Wow what a fascinating thread. When will it get deleted? |
|

Oh come on OP you must have known that the first reply to any post asking for a space-based mmo will ALWAYS be EVE. Every single thread like this gets the same replies over and over again. There is nothing else. It has been that way for years. |

Originally posted by Shinami I apologise for cutting down your post as it is one of the few times when I have seen someone posting on this forum with real genuine knowledge instead of opinion passed off as fact. Too many times people such as the OP who know nothing at all about the real costs of running mmos will claim that monthly fees are needed. I wish more people understood what a scam monthly fees are. Unfortunately the majority of mmo players are like the OP and sincerely believe that they are neccessary. Now however when a company comes along that isnt being greedy and trying to rip people off, people become suspicious. They actually WANT to pay extra money for nothing because they are used to it. Its pure follow the flock mentality. Everything you have said is exactly spot on. I also want GW2 to succeed for the same reason. Hopefully other companies will follow their example and in time we might finally see a decline in rip-off monthly fees and an increase in good quality mmos.......because those monthly fees clearly arent making any difference to the piss poor mmos that keep getting churned out these days. |

Well so do I, but you will just have to wait wont you |

If I lacked knowledge on something (which I do a lot) and then posted something which was wrong, I wouldnt be upset or angry if someone corrected me and pointed me to something useful. I would feel a bit sheepish and humbled perhaps, but also glad that my knowledge has been improved. Posting "go back to school" is something you would have done. I chose not to do that. Of course some times I am indeed a sarcastic shitbag, but today is not one of those days. |

are blizzard behind hacked accounts???
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 9/24/10 2:19:45 PM
Originally posted by jessian Sorry if this has been repeated by others as I havent read all of the responses, but the email you received was a fake. If you log into "your account" using the links it provides, it will take you to an exact copy of the battlenet login webpage. I have been receiving these emails over the past month. Unfortunately I was too stupid to realise they were a scam. Its all pretty authentic looking. However recently I contacted Blizzard support without using the links in those emails, so without realising it I got through to the real Blizzard. They confirmed that they had not contacted me at all and that all of those emails are fake. Character transfers, a purchase of Starcraft 2, password changes, illegal selling of accounts, etc etc........none of it happened. It's tricky though because the emails use the same headers and email addresses as Blizzard does. Also I havent played any Blizzard games for about a year so I have not logged into my account through the normal methods for a long time. If I had I may have spotted the scam sooner. Now I know to just block and ignore those emails......which is annoying as I get one or two every week. Oh well. |

This feels like the sandbox everyone has been clamoring for.
Fallen Earth « Fallen Earth 9/22/10 7:48:46 PM
Yeah it "feels" like a sandbox game at first, but in truth it isnt one by any stretch of the imagination. The game world is big and open but really its as static as any other themepark game on the market. Nothing you do matters in the "gameworld" and I found that players tended to ignore each other as there wasnt any real incentive to interact. I thought the use of stats to increase would make it all more interesting at first but it rapidly became a real chore for me. No danger. No excitement. Oh this npc wants me to kill 10 bandits. Why is that? Will it matter? Do I really have to? Is there something else to do? I could just ignore his quest and wander off but then I'm just ignoring the game so whats the point in that?........especially considering that there are more npcs waiting down the road who also want me to kill 10 bandits......or 10 snakes.....or 10 whatevers. Oh I can dig up some carrots I suppose and make a salad. Yeah this is what real gaming is all about. Hmmm. All the while players are everywhere, running back and forth between npcs and the designated killing/harvesting hotspots like an army of mindless cloned sheep and completely ignoring each other as they focus on the only thing they can change - leveling up their own characters. It's not the players fault though. They were just playing the game the way it has been designed. It just seemed so drab to me, having a game where each player reads/plays their own copy of the story while watching others run around doing the same. I thought Fallen Earth was going to be really interesting as its developers seemed to have a vision for something different and new and yet to me it actually seemed even more boring than other straightforward mmos. I got no sense at all that I was in a harsh land where various factions were in conflict with each other. The crafting system was also incredibly dull. I have no idea why some people thought it was good. No variety to it whatsoever. Get blueprint. Collect required items. Click create. Wait for item to appear. Repeat. Level up crafting skill. Move onto next object in the list. Repeat. Why am I doing this? Who cares what items I can make? I'm in a static lifeless world which I cant have any impact on and no one gives a crap about each other so why am I crafting stuff that everyone else can make anyway? I played Fallen Earth for a few weeks and found it sort of interesting for half that time, but after that it just became painfully boring to log in and plod my way through it. All I could see was a loooooong and boring journey through an arid desert of a game. After that I just let my months free (?!) play expire. Maybe there was something amazing and awe inspiring way off in the distance but I just couldnt muster the interest to wade through the boring grind to find out. From what I have read of peoples reports the game doesnt really change that much.......but then these mmos never do. What you do at the beginning is pretty much what you will be doing all the way through. Fallen Earth seriously turned my brain off. I felt like someone had poured cement into my soul lol. Yep the world of Fallen Earth is indeed a harsh wasteland. It certainly sucked the life out of me. But yeah I really dont think this is the sandbox game so many people have been waiting for (probably because it isnt one), but at least some people like it. Each to their own I guess. |

In other words this is a totally useless thread that serves no purpose whatsoever. Is GW2 more like jelly or chips? Who gives a shit! |

Indeed the Warhammer 40k universe has a pretty high "coolness" factor and it certainly has a lot of potential to translate very well to the gaming medium. I have just finished reading book 9 of the Horus Heresy (Battle for the Abyss) which was ok but not great.......although it was better than I expected considering it was written by Ben Counter who isnt a particularly good writer. In fact half the series is pretty rubbish and badly written, full of extremely tedius and repetitive situations involving yet another unstoppable army of super soldiers invading some planet full of heretics or aliens......or a string of really boring descriptions about how glorious and wonderful the primarches are and how all the space marines kiss their arses. It gets very old very quickly. Oh and I love (in a sarcastic way) the way the World Eaters (whose main thing is that they are angry all the time) primarch is called Angron. Yeah lots of thought went into that one lol The best book in the series though is the 7th book called "Legion" which was written by Dan Abnett, who is perhaps the best warhammer author. All the others pale in comparison to his writings. Ironicly part of what made the book so good is that there is very little focus on actual space marines, which are really totally boring to read about. Anyway all of this is irrelevant when it comes to games, especially mmos. As Grunty advised, I wouldnt get too excited about the upcoming mmo title. I think it is highly unlikely that this game will be the equivalent of a Dan Abnett book. Oh and you should check out books written by Alastair Reynolds. His stuff is more grown up and crushes all of the warhammer novels......although it wouldnt translate well into a game in my opinion. |

Originally posted by jvxmtg But that's because you're judging it by the extremely poor standards of other mmos.......poor standards that people have grown to expect and accept over the years. There is no reason at all why an mmo should be released buggy and incomplete and then use its customers money to finish making the game a few years after it has been released. This doesnt happen with other types of game so why do players constantly make excuses for mmos? ArenaNet are saying NO to that in the same way that they are saying NO to subscription fees. It seems to me that ArenaNet is the most respectable company around at the moment and could well end up making all the others look lazy and greedy in comparison if they dont follow their example. If ArenaNet can release a complete mmo with no sub fees then why should anyone pay other companies a sub fee for an incomplete one? |

That article felt like a breath of fresh air on a sunny day. The more I read about GW2 the more excited I feel about experiencing it, as they are taking mmo game design in the direction I think it should be going. I absolutely love the fact that things actually happen in the gameworld through action and gameplay, rather than just relying on a text file attached to an npc with an "accept" button to be clicked on. I always thought that was a complete copout and a space filler to compensate for lack of game making skill on the developers part. It's much easier to get a bunch of people to type up text files and pass off their online book as a game, than make an actual game to play. These events happen for everyone rather than being seperate copies for each individual player (hence the single player game design of other mmos) and the fact that the conclusions of these events effect what opens up elsewhere is just awesome. Its a great step towards creating a real multiplayer game where the player participates in a simulated world and has to deal with the results of other peoples actions, as opposed to the online single player co-op games we have been seeing for years. Different stuff will be happening in GW2 each time I log in. Now thats a real mmo. Sure things will eventually cycle back and repeat themselves but even still this is definately the kind of thing I have been waiting for for ages. GW2 is going to give me a reason to play mmos again. Me = excited. |

This article is a joke. How can WAR be scored a 10 on anything? A 10 = perfect. WAR is miles away from perfect. In fact hardly any game should be considered perfect. The only thing that made any sense in this article is the first bit about the game world. To say that WAR is effectively equal to DAoC is just crazy. It isnt anywhere near as good as DAoC. The entire design of that game was so much better. I wish a new revamped one would get made. |
