To be fair, it's about bloody time Zenimax released some info regarding actual gameplay and not entirely about lore.

 

In regards to voice-overs, Skyrim, Oblivion, and (partly) Morrowind had voice acting. I've never taken an issue with voice acting, in fact, I welcome it. I believe reading in MMORPGs gets tedious after a while, so it is nice to hear voices doing the talking, pun intended. SWTOR had it right with the voice acting, but where they failed was in hiring too many big-named voice actors, not to mention that many of the cutscenes were mundane and yet still had voice-acting. Zenimax should only hire a few big-named actors, while everyone else can be newcomers and amateurs to cut costs. And even if they say "fully voiced", I'd assume that not everything is voiced, including books, notes, and other text-related material in the game. I don't even think our character will talk, unless Zenimax wants to take the SWTOR route, which I hope they don't.

This game is turning out to become more of a generic MMORPG by the minute. Great way to destroy a franchise, Zenimax. 
So in other words death penalties elicit emotional and psychological responses, some for better (e.g. adrenaline rush, sense of accomplishment) and some for worse (e.g. sense of loss, burden of taking risks). But so far I still don't see how death penalities serve a purpose in actual character progression. To lose XP, items, or perhaps your entire virtual self (i.e. perma-death)... they all seem backwards. (Nevermind the adverse psychological and emotional effects that such losses can have on certain people. One only needs to hear the horror stories of accounts erased from their favorite MMORPGs.) So again, I ask, what benefits do death penalities have in improving your character in an MMO?

DCUO is a great idea for a console game. Could not stand it on the PC.

CO started out with a lot of promise in beta but about release it was way downhill.

I played DCUO on the PC with an Xbox 360 gamepad so it pretty much worked out very well for me. I'd imagine it's harder for people who are strictly keyboard and mouse, though I did try it once with that setup and it wasn't too bad either, so I dunno lol.

So why do you value death penalties in MMOs? What would be the benefits? You said it yourself previously that you don't like them, they frustrate you, and that you admitted they're an inconvenience. Yet, you said you appreciated their purpose. So what purpose does death penalties serve?

Timing, position, and movement are critical to the more difficult fights. All of the videos feature the players just statically standing in one spot, which is nothing like the combat in the game at all. Trust me, you have to keep moving and it's important to do so. The only time a player is rooted is if they are a mage-type casting a spell, otherwise they should be actively moving around.

You seem pretty sure of yourself so I'll hold you to this. I'm on the same boat with a few people here concerned about the dull combat system that was shown in the videos. I hope I get into beta so I can experience for myself exactly how it's like. But if it is tab-targeting (or just targeting in general) then I fear it's not going to be that much better for me personally, especially if it's like WoW or SWTOR where you can still move around, but in the grand scheme of things it's pointless since you're still targeted anyway (lol...)

I prefer DCUO to be honest as it just seems a bit more polished as far as its combat system is concerned. But don't get me wrong, Champions Online can be fun as well. Just ignore all the bugs and issues that haven't been fixed in ages, if you can...

it's simple.

 

let's say a questgiver asks you to kill he scary wolf that's terrorizing the village.

 

the developers can easily make a wolf. It's not very easy to make the wolf scary though.

It just means that the wolf is annoying. 

 

Until MMO developers implement a decent death penalty system similar to Demons Souls in which you learn and improve based on dying (and the game adjusting itself accordingly), all what death penalties amount to right now are nuisances for most players and joy for those who are masochists, both of which are hardly things a company sould be proud of when advertising their game.

 

Sweet, this game is pretty much WoW with Final Fantasy graphics! What fun!
Wow, Champions Online... did they finally fix the bug with invisible boxes upon pickup? Please tell me they did...
I prefer B2P as it just makes more sense in my opinion. But at least TERA got the F2P "restrictions" right, so there might be hope after all...

TESO is also Tab target.  And ArcheAge isn't "Choose a class" and listed.  It has 120 class COMBINATIONS.  You also aren't restricted on the type of gear you want to wear.

"TESO is also Tab target" Wrong. This is TES gameplay in a MMO, so basically, a 3rd or 1st person view like in Skyrim, left click is like your "main attack" and it attacks where you are aiming, there is no "target selection" with a mouse click or tab. Also, it bring TESO a "skill based" gameplay, because you have to MANUALLY dodge and block attacks, not some RNG doing it for you like in most games...

Unless they've updated the combat system, which I wouldn't be surprised if I missed the memo considering a bunch of their news articles are nothing but lore stuff, I'll have to go by what this fansite has to say:

At first glance it seems like the combat system is similar to previous TES games, but take a closer look at when they mention soft and hard locks. Lock means target. Sure, it won't be TAB target since you don't press the TAB button, but the ultimate objective remains the same: you obtain a target, as opposed to free aiming. So until we get official news regarding the game's combat system, TESO remains target-based. Not tab target per se, but target-based nonetheless.

Sorry to break it to you man, but the screenshots you see are indeed directly from the game. (Pretty bad, huh?) Now to be fair, those are images from the game's alpha or even pre-alpha stage, so it's quite possible they've improved since then. At least I hope...

I do not mean to bash the game. In fact, I like some of its aspects (e.g. combat, art style) and I am kind of interested in how it turns out, but I am a little concerned with the endgame in this MMO. At the moment, I do not see the long term motivation to play this game. It just seems to be a little shallow to me.

Maybe it is too early to ask these questions, but do you have any opinion on this?

If this game is themepark as you say, then I don't forsee longevity from a personal standpoint. I'll probably play it for a few months if only for the story. And even then, the only things that can really keep me hooked are if they improve on the visuals and combat system.

I've seen F2P games with decent, if not realistic, restrictions. But I've also seen ones that are just outright ridiculous. I won't namecall because anyone who's followed my posts know which ones I'm talking about. But for those people complaining about F2P restrictions, I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt in that they actually know what they're talking about. Yes, games have become a business and, like any business, it's all about money. But the problem is when a business forgets to be ethical towards consumers, if you catch my drift.

Of all people, EA should be the last ones crying over "robbery"...

Good to hear. Despite the crap I say about SWTOR, the game itself isn't too bad. As you said, the storyline is really where this game shines. Personally, I'm just not a fan of the old-school tab-target system; I feel like I've grown past that and prefer a more action-oriented gameplay (i.e. ones that require aiming and, if possible, has gamepad support). But my main issue with SWTOR is really just the dumb F2P restrictions that Bioware and EA imposed, which is why I will continue to play the game for free and not support them financially. I think of it as a "silent protest", if you will.

 I just watched those links and as I knew the animations looked fine and not robotic or clunky. Half man, Half amazing I am....

More like someone wearing rose-colored glasses. It's okay, you can deny it. We've all done it at some point . In either case, who am I to judge, so if you like the game as-is then more power to you, sir!
