So for the big issues here -

PvP is shaping up nicely a second 100 player FvFvF persistant warzone is set to release soon after launch. FvFvF is a big bonus that's off setting some of the early limitations (people seem to forget how small 10 year old games were at launch).

Balance - Will be a minor issue as long as a set of skills are not particularly broken. Flavor of the month will quickly have counter since building an alt, waiting for a patch or w/e isn't an issue here. You just change your skill set to counter the flavor of the month in short order.

Cash Shop - Cosmetic Items only. Cash Shop items are not exclusives, they are all available as in game items through vendors, quests or acheivement rewards. Confirmed cash shop items are Clothing peices and additional save slots for Ability/Equip builds  (default is 3)

Failcom -  AO and AOC are not the only products Funcom has, but they are the two that Guate lead during development. Guate no longer works for Funcom. Ragnar is new to MMOs but has a lot of fans for his work on Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Ragnar writes amazing stories, Funcoms designers knock it out of the park time and time again. Gaute is no longer around to set unrealistic time lines and make empty promises... WINNING!

I think I've figured it out; the reviewer has been reading the "Top X of 2011" lists too much in recent weeks and is grading on a scale where 1 = Best! So he's actually giving TOR a 1.3/10

Illuminati - pretty spot on cuz they're easy to understand. They'd be the rich kid who has nothing better to do all day then spend money. Reality TV Stars and Rock Stars

Templars - Are not religious in any stretch, just single minded... once they decide something is bad then it's pretty much game over.  Republicans and The Nazi Party (I could have said Catholic Church but there's the whole religion thing again)

Dragon - Instigators and manipulators. Info on them isn't hidden so much as waiting for one worthy of finding it. Anonymous and... hmmm... The Oracle from The Matrix?

ROFL at people voting for SWTOR as being innovative.  I mean... c'mon!  All they did was add BioWare storytelling... bad and formulaic BioWare storytelling... to Warhammer Online then gussied it up with lightsabers and spaceships.

Recipe for SWTOR

1 Can Bioware Storytelling

1 Generic MMO Skill/Combat system, seperated. Discard Auto-attack or save for later use.

1 Box of Lightsabers

Mix well, serve over WoW gameplay with a side of StarFox

Poll is so Broken!

Bloodlines Champions, Heros of Newerth and the king of them all League of Legends are MOBAs, not MMOs... I'm not sure what WoT would be? Multiplayer Online Combat Sim (MOCS)? List should have been more like Global Agenda, ABP Reloaded, and Fallen Earth maybe?

3 top picks for Most Inovative clones are a game that has been rehashing the same content and making up total BS out of desperation for 8 years and 2 games that devs will admit looked at the first and decided "if it's not broke, don't fix it". I voted for Glitch by default since I've never heard of it and but know DCUO for all the things it did wrong. The others don't even count imo.

TSW is my most anticipated in years and turning lots of heads in recent months. I voted for it as rising star although as an admitted FC Fanboy who's been following it since 09 it felt out of place lol

Gave GOTY to EVE simply it's the only one on the list that I might mourn if they pulled the plug tomorrow :-D

I expect the FvFvFvM element to play out much the way it did in Anarchy Online; grouping up with the other factions is possible but not common. I think it's interesting that they're not taking a "save the world" ideology for ANYBODY though... you go in and clean up the mess but everybody in the town still dies. It's not your job to save them in TSW, just to make sure the rest of the world never finds out what happened to them.

Games that are in "Beta" while the company is making money from the product aside...

A normal Open Beta is usually available for anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Shorter and longer Betas do occure but usually are an indication of rush to market or extensive technical issues during the OBT respectively. Open Beta is often the last stage of development before launch, through Alpha and Closed Beta the developer feels confident that they have squashed enough bugs and polished the product enough that a broader group is needed to discover some of the more specific faults that only occur under very specific conditions (Crash to desktop when Class Z uses skill X while under the effect of status Y if they are running P Processor combined with G video card).

OBT is also a sort of bench mark of player interest and allows developers to guage the effect a larger player load will have on their hardware, it's not uncommon for OBTs to include stress tests where large numbers are encouraged to congregate in a single area or massive temporary passes are granted to see how well the system can handle large volumes of players.

Kudos for knowing that Anarchy Online is Still Alive™

Atlantica Online

Grind - Hard for me to say? 50 days maybe at hardcore grind mode?

Solo = PvE - Player + up to 8 Mercenaries in a strategic turn based system akin to old school RPGs

Group 3 Players + up to 24 Mercenaries!

-Monsters also attack in groups of up to 9 per swarm and up to 3 swarms per battle.

Soloable - Yes

Instanced  Group Stuffs - Yes both with the normal battle system and TBS (Tactical Battle System) which is akin to playing Final Fantasy Tactics or other such RPG meets Chess type combat systems.

PvP - Weekly Tournament, 3 Formats of Arena duels rotated through the day. World PvP: Only against War Targets. War Declarations against other guilds/nations. Guild leaders have ability to pass Kings Judgement on enemy players insta-killing them and sending some of their valuables directly to the guild's vault.

Mid/End Game Raiding - Yes, Guild and Nation (alliance of guilds) dungeons reward points that guilds use to bid on ownership of cities.

Crafting - Unique system; Retired companions in home aid in crafting (like SWTOR) player crafting progress is based on combat XP gains, Auto-Crafting (afk-crafting) also avail.

Player Housing - Yes.

Player Review: The most intersting aspect of this game is the strategic combat style that is particularly noticable in PVP. Dozens of Mercenaries at the players disposal, all of which are highly customizable combined with the unique combat mechancis akin to an early RPG. Fair warning that it is a "buy to win" type F2P however all mall items are transferable in game at a price that is deemed reasonable for somebody who is capable of farming end game content. Around level 100+ there is a serious gold crunch/grind fest to keep your skills and mercs fully upgraded due to exponential increase in rareity of skill books, number of materials need and shere number of mercs available to the average player. One nice thing is that the game applies a Might Score to your stats. Players in the same tier of PvP based on wins/loses have even odds, an item mall user with insane items will see their Might reduced to give only a slight advantage that can be overcome by being out played. Between the Combat systems and Crafting I would have to put Atlantica Online as one of the most unique MMOs out there.

Currently Playing:

League of Legends

CrossFire

World of Tanks

Atlantica Online

Age of Conan

Dungeons and Dragons Online

Basically LoL has become my main title with CrossFire and World of Tanks for the stress releif of putting a bullet in somebody's arse. The MMO's on the list are the F2Ps that are most appealing but each still lacking something to make it my main game.

Waiting for:

The Secret World; after this goes live League will fall to my patch day game, CF and WoT will maintane their spot in my roster and the F2P MMOs will probably see a few cameo appearances just to say hi and see if any guild mates wanna come play TSW with me lol

I agree. I hate the QQ too.

I had written 6 paragraphs of rage post but just writing it was enough. I deleted all the parts that were just rage... not much left lol

Moral of the Story: If you're Pre-Order is because of impatience rather than anticipation you're an idiot. Week 1 after launch is only for those in whom patience is a deep set virtue.

So for now, the games which are the most fun are the ones which are most successful.  And that feels right.

I have to assume that you completely missed the point the original poster had intended to make. As a long time MMO player and former WoW player I can fully understand the opinion expressed here. I would certainly hope that the rest of the responders stop and realize that if you haven't dealt with  "Time Progression", "Warr Camp" or "Champion Spawns" then chances are you're not a part of the gaming community that this thread is actually relavant to.

Fun is a completely subjective word just as the example of a Flight Simulator showed. For those of us who enjoy MMORPGs it is about the Challenge, the thrill of victory that is only truly appriciated against the grim taste of defeat. Making close bonds with the people that we rely on and shed blood with repeatedly as we grow from weaklings into legends.

If a company designed a game which involved guns from a first person perspective they might be tempted to lable it a first person shooter. However, if this game also featured a radar which gave away enemy location at all times flat damage reguardless of body part hit and a "tab-target" lock on system to make it more accessible to players who didn't have the reflexes/aim/map-awareness for standard FPS the CoD faithful would be insulted that it would dare lay claim to the genre. WoW is no less a farce in calling itself and MMO than the fictional "FPS" that I detailed.

WoW at no point requires a player to group in order to progress, therefore they don't. That's not multiplayer...

The World of Warcraft had far less square footage than it's predecessors. Hardly Massive...

You do need an internet connection to play it. This one they got right.

Every character shares the exact same story. You're all "THE chosen ONE", wtf?  It's predecessors had no problem beginning a quest dialog with "Oh great, another one... Well I suppose I can find something for you to do too" reminding you that you were one of many grunts looking to prove themselves. In a Role Playing scenarios the game may guide you but it  doesn't lead you by the nose.

It is a Game they got this one to.

They only got 2 out of the six right, and one of them is a technicallity since it could just have well been a Diablo style single player game with similar online capabilities. I doubt anybody would have noticed a difference.

WoW may be entertaining for a period but it lacks the long term (measured in played hours, not subscription length) "fun" that is expected from those who remember what MMO meant before Blizzard decided to take the genre for a game which barely met the qualifications.

This is the most commit I can give based on IP-

IPs that would have me watching dev site from day 1 till at least Beta feedback:

World of Darkness (Currently on back burner for CCP)

Wheel of Time if combat system was good and the grind well disguised behind story driven goals.

Ugh when I started typing I had a longer list but it just kept growing till I lost the track of 'em all in my head. TBH the Tolkein style fantasy (Elves, Dwarves, Orcs) has been done to death, resurrected and repeated a dozen times over. Robert Jordan's world is still fantasy but at least it offers a different perspective on it. Other than that I think I'd be most interested in any title that got away from fantasy (Horror or Sci-Fi) and did it well. Hense my interest over the past several years in The Secret World and SWTOR (follower since 2007 and 2009 respectively)

<p>"TSW will get a lot of hate not because of TSW, but for one sole reason, we all know what it is. Funcom has earned their piss poor reputation for a reason."</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Um yeah, that's what I said? AO and AOC both had horrible launches. Visually and conceptually their games are top notch but playing on day 1 (hell even month 6) was like bashing your face against a wall. But going to give Ragnar the benefit of the doubt since this is his first MMO release... we'll see if the Beta is a breath of fresh air or a dreadful deja-vu and go from there.</p>
<p> </p>

http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/11/22/interview-the-secret-worlds-bylos-and-bruusgaard-pt-1/

Part 1 of the TSW interview mentioned above. One of the better interviews of late if for no other reason than the questioner had been given a hands on look at the closed beta. Too many interviews recently just give impression that questioner was completely unfamiliar with the topic asking questions about things that the community knew was misinformation 6 months ago.

Yeah and got that one in while I was editing the first to rant less about instanced missions and include your follow up lol

To be honest I'm not really sure how this can be applicable to the current generation of MMOs. Yes they are enjoyable, but I don't know if their application is possible at the moment.

A lot of the things he brought up are probably better suited to today environment than the were at the time. The body-build mechanic (and in the game example I used earlier even a Large Female got slightly different yet balanced and sensible bonuses compared to the large male) for example is not that far a stretch from racial bonuses so that's no big deal. As for Organic I fail to see how a 6'7 300lb assassin or a 5'0' 110lb tank seems organic to current games.

Bullet time is possible without major time warping with MXO's example as it put the player and target NPC for that move in a 1v1 duel at the middle of a much larger battle for the duration of the move. Certain criteria needed to be met but it also allowed more interactive fight sequences for pure eye-candy.

The one I'd most like to see given a second birth is probably random quests. Random Missions in Anarchy Online were one of the first examples of Instanced content, a technology and idea that has come a long way since. You check the bulletin board. Then they give you 6 options that more or less fit the mold and offer an xp/coin/item reward (1 item per group member). When you pick one, one of the dozens of doors or cave entrances in the area would hold a dungeon that was generated from a pool of several hundred pre-build rooms being randomly assembled and populated. Team dungeons had multiple floors and a boss (complete with boss loot tables) at the end. 100 people might use the same door as you but they all had a completely different challenge awaiting on the other side.

Botches are also easy in todays games. Hit/Miss and Damage are still based on background "dice rolls"... you roll a full on 0 and you wack yourself with the hammer or cut you hand on the sword or shoot yourself in the knee with an arrow.

Edit - Sorry for wall of text, wasn't that long in my head but as the OP pointed out ... MMO encyclopedia..

I think Secret World will be the next down the pipeline. We'll see the "ooo shiny new" people turn on TOR and then hail it next.

yeah TSW is up for beta within the next month or so and launches in April.

It hasn't gotten nearly as much attention as SWTOR had this close to beta but then again with SWTOR on the shelves EA might redirect their marketting dollars for the next few months.

Either way the ones who have heard of it are more inclined to berate Failcom than actually give the title more than a passing glance.

Off topic: EA is behind 2 major MMO releases in short order. Compensating for letting Command and Conaquer Online go in the trash bin all those years ago? I mean who would want to play an MMO convert of a RTS series? lol

lol Yeah I been on the scene for more years than I'd care to admit...

Many of the ideas were and are really good, as you said they were just used in games that were otherwise sorely lacking. I guess I was playing devils advocate a bit because of how unwilling many people are to give something a second chance. Some of the references were obscure and that was more for my own OCD and not wanting to completely ignore any of your ideas which were all worth mentioning imo.

I guess I could say my fear is enough of those good elements have been done badly (poorly balanced or buggy) or packaged with horrible ideas in the past that the skeptical MMO audience as it is now would pick it apart and cite examples like the ones I gave as reasons the game is destined to suck.

"lol They ripped off 20 different games and every one of them was a flop. Epic fail" - ForumTroll1337

You can see the same thing if you look at any forum or review of Funcom's next game because of the launch with AOC... Despite the fact that once the ironed the kinks out AoC became a polished and engaging game neither the company or the game is going to be remembered for anything more than a horrible launch and empty promises.

He's in a tank top cuz that's how he wants to dress at least he wasn't wearing a tutu or wedding dress. He's using a hammer because that's where % block boost and + threat are.

Appearance is purely cosmetic your stats come from elsewhere. The group that they showed was very limited as it's newb character so doesn't have the diversity. In the same preview you can see the "hammer chick" swap out most of her hammer stuff for fireballs and lightning bolts. Obviously an older character would have more options for versatility than one being shown in the first dungeon encounter of the game. Some skills are weapon specific (getting smashed with a hammer = stun, getting slashed with a sword slightly different effect) but just as many are available to any weapon set. You can take the defensive abilities from your hammer guy and use them with a sword and combine those with the ability to throw grenades from the assault rifle set if you wish.

For the focusing one a single role:

If they execute the game design as planned the idea is that different content will require different skills even as a solo character. Some encounters will not be possible if you haven't picked up some CC from somewhere, others will have enemies with 100% immunity to melee/ranged/element so you'll have to switch up a bit to hit them with something that will work. Stuff like that. There's hundreds of hours worth of interview and preview material from the past couple months going into a lot of aspects, far too much to bother trying to sum up or to take a single vid/interview and read between too many lines.

Sorry if this comes off as Fanboi defensive; I'm honestly aiming for clearifying and informative for any who show genuine interest.

yeah I know it's a wall of text and sorry about that but "Everybody can do everything in a bunch of new games" just didn't seem a worth while post, meant to be more of an article.

SWTor doesn't stray far from the pattern to be sure but during Beta Flashpoints groups I was with didn't seem to have too much trouble swapping out a Conculer/Sorcerer (excuse the spelling) for say 2 Damage/Heal classes and still being successful. The they still use the lables but there was no class that was ONLY a meat shield, not class that was ONLY good for healing. In WoW terms there was no pure Prot Warrior or Holy Priest option.
