Faith in Cryptic after Champions Online cash shop model?

Originally posted by Raltar Who is RaltOr? Consoles have hard drives and modems and several other new gadgets, sure. But if I put a washing machine in my car does it cease to be a car? No, its still a car, just with some extra piece of technology stuffed into it for no apparent reason. Consoles have been held back in terms of progress by two major issues down through gaming history: The first is Hardware, which as you pointed out is an area where they have begun to catch up. But somehow console creators still have to find a way to create a $500 machine that can compete with a $2000+ desktop computer and that is always going to be an uphill battle. Consoles will never be upgradeable the way a Desktop PC is and they will still always lag behind in terms of cutting edge technology, even if only by a few years. However its the SECOND issue that holds back consoles much more than the first. And that issue is that the MINDSET of console owners has not greatly changed since the days of the Genesis and SNES. Console owners don't really want to WORK for the console. They want to go to the store, slap down some money and walk home with a game in their hand which they can play within five minues of getting home. They want a quick, easy, simple form of entertainment which doesn't require a great deal of thought. Console developers design their games to cater to this crowd of people... And thats a big part of why STO isn't getting player crews and a lot of other features which people on this forum are asking for. The average PC gamer wants to play a very deep, complex game with lots of possible social options. But just try selling a game like that to the average drunken frat boy with an Xbox or your little sister with her Wii. Its the mindset of these casual players and their consoles that really holds back the creative aspects of game design.
(P.S. Just an FYI for you, the fact that consoles have hard drives doesn't make my example with the Dreamcast outdated, since the 1.5mb of memory I made refrence to was RAM, not a hard drive. Even todays modern consoles still have less RAM than the average desktop PC owned by a gamer, so the example is still relevant even nine years later.) You are raltor or you not clever enough to realize i don't give a damn about getting your name correct you blind pc fanboy. You do not need to pay $2000.00 to play pc games anymore. Once again welcome to 2009. Lets see how many good pc games with a lot of options have come out lately? Oh wait they were all either released on a console as well or in most cases like KOTOR and Mass Effect they were released on a console first. There is no different mindset anymore!! Gamers want games and most people who have a console also have a pc. Then there are fanboys like you who try to lie to yourself as to why your choice of video game medium is somehow superior to others and how you are the only unique little snow flake. The removal of player crews has nothing to do with Xbox, or Nintendo, just has everything to do with cryptic. They claimed it would be too difficult to make it engaging for all the players involved in the crew and require too many mini game like mechanics. None of that is impacted on whether its on a console or not so stop fooling yourself. This is a purely developer choice on making the game more WoW like....you know those pc games. Did a 3do and Neo geo touch you in your special spots or something? Cause all this blind console hate just shows how ignorant you are. Consoles are now just pc's with set, and often weaker specs, but is more stable and convenient to use. You might say this is "not working for the console" but guess what genius, you shouldn't have to work to get a game to run. If you think the pc's greatest quality is the achievement of installing a game and possibly needing to update drivers or whatever "work" you think is needed then you are playing games for the wrong reason. |

Yes in some games the player base is very helpful. When i played Warhammer it was filled with a lot of players who didn't know what they were doing but had an upbeat attitude about it. Including a tank who had no idea what the purpose of taunt was. In champions online i would say the majority of the community is helpful except for a few loud mouths who shout the same internet cliched insults and try to take quest items while you are fighting mobs. Even though the game is so solo friendly who it only takes 5 seconds to kill a group of henchmen yourself. |

Pretty easy to solo in this game as long as you make sure to take a passive and get powers to compliment your build. Melee characters without a pull or lunge ability can be very painful to play since mobs will kite you. Like a previous poster mentioned you get more xp if you group however i believe far fewer people do it in CO than CoX because the majority of xp in this game is given as quest rewards and not through grinding. I am only 35 now but i leveled easily just soloing missions, except for the gap at 31 to 32 |

People can throw out the anecdotal "I know X many people planning to get it, i know Y many who hate it now." But that was not the point of my post. What I (and i believe many others) are complaining about is the removal about an extra feature that really could have created a whole new gaming dynamic in MMOs. Would all of your friends all of a suddenly lose interest in the game because of player crews? No because you can still solo it just as well. Would some players lose interest because the game has lost a feature that really segregated from other mmos. Yes they will. i will be lying if i said i was not planning to get the game now. However i can definitely say that i have lost a great deal of interest and really doubt how long i would remain interested in the game now that it seems to be just another MMO in space. If i wanted space i would play Eve and if i wanted space/land i would go back to SWG. (Ps. I personally enjoy SWG NGE more than SWG pre-cu so thats not directly an insult.)

Champions Release .. Bodes well for STO?

For me, a game is no different form of entertainment than a movie. Some of the most well reviewed movies were complete pieces of sh*t in my eyes. I've seen the same thing in games. Birth of the Federation was one of the most panned games when it came out, yet IMO it is the best of all the star trek based games. If I had listened to the critics, I would have never touched BOTF and missed out on many hours of fun entertainment. Same goes for Darkfall. There seems to be a good group of people that enjoy that game. Does it appeal to the masses? No and I don't play it because the style of game isn't my cup of tea. But to those people playing it they could care less.So they're having fun and getting their money's worth while the naysayers seem to continue to go from thread to thread bashing games. And no offense, but I would never use the naysayers of this website as a barometer to what's good and what's not. Fanboys neither.
Old saying goes that smart people learn from their mistakes, Wise people learn from the mistakes of others. Your sig is a perfect example of the misperception some people have of naysayers. Forums are meant for people to share their opinions and ideas. An educated consumer would want to read why others were satisfied, or not, by a product before they purchase. It is not naive to buy a game you believe you will enjoy. It is a naive gamble to buy something without doing any research on the product. Not cricisizing you for enjoying the game, if you find it enjoyable that is all that matters to you. My point was simply that if read between the lines and flames and trolls you can often find real honest opinins for good or bad about a game. Unless they have a free trial, this research can mean the difference between wasting money or not.

General Discussion « Star Trek Online 9/21/09 7:47:16 PM
@Raltor. Its not 2000 anymore. Consoles have harddrives too so your whole comparison to the dreamcast is really outdated. I agree that cash shops are bad in games such as Requim where its a neccesity for leveling but that really hasn't been the case in Champions so far. If you don't want a Witchcraft action figure well then don't buy one. |

First of all i still think this game has potential but the big selling point for friends and myself on this game was the previous teaming aspect of us all working together on one ship. Primary reasons i have read that this has been has removed is because A.What do you do when X team member is not on. B. How do you make different roles work. Especially the Captain. Here are a few suggestions i have on these two issues. A1. Let every player have their own ship for when they choose to solo but allow them to instantly transport to other players ships. Limit it to guild mates only if needed. For instance I could be the tactical officer for the Whitestar which is another players ship but when he is not online i can captain my own ship the Bluestar. When i am not online an NPC will serve as tact officer for the whitestar. B1. I believe the majority of complaints about roles on a single player ship are grossly exaggerated. All they simply do is to break down the standard MMO formula and distribute it to various players. Tactical officer: will be a dps role. Instead of giving them a sinister trike allow them to target different areas of an enemy ship. Those of higher level should get special tricks and abilities that would encourage players to focus on one role but allow players to work on all skills, similar to EVE. Engineer: can serve as a "Healer" of sorts. Allow them to fluctuate the ships Hull points while also giving them the ability to buff certain other roles through diverting power. Medic: will be an important role for away missions but can still play a part in ship battles. They can go to sickbay and tend to those wounded during ship battles. You know when the classic sparks fly out the console and a guy in a red shirt is dying. This should have a random chance of happening to players as well and require the ships doctor to treat them quickly. The more people that are injured should lead to a debuff on the ship that slows down all actions, especially engineering due to the lack of crew members available. Captain: In every mmo i have played when grouping someone who knows the fights or system best will take a leadership role. The captain should be built around those players. Only the captain should have access to all players information. Engineers down in engineering should not see the info for the tactical officer or medics. The captain should. Comms officer might be able to scan to find weaknesses in enemies, this information should also be directly sent to the captain. However their primary role should be a buffing class, different than the engineer because their buffs will come in the form of "Orders" and Maneuvers". Orders will be nothing more than passive buffs granted if an officer follows the exact commands given by the captain. Captain will be able to see Engineers interface and gives an order to divert power to shields. If engineer follows the order then the action is improved. A skilled engineer might know more than the captain and ignore the order, lose the buff, but divert power to engines instead. Maneuvers would work similar to the combo system prestent in LOTRO. Instead of burglars however the captain will only be able to initiate it. Think of the Picard or Riker maneuver. By ordering several different roles to perform an action at the right time they will allow the next player in the sequence to create a combo that will result in a special maneuver. Captains will have to unlock these maneuvers on their own and certain powerful ones should require characters in each role to unlock certain criteria powers as well.
I know this was a long list and no i am not a huge Star Trek fan so there may be some errors in regards to what engineers are called these days or how to spell Riker(?) but i did have high hopes for this game. While i still plan to try it, the one great feature that seperated it from the competition has been sadly removed. Perhaps its a foolish dream but i hope cryptic reconsiders and takes another glance at what they can do to create a more enjoyable game. |

General: LFM Ulduar 25, PST Stats and Achievement
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/04/09 2:38:20 AM
What i find ironic is that the same expansion that released achievements is also the one that dumbed down raids so that they can be easily pugged yet people seem to take them more seriously now. I am all for games catering to casuals rather than small sects of people but WoW has held gamers hand to the point that they no longer even need to interact with each other in order to make (often false) assumptions. -Check armory: know someones spec, talents everything. Why bother talking when i can know your hit rating in less than a minute. -Link achievements: sure you might have been carried through that encounter but now I will assume you know what you are doing even though it takes like 15 seconds to explain these encounters to people. Lets wait an hour more to run VOA when we can find enough people who meet our criteria. -Arena rating: Sure i have better gear and the same class and spec as you but if you beat me in a duel then you are lucky, if i win its all skill because I have over 2k rating.
This game is not hard people and plenty of bad players can lie about dps (a lot do ) and get carried to achievements. Bring the player and if they dont know what they are doing, boot em. Thats how we did it when instances actually required coordination. Also if you are recruiting for a guild, new players who might need to be taught a bit of how to maximize the potential of their class are often more loyal than someone who is just guild hopping to get the best loot. |

How I got converted to Soloism today ><
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 11/16/08 3:35:25 AM
Personally i think what really hurt WoW atleast was the whole inspecting gear, armory talents fiasco. It is bad enough when you can find the answer to every quest for a brand new expansion on a website but armory really took the mystery out of each character. Back in old school WoW youd sooner or later learn to recognize which items were which but atleast talents and things such as enchants were left to the privacy of the character. If games were more about knowing your class and less about gear i believe it would alleviate some of this "i am elite because i kill a little bit faster than you" crap.

The Official "We're Angry at SOE" thread
SWG Veteran Refuge « Star Wars Galaxies 11/16/08 3:28:43 AM
I think this thread is a great idea. I played SWG when it first came out and unlike the majority of these so called Vets i remember how broken the game truly was. SWG precu was not some mmo paradise. It had 32 classes, 30 of which were typicallly broken at the same time forcing everyone to migrate to one or two flavor of the month classes. Questing consisted of grinding the same kill this mobs hideout quest and every one and their mother wore composite armor. I really hope that they do start banning people who religiously hijack threads on this board. I dont play the game now but like to check up on here to see whats new yet every thread someone who still PLAYS the game posts gets taken over by people angry at changes that happened years ago. If you hate the game, dont play and move on. |

World of Warcraft: Why I'm Looking Forward to WotLK

While WoW dying is an exageration, a lot of people from vanilla WoW have left and you have to be foolish if you think otherwise. Funny anecdotal observation i have found lately is that back when WoW first came out when i talked with other players they all had a lot of mmo experience from other games. Whether it was EQ, UO CoH whatever. Now a days when i talk to other WoW players it is there first mmo. i think a lot of the games success stems from word of mouth and heavy marketing, something that other mmos are lacking unless you keep up on them. |

World of Warcraft: Why I'm Looking Forward to WotLK
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 11/12/08 11:31:59 PM
I don't see why all the WoW haters are whining about the stability issues the game is suffering from, this is common with major content changes. Now if this persists a few months from now then id be complaining about it too. While i am excited about exploring the new content my major issue is that it offers nothing new for end game. One new BG...yay, wintergrasp which will inevitably just turn into another halaa....yay More pvp focused on arena...yay. I think blizzard is pretty good at adapting and evolving their pve content but they have no clue on how to give us real pvp. I'm sorry but there is no "War" in Warcraft. If arena is going to be this expansion poor excuse for pvp once again then i just hope this game will tide me over till a few more people reach end game in Warhammer. Blizzard expansions never really feel like an expansion to me but more of a greedy developer hitting the reset button on the time sink to force us to grind again. What i want is New content, give me housing! boats! a War! that is new content in my mind not just more instances, bgs and arenas to grind for the third time. |

Right now there are still a lot of people attempting to level and scenarios are far more appealing and convenient than rvr in that regard. I believe the reason so many people are harsh on warhammer for rvr is because it is the only mmo that comes to mind, my mind atleast, that actively encourages lower leveled players to participate in pvp. This is ussually reserved for end game players. I would love to see them test different variations on xp gains through pvp. Perhaps test making scenarios give double renown but little to no xp while orvr and questing gives double, or even triple the current xp. Not to compare everything to WoW but when its players first reached 60, on my server atleast, everyone starting with exploring the current end game instances, scholo etc. and then when we got bored their was constant random raids on tauren mill crossroads etc. BGs didnt even really kill it until they implimented dishonor kills which was the final nail in the coffin for WoWs world pvp. Atleast War seems to encourage orvr compared to its competition. |

What classes are overpowered in your opinion?
General Discussion « WAR (Warhammer Online) 10/22/08 8:50:34 PM
To the op i say that overall the game is pretty well balanced but things change depending on your spec in each tier. Tier 1 ranged classes have the advantage of just standing back, nuking and kiting when neccesary. Tier 2/3 melee is able to turn the tide on ranged classes with their snare removing ability. Things seem to turn slightly back into ranged classes favor at end game due to more cc abilities like knockbacks compared to melees snare removing abilty not correctly giving the 10 second immunity afterward. I still dont feel gimped on my witch hunter, in part because some ranged classes dont know how to kite and because in most group situations if im unable to counter a kiter fast enough i will abandon them and rush for another nearby squishy while they run away from the battle. Big plus for class balance i see in this game, compared to that other popular mmo, is that all specs can still function in pvp. Tanks don't need to spec dps in order to stand a chance and actually play a crucial role. |
