Not quite. Some instanced content -- dungeons, most guildhests (instanced fights that are basically practice for dungeon type mechanics) and the first three "trials" (instanced single boss fights) are limited to 4 players. For all open world content and other instanced content (raids and all other "trials") max party size is 8.

EDIT: to clear up any confusions that may have been caused between this & the post below: 3 8-player full parties can form an "alliance" & one raid series -- the easier one -- requires such a 24-player alliance.

1. Group content is based around tank / heal / DPS trinity -- each of the ten combat jobs is assigned to one role & there are no pure support classes; CC abilities (sleep / stun / silence / root / slow) & group / ally buffs are split between classes in all 3 groups.

2. For much of the game, both levelling & at max level there are strong advantages to playing as a group. However, players are initially (up to level 15) split up between 3 regions / starting cities according to their initial combat class & the main story and class / job quests include a number of solo sections.

3. No. Most dungeons below max level are unlocked through the main story quest. Max level dungeons require completion of the main story quest before they can be unlocked. Grinding dungeons is one of the better way of levelling alt jobs especially if you're doing so as a group & so don't have to wait for a tank in the Duty Finder (auto-group tool).

4. Not sure I understand the question. Or rather, I don't know what you personally consider "worthwhile" & what quest rewards you want.

5. Wolrd zones do not uses instances / channels / phases; everyone in a given zone on a given server is in the same copy of the zone & can theoretically see & chat with each other. This can lead to some performance degradation when 200+ people zone in to fight a world boss.

Some main story and class / job quests use instanced copies of small areas of the world zones. Quest based phasing is limited to individual friendly NPCs & interactable objects, so you might see one NPC in a particular place if you're on a certain point in the story quest, while other players not on that quest might not see them.

There are 17 adventure zones with varying level ranges; compared to many other MMOs zones are somewhat small and cramped (not on the FF XIII level of corridor-like, not that that's much of a compliment). More are to be added in the upcoming expansion.

The zones used for Free Company (guild) & player housing use persistent instanced copies of the 3 maps (1 attached to each starter city).

EDITED TO ADD: As I understand it, what PvP there is in this game is confined to instanced arenas / battlegrounds.

So if i had bought the base game when the game launched and nothing since then...

The base game includes DLC 1-4 (you receive 1200 FC points after doing 30 quests) US$ 10,19

- Issue 1: Unleashed
- Issue 2: Digging Deeper
- Issue 3: The Cat God
- Issue 4: Big Trouble in the Big Apple
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything DLC 5 and up needs to be purchased. Look for the package deals like:

The Secret World: Massive Edition (http://store.steampowered.com/app/261130/) US$ 23,99

- Issue 5: The Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn
- Issue 6: The Last Train to Cairo
- Issue 7: A Dream to Kill
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are buying the Massive Edition, consider buying issue 8 with the 1200 FC points..

- Issue 8: The Venetian Agenda
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because the next package deal includes 9, 10 and 11 as The Fall of Tokyo pack US$ 29.99

- Issue  9: The Black Signal
- Issue 10: Nightmares in the Dream Palace
- Issue 11: Reaping the Whirlwind

Now this last pack is Funcom direct, so it might be offered cheaper through Steam later.
Also note this is the new area Tokyo which requires you to have higher QL gear to play.

Perfect, thats great info, thanks dude

If you bought the base game any time before the sub requirement was dropped you already own Issue #5.

Issue #8 consists solely of 2 extra maps and 1 extra difficulty mode for Scenarios (similar sort of concept to LOTRO's Skirmishes but with rather less variety at the moment), an aspect of TSW which a significant or at least vocal part of the player base hates. You don't need to own the paid DLC to do the corresponding arc of the main story; I'd suggest not spending money or points on it until you've run a few to see what you think about them.

Interesting. If this is true I might actually check this game out, I'd been largely ignoring it in the belief it was going to be heavily focussed on open world guild war / territory control PvP.

Clicking the "sign up for beta" button on the site in any case generates a message referring to the ongoing "closed" beta, so if they want more people for later CBT sessions than they've sold founder packs you might get in through that.

It's also not clear from what's posted there how many more CBT sessions are planned before open beta, or whether this "open beta" is going to be effectively a headstart launch (i.e., cash shop open and no further character wipes).

Not sure whether to file this under an April Fool's prank or advertising stunt (for various cash shop emotes), but after last year's PR disaster this game's management are probably trying to play it safe:

Indeed it could lead to further crime, but could is not 'does in the majority of cases'. Taking one detectives view and inflating that to a premise on how cyber crime works is a bit of a stretch.

This is article is here because they could mention WoW and get parents worried, that sells papers.

The confusion about WoW mechanics either shows the detective has not got a clue, or the journalist misunderstood. I imagine its the later.

I think it's more a case of the detective (over) simplifying stuff for a non-specialist audience, and mentioning World of Warcraft rather than (for example) EVE Online as something that the journalists & their readers are more likely to have heard of. This was on the front page of today's Independent too, btw. Guessing it was a slow news day.

EDIT: in fact, it was the Independent's story originally: Online version.

Without any inside information no one can tell you if Turbine is in mood to renew the license or that they would be even allowed to renew it.

"Turbine's PR company states that they have extended their license agreements with Tolkien Enterprises for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit until 2014, with the rights to claim them all the way up to 2017 if they so choose."

Source.

This means that Turbine is still on it's original (2008) license and that Turbine has claimed the rights for an other 3 years after they ended in 2014. This would raise questions if/why Tolkien Enterprises didn't renew the license in 2014 for an other period.

I personally think that Tolkien Enterprises didn't renew the license after the (bad) turn the story in LotRo made and getting out of sync with the actual lore. With WB now being done with all the Tolkien movies (Lord of the Rings & Hobbit trilogies), there's no real need for Tolkien Enterprises to let WB/Turbine stick to the license to keep LotRo going...

IMO Middle Earth Enterprises (formerly Tolkien Enterprises), a.k.a. the Saul Zaentz Corporation care less about the lore than the long-term profitability of The Hobbit / Lord of the Rings as a brand; these are the people who let one of their licensees run virtual gambling slot machines purportedly based on a book by a Roman Catholic moralist with a fairly unsubtle text about the corrupting and destructive effect of the desire for wealth. So basically, whether or not the license gets renewed is dependent on whether or not Turbine / Warner think the game is going to be sufficiently profitable long-term to be prepared to pay SZC whatever they're asking.

So it could barely hold on to it's subscribers for 12 months before it had to change the revenue model. The game must be even worse now than when i played it in open beta. Still not worth my money though.

Release Date: April 4, 2014  ~  B2P/CashShop Date: March 17, 2015

Is that a new record?

No. The Secret World ran for less than 6 months as box price + required sub + cosmetic cash shop before switching to box price + paid DLC + cosmetic & "convenience" cash shop + optional sub granting store points &c.  The outline description of the perks of the ESO optional sub seems slightly more generous than TSW's (where subscribers need to buy DLCs using their store point allowance, albeit at a slight discount).

ESO even if it wasn't able to sustain a sub required model will hopefully at least continue to do well enough, esp. with forthcoming console launch, that content updates won't slow to the crawl rate we saw in TSW.

Currently at 400 yes / 447 no; but looking at more recent comments, those who voted "no" also includes:

  • people who don't want to play an open-world PvP game* ("Sorry, am too disgusting carebear for this game"; "once again a 'Zombie survival horror game' is more dependently focused on PVP gameplay than any actual zombie survival")
  • people who have no interest in the subject matter / genre ("Zombie apocalypse games aren't exactly my cup of tea"; "The world is on a Zombie kick. So tired of it all."; "It has zombies, so that is a big NOPE! from me."),
  • people who just hate SOE for whatever reason.

* Leaving aside that PvE servers are apparently a thing in this game.

So close to being a great game/ mmo, setting and the quests, story are perfect but it just falls short in other neglected area's.

I could put up with the character animations as for me they come straight from conan and can not see much difference except more ugly character models.

But why I cant stay in the game is the same as the majority, and its the terrible combat system, also the over populated mobs which just makes it repetitive and not fun to explore.

Sometimes I want to go back and give it another go as I wish they could just sort out the combat and I would love this game, I want to love it, but then I check the forums to see if the combat has been changed, when i find out it has not then thats enough to not bother.

The date before the post above.....10/20/14 6:25:52 PM

2 month old necro.

Did TSW really scare the ESO fans that much that they are posting in 2 month old threads just to bash.

TSW is doing something right.

Maybe you want to add the OP to your conspiracy theory? since his last five or six posts on mmorpg.com were all about ESO, he too is clearly part of the evil ESO-ZOS-NWO-TLA plot to do down Funcom and The Secret World. Which is more evidence than there is for Zeplini being an "ESO fan" (he posted once about the game in 2013 expressing gladness that it was to be a sub rather than cash shop based game).

May be all new accounts should be discounted. One way to be sure.

Except that doing this would negate a large point of the "contest," certainly from the site management / owners' point of view.

My greater concern is will BD be able to do a better job controlling hackers, botters and other cheaters better than XLGames did with AA.

History of Korean made MMORPG's doesn't point to it.

Once your entire playerbase requires a social security number tied to an online account amazingly hacking goes way down - which is why security is so lacking in Korean MMOs. This is a valid concern to me as well.

What MMO or online game requires you to enter your SS #? I must have missed them.

Probably because -- assuming the info in your profile to be correct -- you don't live & play online games in South Korea. I think the point is meant to be that Korean game companies require an account to be associated with a valid social security number, at which point, even in a non-sub game, getting a new account after being banned for hacking, botting or w/e is not simply a matter of acquiring a new throwaway email address but essentially requires criminal identity fraud -- so it might still happen, sure, but not on the scale that we see when these games get exported.

Well, that escalated quickly ;-)

Vote is now on the TSW launcher too.

Really? Do you have a steam store link, please? I don't see it on offering, and when searching at games published by Funcom, it's not even there. Maybe it's because my zone, and Steam doesn't offer it to my area? I looked at the Funcom's store and it's 29.99 Euros, ATM.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/215280/

There you go :)

Edit: you might want to think of buying the massively edtion for 20,39€ instead as it contains the 3 optional issues that you can buy in the game. ;)

As I expected, here's what I got :)

An error was encountered while processing your request:

This item is currently unavailable in your region

But thank you again, noneless! :)

Ah. I'm guessing TCO assumed you were in the Eurozone, forgetting that Funcom for reasons best known to their accountants bills almost everyone not in the US or UK in Euros.

Actually I have would expected, assuming a correlation between the amount of noise on this site in support of any particular game type and number of site members preferring that type, to have seen a "<insert snarl words here> themepark" to have been destroyed by a PvP heavy sandbox title in a popularity vote. This does not, in fact, appear to be happening lastt time I checked the voting results.

Its so sad that the combat in TSW under par is by a few miles....     Because it would have been a hell of a game with great less repetitive combat...

That didn't bother me nearly as much as the fact that for months it was promoted as having 3 faction PVP but it turned out to be all in one small little scenario. If they had developed the PVP as much as they once said they were going to, I'd still be playing.

To me the choices are pretty clear. You like PVP? It's ESO and EVE by a country mile. You hate PVP (and don't mind cash shops ) it's TSW and LOTRO.

Don't ESO and Eve both have limited cash shops? Let's not skip the whole truth now!

You'd have to really expand the definition of "cash shop" to make it qualify... imperial edition upgrade for $20 or $14.99 for just the horse without the other Imp edition goodies and only from a website outside the game... unlike those hard to ignore cash shop buttons sitting prominently on the screen in games that actually do have one, you know?

EVE and ESO are sub games.

While TSW does indeed have a cash shop, the only direct link to it in the game's UI is in the main drop-down menu.

Or can someone show me the cash shop button in this picture (unmodded TSW UI)?

LOTRO on the other hand . . . well, I quit LOTRO shortly after Isengard launched, but at that point there were cash shop buttons on what felt like every single UI element.

As for PvP: yes, TSW and LOTRO are both games where PvP can be safely ignored by players (and where the part of the playerbase that is actually interested in PvP will frequently complain it's being ignored by devs too).

I had to check dates to be sure this was a new thread and not a necro of one from around the time Destiny came out.

But FYI Massively covers a number of MOBAs and other non-MMO online games and has been doing so for years "Not so Massively" column, but categorises them various as "psuedo-MMOs" (e.g. that was the head for one of their awards this year, or "MOBAs, roguelikes, MMOTCGs, and other games that aren't quite MMOs."

TSW's devs are getting involved in the voting and promoting it (This is confirmed). Isn't this against the MMORPG.com rules? In contests devs aren't allowed to vote in or actively promote their game.

What? There is ONE single thread about it in the whole forum, and 1 DEV made 1 single post. I wonder how many do you have in ESO's forum...

TSW devs (confirmed) are sending emails to their "playerbase", to vote for them in this contest. What a joke.

I call bullshit. I have 2 emails that get promotionals from Funcom: the one that my actual TSW account (GM since a month after launch) is connected with got the same mail that others have quoted, plugging the Christmas event & with one of the one-month buddy keys that have been mentioned. No reference to this contest. The other -- nada.

Since no-one else appears to have mentioned it:

The 2014 Christmas / Yule / Saturnalia / Winter Solstice event in The Secret World is now live.

Official announcement.

This includes a new (and fun, and not too mind-wrenchingly difficult) investigation mission taking you from a theatre in London to the catacombs of Venice; as well as the return of content from previous years' events include the Hel and Vestige of Nameless days world bosses, and the Niflheim and Road to Xibalba mini-dungeons.

A player created chat channel for event-related discussions is very active in-game and is used for group forming for the dungeons and callouts for world boss sightings / summonings: type

  • /chat join Event

in your chat window to get started (you may want to leave the channel off to avoid puzzle spoilers for the investigation mission, tho').
