I am talking about MMOs where you don't have to play(but can ofc!) as a potion chugging dps-er. Where during solo you can play other roles besides the (obnoxious drunkard) DPS. Where you play a role, if you will, and not an omnipotent hero. Stuff like:

-> GW 1 system

-> EQ 2 merc system

-> Swtor comps

-> sto officers

I detest playing an RPG in a Hack and Slash way. Look at it through DnD prism: I always enjoyed playing a bard, an abjurer, an enchanter(Buff sides of Transmutation are awesome as well!). If I willingly choose to play a dps, it should be my choice and not something forced by the game. This is why I love DA:O and detest TES(tactical combat vs pure Hack n Slash). Sure, I love crossing the line and playing a DPS on my versatile characters(rarely, but still :p).

It's what I call a "tactical" (MMO)RPG and would like to know if there are more MMOs out there that utilise these phenomenal systems during solo.


I did, but it just sparked a spark that was always inside me(he provided me with defacto names).

Long time has passed since I relished seeing another player in an MMO.

How about you? Are you hesitate of other players or do you actively look for them(even if it impedes your speed of progress)?

The thing is, I am not that keen on Black/White or White/Black combo(tho b/w is WAY better!). It is and Heavy on eyes imo. Therefore, this gray and Teal that I most often use are very smooth. Ofc, I could use Sand-y yellow as well( #FFBF40 ). Works just as well.

If more of you object, I'll edit the post and won't use gray again(even in spite of my love of it!).

I'm fully aware what each clan does. I've been a Skaven player for over a dozen years now.

What I'm saying is that every single one of those clans will do whatever it takes to win and get ahead.

Skryre will use plagues, Moulder will use Warp Technology, Eshin will use Ogres and Pestilens will use Assassins.

They've got their specializations but they've absolutely no objections using whatever the heck would get them ahead. There's no rule saying Eshin can't or won't use plagues, tech or mutated animals. They have, they do and they will.

They're rats. They've no morals or principals whatsoever when it comes to doing things the 'right' way.

If black leather thigh-high boots are what it takes then clan Eshin will dance for you. Whatever gets them ahead.

Ah, I understand what you were saying now. Yes, they'll use whatever gives em higher ground. More gameplay freedom that way = more awesome.

Still, I think that Skaven are a blight upon a world and should just be exterminated. But then again, I'm all for huge walls to be built(vs Chaos). Druchii cover them on the west with a set of Towers/a wall, Cathay have done the same on the east, the only question is "why hasn't Empire + Kislev done the same in the south C.Wastes?" . Against Skaven, I have no solution. Widespread purification of affected lands? Swiss level of purity/cleanliness? /shrug

It is actually funny how easy people of Warhammer could help themselves, but GW obviously doesn't want that :p

Can we please start using it? Look, these games(starting with EQ and wow) are clearly not MMOs. If they were, they would have a much higher tally of both things to do and the interdependance between them(the thing currently lacking in almost every "MMO"). Not to mention way higher accent on housing, crafting and things like that.

So, how shall we call them? Their original name? Diku mud? Sure, why not! I mean they are wee more advanced, but they still revolve around both combat and (ugly version of) instances. Log in, do, rinse, repeat. AD nauseum. We could also call them SPORPGs(SinglePlayer Online RPG), since most play them like that. Here's the catch. VERY few people play WITH others in these games, they mostly play BESIDE others. Studies showed this. Studies done both on the king and on the other orpgs. We could also call them OLGs(Online Lobby Games). Because That's how the second half plays them. Log in -> Q for a group activity -> do 1-3 such activities -> log out. This mode of playing should be fine in fps/moba genre, but in a genre that is supposed to be PERSISTENT? Where you are supposed to fraternise with others? Is a design choice that fosters asocial behaviour the right one here? Not to mention that this genre(whatever it is called-mmorpg it sure is not) actually segments people and puts them at odds with each another( PvEr vs PvPer , Casual vs Hardcore , Exploration vs killing vs achievments). A true MMO would use vs only to highlight the Faction hostilities(surely, you can not expect an Orc and a Dwarf to get along!)-IF THAT! Is a widespread use of vs(which breeds vitriol btw) justified in, what should be a, coop genre?

There's too much damn focus on gear, too much vitriol flying around! Why can't I just play these games and HAVE FUN? Wanna know why? ZERO challenge. Because it is all streamlined for a least common denominator. From there we progress to ZERO fun. And I am asked to do this AD nauseum? No wonder MMO players are so...bitter. 

About other games, there haven't been around for a long time. And the ones that have, are meh at best. Sure, Minecraft is a true heir to mud lineage, but it's not a terribly exhilirating game is it? Sure, networking and playing with others is REQUIRED in EvE, but the typical gameplay is even worse than this...dikumud gameplay. If we only had sth that combined the gameplay of wow with social aspects of EvE(customisability of Minecraft would just be an added benefit!). So my question to you, respect reader, is following:

Why do you settle with these subpar games? What's so magical about them?

(Sure, Minecraft/EQ 2 are a plenty customisable and sure, swtor has an awesome IP/story, but one could get such a better game for the amount of money being spent on these simple affairs)

I'll second that you can thank bli$$ and their, sadly, mega successful woof. See, woof has nothing going for it except polished combat and nicely designed instances. In fact, bli$$ is very apt at designing and masking Skinner's boxes.

But that's just the thing, isn't it? Everything feels so strangely removed from everything else in these MMOs. Crafting exists give you average(if that!) leveling gear(wtf!). PvP exists just because. RvR is most often excluded from the main game(it should be included)-even if it is included, it is done in some arbitrarily chosen zones, so most can just skip it. "Story" exists only to hide gear grind. Now let's take some examples, shall we?

-> EQ2: offers you infinite customisability. You can solo, you can group, you can PvP, you can craft, you can explore, hell you can even play as a housing decorator! It even went as far as to offer you to wear Armour you can't use in the Appearance slot AND to Equip a weapon in your Appearance slot(name one other MMO that does this). Gear is just A thing you can or don't have to peruse here.

-> swtor: offers you an awesomely crafted experience(more so now than ever). From the majestic storylines to the awesome IP to the new additions. You can solo, you can group, you can PvP to a max lvl all the while backed with an awesome story. Granted, it does rely a lot on combat, that is exactly why I keep saying that it should receive a crafting overhaul. Still, gear in swtor serves to propel the story onwards-kinda like a locomotor function.

Now for the typical woof clone:

-> you can only solo to the max
-> crafting is next to meaningless
-> housing doesn't even exist!
-> gear is there just because
-> grind...GRIND...G.R.I.N.D.!!!
-> everything is removed from everything else

Meh whatever. Is just like with girls. All the cute and smart ones get forgotten while monstrosities(I mean that!) such as Kim or Pamela get the highlight. In this sense woof is Kim of our genre( >.> )...
But it's more interesting to grind mobs/fight oranges!

Don't worry! I have it all planned. I'll use my 50 to feed others xp buffs(what's 10-20k for a 50 to farm?), thus keeping them on par. The only thing that is missing(imo) is hide head slot. Everything else I can get via clicking a ref link. I can do as much fps as I want(just opt in loot via "need" roll 5{?} times, PvP I don't care about. So, what am I losing on? Nothing actually that much.

One good benefit to not having money is the ability to see everything in a sort of 3D. You see ways around most things. Reversing back to pay 2 win seems like an impossibility now(because I really don't want to pay for meaningless things ever again-ok I want to support swtor, so it's not get the point!).


Something VERY OMINOUS came to my mind today(or yesterday):

All comms during leveling will be Basic, yeah? What's stopping them from imposing that blasted f2p limit on them then? Basically making leveling more ardous than it should be(or than it is currently!). How about that? That's the bad feeling I've been having I feel. Let's pray I am wrong.

I talked about this multiple times. It's the reason behind Cata/MoP or if you want, Disciplines in swtor. The trolls on rift forums called me a "troll" even in spite me presenting the idea in a quite layered and civilised manner. Anyhow, onto it! :

The problem with Rift(and the whole traditional MMO level design) is that you get all the interesting abilities TOO LATE. Example: I want to play a Purifier and I want to solo(stress free environment). In that order I have to wait until half the game has passed until I can actually do that(Fire Wall, Eruption). Someone would say "take another soul!" -> no? NO! I created a character with a Purifier in mind, not Shaman or whatever. How about this apology "do group stuff"(NO! "too stressful when playing with PuGlings") or this "is not a solo soul"("sure, neither is Inq in EQ2, so how can I solo just fine even without a Merc?")? "YOU HAVE TO WAIT!"(yeah and until then I quit the game twice over). It's not like I'm impatient either. I love working towards something and attaining mastery over it even more. But when there's no mastery to be gained(see below) that objective suddenly becomes very distant.

That is the problem. Sure, you shouldn't get everything right away like in GW2/TSW either(then you lose the will to level), but too much is too much! If the whole early game(what you just described) comes down to spam 1,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1,1,2,3,1,1,1,1,1, ... , you bet alot of people will be turned down. Rift is NOTORIOUSLY BAD at this aspect. In swtor disciplines, I'll have everything I need by mid game(even earlier!). In EQ2, I have quite an Arsenal by 20. Hell, even WoTLK was better at this. You have just ONE chance to engage players, then it's GG. It's not like it's teaching you anything valid either. Perfect example? Shaman and Bladedancer souls. Once you get "Rage of the North" skill(around 32), it suddenly makes an U-turn gameplay wise. The fact that your Jolt suddenly begins doing 220% dmg on top of a crit(eh...some 450% dmg?) instead of 101% doesn't help. Rage makes your next few attacks auto crits btw. Bladedancer? It is meant to be played in the...bladedancer style(keep those Rhytmic Actions up!). hurr durr! You don't get to experience that until at least 42. Even better example? Bladedancer's deadly dance. The skill that multiplies Attack Power after using a finisher. Core is 3% for combo point spent(for up to 115% value) on your NEXT combo builder. Modified, it's 190*AP on your next THREE attack skills. That's quite a bump in damage, you have to agree(~300% more DPS on average instead of 115%). Sure, it's only lvl 22, but WHY WAIT?

It's the VERY reason why go to MoP like system(simplification -> hybrids are eliminated, balancing made easier and players can enjoy themselves more at earlier junctures, you even have real choices!). Mind you, I believe that MoP dumbed down the system while Disciplines are merely streamlining it. There's a difference.

Eh, I think you get it. It's fairly simple: "Rift in spite of its advertised variety has rather limited options(too many copy/paste skills)". There are better games to play in order to pass the time anyhow.

I experienced it first with Trion(as per example), then with ANet(GW 2 is very weak when compared to gw1 imo) and finally with Bethesda(from Morrowind to Skyrim-yeah the deterioration of game quality isn't visible. At all!). Money rules, sadly.
I don't trust Trion. That in itself is a BIG issue.

Ever since daglar told the magical words(he was being interviewed right here by...Bill? Chris?) "Look, this is how I do it and how I do it is how it's going to be. I don't care if you like it or not, but it's going to be so. Either you will leave or I will because I will not allow for such things to be in Rift". He was talking about Arenas, but just look at how arrogant his tone is. He actually had gall to tell people to leave(a big NO-NO in communication sciences)! Really, would you trust such a person?

Anyhow, I thought nothing of it at the time(2 years back). Then he started babbling how he wasn't satisfied how large some servers got. Then he proceeded to close the two largest servers WITHOUT opening any new ones where most of...Fallout would land. Instead he directed most of typical PvErs onto the RP server. You can imagine what happened. Server bottlenecked, server crash, almost all of old time server players left only to be replaced by a bunch of typical PvErs. Needless to say, community went REALLY downhill. Not only that but they had to close it down. At least he had courtesy to apologise for mess he started.

Today, he isn't only arrogant, but two-timing as well! I can't tell you how infuriating his statements are(or they are /facepalm inducing -> pick your poison :p ). Rift in itself became a bland game what with no sense of community(trans server + trans Faction chat, low player # consisting of daglar yes men/white knights etc) what with direction they chose to follow.

I don't get it either. It is pure, unadultarated psyche manipulation. Evil one at that. Sure some find it fun. But then again, some find it fun to hurt themselves. That shouldn't be a measure.

I'll second that loot grind works awesome in games such as Diablo. But that's only one part what makes it fun. See, ARPGs have WAY more fun gameplay than MMOs do. They have, what I call, a kinetic momentum. In short n simple: you feel the impact of every swing of every cast. You don't feel that in (most) MMOs. Therefore, the awesome fun that is just cleaving/bashing/blasting your enemies while they fly away is simply gone. No kinetic momentum. This diminishes the fun while grinding and it diminshes it GREATLY.

With that said, I play MMOs as singleplayer games with chat. Once I reach "endgame"(read: the end), I simply roll an alt or I take a break and then roll an alt. I also love crafting and Roleplaying. Grinding? No thanks! But I do understand that some DO love it and that some use it as a means of hanging out. Me? I'd rather go watch Hockey or play some Warhammer(if I had money for it ofc :p !) if I wanted to hang out. But that's only me and I fully acknowledge other's wants and needs.

We should all be more open towards others imo.
They should just do something about their f2p, shouldn't they? At least we prefs, who sub from time to time, shouldn't have such a miserable experience. Beating a man won't make him work harder. Making him Happy will.

Ah that is more than ok!

It's similar to how swtor works. You switch from sub to pref then get to choose which chars you want to "activate". The only difference being, EQ does it automatically. It really, really shouldn't do that automatically.

This one I added is what would turn most from EQ2. I know why they have done what they have done, but it still is...obnoxious. Some people just have a need to chat(me included) and without the ability to do that...gameplay better be perfect. Fortunately, there is a LOT to do and it is, for all purposes, pretty fun.

So, if I purchase a character slot, I mustn't sub? Or it'll stay locked? That's THEFT! Or, if not that, a FRAUD. Felony, no matter how you look at it!

Ok guys. I need your advice. If you could I'd be glad if you asked this on SWTOR forums as well(prefered no forum access grrr...). You know who "you" is(Azaron, 7 , Ball mc Orb{sorry :p} etc). Here is the question(s):

Right! So I am forced to play 3,0(once it hits-I have NO desire to play prior-why? Because on lvl 26 I'll have TkT Wave, Turbulence AND ForceQuake-compare that to JUST TkT Wave on live) as a prefered. Maybe I could and would buy a plastic GTC if it was sold where I live. I can't purchase jack on net right now(exactly 0 credit cards{good, let them rot!}) and given circumstances, I am forced to play as a prefered. What I need help with is:

-> Concerning XP: To put it bluntly, I fully expect to hit roadbumps and for some planets to get up to orange difficulty. I have no problem with orange while on planets(on the contrary, I prefer them to be challenging), but the class specific missions that take place...somewhere like "Mandalorian Killer"(especially that one once I decide to re-run my BH :p) I REALLY don't want to have a room full of orange mobs(if you ever played BH, you'd know how...nightmare that mission is even on yellow or even below). So, what would be the quickest way to gather XP(no group activities-I play swtor as barely more than a singleplayer)?

-> Concerning creds: I know all about 350k limit-should I just go through the game while keeping a check on what I buy(I don't buy every skill or skill upgrade anyhow-sometimes I don't see any point{gee Stockstrike is SO useful to a commando!})?

-> I'd be very glad if someone gifted me an account wide "Hide Head Slot". I know that this is most likely not going to happen, so any other advice? Will the "click referal -> tick hide head slot -> lapse -> it stays ticked" trick work? Or have they done something with it?

I have a BAAAD feeling about this. Something tells me the meat and taters of swtor(the leveling portion where 90% of story is told) is going to get shafted from this.

First thing I am worried about is "What will happen to Ord Mantell? Will it still give comms?"

The second is "Will AMEs from planetary comm vendors still cost the same? It's bad enough as it is when you have more than one comp you want to use"

The worst thing? My bad feelings are seldom wrong. :/
