If you are interested I know this Nigerian prince who started his own gaming company and needs help transfering funds out of his country. :)

:) Well, it goes without saying that something like this would be "investor beware"...

Actually compared to the current vetting process for Kickstarters, this might enhance confidence in investing. The SEC will require audited financials, which is something you do not see currently. The devil is in the details, but overall it will be more regulation/safeguarding than current Kickstarts. All of that of coarse does not guarantee an ROI or that whomever gets the money does not suddenly take a loooong vacation in Aruba.

I am sure these games do. This will simply open up a new and different method of funding. Perhaps I should not have given specific examples as this will most likely have an impact on future MMO funding, but maybe not on the examples I gave.

The SEC is looking to allow actual investment via crowdfunding. This might change future Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites to allow direct investment into these companies, instead of the current model of promising future product.

Article here:

http://www.foxbusiness.com/economy-policy/2013/10/23/sec-gives-crowdfunding-green-light/

So we might see indies like Pathfinder Online and The Repopulation (Above & Beyond Tech) able to "double dip" on crowdfunding. They have done Kickstarters, but if this rule is adopted, they could do a second round for actual equity stake in the company. It really opens up a great secondary fundraising source, but at the cost of cutting into future profits.

This regulation change has the potential to drastically alter Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites. Overall I think it creates another great option for companies looking to get off the ground, and I hope these changes are adopted.

I think you missed one; Cash shop + Sub. That to me is a double dip on customers. I understand the 'just cosmetics' argument, but it does not fly with me because developer resources are taken up creating cash shop content. These developers could be working on things or content that you could earn in game.

Edit: Box Price + Sub + Cash Shop + Expansions... Just realized there is more to wow than just sub + cash shop.

Siege system could be interesting...they are definently taking a chance as pvpers tend to not give many chances.  I hope it works out well.  I didn't watch the interview with kayetta...however I can't believe they would put her in a pvp conversation...she's a total carebear.  When I was more involved with the community, this chick did nothing but try to sway the devs to change things from a pvp mindset to a pve mindset, even saying she didn't want a pvp server as it could hurt the numbers on the pve server.  In the end, there was a group of 10 or so of us that actually left the community and game as the community was just so care bear and that's all the devs have had to listen to.  At this point however, I do believe that the lead dev is still sticking to his guns about a hardcore pvp server...but still...total joke to see this chick talking about pvp.

I believe you are thinking of Trixie, not Kayletta.

He might be meshing us together. Regardless, I nearly choked to death laughing when I read this. Thanks for making my day Balin ^_^

Trixie is a carebear as well....to the point she was upset and made a comment to me about a post that there was totally nothing wrong with, but I sent her comment to Josh and he even said she had overstepped our boundries and this game surely does target both groups.  So yes...she's a care bear, but you are to the extreme as you advertise that you aren't a carebear, yet every pvp idea discussed in the forums you want to turn into unicorn love.  (Not really, but you pretending to be a pvper is hilarious.)  Literally looking in the beta forums at a post you made early on responding to one of mine where I basically called you out about how you want a pve game with pvp on the side and finally you shut up.  Obviously I can't post because of NDA...but don't pretend...

Really not  bashing you, just being real...

Yep, unicorn love, that's me. That's why I worked on the siege system and on the hardcore ruleset and I'm planning to roll entirely on hardcore.  You make me giggle so much.

I think you are getting them mixed up, Balin. Kayletta usually references her days in Shadowbane as guidance for her thinking on Repop's PvP, and I would call SB anything but a carebear game. From all the posts I've seen, she's a fan of the PvP elements over the carebear side, but seems to understand the need for both for a successful MMO.

This game will not be a new DF Sir Balin, but a balance that will hopefully get more players to enjoy PvP by easing them with the themeparky elements. See you in DFUW.

I would not discount Darkfall UW just because of player base. Most games have multiple servers and the player base is spread out among them. DFUW has one NA server and one EU server, and on NA there is plenty of opportunity to run into other players if you are looking in the right places. There are several PvP hot spot areas.

The game is not for everyone, but PvP and exploration are 2 of its strong points. If you play on NA, it is plenty active.

Hey all, Just saw this up on repop's sight detailing siege mechanics: http://www.therepopulation.com/index.php/news/109-siege-overview

Looks relatively standard for a game with sieges, but with longer timers for protection post siege (7 days), and 2-3 days before siege goes live. This should help out less PvP inclined players with cities.

Hm... a bit of PR before a kickstarter campaign? Either way interesting ideas.

FTP? Hm... None that I can think of but I'm sure someone will have a decent suggestion. I have never seen much of a player economy in FTP's as they tend to like more transactions at the cash shop ;).

For future releases, The Repopulation is FTP and player run economy. It just won't be out for a while (They said earliest Q4 2013, but beta has not started so I would guess some time in 2014)

Well, it's kind of a dirty way to start, but he could sell some PLEX to get going.

With reference to your specs, I pulled this off their website:

"OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7 / 8

  • CPU: Intel Dual Core @ 2.0 GHz, AMD Dual Core @ 2.0 GHz
  • RAM: XP SP2 – 1 GB / Vista and newer – 2 GB
  • Video: AMD Radeon 2600 XT or NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

Note that older graphics cards such as the NVIDIA 6000 and 7000 series may work but are not officially supported. Please note that Windows 95, 98, ME, NT and 2000 are not supported."

So you might make it on low settings. I believe they have a free trial, so you can test it before you buy. Also, the UI on that game is like no other, and the depth is a bit overwhelming at first, but dig in and I think you will enjoy as it had the best player economy in any game I've played.

If you like WoW and themeparks and accept manual aiming then it might be something for you.

/unsub

That's odd because there are no quests, instances, LFG tools, or linear gameplay elements that would make you associate this game with a themepark. It also has a much flatter progression, so there is no one-shoting anyone.

I get that you are bitter, but man reeeeeeeelax. DF1 is gone.

Well that's one way to play it ;). I'd recommend trying the PvE as it is fun as well; get a couple thousand prowess in the safe zone, get comfortable with the controls a bit and find a guild. The game really picks up when you are playing with others and feel you have a city to call home.
Try Eve. You can play that entire game just in Jita at the market. It is almost entirely a player based economy.

Say what?

The game has no marketplace or player economy yet? What are crafters doing in this game and how do you get armour and stuff? Can you trade one on one at least?

All trading was done 1 on 1, with lots of spam in global for trading. This is a good addition, but could have been implemented differently (like eve to add more options for play style). Either way, still a great patch from AV with this, changes to safe zones, and more ships.

The game is still in alpha.  It is taking foooooorrrrrrevvvvvverrrrrr.

At one time I was like, I can't wait.  Now I'm like, 'are we there yet, yawn'.

As much as I was holding out hope for this one, my interest is moving more toward Archeage lately. Then there is the problem with all the time and energy I've poured into Rift.  When the time comes it will be hard to leave because I'm a one game at a time person.

With regards to time frame, they said they will release when it is ready. Their best guess was Q4 2013. How is it taking forever if we are not even to their best guess release date? I would much rather wait and have a fun, compelling, complete game at launch than a rushed turd.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. The controls will become second nature after some time. I'm at 13k prowess, been playing for about a month more casually than I would like to (free time has been going to wedding planning and my 2nd income-poker).

Don't sweat the prowess to be viable; all that time in the safe zone grind will get you better at combat and controls, which will help immensely when you get into PvP. I just had my first kill the other night, and I have been able to get away as a skirm from a group of 2 trying to pk me.

The grind can be a bitch with gathering and crafting... a lot of time waiting on timers or nodes to run dry. Besides that I am enjoying the heck out of the game. Need to get in a guild though, as that is the major draw of the game and an aspect I've been really looking forward to. I'm just not looking forward to my fiancée making fun of me when I hop into a TS/mumble ;)

Anyone with a guild recommendation please send me a PM. Looking for a good group that won't drop me for playin too casual.

Yea, DFUW is not going to have the level of crafting/building you want. Houses come in 4 (?) varieties/sizes, but they are random loot from chests, not crafted. This applies to all furnishings as well. I have heard that all housing plots (which are predefined plots) are already taken; I have no idea if this is true, but even if they are almost full you would have to get ridiculously lucky to both find a house deed and a plot for it at this point.

I know even less of clan holdings, but I would expect that the clan leads make all decisions on building and placement, so you will most likely not get to participate much beyond donating money and mats...

IDK, try out wurm if you are feeling frisky and don't mind terrible graphics, or as always there is a savior on the horizon (AA, Repop, or EQ).

If it's anything like DF1 (which it probably is), Clan Leaders don't make any decisions regarding the placement of any buildings in a Clan City. You simply need all the materials, select the building you want to create, and the building rises from the ground at a predetermined location (by the developers). The same goes for walls and all that fluff boxes they have.

Ah, I would imagine it is the same in DFUW (I've been playing, but at a relatively casual pace so I have not yet seen a player city in person). Wish it was more like Shadowbane, where you could place everything where and how you wanted. What that game lacked in crafting it made up for in city customization.

Yea, games like DFUW you don't play solo, and are not designed to play solo. It seems you understood this but still decided to play. It's like going into a themepark and complaining about all the quests.

To anyone who tries this game, and is branching out from your normal play style, remember that this is a social PvP centric game. So you need to join a guild to have long term success out of the safe zone.

Embrace that or don't bother playing; you will not be able to force a solo-centric play style onto a Guild v Guild PvP game...

I don't know if he ventured out of the safe zone yet, but I did (at 4k prowess). I was getting bored grinding mobs and refining/crafting, so I figured it was a good time to go out and die :). About 5 minutes out, after checking out some cool ruins etc, I got an arrow to the back... then 3 more. Watched as 2 well equipped skirms took my mount.. I think they left the noob gear I had on my grave.

Wish I would have gotten to explore more, but it was fun anyway. It made me realize I need to find a guild to have some safety in numbers, and that I have a long way to go as a relative casual player to become pvp viable, in gear, prowess, and most importantly in knowing the game/controls.
