this was supposed to be a f2p builder game released on December of 13' ...

they turned it into a paid beta for an MMO ... cheers to those who paid .

my first online game was AgeofEmpire II then in the same we were using voice chat ...

i can't imagine playing a multiplay game and not using voice chat .

yes sometimes i dont want  to speak, then i mute my microphone, if i dont want to listen i go to any afk room ...

also modern MMOs tend to be action combat which forces the player away from typing while playing ...

EQN without Storybricks and its voxel engine, its another SOE crap ...

i wish Storybricks team joined another publisher even Blizzard to overhaul WoW .

anyway i want to say that i would like to see roles inspired by real warfare and not those childish fantasies.

"Childish" fantasies?

Seems to me like you grossly under-credit the value of fantasy. Fantasy doesn't deny reality. It reflects it and comments on it. In fantasy, we see reflections of real-world politics, religion, and, in the best fantasy novels, often human nature in its many forms. Yes, it bends the rules and creates a new setting, but the ability of a fantasy writer to do so while still immersing their readers in something so foreign to their physical surroundings is nothing short of incredible.

And roles inspired by "childish" fantasy hold value. If they fit the setting and encourage teamwork through interesting means, it matters not what their inspiration is.

i suggest you to go and check the Mound and Blade series, there is a huge mess around this IP and it's mechanics, imagine someone whould be able to polish this game in terms of graphics/animations, code it into an MMORPG and the spend a few bucks for advert. this game would nail down all the other action combat games, and it doesnt have any magic or spell or exotic tribes and gods blessing your character in special quests...

i don't undervalue fantasy, i love sci-fi, and i love the imagination to spin off, i am just tired of the theme human/orc/elf and paladin/berserker/hawkeye/priest etc ... i am already bored from this specific trope ...

their gameplay so far shows innovations, action combat, vehicles and large maps, but there are missing the artists and any kind of renders how you can judge something you haven't seen yet ???

you can judge their gameplay, their spawn mechanics, their third person shooter mechanics, the day/night cycles but not the graphics ...

I'm stoked for some WH40K, but have you not played THQ's Space Marine? If not, you should, because if you like what you see in Eternal Crusade then you can get a good feeling of how it actually plays by playing Space Marine.

i have it already and at the begging i was watching the same gameplay, after a few videos i saw much more functions/animations/whateveh, as they show content they got, at least mine interest, but not so much for founders etc etc ...

amd users go play Tomb Rider for better hair lol

anyway did you noticed in the screenshots they show UI ?

i got tired of the RvR in Aion, after years i play Gw2 ... some history repeats its mistakes :p

now again got tired of this RvR, i am a zombie in GW2 waiting for BlackDesert or i will remain in GW2 .

i can't agree more, people love roles, even in GuildWars2 without the holy trinity, casual players define their own roles and you can see a great variety but its problem is the lack of mesh collision. i see videos from BlackDesertOnline and i hope it wont end on a missed opportunity. there exist mesh collision and there is no healer but different ways to deliver damage or avoid damage, so the roles are defined by their position on the area: players with shields creating a true shield wall, others with leaps getting into the enemy crowd for massive aoe attacks and rangers for flanking attacks and yet we havent seen all the classes.

i believe we have the technologies to copy the medieval warfare or ancient times and create big maps like northern Italy in order to replicate again the renaissance wars between the city states of northern italy or the peloponnesean civil war between the greeks, both occasions had politics and wars. into these wars we saw roles the cavalry, the infantry man and the rangers and every one of these roles had their own variations ...

anyway i want to say that i would like to see roles inspired by real warfare and not those childish fantasies.

also something i loved in GuildWars2 is that every class would be able to act ion every role, the sad part is that the PvE was only about fast damage deal so every role died ... at least in WvW or sPvP its different and dont listen the trolls who talk about zerg fights.

I've been playing AA for a couple of months and find it pretty enjoyable. Why all the hate?

I hear people saying it is P2W because you can buy an extra 2k LP a day. Ok, I get that. It's a little P2W'ish. I know I won't be buying any LP potions. I have never once run out of LP. And yes, I craft, a lot.

The game is fun for me. The crafting is deep'ish. There is open world housing and farming. The combat is pretty same'ish, but ok. There are naval battles. Gliders, mounts....

Graphics are ok, runs pretty well, no major bugs that I've encountered.

I've been playing mmo's since EQ in '99, and this one is atleast in the top half, imho. It's the closest thing to SWG, my all time fav, that I've played.

So tell me, why all the hate?

if people hate it then its good for the game !

but if people ignore it then its bad .

for my point of view it looks great just for me after the GW2 experience i cant play anymore static tabtarget combats and i want an engineer xD

although on their betas back in years they showed amazing graphics the final release (2 years ago) was dumped down but they are just acceptable .

after those 2 main issues the game is an amazing one, and if people hate it, it means it hurts their beloved crappy game and they cant accept this fact xD

well yes its on early design but on every video they stream they have to show (and not post a text blog..) to their community something great and innovative.

but i dont believe this game will be released on 2015, there might be an early access beta for 200$ xD

Little bit of "what if" fun

Game of Thrones (3 way DAoC-esque, Stark vs Lannister vs Baratheon. Expansion introduces Targaryen faction and Dothraki as playable race :O

nice idea but please not another RvR !

for RvR only the lore of DUNE sounds a great idea between the 2 great families and the rebels or the empire as a 3rd factions everything taking place into the desert like planet with the spice to be the currency and players would form guilds and conquer sources or forts into the name of the family they represent. Also some space combat would give the freedom to the developers to use their imagination and not be restricted from the heavy lore... and later on we could see more planets as expansions or more families ; )

well the combat and it's gameplay are great, i cant get into any other western MMO cause their combat feels so static ...

the actual problem with GW2 is not their living story or the removal of holy trinity (seriously both are great) but the fact that it is another themepark . if the game instead of WvW had GvG content, where guilds would fight even in the limited Mists for the PvE control, and let the politics to spin off then it would hook players and create addictions. Instead the developers preferred a casual game and mechanics which would create a polite society. Well they made it, the GW2 chat and community is one of the best i have ever seen in that scale.

so we have to choose what we want a casual and friendly game or an addictive one ?

back on topic Anet at the state they are only with a new boxed version would raise again their sales, the combats are great and for the name of Triforce i hope they wont add class limitations like tanks and healers ...

Recently I have seen a lot of negative comments about Wildstar. Something like  "the game is too hard", "attunement takes too long" or "the game is dead".

Now I know MMORPG is not the right forum to write it in because lets face it, the only community that is more toxic is the LoL community, but still I find it relevant to post here.

People in here like to think they played old-school MMORPGs, back in the days when it was hard and took time. Well, Wildstar is hard and it takes time, but now its bad because of it? When people suggest shit as Raid Finder and easier attunements, thats where I dont get it... Raid Finder is NOT an easier way to get gear or progress! Raid Finder is an EXCUSE for not being willing to find a guild.

And thats the main issue. People complain because they dont want to find a guild. They just want to queue and get items by themselves. And its the same people that complain about too much single player content. Double standards at its best.

Now some might say, "The guilds demand too much time from me", but you also know that Raid Finding will take twice as long to progress 20% of what a guild could. People have forgot what it means to have hard group content and now they are whining because they dont remember how to play an actual quality MMORPG. It doesnt hurt me that people cant figure it out, it hurts me that you have to talk shit about the best game out there because YOU dont remember how to play a group-focused hard game.

On the note, I have played almost every game to the late game (WoW, Rift, TSW, Vanguard, STO, Vindictus etc. etc. etc.) and this game is more polished, more difficult, more enjoyable and has a lot more players than the average MMORPG and is definately NOT dead.

dont worry its coming the era of destiny and other similar games, where there is no community just coop without talking to other players, people will become like bots looking for cheesy experiences. Half posters in this forum don't know what they want, only to pay more and more cause the more expensive the better it is.

Great article. Probably one of the best I've seen on this site in quite a long time.

It's no big surprise, but as per usual on this site, so many posters have completely missed the mark as to what the article was talking about. Instead, they see this as yet another opportunity to flame the game they never liked enough to really play to begin with. Typical.

To add more irony to this thread, many of these same posters are demonstrating their membership to the very same problem the author is writing about. That we have been conditioned to expect these linear "!" quest hubs, and that most of us don't understand any other type of game.

This is why he talks about GW2 specifically, because GW2 is a game that starts off with "!" hubs (in the form o hearts), and systematically weens players off of them, and towards a more exploration / events based experience.

I see so many people complain that 'questing is just going from heart to heart, nothing innovative there' or 'endgame lacks any real focus or progression'. Well, they're half right. But here's the other half:

- Those guided experiences you find 1-79, become less frequent for a reason. You are supposed to (at some point, which is left up to the player), start to take the initiative into your own hands. That 'lack of focus' you see at endgame, is because the entire world is open to you. You can literally go and do whatever you want. It's complete freedom. And true freedom in an MMO is something that has become so foreign, that most gamers seem to be clueless about what to do with it.

GW2 may not be a true sandbox, but it is easily the least linear themepark on the market today. Which is why many people call it a 'sandpark, or a thembox'. It's a hybrid of the two. And I would definitely love to see more games trying this type of design. It doesn't mean they have to mimic every little feature GW2 does, and most probably won't, But the game has done a lot of features this genre actually needs. Unless you want to be stuck, 10 years from now, running from ! to !, waiting in a que for a tank or a healer (or maybe even both), complaining about how people don't really socialize in these games anymore, or struggling to fill that raid slot for the Nth time, and complaining how noone raids anymore.

i would just like this post to be repeated cause half of the posts on this thread come from people who have blinkers onto their point of view ... also most of negative posts come from people who never played or played or a little the game never going to understand the mechanics, is like talking for war based on pictures and assuming that wins the army which has cleaner uniform ...

well except the weird resurrection scroll, item, whatever it is, everything seems legit.

also the exp boost are not so bad and they are not p2w, just some people will be able to progress faster but atm there are stat caps free players will be able to catch them later. Trion except cosmetics doesn't sells something which players cant find in game and affects their abilities in fights. Some whiners here have to clarify what is p2w...

Ii don't like ArcheAge either but thats cause of mine personal reasons but cause i don't like i don't have to blame it of being a bad game ! TESO was a bad game Wildstar and ArcheAge are not bad games, no matter i like them or not. Better some people in this forum hold their hate ...

their cash shop for sure it has problems and the main is the lottery from the black lion chest for tickets it's uninspiring and none would spend  money for lottery for skin, also they are expensive for lottery. The first time they introduced it people got mad (i think it was on 1st Halloween) they still have this system and players prefer to farm keys from personal story rather spending money.

their cash shop could have life if they added items to personalize the home instance, but not they have abandoned a whole function in the game ... also they could add tickets for the skins and not lottery ...

also if they had a free client strict for the Mists for free access to their sPvP, their cash shop would get a horrible strong boost from a larger pool of people who haven't spend money and would spend money for finishers or for hosting their games ... but nope another lost chance for another well polished part of the game which is tied to a small player pool .
