Initially when you first start the game you need to follow the main storyline for unlocks to the game and do your typical quests.  Fates (Dynamic Events of Sorts) can be done solo or in a party of up to 8 people.  Dungeons are usually for 4 people.  Raid and Primal Groups are usually 8 near end game.

For leveling up, it could be an option if you formed FATE groups with full parties since you all share the EXP.

Thanks for the quick response.

When can you start doing fates, dungeons, primal groups, and raids?  Are there no 8-man dungeons?

Can you start any of these from level 1 and would it be a fun way to level up?

You can start doing FATEs pretty much as soon as you get out of your starting city into an adventure zone; their nominal level ranges from 3 to 49 (50 for some rare-spawning world boss events).

"Dungeons" in ARR are with a couple of exceptions (both at the end of the original main story quest chain) 4-player instances.  8 player full party instances are all max level content.  Dungeons start at level 15, in general you get a new one unlocked every 3 or 4 levels, mostly through the main story quest.

Three of the Primal fights have 4 player "normal mode" versions which you do at levels 20, 34 and 44 as part of the main story quest.  The rest of the Primal and other "trial" fights are level 50 content for 8-player parties.

There are two sets of raids; Coil of Bahamut series which is designed for a single 8-player full party, and Crystal Tower series which is designed for an alliance of three full parties.  Again this is all max level stuff that you have to finish the original main story to unlock.  Crystal Tower is easier as it is tuned to give a lot of margin for error, has a lower gear-check element & most fights can be explained in a few sentences.  Not being part of a raid guild or static I've only done the first few parts of Coil so can't really comment on it.

FATEs and dungeon runs are viable ways to level up; whether or not they're fun I guess depends on what you like.

Do I have to turn something on for chat? I never seem to see anything from other players. My char is only level 10 at the moment so I haven't missed out on anything I guess.

There are no global chat channels. Zone chat (/shout, pale orange by default) can be pretty quiet particularly in low level adventure zones. It should be on by default -- you can change settings, including what channels go to what tabs, in the "Character Configuration" windows under "Log Window Settings" (speech bubble icon). Also if you've accidentally switched to the "Event" chat tab, that shows only NPC dialogue.

I started just a month ago. I'll give it a few more to see. It doesn't grab me really, but it seems very polished. The quests are quite dull so far, really just kill quests. I've not seen any social aspects to the game at all (other than seeing other players around). Graphics are great, music's great, performance is great. One thing I really dislike though is the lack of voice acting in the cut scenes. I presume the Japanese version has it? It just seems very weird.

Re: voice acting.

Only main quest cutscenes are voiced, and those incompletely -- in many cases the vocals will just cut out halfway through a scene. This may have been due to budget limitations, scheduling issues or a desire to keep the amount of voice data in the game under control -- I don't know.

The default client download includes voice tracks for all 4 supported languages & you can switch between them in game.

If setting the voice track to something other than the language you set for the game client, bear in mind that the localisation teams were given a pretty free hand in translating stuff (hence we can get all the bad puns and pop culture references in quest names and the like in the English version, for instance) so the text you see won't necessarily be a reasonable translation of what you hear.

I saw the gold man you have to kill to do nightmares walking around in Trans too....he was green for friendly npc though...are you supposed to follow him?

Yeah, the Gatekeeper walking through a zone is an indication that the golem is going to spawn there soon . . . follow him (& call out the sighting in #event chat if you want people to turn up) & you'll eventually see him summon Samsu Nasiru (the gold golem world boss).

As for class recommendations, the classes are very archetypal, so go with what you know you like from other RPGs.  One character can level every class given enough time, so experiment, try things out, and never feel like you get stuck or locked into anything in particular.

If you like tanking, Paladin is a sword/shield mitigation type while Warrior is a high HP damage sponge.  Tanks are always needed, so if you want to be able to find groups very quickly, I'd suggest one of those two.  Healers are next-most-needed.  White Mage is your reactive AoE healer with big healbombs, while Scholar is more prevention/support oriented with some shields and a pet that casts buffs and spot heals.  Monk is about fast melee combos, Dragoon is a slower heavy hitter, Summoner uses DoTs and a pet, Black Mage has big AoE spell damage, and Bard does a little of everything.  If you prefer to mostly solo, Summoner and Scholar are very effective for that.

To be clear: while practically you will be probably be playing one of these nine jobs (or the forthcoming tenth, Ninja) for pretty much all combat activities much above level 30, you don't start out as any of them, but in one of 8 (a ninth being added in 2.4) "classes." After you level this class to 30 and have done the class-specific story quest chain (there may be other requirements, not sure), you can take a quest at your combat class guild which unlocks the corresponding job.

  • Gladiator --> Paladin (sword & shield tank)
  • Pugliist --> Monk (light armour melee DPS)
  • Marauder --> Warrior (absorption tank)
  • Lancer --> Dragoon (medium armour melee DPS)
  • Archer --> Bard (ranged physical DPS / support)
  • Conjurer --> White Mage (healer)
  • Thaumaturgist --> Black Mage (nuker range DPS)
  • Arcanist --> Summoner (pet class / DOT based DPS / support) or Scholar (healer)
I'd second the recommendation of Arcanist for soloing purposes, and once you've unlocked Scholar you can also queue for dungeons as a healer, tho' I'd agree with the assessment that White Mage is easier to play as main-heal.

If you (a) don't like doing quests and (b) are mainly interested in PvP then I would be very reluctant to recommend TSW to you at all.

In regard to your other question, "level cap" is a somewhat nebulous concept in this game but you can max all main weapon and talisman skill tracks and obtain all main weapon skills without buying any of the "Issues" or other paid DLC.

I have to say as a long years Lineage 2 player that all i am waiting for from NC is Lineage eternal (and i have been waiting for it since they announced it). I know that they will probably announce something at GStar but i thought that Blade and soul and Lineage Eternal were on similar timelines. If B&S are releasing soon in 2015 does that mean LE is almost here too ?

LE according to Steparu and a couple of other places, citing an NC financial presentation earlier this year) is having its first CBT this winter coming. B&S though released over two years ago in Korea, last year in China and earlier this year in Japan so I'm not sure where you get "similar timelines" from.

I was mainly responding to "Archeage will kill B&S" / "Black Desert will kill B&S" type comments.

Completely agree, these games aren't going to kill anything.

Hopefully they flourish and don't kill themselves.

I also agree, and don't wish ill on B&S so hopefully you didn't take my comment as such. I merely wanted to say I think B&S has taken too long in coming to the Western market and I don't think it has much to offer.

I have played it and all I can say is - it's pretty, it's well animated and the story is ok. At least when I played there seemed to be open world pvp as after level 30 (ish?) I was getting ganked by reds and hadn't flagged specifically. Hence I was making an ArcheAge comparison, but perhaps I am wrong.

Ah OK. I stand corrected, I had not been following this game closely, my understanding which could well be in error or based on things which have changed was that at a certain point in the story / levelling you aligned with a faction, and flagged for PvP by wearing that faction's "colours" as it were.

No idea why someone would play Blade & Soul at this point. It offers nothing new and ArcheAge open world pvp is much better.

B & S was never really up against games like Archeage / Black Desert in terms of its core appeal anyway, far as I can tell the game is pitched as a story-centred themepark with faction-based flagged PvP. That in and of itself might limit its potential market and will certainly get it flamed on this site, but with or without Archeage's Western launch it would never have drawn that many people looking for Lineage type OW-PvP.

But every game "limits" its potential market because of the decisions made in the making of the game. For instance:

it would never have drawn that many people looking for Lineage type OW-PvP.

If the game did have Lineage type "Open world pvp" Then that would most certainly limit the potential market.

If anything, having a story based themepark with flagged pvp will probably appeal to people who like theme parks and people who jump into games, play them for a bit and then jump out.

Point taken. I have no particular interest in AA, Black Desert &c, & mostly do play "story-centred themepark" games with PvP shunted off into arenas / dedicated warzones where it can be safely ignored (FF XIV: ARR, Secret World, &c.) & probably will play B&S if / when it finally manifests in EU / NA.

I was mainly responding to "Archeage will kill B&S" / "Black Desert will kill B&S" type comments.

Agreed. Someone can spout the most ignorant garbage and, despite every post explaining the contrary, will continue to repeat the same nonsense over and over until someone finally breaks. You break, you get banned. It's pretty much the rule here. Your choices? Here's some:
  • Wait out the ban and return to business as usual
  • Suck it up and realize shouting people down gets you everywhere here, facts and history don't
  • Start stacking the blocked list. As soon as you see one of those names (their posts are hidden) in a thread you are in, realize it's about to go south and move on to another thread.
  • Troll. Spout the dumbest, most naive ridiculousness you can think of. When presented with ANY counter argument, stick to your guns. False dichotomy, argumentum ad populum, straw men, red herrings work well here. If what you're looking for is a threadnaught, use MMOExposed's favorite, The Non-Sequitur. You can bank on that last one. It's good for at least two pages and a ban (not for you, of course - you're the victim here).
Well, see y'all in a week.

LOL!   You just trolled the trolls.  So I guess that would make you a white troll as opposed to the black ones.

(Col. Kurtz voice): "And they call me a troll. What do you call it, when the trolls troll the trolls?"

I see you found the quest NPC you were looking for, but just to be clear, the quests you need to do before you can go through the blue portal above the fortress form a different chain which you get at level 25.

I was somewhat hopeful around this game . . . 2 years or so ago. The Western release has been in development Hell for so long that even assuming there is a working English client & it was just held back for marketing reasons until Wildstar either (a) became established or (b) crashed and burned, by the time it releases in NA / EU the game is likely to look & feel somewhat dated.

You may be in luck. Seems #9 (basic version w/o the extra costumes) is currently on 50% off in the ingame store. No idea how long this is for.

In other words, when the game's entire combat system is torn down and rebuilt from scratch. Which won't happen.

I have no doubt this game will sell. Unfortunatly I don't see this obvious Borderlands ripoff lasting more then a month or two. To even call this game an MMORPG is a gross exaggeration.

No one ever said it was.

Not that I disagree, but .......whatttt???   I believe a few people here are of that belief or we would not be talking about it.

The argument was largely over whether it could be considered an MMO game at all which is made problematic by the fact that even among folks who would agree on excluding League of Legends, World of Tanks, Diablo 3 &c. from that category there is no consensus on a cut off point for a game being "massively multiplayer" or not (and I've not been following Destiny closely enough to have an opinion on whether it fits my own eccentric definition or not).

The publishers preferred not to call it an MMO probably on the basis that a significant or at least vocal section of their target market (console shooter players) have similar opinions about "MMOs" and their players to those we frequently see expressed here on the subject of console shooters and their players.

Also as has been pointed out the figure quoted is copies shipped to retailers, & there is no guarantee these will all sell. This game is being sold in supermarkets that don't normally carry console games, for instance.

I m kinda amused to notice that this article only mentions games that have actually closed. Lack of courage so you don't displease publishers from MMORPG that are running yet ? Sounds like that.

Or possibly that on this site pronouncing a game "doomed" that has not, in fact, closed down owes more to one's personal dislike for it or simple trolling than any objective considerations?

Fair enough criticisms except that the game is a lot less instanced than most other modern MMOs. Nothing in the open world is instanced.

OP like many other people on this site appears to confuse division of the game world into zones with instancing (multiple copies of individual zones, either private to a player / party a la GW1, or dynamically created due to limitations of the game engine or for server side balancing (TSW for instance)).

ARR uses instanced copies of bits of the game world for some solo encounters in main story or class quests, but for most purposes there is one copy of each zone per server, which can result in somewhat degraded game performance when a few hundred people zone in to fight a world boss, for instance.

Source? Last I heard -- albeit this was some months back -- Trion had no plans of different ruleset servers & far as I can tell the game is pretty much set up around faction / guild / territory control PvP; certainly the current servers in OB are not distinguished by ruleset.
Well, (a) Massively has been covering non-MMO online multiplayer games for ~3 years now ("Not so Massively" column) and (b) the article linked in the OP is arguing generally against blindly taking marketing departments' word for whether or not a particular game is or is not an MMO, and specifically in the case of Destiny that given the target audience (console shooter players) the marketing peeps have reasons for not wanting to call it an MMO game.
