Aaaand this is why I jumped ship when the 1.2 patch notes hit. I knew this was going to happen. Ugh, shame to watch all that potential flushed away...

As someone who played the Alpha extensively... I don't think AA is going to have lasting appeal for either sandbox or themepark fans.

As a fan of sandbox games, I found that over time, the comprimises made to appease the themepark audience ended up killing my enjoyment of the game. Sure, when  you hit endgame and have a huge ship and a guild castle and all that, it's awesome... untill you realize that it ultimately doesn't mean anything. Some more land and some fancy duds, and that's about it. Owning a territory gives you no real control over the region, no rare resources you can claim, no ability to drive off the mobs and "Reclaim" the area like the lore says you are. It's an expensive status symbol with some minor perks.

The war between the two starting factions never amounts to anything substantial, consequences for bad behavior are a slap on the wrist at best. (I was a member of the pirate faction and never once did I meet a player there who hadn't gone pirate on purpose. The infamy system is a joke.) Players have no real reason to fight each other outside of overseas trading, and even then a lot of players just abuse game mechanics instead of actually fighting half the time. (Camping your own fatcion's ports to kill other players because their teammates can't defend them, guards be damned) Not that it matters, because last time I was playing the open seas were a ghost town.

This game looks like a sandbox game. It wears a sandbox game's skin. But it is not a sandbox game. It is a themepark with a smattering of sandbox features, most of which have been done better in other games. Hell, Everquest 2 had sandbox features that AA doesn't, and EQ2 is the FURTHEST thing from a true sandbox.

The problem with most FFA sandbox games is that they treat their game as a PvP game first and an RPG second. In most Pen and Paper RPGs, yeah, you CAN wantonly murder someone for lulz... but you probably shouldn't. First issue you'll face is the city guard bringing the hammer down on you. Then, if you survive that, chances are you'll have your assets seized, so say goodbye to anything you owned that existed in the territory of the faction your wronged. (houses, investments, contents of your bank.) Then you have to deal with bounty hunters and guard patrols trying to find you.

When I play a FFA PvP Sandbox RPG, I expect a roleplaying game with freedom, not Call of Duty with swords. Gankers should be punished for killing people for no reason, because that's MURDER. (In the game world.) A well designed game CAN have FFA PvP without becoming a slaughterhouse.

An MMO based on a new, untested SiFi tv show. No one could have predicted this game would end up in desperate straits...

Oh, who am I kidding. Even Trion saw this coming from a mile away. Probably just trying to recoup losses from having to cancel End of Nations. The game didn't turn out as bad as most licensed video games, it was actually a decent effort at a game marred by contractual obligations (TV Tie in stories taking development time from other, more important things.). Unfortunately, "decent" does not cut it in the MMO business, not even in the F2P market.

On that note... is the TV show itself any good? Considering it's on the SiFi network... might explain a lot about the game's current state of affairs. =/

The Alpha is translation basically, but the game has a voice acted story line (cutscenes included), as well as misc NPC chatter. Literally (I'm an Alpha Tester), there are a bunch of NPC's that will say stuff as you walk past them. The game is very voice oriented. So that requires voice actors as well. I get them selling Alpha, but the money goes towards hiring the actual actors to completely voice over the game. Everything in this game is voiced over other than the quest text.

Top of that, there are random 3D errors, crashes and issues. Those need to be resolved as well. Trees stutter, some trees are completely black, there are texture stretching, etc. The game is literally in a Alpha state.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg, really, there are still TONS of bugs that need to be fixed before this game is ready for primetime. Adding to what you listed:

-The physics engine right now just cannot handle being on a moving ship. Be at sea long enough and you will see the physics engine crap the bed in some truly bizzare ways. (Shipnado, anyone?)

-Freedich island, the small island in the middle of the map that everyone fights over for trade rights, is very much unfinished. Clipping issues all over the place, some objects in the area randomly decide not to work, and it's trivially easy to fall through the map.

-Clipping issues in general, especially in the northern continent and in the Western Prison.

-Several dungeons do not work.

-Pig tails seem to stretch infinitely.

-Massive performance issues with DX11.

-Memory leaks

-Castle sieges are broken

-Classes need major balance work (Gods have mercy on you if you play a Melee charatcer, as the casters will not)

-Many things in the game are not translated yet.

-Many quests don't work.

Make no mistake, this game really is in an Alpha state right now.

For those that were so upset and irrational about the scamming incident that recently came to light, from a blog post >>> here: Jester Treck.  Turns out that Sohkar, the guy that got scammed says that everything is cool...that he realized he made a stupid mistake and fell for it...then went on to apologize for his behavior...admitting he was tired and "just lost his cool" over being scammed and was more upset with himself that he had done such a stupid thing.      He says he was no "victim" of torture or anything of the sort and he wishes people would stop saying that.

He never wished this to be made into such a big deal...turns out this article was made by an EVE CSM that has an issue with a few players in EVE and he figured if he wrote about this incident he would garner people to his cause.   Sohkar was never a part of it...this CSM did it on his own accord without Sohkar's concent.  Well it now seems to have backfired and people are requesting that the CSM be removed.    Funny that.

Sohkar by they way managed to get back up on his feet, in game, in a couple of days after the incident- when he made 300m ISK from a salvage job.

If you think I am BS'n you and this is all made up...you can hear a live chat on Twitch TV right now between Sohkar and Erotica1.

Live Twitch Chat Happening now.

I'm struggling to understand your reasoning behind wanting to defend and assist these scumbags.

It's a natural human response to traumatic incidents to downplay them and want it to just go away. Ask any woman who has been assaulted. These guys are pure bred 100% scumbags and their behaviour is the lowest possible denominator we have. Condoning this is beyond belief.

Crowing that in fact the guy who blew the whistle on this behaviour may himself be in trouble over this places you exactly amongst these guys as scum. Are you sure you want to identify yourself publically as such?

Hehehe...it's a game for Titus Flavius sake...stop making more of this than what it is..seriously.    Some of you are such drama queens.

Yeah yeah..when everything else fails hide behind 'its just a game' excuse.

Yes, because things that happen in EVE effects the "real" world and Universe.     ::rolls here eyes::

Yeah ofcourse because those are not real human beings you are interacting with right? because its internet so one can be a complete douche and  say whatever he or she wants.

Keep digging that hole deeper..soon you won't be able to climb out of it.

If that is truly how you feel about games, maybe you shouldn't play them.   I mean, seriously...you and some others must really be a sad lot if games effect you that much.   So how often do you go all raging when you die in a game - all the time or just once in awhile?

So because it's "Just a game," we should ignore the fact that these guys bullied a man, who probably had no idea what he was getting in to, to the point of borderline psychological torture? It's all in good fun and shouldn't be taken seriously, right?

You are a complete scumbag! How do you sleep at night!?

I, like many on this forum, found it to be a sub par WOW clone with a bit of fluff added together with spamfest PVP.

If you get chance to try before you buy then definitely do so. With all the hype me and the majority of my Guild were looking forward to this and having it as our main MMO, but after the BETA 90% decided that it was no longer for them. Even SWTOR had a better reaction and that had to be one of the worst MMO's I ever had the displeasure of playing. WS will go the same way.

This game will be FTP within a year.

YOu said Spam PvP

http://youtu.be/pK65BUhNwPs

O.O What the hell was that?!

I thought my Shadowknight in EQ2 was God Tier.... this... this is on a whole other level of broken. The team behind wildstar seriously looked at this and thought it was balanced?!  I've seen less broken things watching X-Tier MUGEN fights on Saltybet.

Your solution implies that the player in question has alts.

There is only one way to deal with griefers, and this is to punish them. And not this slap-on-the-wrist BS that many of these so-called "Hardcore" sandbox games do.

To put it simply: Killing another player for no good reason is MURDER, not PvP. Murdering other players should incur some serious penalties. You can't go into cities or use the roads because the guards will come after you. You'll start to get a bounty on your head, and if it gets large enough you may find half the server trying to kill you for that sweet, sweet moolah. And if you die in this state, you face special penalties: lost crafting goods and consumables, having the contents of your bank confiscated and given to the guys and gals who caught you as a reward, and waking up in jail with all your equipment locked away. You can escape if you want to, but good luck getting your stuff back...

The problem is that most games don't do this. The designers think that people should be able to do whatever they want and think that the playerbase will sort it all out. In doing so, they forget one major thing: human beings are at their core barbaric, tribal, and cruel. (See: DayZ Standalone) For most humans, the main thing that keeps these impulses in check is the fear of social consequence. "I may like Jeff's trophy and I want it for myself, but if I steal it I may get caught, and as a result get kicked out of my tribe and risk starvation, or being eaten by a predator. I may end up in jail for years of my life that I will never get back. And if Jeff sees me, he may permenantly injure or even kill me if he's the vengeful type. Not worth it."

In an MMO, however, such social consequences are minimal to nonexistant. And so people are free to act out as much as they want in ways they could never get away with in the real world, and almost never have to deal with the consequences. This is also known as the G.I.F.T.

Ignore the G.I.F.T., and your game and your playerbase will suffer. Is having your character stuck in jail for 24 hours with little to do fun? NO, and THAT'S THE POINT.

Skyrim. Has the best combat system in the series, had fun and memorable characters, did a great job of immersing you in the world, and has some of the best mod support of any game to date.

As much as I loved Morrowind... I just can't go back. The combat is awful, almost all the characters have zero personality, the world itself feels static, and quite frankly the game's depth is actually quite shallow and can easily fall apart if you scratch the surface. (I.E. If you become the head of the temple, and then declare yourself the Nerevarine, no one reacts, and you have to go talk to your former master to get the temple's blessing... yeah.)

There are 2 main reasons this kickstarter failed:

1. It's Brad. The man who made the epic disaster that was Vanguard, and he has done nothing to earn the public's trust since then. Why would I send money to a guy who screwed up his last game so badly?

2. The game is targeted at the Hardcore Old School crowd. The kind of people who are into Project 1999 and Pre-Tram UO. The people rejected a mentoring system, claiming it was too modern. These people have their Rose Colored Glasses welded on so tightly that they were actively driving away people who might have been interested despite Brad's track record. As long as these people have such tight control of the game's direction (they are funding it after all), you will never get this game to sell to the general public.

I know I might be hitting a sore spot with that last one, but as much as you guys have the right to love Old UO and EQ, the rest of the world has moved on.

*waits for the first person in this thread to lament players building penises and claim the game will be ruined*

Wait until open beta. Penis Towers. Penis Towers as far as the engine can render. =)

The Fanboyism is strong in this thread. Sorry you have to put up with all this senseless abuse, OP.

The part about this that pisses me off the most is that they had the NERVE to lock content behind a paywall when they're already suffering from controversy over having a sub game with microtransactions. ESPECIALLY something like a character race. Even in a f2p game, locking races and classes behind a paywall is a no-no. (Players are more likely to stick around and spend money if they get to play a character they like.)

It's like Zenimax WANTS this game to crash and burn, and are banking on making enough money off the IP alone to get by.... hmmmm, why does this sound familiar....

It isn't exactly a "no trinity" type of mechanic, rather, it's a change in how agro has been managed over the years.  So, one guy (the tank) won't be able to stand there while the mob mindlessly attacks him (or her) anymore.  They've improved the AI, calling it Emergent AI, so that more thought goes into encounters and the mob reactions when attacked.  There are still going to be Healers.  There are still going to be CC mechanics. and DPS.  They've just re-worked agro.

But..we'll see how it works out in the end.  IMHO, GW2 tried something similar and I find their experiment to be a failure.   I won't even step into a dungeon there because of how much of a mess I find their combat.  I just hope Dave Georgeson isn't chasing GW2's tail too much with this.

I believe that this is the exact reason GW2's attempt at a lack of trinity failed. While the core components were there for the players, the mob AI was no different from that of WoW and EQ1.

If you're going to change combat mechanics at a fundamental level like that, the AI needs to also be reworked to fit into the new mechanics.

I truly cannot wait to see what EQN's AI is capable of. I will cry tears of joy the day I see rank-and-file orcs able to pull off tactics as advanced a a Phalanx or Wedge fromation calvary charge without the needs for scripts.

Is anyone really shocked by this?

Free Realms hasn't seen a major update in over a year. Clone wars I have no idea about. However, given the history of the genre, is was only a matter of time. Games focused on being "Kid Friendly" tend not to have much  staying power in this genre.

Vanguard? The game was in development hell for years, only barely got published, and was released in a horribly broken state. The game never had too much of an audience, and now that it's getting older and the server hardware is getting more and more difficult to maintain, it wouldn't make sense to keep it up.

Wizardry? Do I even need to tell you why that game is getting axed?

As much as I disliked DCUO and Spiral Knights.... LINEAGE 2!

I have no idea how that game has an audience. Lackluster character creation, broken controls,  tedious quests that go out of their way to waste your time, terrible PvP... and that's just the first few hours.

Honestly, if everyone wants to skip 90% of the game's content to get to the "good stuff",  you have failed gloriously as a game designer. The fact that so many games offer this as a service is a testament to how stale and outdated the MMORPG formula is at the moment.

[mod edit]There is, in fact, a selection for a non-recurring subscription built right into the account page, so even if the OP's fantastic story is true, it never even had to happen.

[mod edit] I wouldn't let it dissuade you from trying the game. The recent patches have been fantastic, and there hasn't been a better time to give it a try.

So you're saying it's the OP's fault that the company keeps charging him illegally, because he chose to go with a recurring sub, which can be cancelled easily in most games with no hassle? [mod edit] You do realize that AV could get into some serious legal trouble for doing things like this?

No, I'm saying he makes no sense, and therefore his story is highly suspect.

If he changed all his paypal and credit card information, how could he possibly know that they were still trying to charge him? What does that even mean?

[mod edit]

He could be getting notifications that someone is trying to charge him on his old info. Simple.

I don't know what's funnier, the fact that Blizz replaced the help button with the cash shop icon, the apologists claiming that Blizz is doing nothing wrong here, or the people trying to spin this into a "victory" for subscription games. I just... hahahahaha... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

It's such a shame. This game had so much potential, and they squandered it by throwing in all that grind once ascended gear came out, not to mention how poorly they've handled their living story content/ special events. (remember the bug and exploit ridden disaster that was dragon bash?) Good ideas are not enough to hold a game afloat if the implementation is shoddy, which it certainly has been as far as post launch content is concerned.

I'm glad I quit playing when I did.
