Rift or SWTOR?
LFGame « General Discussion
8/22/14 5:32:35 AM

If I wanted to subscribe to the game I'd probably choose SWTOR. Nice leveling experience if subbed, crap if F2P. Play it for the stories and be done with it.

If I'd wanted F2P and/or longevity I'd go with Rift, given no other choices of course.

Nice story driven leveling if you're subscribing. Play till 50 on a few toons you like the story of. That should keep you busy for a while. After that, well you'll see it when you get there.

Hi all,

Basically, I am looking for two games : (1) mmorpgs with decent popularity & endgame and (2) mmorpg that feels like a single player game.

I will be playing with my gf so duo-friendliness of a game is important.

For the first category, I found GW2 / Rift / FF ARR. I would like to avoid a game that focuses its end-game contents on structured & difficult raids as in WoW.  Actually, I enjoyed playing WoW with world-class raid team 4-5 years ago but now I don't have enough time to do so and would want to avoid WoW style endgame.

But I am little worried because all game seems to have their own drawbacks.

GW2: Are there enough endgame contents?

Rift : Is it WoW-clone and its end-game is large raid focused?

FF ARR : Does it simply focuses on old-style grinding where I do the same stuff repetitively?

For the second category, I found TSW, ESO and Lotro. Basically, to me, it seems like I can enjoy most of them with my gf as we do in  RPGs with co-op support.  I am leaning toward TSW but would like to hear more opinions.

GW2: Good leveling experience, endgame is Fractals, WvW, PvP, cosmetic once you're in all ascended gear. Many leveling paths, alt friendly. No real tiered gear progression to keep you on the hamsterwheel till you drop, but from the sound of what you're saying that's good.

Rift: A prettier WoW clone pretty much but with less content, raid for the top gear. Small world, not alt friendly.

FF ARR: end game is raiding as in Rift and WoW.

TSW: interesting game for a while, graphics a bit dated, but F2P so no harm in checking that out. Not fantasy good or bad your call.

ESO: not even duo friendly, wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's not intent on solo play to end game grind.

Lotro: graphics dated, but a unique feel if you dig the lore. Long term not really all that hot, but it has something. Freemium will only get you that far. It's a bit of nostalgia really, one of those games you should have played a few years ago.

I certainly wouldn't mind some more guild oriented content. Being able to challenge a guild to a GvG would be nice. Heck, just consentual dueling in the open world would be cool.

I PvP with a minion master these days, and the spec can be really strong. In a 1 on 1 fight MM's are very hard to kill with all their minions around, it's doable but hard. Many people underestimate the power of the MM and the damage it can dish out, even two on one you can still come out on top. I always grin when I see a Thief / Ranger DPS duo coming for the point I'm capping. They get overconfident and simply get destroyed by the conditions. Kiling one is nearly a given, also killing the second should be quite possible from time to time. When they come for a second round, they'll probably be more careful.

A warrior that knows what he's doing is going to be a close call though.

While ESO was an one-monther and WS was a three-monther, GW2 have 2 years and it is well alive. I beta tested all them, but only GW2 had me playing for these two long years, because I never played a MMO for so long.  I played a lot of different MMO: EQ, EQII, SWG, Ryzom, Darkfall, ATIDT, EVE, WAR, TOR, FFXI, FFXIV, Vanguard, but only GW2 grabbed me.

Certainly Gw2 made something right...

See you at LS 2 chapter 4!

Then you should have tried GW... Beats GW2 every day.

Nah, I prefer GW2 over its predecessor any time of the day, any day. GW isn't even an MMO. Solo play with henchmen, crazy unbalanced builds, fun for a while, but it didn't grab me.

Huge is of course very relative, especially when you bring WoW into the picture. I doubt AA will be anywhere near huge, even at launch. I doubt it will get to the hypelevel SWTOR got to. Open World Full loot PvP sandbox, how do you scream niche game any louder? It might be a success for a couple of months, but after that, I don't see it being, or ever becoming HUGE in the West.

Wait and see though, maybe everybody else got it all wrong and you're really supposed to glide on top of your glider and people will suddenly discover that they enjoy being ganked by players that don't have a semblance of a real life. Who knows, it might turn out to be new WoW, or not. Players might all have a sudden change of heart and change from themepark to sandbox, the way MMO's were always supposed to be played, or not.

Get real, it won't be anywhere near huge, not for any noticeable length of time anyway.

Can GW2 Serve As the Template For The Future of MMOs?

Please NO.

Let me guess, you didn't read the whole article, just the title, didn't you? Read the article and then try again, it's actually a pretty good one.

I'm re-thinking this as well. Looking else where. See what else I can dig up lol thank you for ur help guys.

Yeah, beats getting scammed by sites like that. Amazing that they're still around, and proud of it.

Liking it so far. A whole lot more promising than season 1, even if season 1 had it's good moments. It's still early in the season, no reason to use big words just yet.
I'm using Google Chrome, and I'm not seeing any WS adds at all. Knights Fable is flashing away and that's somewhat annoying but whatever.
Let's see how this works on the phone.
9/10 for one reviewer who got to level 20 and did his first dungeon and found that awesome (as most do). That doesn't quite cry longevity just yet. Grains of salt, don't leave home without them.

I you have all 3 installed, then GW2 is probably best to kill some time. I'll assume you bought GW2 already so expenses should be minimal. Megaserver technology so you'll never feel alone in the world. Multiple leveling paths with different races, so you can spend a good deal of time. Endgame gear is a bit of a grind, either crafting or running dungeons. After that there's little else to do but WvW or get new gear for their appearance or level another character race/class. Combat is a bit twitchy, you may or may not like it.

Living Story Season 2 should provide you with new stuff to do every couple of weeks. If you play almost 24/7 then that won't be enough to keep you hooked for more than a couple of months though.

SWTOR is a bit of a harsh leveling experience if you don't sub, but if you do sub then story driven leveling is great. Endgame is Meh though. Playerbase isn't too shabby. You can do all classes as a subscriber, might be something for a few months even if only one or two classes have a story worth playing IMO. Combat is pretty generic, but looks quite good. I like the lightsabre as a weapon and the SW universe looks good. HERO engine is the limiting factor here in terms of gameplay. If you can get over how robot-like and boxed in everything is in this game, and you like the SW universe, then why not?

RIFT, small player base but aimed towards Raids as endgame, so if you like that in WoW this could be the one for you. Linear leveling, smaller world than WoW, a bit better graphics than WoW, but very similar in terms of combat. You're classic fantasy MMO really. They try to be different from WoW, and there are differences, but if you're going to go back to WoW anyway, then you're probably better off trying something different for a while.

I guess for a F2P it's a pretty good free ride for a while. I'll have to check it out some day. I can't see myself leveling multiple heroes though, not from the sound of the comments above. Repetition rules it would seem.
Most of the promises were kept eventually, but not all. Still, Great game and looking forward To Living Story Season 2.

Why wouldn't WoW players be interested in a sneak peak at the latest version of their game? Graphics overhaul is long overdue, hopefully performance won't suffer too much.

It's not hard to believe when you're talking about about the undisputed King of the Hill.

Kinda makes me think more people visit this site than us regular posters.

If you're going to call ESO the most popular MMORPG you're not really all that worried about the truth now are you?

Unless you've got a new definition of popular of popular of course.

Here's my 2c from a long time DAoC, WoW, WAR player.

Stopped reading there...

ESO is totally different than those 3 you name. ESO was build to be a PvE MMO all around questing, while the ones you played are made with PvP in mind.

If you really stopped reading after the first line, then you should have seriously considered not posting anything for a while, a long while.

I never really could get into GW1. Low level cap, no jumping, henchmen, solo game with coop possibilities. I love GW2 though, even if the first Living Story Season was more miss than hit. I find it far more enjoyable, love both the PvE and PvP, sometimes some WvW solo or small team or mindless zerg. Whatever I feel lilke that day.

In GW1 I never got past the solo experience. It just wasn't dynamic.
