How many pre-orders do you think TOR sold/is going to sell in the near future? Feel free to explain your reasoning. |

SWTOR: Blind Buy Collectors or wait for reviews?
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 7/20/11 10:45:43 PM
CE for $150.....i don't know if i'd spend that, even WITH reviews.
But blind buying a normally priced CE or regular edition, for sure. Even if this game SUCKS as an mmo, I'm in it as a die hard KOTOR fan. I am STILL playing KOTOR I & II. Literally. Just got to dantooine again in KOTOR I for the billionth time on all my playthroughs.
Being able to play through 8 different stories (at launch) with branching based on decisions (so maybe 16 or 24 in all at launch), you can bet even if this is an MMO flop, I'll be busy RPGing it up for a good long while! |

Is this illegal ? Pay to play mmo model
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/20/11 4:52:30 PM
The ideas behind the OP are definitely high up in the "Most Asinine of 2011" category. If you don't like P2P, don't play them. I find the F2P model unacceptable, and therefore don't play those games.
There are no legal issues with the P2P or F2P models philosohpically (although one can never account for the practices of unscrupulous companies), but nice try. You complain about having to sub to a game that might end prematurely? Each and every MMO, F2P or P2P has a FINITE LIFESPAN. Some games' times come sooner than others. This is just like any other service that doesn't have a contract. Aside from being charged for months the game is no longer live, there aren't ANY legal issues here. They sound personal to me.
I'd like to know when folks will stand up against the tyranny of F2P/P2W models that encourage developers to PUNISH non-paying customers...models that ENCOURAGE an unlevel playing field...but I'm not so full of myself to write a thesis on it. You know why? Cause in the end I have the choice not to play what I don't want to play, and the more payment models we have, the more competition there is in the industry and that is good for us players (whether we choose to limit the models we pay with or not). |

A damn fine group =) Glad to hear you're coming to TOR. Are you going PvP? If so I'ma have to get on your guys' server!

Free to play MMORPGs the future of PC gaming?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/18/11 7:41:17 PM
I won't pretend to know enough or to be able to see the future to say one way or another if F2P is the future of PC gaming. I just know enough it won't be for me.
My problem lies with the fundamentals of the F2P model. The philosophy begs the developers to encourage the gamer to spend money. How is this done? It starts with fluff, but before long you start seeing stat bonuses on items, XP potions, etc. This leads to games being designed to punish you for NOT spending the money. Increased grind, disadvantaged stats, decreased fun.
The thing I have always loved about MMOs is that its a even playing field (not counting cheats/hacks) for the players involved. With communities such as they are these days, that's really the only thing holding it together for me. Take that away, and I see myself going quickly back to my console and single player PC games. |

What is YOUR experience with Star Trek Online?
General Discussion « Star Trek Online 6/12/11 8:16:53 PM
As an avid Star Trek fan, I was dissappointed when I heard STO was going to feature a "everyone is the Capt of their own ship" style of play. Unlike a lot of folks, it wasn't enough for me to swear off trying it forever, but I didn't try it until it had been out a full year. I went in knowing that it wasn't the sandbox in space I felt the IP truly deserved, but I wanted to give it a go anyway.
I don't remember ever being SO bored SO quickly with an MMO. I hadn't even gotten my first ship upgrade before I started feeling like I was on a repetetive treadmill grind. I enjoyed creating my character and running a few missions, but before long, I was just running the same missions over and over and over and over. The only changes really seemed to be which NPC gave it to me, where they sent me, and who I was up against. When I got bored with that, I tried to see what PvP in space was all about in STO. After waiting in queues for HOURS at a time over the course of the week, I literally didn't see a single queue fill up enough to actually play. This was a devastating fail for STO for me. Maybe it was just that no lower-lvl characters were PvPing, but from my perspective, no one seemed to be. Everyone else in the game seemed to be going about their daily virtual life as if there wasn't another soul in the galaxy, which was about as far from STO as it gets for me. The missions were stale by my first ship upgrade, there was no PvP and no social aspects I could find to enjoy. This is an MMO right? DS9 wasn't bustling with activity, space seemed very empty despite all the ships I could see out there. It basically felt like a lonely, bad single player experience I was expected to fork over a monthly fee for. I didn't. Fortunately I got the box for under $5, and honestly, that's about all it was worth to me.
STO just isn't for the serious MMOers OR the serious Trekkies, in my eyes. I don't mean to speak for anyone, I'm sure there are those in both demographic who enjoy the game. But I think as a whole, it failed across the board. They failed at proper implentation of lore and good game mechanics. Klingons with tribble pets? Come at me, bro! They made a mediocre attempt at writing content that was related to the IP instead of leaning heavily on the IP for content. Instead of making a game fit the IP, they used what parts of the IP fit the game. Bad move for a major and treasured IP, imho.
Then you have the bugs. Mind you, I played ONE YEAR AFTER RELEASE. I was running into bugs in the starter missions. When I went and searched the forums I found that THESE BUGS WERE REPORTED IN THE BETA. Pathetic. This game isn't good, it wasn't made well and its not kept after properly.
Add to all this mediocrity as cash shop, and you have a failgame.
One of the blandest and most boring gaming months of my life. Thanks STO! |

A great group of people to play with, and they play a LOT of games. If you're a mature adult, you probably won't find a better home for your gaming time! They've got casuals and hardcore, play all kinds of stuff FPS, MMORPGs & MMORTS (they recently won W5 on Lords of Ultima).
A group that's always had my respect in the games I've been around them in!
