Or what if the Iron Rock scenario happens where the Faction population is so skewed towards one Faction, for whatever reason, that it is 12 : 2,5 : 1? How are the other two Factions going to compete, hm?

I just don't understand the RvR/sandbox crowd. That ship has sailed, move on!
Don't have a clue about this, but you could expect the following lunacy:

"This game is not for carebears. PvE? WHAT pve? Go back to your woof and grind some more of the ultra easy mode AI whose brain is as dead as a doornail."

That happened in WAR, a game with a MASSIVE potential for both PvE and PvP. That's mostly due to presence of RvRers who...aren't. The RvR is a perfect convergence of both PvE and PvP where both lead down the same road to the same point. Just like in DAoC. If Jacobs caves in to the PvPers...it won't be either nice nor healthy for this game.

To be quite blunt, I fully expect for this game to repeat the exact same mistakes of WAR...
Also, you could play swtor or tsw and just forget it's an MMO? Those two aren't much of an MMO, but boy are they SICK in the story aspect! Better than some singleplayers...

SWTOR and GW 1.

Followed by TSW, AoC, EQ2 and LotR:O.

This... it's basically a singleplayer game.

And what title isn't unless you take the effort to group?

Ones where the world is broken into instanced static hubs (without day or night cycles) that then send the player into further instanced halls, with NPC companions to fill out the group role?

This was designed by a singleplayer RPG studio to be a singleplayer game with optional COOP. There's no real cohesive social world to it.

That is my point. Almost every single mmorpg can be played as a single player game unless players take the initiative to group with others.

And ones that can't be damned for they are relics of the past!

@OP: Just play whatever sounds interesting to you. But there are some tricks n traps about(there always are!). Here are some useful things to know:

Jedi Knight is best played as a DPS. While a Tank sounds better lore wise(but there is nothing that really proves that seeing how both Mace Windu and Quinlan Vos are what you would call MDPS), there is a segment within game that just favours MDPS: you have to wait quite some time before you get a healer. Hence, MDPS. Oh and do ignore Sentinel AC for the time. It's so pathetic that it isn't funny-Guardian is literally BETTER at EVERYTHING Sent does + is more tanky + has better resource management. LOL!

Jedi Consular...it all depends if you want to play up close or from afar. Both are viable because you get both VERY early. Tank is your first comp and Healer second. I personally think that Shadow is overall better and more fun, but that's debatable. The story does make more sense for a Sage until you divorce your thinking from "Shadow = Jedi hitman". Really, it fits both because of different things. Play what you want here. Sage is VERY powerful in his Telekinectic discipline while Shadow's in-combat stealth is just...priceless.

Republic Trooper is...similar to the Consular. You get both the Tank and the Healer VERY early and it all depends if you want to be up close or back in the HQ. Story...is VERY layered and I would say that Dark Side suits Commando more while Light Side suits Vanguard more. YMMV. Overall, I'd say that Vanguard is better for solo.

Scoundrel...I suggest you don't tank :p ! Because you can't anyhow lol! Both classes are ridiculously fun. I would reckon that a story is more in tune to the Scoundrel(which you are no matter how the base class is called in game-see KOTOR for explanation) and if I must choose an AC for story purpose...Gunslinger. But both REALLY, but REALLY work.

Sith Warrior is the counterpart to Jedi Knight with one, crucial difference: you get your Healer pretty early. Hence, SW is best as a tank(it's not as if JK/SW tank has got dmg problems anyhow...). Story wise both could work: a stalwart and unflinching defender of the Empire(tank Jugg) or a swift hunter of Republic(Marauder).

Inquisitor is the counterpart to the Consular and this story really doesn't make any sense as an Assassin. It's a classical Palpatine/Kreya story after all. Sorcerer ofc!

Bounty Hunter is the counterpart to the Trooper and one of the most polarising classes in the whole game. This story is practically designed for a PowerTech(Vanguard counterpart-melee DPS/Tank). Why? Well, because you don't get a tank until lvl...42? 43? In short until last 25% of the story and it's simply painful to level as a ranged class without something melee. And to top it off, Bioware in its endless wisdom decided to push back the pushback immunity to level 36. ... Really smart Bioware! Here I would STRONGLY suggest PowerTech.

Agent is the counterpart to the Scoundrel and I would say that it's even better rounded than the Scoundrel is. But the story REALLY fits the Operative. Idk. I feel that as a Sniper you'd be more of a Jason Bourne while as an Operative, you'd be more of a James Bond. Just my hunch. Both work.

Now, the best for solo? Hm, for that to happen, there must be a confluence of both the companions and the class abilities. Personally, I'd say that a tank SW is nigh unkillable. But then again, so is tank PowerTech. I'll say that for the best experience you just choose between Jedi Knight(DPS+tank comp) and Sith Warrior(Tank+Healer companion). Either of them will work.

But! There is really no best. Some are more polarising(Jedi Knight, Bounty Hunter, Inquisitor) while some are less due to the presence(or the lack of it) of certain companions. Besides that, it's up to you what to play! For me it is:

 

Jedi Knight -> Guardian(it fits my JK better)

Jedi Consular -> Shadow(is really more fun)

Republic Trooper -> Vanguard(the stalwart defender of the Republic)

Scoundrel -> Gunslinger(just a Desperado with a Solo like twist)

Sith Warrior -> Marauder(Pureblood hunter, what would you expect)

Sith Inquisitor -> Sorceror(yeah, herp-derp!)

Bounty Hunter -> Mercenary(kinda an Outlaw/Sheriff/Marshall figure, it just fits)

Imperial Agent -> Operative(what really broke the stalemate here was the absence of healing at Sniper becasue my Agent is more an officer than a James)

 

And so far the stories are:

1. Consular

2. Trooper

 

3. Bounty Hunter

 

4. Scoundrel

(but each has its strengths and I STRONGLY encourage you to play them all!-the spaces aren't an error!)

It's actually quite easy to do:

-> Make a tank a character that is control focused NOT survivability focused. Ie: give him loads of interrupts, stuns etc. Think a combo of a Warrior(Earthshatter etc) and a Mesmer(interrupts, slows etc) from GW1. Potentially Guard too. Redesign Taunts so as to only reduce damage not force attacks. Or in other words: make tanks function the same in Pve and PvP.

See? EASY! But I don't really have any illusion that this'd be welcomed with open arms. See, I am a primarily a tank player and I would LOVE if it got this redesign. The idea that a Dragon/Sith Lord/Archlich/etc is so stupid to attack the most obvious target is.../meh. In this scenario, Healers would have to take care of anyone that got struck instead of just the tank and it would make it more dynamic for all parties involved. I don't understand why this didn't happen already tbh.

You are overlooking something, something that drives this crazy idea right into the ground:

"But what about EQ 2?"
I love this game and if the current track is of any indication...

I *COULD* play this the way I always wanted to. Reruns of character story etc. Go Bioware!

Look your game is dead and it's going to remain so. It wasn't really that good, let alone profitable. So sorry! SWGemu perhaps?

No, that is not a strange request. ANYONE coming from GW 1 will request that. That's how powerful the influence of HnH is-to the point I tried playing Necromancers and the like in other games only to realise that I don't stand playing a multi pet class( think Death Magic now -> funnily enough I used DM not for minions, but for mega dmg: Putrid Explosion + Rising Bile + Putrid Bile + Icy Veins + Deathly Chill + Signet of Lost Souls + Signet of Sorrow = :D <3 ). The games that I listed are the games you should put your attention towards. You could also try dual/multi boxing on a private server somewhere( or on live version if you've got enough money for that kind of foolishness ). This is all coming from yet another former GW 1 player, so you know you can trust me ;) ! How would I know the name of those skills otherwise? Or that sabway/discordway was unheard of until ANet broke one of its tenets with EotN: "NO NECRO HEROES UNTIL LATE and NECRO HERO COUNT MUST < = 2" -> which is quite obvious that they broke both of them when they added that bitchy looking Livia. At least to me she always looked bitchy. idk. How would I know those as well, hm? ;)

It is one of the better games, to be sure. One of the best? I can see it, but not at my place. The story is too tangential for my liking. But it still has a lot of features that more modern MMOs really should have(such as the ability to wear whatever in your appearance tab).

As for the DLC: Nothing new. Still, SOE used to publish full blown 100 hour expansions instead of ~5 hour long DLCs. It seems that the true colours are beggining to show...

That's just the difference between Morrowind and Skyrim. An example from both:

Morrowind: you are sent to...Galom Daeus(a Dwemer ruin inhabited by clan Berne). You are given detailed instructions how to get there, but not any actual tips on what to expect there or any fine details(while yes, they could give you more info and why is that? Well, because they are the frikin House Telvanni! But! It's your stronghold you are building and it's YOUR and YOUR responsibility ALONE!). Would an inhabitant of Vvardenfel really give such detailed instructions to another inhabitant? Most likely not and it would most likely look(the talk that is) like directions from a modern RPG. You can turn off map and you probably won't miss that much. Everyone knows about the famed Twin rock columns that act as a marker that you reached a lava tunnel that will lead you to Foyada Ibar-Dan(I think) which will in turn take you to Urshilaku camp/Kogoruhn/etc. You can navigate by directions and by landmarks PERFECTLY.

Skyrim: You are sent to Korvanjund(an ancient Nord city-quite famous at that!) to retrieve the fabled crown of thorns. This will directly influence the course of war for Skyrim and steer it either in jarl Ulfric's or Empire's side. Meanwhile, you are given ABSOLUTELY NO directions how to get there. You get a compass marker and you need to follow it. You can't get lost like in Morrowind where you misidentified the rock formation/the Dwemer/daedric ruin etc. Because you are expected to know all about Skyrim even before playing it lol! Yes, I understand that a Dovahkiin is of a Nord descent and that he'd most likely know, but! Don't cause such a schism between gameplay and story, ok? You can sort-of navigate by landmarks, but by directions...WHAT directions???

This is a perfect example how the RPGs have deteriorated. Very tragic.

What I meant with linear <-> open ended is, for example: NWN vs Morrowind. But yeah, I agree. The more recent, the lesser options you get. Realistically, you should get more due to computing breakthroughs etc, but no! Rotten, evil suits say NO! Want the perfect example? Ok! Compare:

-> Morrowind(2002)
-> Oblivion(2006)
-> Skyrim(2011)

As has been said above by both taman and rob, the issues are(some were rather):

-> poor animations: While it isn't as rampant as before, try using melee focus(channeled) attack. Idk, but last year it used to be still bugged. In short: your upper body moved without sync with lower. It was really jarring, especially in otherwise so nice game.

-> TTK/respawn/density: This was simply crazy and unnecessary. But some could say that is one of the keystones of TSW! Balderdash I say! There are other things that contribute to difficulty: ability wheel, mob mechanics, dodge. When you have 3 Ak'ab who keep charging all over the place, further aggroing other Ak'ab that patrol the area...that's not difficult. That's like Arcade machine-you are destined to lose, sooner or later. Did I have trouble with those? No, I didn't. But, realistically, I am not exactly an average player. I am talking about the Asylum on the Blue Mountain, ofc. There's that and the fact that sometimes it took longer to kill enemies than it did for them to respawn. And with crazy mob density, it was literally like fighting windmills.

-> combat mechanics: builders specifically. Unless you used 2x melee weapon and just bursted some shit down(they begin with 5x resources), it was quite tedious. 1,1,1,1,1,2,3,1,1,1,1,1... That is REALLY not interesting! It could be, but in order to enjoy TSW combat you've simply got to be t3h Rogue fan. Rogue from wow, ofc. If you couldn't stand Rogue...I wouldn't even try TSW if I were you. Because everything is combo pointed in TSW. But what do I know, right?

Then there is the issue of 7/7 skillslots. By any means, I don't find it lacking because, let's face it. In swtor, my Infiltration rotation is: F.Potency -> Spinning Kick -> Shadow Strike -> F.Breach -> Clairvoyant strike x2 -> Project(or its upgrade) -> Low Slash -> Shadow Strike -> F.Breach -> Spinning Strike. That's 8 skills. EIGHT. Where S.Kick isn't terribly necessary outside the CC, but then there's blackout, so it indeed is 8. Just a single skill more than TSW allows. It's exactly why I feel that games such as TSW or GW 2 should allow exactly 10 skills. There is NO need for more!

And, of course, some people just detest the action combat. Meh, what have you. It's the syndrome of coming to CoD for good, quality, sportsmanlike gaming. It just doesn't work that way, I'm afraid.

The only real complaints by this point? It'd be the builder mechanics. And the duplicate/useless/broken skills. But it's not much and it's definitely fixable by Funcom! Here's to looking to that!

I mean, current incarnation is merely a ploy to sell more CM shit. Why? By reducing the cost to dress, there is more money(credits) circulating which means that people are more willing to buy CM shit(on the GTN) which means that more people will visit CM and buy shit.

I mean it's super paper thin(almost transparent) and super greedy. Meh, why would an EA product care about its customers?
