You may be in luck. Seems #9 (basic version w/o the extra costumes) is currently on 50% off in the ingame store. No idea how long this is for.

In other words, when the game's entire combat system is torn down and rebuilt from scratch. Which won't happen.

I have no doubt this game will sell. Unfortunatly I don't see this obvious Borderlands ripoff lasting more then a month or two. To even call this game an MMORPG is a gross exaggeration.

No one ever said it was.

Not that I disagree, but .......whatttt???   I believe a few people here are of that belief or we would not be talking about it.

The argument was largely over whether it could be considered an MMO game at all which is made problematic by the fact that even among folks who would agree on excluding League of Legends, World of Tanks, Diablo 3 &c. from that category there is no consensus on a cut off point for a game being "massively multiplayer" or not (and I've not been following Destiny closely enough to have an opinion on whether it fits my own eccentric definition or not).

The publishers preferred not to call it an MMO probably on the basis that a significant or at least vocal section of their target market (console shooter players) have similar opinions about "MMOs" and their players to those we frequently see expressed here on the subject of console shooters and their players.

Also as has been pointed out the figure quoted is copies shipped to retailers, & there is no guarantee these will all sell. This game is being sold in supermarkets that don't normally carry console games, for instance.

I m kinda amused to notice that this article only mentions games that have actually closed. Lack of courage so you don't displease publishers from MMORPG that are running yet ? Sounds like that.

Or possibly that on this site pronouncing a game "doomed" that has not, in fact, closed down owes more to one's personal dislike for it or simple trolling than any objective considerations?

Fair enough criticisms except that the game is a lot less instanced than most other modern MMOs. Nothing in the open world is instanced.

OP like many other people on this site appears to confuse division of the game world into zones with instancing (multiple copies of individual zones, either private to a player / party a la GW1, or dynamically created due to limitations of the game engine or for server side balancing (TSW for instance)).

ARR uses instanced copies of bits of the game world for some solo encounters in main story or class quests, but for most purposes there is one copy of each zone per server, which can result in somewhat degraded game performance when a few hundred people zone in to fight a world boss, for instance.

Source? Last I heard -- albeit this was some months back -- Trion had no plans of different ruleset servers & far as I can tell the game is pretty much set up around faction / guild / territory control PvP; certainly the current servers in OB are not distinguished by ruleset.
Well, (a) Massively has been covering non-MMO online multiplayer games for ~3 years now ("Not so Massively" column) and (b) the article linked in the OP is arguing generally against blindly taking marketing departments' word for whether or not a particular game is or is not an MMO, and specifically in the case of Destiny that given the target audience (console shooter players) the marketing peeps have reasons for not wanting to call it an MMO game.

oh well, Tera became F2P in 2013 January -  February worldwide, so that might be rather 2012 data.

<snip>

If you read the microprint and look at the other games in that list it's clear they're counting "freemium" (i.e., free to play in some for or another but with an optional subscription that either removes F2P restrictions, grants a monthly supply of item mall points, or whatever) titles as well as sub-only games like WoW and EVE.

TERA NA (idk about Korea / Japan / Taiwan / EU) still has a sub option, called "Elite membership" or some such.

If you want an easy reason to pass on the game, just keep in mind that you cant modify AT ALL your body. Same race, same size, same build. In 2014, that is such a dissapointment, sure its a small detail but still.

The game is still good, overall.

I thought I saw a save appearance button though?  If so, that's a great feature to have (even some new MMOs like ESO do not).

Yes you can, not to mention that what he said is not true. You can change many things by using the cogs in the char creation window. He probably used one of the preset models..Not sure what he meant by same race? There are 4 races atm. Same build? There are 120 classes.

It means that for each race / gender combination, there is one body model without even a linear scale slider. There is a great deal of facial customisation, more so than in any game I've played with the possible exception of Aion, but you can't change anything below the neck. To be honest if this is enough to drive you away from the game you were probably not going to stick around it for very long anyway.

Is it just me or has this GoT mmorpg been developed with zero regard for the mmorpg community? No nothing directed our way. Idk if it's a bad thing or not, but yeah.

Um, as far as I know there's no GoT MMO in development. This game is a single player RPG-lite in the vein of the Walking Dead/Wolf Among Us games.

Not sure why MMORPG.com is covering this game at all actually now that you mention it. :)

There was a GoT MMO game in development ("Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms") that was announced in 2012 but it appears to be vapourware.

And the single-player game isn't, as far as I can tell, being covered by MMORPG.com except in so far as a user made this thread, and in the "General [i.e., non-MMORPG] Gaming" section; article linked in the OP is on Gamespot.

So saw they were offering a 2 week trial to FFXIV,  downloaded the launcher.. selected English,  go to register my free account and the text turned all japanese on me.   Cant figure out what the hell i type or where, or how i change it too english...

Working as intended?

Probably not intended, no. There have been occasional glitches recently with system messages in the game appearing in Japanese regardless of the client language setting. But you can change the launcher display language, provided you're not logged in, using the drop-down in the bottom left corner of the launcher (next to the "meteor" logo).

EDIT: Had to delete half the post as Japanese text turned into rows of question marks after hitting "post" despite being perfectly legible in "Preview," thus rendering the whole thing less than useful.

Wait . . . so Facebook, &c., is not "really" social . . . but forced grouping in an MMORPG is?

Anyone else notice the tension there?

Well if the ponies aren't red file a lawsuit. No govt agency required. I can see how the idea of not being dependent on the government to make your own observations and determiations might be frightening though.

In socialist countries like Britain and Canada, the court system is inaccessible and such lawsuits would further engorge the system. So the government has several departments to disengorge the court systems (which for some cases are still well over 3 years of waiting just to stand before a judge, only so the other side can delay it further to "take notice of the charges and prepare a proper defence")

"Socialist"

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. We haven't had a government even pretend to be socialist in the UK since the 1970s, or a credible opposition party claim to be since the 1990s.

They have free health care, they are socialists :/

I am not sure how it is in the UK, but labling Canada as a whole as "socialist", makes me think that neo doesn't fully understand how the Canadian confederation works. Most social services are run by provintial governments, and the amount of social services per provance ranges considerbly. You have BC, where aside form federal health care, is less socialist than most US states...yet Quebec on the other hand, is almost communist.

Well, what I understand by "socialism" is something like the clause that used to be in the constitution of the Labour Party in the UK until they threw it out in the 1990s, and talked about "secur[ing] for the workers by hand or brain the full fruits of their labour through the common ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange" or words to that effect;. They made a few half-hearted attempts at actually doing it, but since 1979 most of the industries / infrastructure / utilities companies that were in government ownership have been sold off.

But I should probably stop here, this thread is already degenerating into political flameage.

All I can say is if OP thinks the top three games on that list (the only ones I've played, can't comment on Rift or WS) are "clones" of the same thing then OP is using a private definition of the word "clone." [insert "You keep using that word" meme image here]

I just notice that all MMORPG i play (and most MMORPGs out here) always let player start at level 1

It not like i complain but i just find it funny.

Why don't let start at level YY and let player custom stats and skill at character create instead of start game at level 1 ?

Your thought ?

I believe there was a rules option in one iteration of Dungeons & Dragons that allowed a player character to start at level 0. I don't think it caught on. But the custom of using "1" to denote the first point on an ordinal scale long predates MMORPGs.

Actually, thinking about it, while TSW has no single numerical "level" for your character, gear QL and all skill tracks start at 0 in that game.

Pretty much what Rylah said. Buying the standard edition lets you play the main storyline as it stood at launch plus the "Venetian Agenda" mission, and all non main story mission content prior to #5 (#5 was included in base game if you bought it before the end of December 2012). There is also a "Massive Edition" sold on Steam which includes issues #5, #6 and #7.

Issues #5, #6 and #7 are sidestory mission arcs which fill out aspects of the main storyline. #6 and #7 in particular make little sense until after you've completed the respective arcs (Egypt and Transylvania) of the main story.

To continue the storyline past the start of the Venice arc you need to buy #9. The paid DLC part of #8 consists entirely of extra maps and difficulty levels for Scenarios, an aspect of the game which a lot of people hate, so you might want to skip that.

Additionally there are two "Sidestories" DLC mission packs, each costing slightly less than a full Issue, and consisting of 4 or 5 "main" missions each.

Game seems to be well populated & has an active community. Local zone chats which are bound to a single "dimension" (what in other games are called servers) tend to be quiet once you're past the first zone; however you can group cross-dimension & there are a number of game-wide chat channels you can join such as #sanctuary & #noobmares which are great for grouping for missions & dungeons.

EDITED TO ADD: Both katanas and Uzis exist as weapon skins in the game, however Uzis are counted as pistols. Blade / pistol can be a viable build for soloing, possibly also for dungeon DPS (I haven't tried it).

If they have 2M subs, they are not players from the west.

Why would you say that? I'm on a US server and is full with players here.

Because of its huge following in Asia. Even FFXI to this date gets majority of its population from Asia. On top of that add consoles popularity in japan and lack of good MMO options avilable to them. So yes FFXIV is doing great thanks to Asian players.

and this is bad somehow?

I don't like throwing the word "racism" around loosely, so instead I'll say that for some posters on this site "Asian" seems to be less a geographical designation and more a vague snarl-word.

Has FF XIV actually released in China or Korea yet anyway?

In any case, it's been repeatedly stated (e.g. in the recent interview with the game director on this site) that the "2 million" figure is "registered accounts" and since it is highly implausible that everyone who ever played the game is still subbed, the number of actual subscribers is probably somewhat less.

What a bunch whiny brats.

You can also get into Tokyo by doing the investigations in the sidestories pack.

If that's who I think it is from the TSW forums they don't like scenarios to the point where they won't group up for scenarios, won't be carried through scenarios, and won't spend money on the Side Stories mission pack so they won't have to run scenarios.

. . . and responded to every attempt at help by flaming and insulting until people lost patience, the thread degenerated and got locked by the mods. It does appear to be the same poster.

[EDIT: in case anyone cares, http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=79747]

But yeah, you could have made enough token currency to get into Tokyo by running 1-2 Scenarios A MONTH between #8 and #9 launch (I was being woefully over-optimistic in my comments last November where I put it at "one or two a week"). Probably less if you grouped. Or bought the Sidestories: Further Analysis DLC (which is worth it in its own right for the missions therein) at which point you could get the forged seal with ingame currency.

K, i cant find definite answer so - do i need to buy Issue to go to Tokyo or just i can go to Tokyo but i get extra missions when i buy Issue?

You need to buy Issue #9 to access Tokyo zone at all.

Paid DLC part of the update includes:

  • Access to Kaidan (Tokyo) zone.
  • Main story missions from Preludes & Intrigues through to Spiral (nominally 8 missions though 2 are pretty much filler, as in "go to this location, talk to this NPC").
  • One Action mission and a bunch of side missions (I've not counted all of them).
  • Access to AEGIS system (which is only any use against Tokyo mobs anyway).
Two "Sidestories" DLC packs with additional action, sabotage & investigation missions in the Kaidan zone are planned. No release date has been given.
