target anyway. |

Age of Conan: Unchained: F2P Option Retooled
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/15/12 8:35:18 AM
Perfect timing. To be honest, I thought SWTOR's F2P restrictions were bad, then I realized Bioware and EA weren't the first ones to imeplement asshattery business models. SOE and FunCom were just as notorious, but looks like FunCom is starting to see their errors. Lifiting some of those restrictions will surely draw in a crowd once again (albeit small for sure), but at least they're rectifying their mistakes. I just looked at the latest F2P restrictions on AoC and I see a number of things are finally available to free members. THIS is how you set up F2P restrictions for your game. Not the bullshit that Bioware/EA has done on SWTOR.

DUST 514: New Screens Released

Originally posted by uidCaustic Your fault for not having done your research beforehand. The official site clearly states it's a PS3 game. Question is, do you own a PS3? If so, then what's the big deal? If you don't, then that sucks for you and it's too bad that some keys may have been wasted on people who can't even participate in the beta.
Don't mean to sound like an ass, but I'm starting to lose faith in the gaming community, with all the negativity and hate going around here. Can't we all just chill and enjoy the games for what they are? Seriously... |

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: New Developer Blog Begins
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/10/12 9:05:26 AM
I agree with Scellow. The gameplay is totally outdated. It's point and click, no action at all, and trust me that has nothing to do with ps3 limitations, in fact any current gen console is powerful enough to support gameplay beyond the point and click gameplay system. The issue right now is that the developers want ffxiv to be a WoW clone with final fantasy elements. Don't like that analogy? I'll be more fair. Ffxiv is like ffxi with ffxiv graphics. Ffxi was good for its time but its outdated, so is WoW. If they really wanted it to be point and click they could have made the battles more dramatic and flashy like in ffxiii. I saw an alpha test game dev video and I was shocked at how boring it looked, the player literally just stood there taking in hits while dishing out damage, not to mention the pacing was painfully slow.
I had high hopes for 2.0 after the mess that was 1.0, but now I've lost faith entirely. To be fair, the UI has been drastically improved for the better but that's like the only good thing about the game so far. |

Hawken: Primed for Open Beta
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/06/12 8:36:34 AM
Originally posted by Reignson Yep, I've tried them both and still currently testing as we speak.
Trust me, they're the same. Yes, MW:O is more like WoT with legged-mechs, whereas HAWKEN is more like a traditional shooter, but what else? You see where I'm getting at? They're both lobby-based shooters. Neither one provides anything unique outside of online multiplayer matches.
Both games have the potential to be something even greater than they are, but it seems like the devs really just want their games to be the next shooter... but with mechs. It's like comparing burgers from two fast-food chains. Neither one's really gonna stand out unless one of them thinks outside the box a little.
EDIT:
Just noticed something interesting in your post. You said that you found MW:O to be slow-moving and boring. That's fine since it's your opinion, but that also lets me know that oyu most likely never played any of the old MechWarrior games, otherwise you would know what to expect, you would tolerate it, and you would also clearly see what's lacking in MW:O right now.
So inb4 trolls and haters, I actually do care for both HAWKEN and MW:O. Sadly, the developers of either side aren't doing anything to expand their games to the point of clear-cut distinction and that's why I feel like both HAWKEN and MW:O are clones of each other right now. It's the same problem that we see in CoD and Battlefield debates; people are so passionate to claim one is better than the other. Right now, HAWKEN is not anymore better than MW:O, and vice-versa. |

Hawken: Primed for Open Beta
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/05/12 7:59:16 PM
Originally posted by Jakdstripper That's the problem. MW:O is not anymore different than HAWKEN, like how HAWKEN really isn't anymore different than MW:O. If I had to nitpick, it may be because HAWKEN is more of a twitch shooter (faster-paced) whereas MW:O is more tactical (slower-paced). But in the end, they're both lobby-based shooters with mechs. Seriously, MW:O could be so much better and offer more features (especially considering the history and lore behind it) that could potentially topple HAWKEN, but it seems like MW:O's devs are not listening and to me that's a missed opportunity. So what ends happening? HAWKEN and MW:O are clones of each other with negligible differences. It's sad, really. |
