Should Gold Farming be Illegal- a real misdemeanor or felony?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/09/12 8:15:08 AM
Originally posted by Novusod Gold Farming isn't illegal. ToS are NOT binding legal contracts. You CANNOT get punished by criminal law by selling, buying, or farming gold. There is a large difference between civil and criminal cases, and ToS are not even completely binding in civil cases. In other words, you can wipe your butt with the ToS. It's not the same as an actual law which a government will punish you if broken. |

Please help me with my master's thesis on online gaming
Off-Topic Discussion « General Discussion 10/08/12 9:57:50 PM
Just because you fail to see a conclusion you can pull from this survey doesn't mean there isn't a reason the survey is short. I can easily see several conclusions that can result from this survey, which can readily help someone complete their master's thesis. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it needs to be fixed.
So many know-it-alls who think they know better than other people and thus need to give them advice. |

Very few MMORPG's are balanced, especially at release.
Then you have the entire argument of
1) Rock Paypa Scissors Bro! - The argument that it's not suppose to be balanced, as some classes are SUPPOSE to beat other classes. These people typically fail to realize that the game is unabalanced to the point where Rock crushes through four sheets of paper coated rocks to rape scissors. 2) Player Skill v. Character Skill- The argument of what is real skill in MMORPG's? Is player skill (reflexes, coordination, strategy, tactics, knowledge, gameplay experience) superior, or is it more important to have character skill (overpowered class, overpowered build, higher level, better gear, twinks, min/max exploitation of mechanics/character setups not intended to be as powerful as they are and later nerfed in a patch).
I'd say that WoW is balanced enough in Argument #2 to where I, as a great player, can take a partially twinked character and gimped class and wipe the floor with a twinked out character playing an OP class. In GW2? Not really the case. I never met a single Warrior that could beat my builds, but that's because I was rolling exploitative game mechanics. I min/maxed the metagame to realize the power of being a tank, exploited overpowered abilities like Frenzy and Fear Me, and was next to impossible to kill while doing more damage than most players. Only players that could beat me in a duel were even MORE overpowered mesmers or bunker guardians, and I could beat them if I switched over to MY overpowered Mesmer.
What people fail to realize is a lot that is complained about is overpowered, but beatable. Unfortunately, it's irrelevant if it's beatable or not. It's still overpowered. I roll in such a way to roflstomp any other player, no matter how good they think they are. The only ones that can beat me are people more overpowered. I know it's not because they're better, because I can switch over to the same overpowered mechanics and faceroll them with more health than they had vs. my less OP build. When you can hop on a Mesmer OP build and faceroll everyone, and then hop on to a Warrior OP build and faceroll everyone except people using that Mesmer OP build. Well...it's obviously not you as a player. |

Actually, GW2, like most MMORPG's, rewards overpowered character builds, higher levels, better gear, more play experience (not player skill experience, but knowledge about the metagame), and other non-player-skill based topics that are mostly contrived from CHARACTER skill.
If you don't believe me, then have a pro tournament winner play the default class setup and build, while a mediocre player (competant enough to play his own class well) play an overpowered tourny build. I promise you, the pro will lose every time. Perhaps if the OP build was a newb, he'd win. Unfortunately, I said mediocre competant player, not a total newb.
Mediocre Competant Player + OP build > Best Player + Gimp Build (any build but a select few OP builds) |

Requested a Full Refund - Already back to WoW
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 10/08/12 9:35:55 PM
I requested a full refund yesterday (and already got it) thanks to Anet's great customer service. I didn't even have to provide my reason, but got it anyway. I was disappointed with the game, due to balance issues in PvP. I read a thread earlier about the fact GW2 is very unfriendly towards small groups, and I have to agree. That is as well a reason I got a full refund. I was unable to play with my friends due to an inability to group queue in sPvP and the impossibility of winning tPvP with only 2-3 players. This is unfortunate, as I enjoyed GW2's combat and classes. I thought they did great. Now I'm back to playing WoW, as the PvP is extremely well balanced compared to GW2, far more casual friendly, group friendly, arenas for small groups as well as full groups, but most of all it's just plain better made and more polished. (Obviously, as GW2 doesn't have 10 million subscribers, lol). |

One of Human's greatest achievements is our mind, our soul, our brain, our thoughts-- the ability to think in abstract terms, use our imagination to create hypothetical situations in our mind, and think for ourselves.
Yet...do people ACTUALLY think for themselves?
Even the swarms of angsty pre-teens (so-called "Free Thinkers" found online) don't seem to think for themselves, and instead regurgitate what they hear others say. It is not uncommon to hear pre-teens of any topic or stance simply repeat what they hear others say, contrary to their adult counterparts (the adults who actually probably DO think for themselves). In fact, most regurgitation doesn't even seem to be the best of the best, and instead just seem to be from someone who often has many things incorrect or has a different perspective than most other adults or professionals.
Ex, A teen in defense of their faith quoting a teacher whose research or thought processes aren't as well versed or popularly accepted like a "better" teacher or speaker. Ex2. A teen in defense of their non-faith whose arguments are riddled with ignorance of the faith they're trying to attack, when another adult has better arguments that are more educated in the opposition's beliefs. Yet the teen doesnt use this "another adult" with better arguments, and regurgitates the weaker arguments because they're spoken most often.
Ex. A college yuppy know-it-all freshman who regurgitates what they read in a [Class] 101 textbook. Or perhaps later spouting off how they hate [popular historical figure] and instead appreciate the art of [unpopular historical figure] and [rarely heard of historical figure]. When in reality, [popular] actually IS really good at art, and [unpopular] and [rarely heard] actually suck, which is mostly why they're unheard of. Trendy trends to be trendy.
Do YOU believe that MOST people think for themselves? Do YOU believe that very FEW do? Do YOU believe that EVERYONE does? If so, how do you explain ignorance, regurgitation, mindless mob behavior? Does it exist? Perhaps mob mentality is actually a false perception, or more correctly a confusion of stereotypes from a vocal minority? Explain yourself!

Why do ignorant people voice their opinions as if they're professionals?

Why do ignorant people voice their opinions as if they're professionals?
Off-Topic Discussion « General Discussion 5/27/12 3:59:31 PM
Question #1: I noticed, especially on the internet, the majority of people will voice their opinion as fact, even when they have no experience or knowledge on the subject. Why do they do this? My Answer to #1: Do people actually think they know what they are talking about? Does the toneless sarcasticless space of the Internet only make it SEEM like they're stating it as fact? Do people think reading something on the internet makes it true?
Question #2: On another topic, why do people say irrational things that are contrary to basic logic that most people agree upon? (Ex. "Just because you write in Word a game design, doesn't make you a game designer.") By very definiton and logic, this quote is entirely irrational and incorrect. Doodling in Word, designing a game or game features, would very much so make someone a game designer. My Answer to #2: Is it because people don't understand the use of adjectives? "Experienced Designer, Amateur Designer, Poorly Designed, Inexperienced Designer, etc. etc." Do people get angry when others are given or have self-proclaimed titles, even when true? Do people get upset because it's misleading and fail to realize they're being misled by their own ignorant (of adjectives) assumptions?
Question #3: What makes people believe misinformation? Whether it is FOX NEWS spewing lies to their redneck viewers, or internet rumors or historical myths that are believed to be true (such as people thinking the earth was flat, and Columbus believing contrary)-- why do people believe these things? My Answer to #3: Is it because these people don't understand or never learned how to properly research something or think rationally on the subject? I was taught in grade school that Columbus thought the Earth was round, and everyone else at the time didn't. This was never true, but it's still taught in many of our schools BY history teachers. Yet when I first thought about it, my rational processes and basic logic concluded that most people probably thought it was round, since the beginning of time. Upon doing ACTUAL research, I find my logic to actually become true. Most people DIDN'T think the Earth was flat. What I learned in grade school was a lie. Yet most people dont ever seem to question their logic or challenge what they've learned. |

What part of game design requires someone to do more than design in relation to gaming? Exactly. He is wrong, and should be shunned for it. SHUNNNN!!!!!!!!!! |

Originally posted by Loktofeit Horrible comparison, as always, since they actually have schools for Architectural Engineering, counselrs and board members who license people. Contrary to your belief, they do not have a Game Design Board at prestigious univeristies who dictate who is licensed as a designer.
You are also mixing Science and Art. Also yes, if you engineer architecture, then that makes you an architectural engineer. Are you a licensed or qualified one? Those are adjectives, once again! However, you have to look into the definition. To design something, you need only dribble on paper. To actually build it, is something else. If Architectural Designer is different from Architectural Engineer, then perhaps you're only a designer. If you were to add an appropriate ADJECTIVE to your "Architectural Engineer" then yes, most will agree. You do not have to be licensed or qualified to be a "Unskilled Architectural Engineer" or "Amateur Architectural Engineer".
TLDR: Architecture and Game Development aren't the same things, despite how you're so arrogant you think they are. Changing the subject only brings more herp to your derp. TLDR 2: Adjectives seem to give you a lot of trouble. |
