To be fair, TERA's most redeeming qualities would have to be its non-target combat system and decent gamepad support. I've yet to see these implemented in another triple-A MMORPG title currently. Unfortunately, where TERA fails is as what you mentioned, OP, about its lackluster questing progression. It's more of the same as what we've seen in other MMORPGs right now. I guess that's just the nature of themepark-based games, but I feel like the developers could be far more creative with certain things. Oh well, they make the games, we do not, so there's not much we can say.

 

I'm still waiting for that "perfect" game right now. There are too many being made and none of them satisfy me still. Maybe my expectations have gone up so far high it's become unrealistic, but at the same time I can't help but think that game developers are also just being lazy, especially when they clearly know what's out there on the market right now... why make more of the same? How are you going to stand out by doing just that?!

1. TERA's combat system may not be the best, but it sure is better than most of the current MMORPG combat systems that usually consist of tab-target or point-and-click. Furthemore, don't forget that Vindictus is technically a Korean MMO (originally titled Mabinogi Heroes), and the general point that the OP tried to make is that the Koreans have been implementing ideas long way before Western developers only to claim it as "new" or "innovative". That being said, no Western developer has adopted an action-oriented combat system for any triple-A MMORPG title as of yet. 

 

2. The problem with Guild Wars 2 is that all you have to do is kite and walk back as you kill mobs from far away. Rinse and repeat. Because TERA's skills are locked based on classes, there's more variation.

 

3. People are willing to pay so long as there's quality. Even if it's not "quality" in the traditional sense, you can see people still have money to burn with just the amount of cosmetic items bought from cash shops. People even have money to support goldsellers as sad as that may sound, so that should tell you something. The truth of the matter is that nowadays MMORPGs lack in quality and innovation, so no one really wants to be tied monthly anymore. With the exception of the few who are gullible enough to buy into EA and Bioware's F2P schemes for Star Wars The Old Republic (i.e. these players end up subscribing instead of maintaining F2P status).

 

4. Crosshair = action. Crosshair (if implemented correctly) ultimately means non-target, so by that very nature you have to be more visceral in determining and executing your attacks. Fast paced ALSO = action, but it just sets the tempo and not necessarily defines action.

I'm glad Firefall has PvE. If it was strictly PvP, it would be just like the tons of online FPS (match-based/lobby-based) games out there.

This game seriously needs to come out already. There have been too many disappointments these past years and 2013 (as it currently stands) doesn't seem to fare any better. So unless developers and publishers start getting things done right with their own games, it would seem like KUF II is the only one right now that may be the most appealing to me.
Trion this, Trion that. They first need to release the game and maintain it properly (i.e. avoid making ridiculous changes) and then maybe, just maybe, we'll give the praise they deserve. Maybe I'm just cynical after having so many overhyped games fall hard in the past years, and so all the more reason to be more cautious even if an upcoming title seems like it could potentially be successful.

The combat for me is a little slow too.

Unfortunately combat speed never really picks up. For me it's to clunky and slow and I was hoping that since so many told me it picked up later on that it would... sadly they were wrong lol. If they could match the pace of GW2's combat and increase the combat speed of most of the mobs they may have something. Until then though it's another of those "Good Idea, bad implementation" deals.

It has potential lol... but the pace doesn't really pick up like some will claim. 

GW2 is actually slow, too. Until MMOs match the speed ofk, let's say, Vindictus or the upcoming Kingdom Under Fire II then most of the games out there are of the same speed if not slower.

To be fair, the OP is right on several points, and I'm a player who's tested TERA since beta and even subscribed to it when it launched retail.

 

To be brutally honest, TERA isn't really all that different from all the other MMORPGs out now. You still have a typical questing system, mostly comprised of fetch and receive and the occasional escorts, and a lack of voice acting during the questing missions. Cutscenes only serve as fillers and not true directors of the narrative. And yes, there are invisible walls and all these other awkward anomalies that just detract the game from being truly immersive.

 

On the other hand, the game does have redeeming qualities, such as the beautiful visuals, the non-target combat system, and great gamepad support (only rivaled by DCUO, which has excellent gamepad support in an MMO in my opinion). Would I want it to be a "console MMO"? Not necessarily, although if it were to have a console port that may just help open up avenues for the game's population to grow as there are people who are strictly console players.

 

To the OP: I've heard people complain about TERA's awkward controls using a keyboard and mouse. I'm sure you can get used to it after a while, but if not, I would definitely recommend using a gamepad instead. I've been playing the game with a controller since beta and it's been fun and hasn't made me miss a beat in both PvE and PvP. Then again, if you're not used to playing with a gamepad to begin with, then that in itself has a learning curve.

Don't get me wrong, I agree there are some issues with SWTOR (such as the F2P restrictions) but the game itself isn't entirely bad. Then again, I have friends on there to help make the experience much better, so that may have something to do with it.

 

It's one thing to comment and even criticize a game, but don't sound like a hater.

B2P as long as the cash shop is only cosmetic stuff.

Ten or maybe even five years ago, I would've chosen F2P. But that was because I was young and without a job. Now that I do have money and have realized how expensive games are to make, I feel like F2P isn't necessarily the best option for a game developer/publisher. F2P tends to have a connotation of "cheap" and it also makes it looks like the game is at its wits end, a desperate move per se, to gain (or regain) players. I do believe that P2P is still a viable business model, but unfortunately with the overasturated market of MMOs out now, plus the fact that a majority of them suck and are of low quality to begin with, I can see why more people have become jaded and prefer not to pay to play. In other words, people do have money to subscribe (just look at how more people suddenly decided to pay monthly for SWTOR after it went F2P, ironically enough) and people will try to fit time in between their busy schedules so they can play if the game is fun and of high quality.

 

On the other hand, F2P in itself isn't really a bad business model. It just depends on how publishers choose to implement it. For example, EA did a piss poor job with the stupid restrictions imposed on SWTOR's F2P, whereas En Masse Entertainment will not be restricting non-paying customers for TERA when it goes F2P. So, yeah, it depends on the publisher.

Age of Conan is pretty much free to level 80 now I hear. Also the dungeons are fun and the PvP is as well.

I can't speak for the other so-called "haters", but I will tell you why I actually make the comments that I make about this game: It's because I actually care. If I didn't care, I would remain silent and not even bother to pay attention to its development.

The sad part about that is that companies today STILL use the old outdated systems, only a few have attempted to break out...

 

If there's one thing I do have to agree though, TESO failed hard when I heard news about some new social network integration system that they worked real hard to implement. That was like the only "gameplay" related feature I've heard amongst all the stuff they talked about, which was mainly lore. And of all the features mentioned, it had to be something so pointless too...

 

I'm wary of TESO's development. I'm picturing a similar fiasco to Final Fantasy XIV, which I truly, wholeheartedly hope won't be the case (since I do like TES franchise), but at this rate it's heading that direction.

I don't know either. It seems like developers aren't taking risks to do anything new or are just being lazy, while gamers are just being gullible and feeding (money) to the same crap over and over again. 

Developers have taken plenty of risks, look at the oversatured MMO market, and most of the unique ones with "new ideas" have gone the way of the dodo, for good reasons. Innovation is one thing, but trying to remake a genre is waste of time and effort. If people want a single player rpg experience, play one.

Risks leading to oversaturated MMO market? Hardly. If they took risks then we would definitely have more notable games to talk about. Many games have turned out to be "WoW" clones instead. As annoying as that phrase sounds, there's some truth behind it. It also seems like the developers are just trying to one-up each other with a feature or two to grab people's attention in hopes to get a piece of the pie. There's no risk involved. People are trying to go the easy way out. Sadly, the fault also goes to the gaming communities that buy into all of this.

 

The same can be said for single-player games as well, though I have to admit thankfully some of the ideas are much easier to implement in a single-player game than it is in an MMORPG. On that note, my friends and I have recently returned to playing some single-player titles because we're just disillusioned by the downhill trend that MMORPGs have fallen into. And we've played MMOs for almost 10 years mind you, so hardly considered as newbies.

 

TL;DR - Right now, it seems like the genre is all about quantity and no longer about quality.

 

Also you said that "trying to remake a genre is waste of time and effort". That's something a man would say when he's given up. Maybe I'm a bit more optimistic than most, but I believe that remaking a genre is not a waste of time and effort, and in fact, it's probably needed even more so nowadays seeing how stale and stagnant the MMO market has become.

The whole point of beta is to detect and report bugs, so they are correct in saying that part in their EULA.  It's not a free demo to just play around with, then not worry about the hasstle of reporting what you saw.  That said, deleting accounts is a bit harsh, and could easily be abused by unsavory persons at EA.  It would be really hard to contest as well, since EA's customer service is pretty crappy.

 

I think the worst part of how EA is performing their business is trying to pass off another single player game that requires a constant internet connection (DRM is always on).  Crap like that is annoying.  It's another Diablo 3 all over again.  It's lazy copy protection at the expense of the customer .. but EA probably wants it all the same so they can keep players in continuous communication with their cash shops and DLC.  meh.

 

If it weren't for certain games that were published by EA, I would've boycotted them a long time ago.

Right now, MW:O is just your typical online match-based FPS game... but with mechs. If you're all about PvP then this game's for you, but if you're looking for something more then prepare to be disappointed.
