Optimistic scenario: NC are concentrating the limited resources of their Western operation on Wildstar & will drag the western version of B&S out of development Hell when Wildstar is either (a) established or (b) crashes and burns within 6 months of launch (pick one depending on your views on that game, I have no opinion either way).

Pessimistic scenario: After what happened to the Western releases of Lineage (currently I believe NC's top earner in Korea -- US servers shut down a few years back), L2 (European operation sold off, NA switched to cash shop model after multiple server merges), Aion (similar scenario to L2 but in a shorter time frame), NC have concluded that porting AAA Korean games to a Western market is not a viable commercial proposition, cut their losses and abandoned the project.

Main point of the animation in any case is promotional for the upcoming Japanese launch of the game. Based on info at the Blade & Soul Dojo fansite & the NCSoft Japan website, the character creation part of the client is already available for download (along with a promotional character design contest), & the game goes live 2014-05-20 with a 3-day "open trial" (or head start -- not sure) immediately prior. (Bear in mind that my knowledge of Japanese is only slightly better than my knowledge of Korean, which is nil: I'm assuming here that "seishiki saabisu START" can be loosely translated "launch").

It's always 9 AM somewhere. And this thread is looking like another case of Poe's Law.

First episode of this aired a few days ago (out of 12 planned iirc) & has been streamed in an English subtitled version on Crunchyroll. I'd guess NC intend to use this as a vehicle to promote the Japanese launch of the game, which thus could be just a few months away.

Seen 1 episode so far; not as bad as I'd feared it would be, but not great either. Some nice character designs, reasonably fluid animation on the fight scenes; plot so far seems somewhat generic martial-arts fare (heroine is former member of assassin clan / mercenary company allied to the Evil Empire, is no on the run, supposedly after killing her master & is apparently out for revenge for something -- we don't know what yet, gets hired to defend mountain village from encroachments of Evil Empire; mayhem ensues); and yes, expect a level of gratuitous fanservice (not quite the Ikki Tousen level, at least).

The Secret World responds to repeated "sexism" complaints in connection with cash shop outfits.

It should take a year to progress, crafting should be in real time + years to create something magical. Monsters shouldn't respawn, once the limited troops of evil are culled you are SOL there is no more experience to gain until a new evil arises a few years later (it takes time to amass evil armies), but by then your characters age progression would kill them off. Dungeons can only be explored once and they are non instanced so literally can only be done once. Even the best players are lucky to reach level 3.

Would this be hardcore enough for the mmo's aren't hard enough crowd?

(This is not really a reply to the above, which I take it is a reductio ad absurdam of one or more of the various "hardcore" positions that get advanced on this site, but takes its cue from a couple of things you say.)

Sometimes I think about what kind of online RPG I'd *really* like to play. Something that would be analogous to being in a "shared universe" pen and paper campaign where you had many groups of PCs running round the world doing things, carving out their own legends, &c., but not so many that the world would be reduced to a barren wasteland with all monsters hunted to extinction within an hour of the servers going live -- in other words, it would not be massively multiplayer. PCs are top predators, for an ecosystem to be -- I hesitate to use the word "realistic" here, but to have the slightest vestige of credibility, there are only so many that can be supported.

So: if the Dark Lord gets defeated, he stays defeated (unless of course, whoever wins the loot roll is foolish enough to actually put on the Black Spiky Helmet of Doom, having missed the hint that on looting said helmet from the Dark Lord's corpse, the face beneath it looked remarkably like the leader of the last band of heroes to ride out against the Dark Lord, who were assumed to have all died). The abomination of having a boss "on farm" would be simply impossible. If a dungeon gets cleared, it will be repopulated before too long, but it will take longer before the denizens have anything worth stealing; whatever repopulated it will be different to what was there before and the same tactics won't work against them.

Ah well, I can dream. What I describe might be doable as a text-based MUD or on a private NWN server; because of the sheer amount of time needed to write interesting content, unless and until AI gets advanced enough, it's not going to be a commercially viable prospect.

Heh, seems like I've started and abandoned 5 or 6 different replies to this thread. For the record, I chose the final, "no endgame," option, but that was on the understanding that what the OP meant by "endgame" was the abomination that has appropriated that term in the MMO-sphere. Also more as an ideal than a belief that a commercially viable MMORPG that I'd actually want to play would ever be made on such a basis -- at least before AI advances to the point of being able to create interesting content as fast as players can chew through it (since I find it hard to get into the style of game where players are just left to chew through each other).

long download

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: retail discs for the 2.0 release (Aion: Assault on Balaurea) can still be found (Amazon UK currently has them for 99p), but the game is now on version 4.5 & has added large amounts of additional content & changes to existing content, so patching it up from a retail disc install, even if possible, will likely take just as long as download from scratch.

In addition to XP boosters, Aion NA has a cash shop item  called "Secret Remedy of Growth" that directly grants XP (20% of a level's worth per hit), these become more expensive the higher your character's level (176 store points per hit for level <20, increasing to 495 for level 50-54 (thus the highest level you can reach using them is 55 -- current cap is 65).

So they're bringing in Paladins...

The name & concept does rather suggest the Holy Liberator, an advanced class from 3rd edition D&D who was more or less a Chaotic Good paladin-type.

Short answer: the mechs ("Bastions") are peculiar to the Aethertech, one of 11 character classes currently in Aion. If you roll any starting class other than a Technist, you don't get to use them. If you roll a Technist, then, on completing the level 9-10 "Ascension" quest you choose to play a Gunslinger (who fights with either dual pistols or a heavy magitech energy weapon called an "Aethercannon") you don't get to use them either.

btw, the "cat face" mech shown as one of the preview options at character creation is one of the rarest in the game at the moment, and sells for ridiculous amounts of ingame currency on the player market.

And while your dislike in general for East Asian fantasy-art is a matter of personal aesthetic taste which I wouldn't presume to argue, I would seriously question that "running screaming" from "a schoolgirl in a giant cutesy kitten robot" is really a sign of maturity.

"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." -- C.S. Lewis.

EDITED SOME MORE TO ADD: Very short answer: No.

OK a quick FYI if you've not been following this game: EA's role in it was limited to marketing & distribution of boxed copies plus some digital download sales through their Origin platform. EA did not, and does not, develop or run the game, & it can be bought directly from Funcom's website without giving EA any money.

It is possible you might dislike the game and choose not to play it, but choosing not to even try it because of who made and distributed the boxes seems . . . well, petty, frankly.

And furthermore, in my opinion, Carthage must be destroyed.

Nice riposte, even Cato the Senil...khm... the Elder would be proud reading that one :)

On reflection it was not entirely appropirate; as I recall, Marcus Porcius Cato Senior eventually got his way on that one.

My point was that Daltanious has been making posts to this effect again and again and again and again in comments on news articles on TSW. There is a place for discussion of the relative merits of limited hotbar systems a la TSW and the original Guild Wars, where you select a comparatively small number of skills from a fairly large repertoire, as against games like LOTRO and Aion (I cite those as they're the ones I've played the most) where you have a smaller total pool of skills but can have all of them usable at once, even if this means have 5 or 6 hotbars with 60+ keybinds for everything; this isn't it. A general thread in the Pub, sure; even one of the periodic "why I think TSW's combat sucks" threads here.

Suppose I were to (for example) post a comment on every other news article on TERA and ask: "does this game have tab targetting yet?", how long would it be before I got reported for trolling?

What is being asked for is essentially for TSW's entire combat and skill system to be torn down and rebuilt from scratch. This is not going to happen: 1) Funcom (largely due to TSW itself not being as much of a commercial success as they hoped, which is a whole other can of worms) not having the dev staff, and 2) experience suggesting that making that level of radical systems change to an established game tends to alienate current players more than it attracts new ones. Just look at the Pavlovian response to the phrases "Combat Update" and "New Game Experience" on this site, for example.

By the way, TSW currently has 13 hotbar slots, not 7 (7 main actives + 1 auxilliary + 5 items).

EDIT: wrong thread.
Not as far as I'm aware, but the base game including 1 month's sub can be picked up pretty cheap now (15 UKP for PC / ~8 UKP for PS3 from Amazon at the moment, for example).

This is true, but trivially true. 90% of everything is crap.

DAoC, a WoW-clone?  Did I just read that correctly?  You do realize that DAoC came before WoW?

Anyways, perfect discussion to drop this new hope for Sandboxes that I've been following for a while:

No, I think whoever said that meant to say that ESO's PvE content was identical to WoW's. Not having played ESO at all, or WoW past the starter zone, I won't comment on that claim.

Lastly, what is a success? SWTOR has proven to be a success. Is your definition of success for an MMO that you personally like it irregardless of financial stability?

Well the general use of the word "fail" on these forums as applied to MMOs seems to be "I personally dislike this game," so . . .

There is really only one thing keeping me out of this game. The broken Gear Manager.

Last time I logged in, it was still crap.

Has this been fixed?

That depends.  When did you log on last.  They have pretty much fixed the Gear Manager now I believe.

Gear Manager is about as fixed as is reasonably practical. Upgrading a weapon or talisman will still cause the manager to "forget" it but the only way to fix this is to either completely re-code how the game handles itemization, or to run a search and replace through all saved builds every time you use the assembly window to upgrade / reglyph / signet a piece of gear.

This is just my opinion, but I think the reason the term is misused (by people who should know better) is because there are people who believe that they can do whatever they want, say whatever they want, and define words and phrases to mean whatever they want. And they believe that everyone else in the world needs to accept what they think and cater to them.

As regards the defining of terms part, you've just described a sizable part of the regular posters on this site.

"I don't know what you mean by 'glory,' " Alice said.

Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't—till I tell you. I meant 'there's a nice knock-down argument for you!' "

"But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument'," Alice objected.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."

(Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll)

All too often we find people declaring some game they personally dislike to be "not an MMORPG" or "not a real MMO" for the most arbitrary and contrived reasons, or declaring it to be "a single player game" while simultaneously bemoaning the fact that there is nothing to do at "endgame" apart from grinding 5/6 person dungeons or zerg PvP.

Language here is used as much as a weapon as a tool for communication.
