OP, concerning newer players not experiencing the thrill of an immersive world with a player driven economy, politics, and drama...

I think you really are just looking at the wrong medium. I experience these things daily through a fairly large and active roleplaying community, and it is incredibly immersive, unpredictable, and satisfying. Even a really fantastic sandbox mmo couldn't really compare to written rp with small tabletop elements, because the cost of visual gaming graphics and a "massively multiplayer" customer base, is the limitations required to maintain them.
I think its been a fantastic year+

Someone on these forums is always going to be crying that mmos are awful and dead now, because they aren't UO or EQ with high end modern graphics. But I feel that as long as both developers and players are still excited to explore and build upon the genre, then things are not just good, but on a positive trend to become even better.
That's what happens when you decide to hunt your mmos in the wild rather than just go to the grocery store.
Sylvari look fantastic!

Re : personal story

I liked them quite a bit, but its not like I intend to make them the focus of my gameplay. The prewritten stories provided by the game will always be secondary to the one I create myself while playing.

I think its the gingers. Their lack of soul has created a void in mmos which sucks in all your light and happiness until only angry forum comments are left to you. Damn them, damn them all.

Also? Playing a video game doesn't require much actual work or creativity on your part as a player, so it's not like you're able to look down on game devs from some lofty position here.

I'm mining out a dwarven fortress while posting this very message.

/smug

Keyword would be require.

I find that players who are willing to build and create within games, instead of just expecting to have an experience/challenge/social group handed to them -  are a lot less whiney about games in general.

Most games require payment of somekind to have a superior character. Usually its through time spent in the game, but can also.involve normal cash currency as well.
Playing games with a jaded, negative outlook might have something to do with it as well.
Because I want to play the game. I don't need it to have everything perfect, I just need it to be fun.

I think a large issue would be the growing segments of people approaching games as customers or amatuer game reviewers, rather than simply enjoying them as players. The market audience has aged, gotten jobs, possibly started families, and with that growing maturity and responsibility comes a lot of concern over money. Over getting your dollars worth. Over getting perfect customer service. Over getting things now and make it snappy, I paid for this. Despite the apparent maturituy, adulthood leads to a certain amount of entitlement, especially when someone percieves themself as primarily a customer. I won't say it's entirely incorrect, though definitely an unpleasant attitude, just that playing a game with that sort of mentality means that small issues will bother people like that to the point where an otherwise fun game becomes unplayable.

The growth of review blogs/youtube channels/and forums like these also gives some people a reviewer mentality. As they're playing the game they're actively seeking out negative aspects and then focusing on them so they can inform the world that x is horrible, y is an atrocity, and z is actually kind of fun but not enough to make up for the combined awfulness of x and y.

Neither of these types are going to wait for a game to come into it's own, or stick around long even if a game has a strong start.

You.

Unbiased in gaming only really matters if everyone had the same preferences and tastes, and they don't. So if you want to research a game, go to youtube. Watch a few first impresisons and Let's Play videos to get an idea of the game and how it plays. See if it's the type of game you'd enjoy. Then download the free trial and try it for yourself. If the game doesn't have a free trial, wait a few months and it will. While playing the game, talk to other players and ask their opinions. I would definitely say ask those in-game as opposed to those on forums, unless you want a lot of fairly jaded opinions and waving of mmo epeen.

GW2 has several different types of quests ~

Dynamic Events: these tend to involve a lot of killing and guarding, though there's not really a set amount that you, yourself have to do. These events scale to how many people are participating, and usually involve a little bar that trickles up or down as you progress depending on the goal (securing an area, decreasing enemy morale, sometimes they're timed and the goal is simply to survive through it.)

Hearts: heart npcs are karma vendor that you unlock by helping out. These generally require killing, collecting, fixing, interacting. You can choose what to do here, most of the time you won't have to kill a thing, you can mix and match these as you wish. There's not set amount of kill x amount of y, instead you once again get a status bar that fills as you help the npc out. They stack with the dynamic events, so if you have both in one area, its a nice way to kill two birds with one stone.

Personal Story: given your post I think you'll really like your character's personal story. The choices you make about their backstory and personality impact what personal story you play through (if you're an alto-holic this is A+!) As the name suggests, they're very story driven. They don't ask you to kill x, but rather compete objectives and simply survive. These can vary from  humorous fluff to potical espoinage, not to mention making life and death decisions that impact your personal piece of the world and the NPCs within it.

Quitting mmos isn't a terrible thing, however its better to quit because they're no longer something that belongs in your life. Quitting because you're tired of the same old thing is usually less about the actual games and more about choosing to play them the same way over and over again.
Story quests can be wonderful, but too often there's a lot of white noise busy-work quests that drown them out. Lots of players felt that only killing things to level up was too much grind. So games kept adding more quests to break up the pace of killkillkill and pad the exp for faster leveling. Fortunately I think of it as more of a phase than anything as games are starting to take out the more tedious aspects of questing like quest hubs, and highlighting the better parts (story and rewards)

SWTOR possibly took the latter too far, but it did get peoples positive attention for it. I hear TSW has satisfying, very story-driven questlines. GW2's questing is very optional, and the non-personal story quests insert themselves smoothly into the world as you play. Rift began with quest hubs, but have implemented an alternative via instant adventure (not a cure-all but a great step in the right direction by an already established game)

For myself, quests can be fun, but its the story I create myself for my characters as they explore the world that I really love.
Definitely APB, the customisation starts in the character Creator and just gets more amazing as you progress.
Maybe put some rp into your play, as that encourages interaction with players. Or if rp isn't your thing (and if it isn't please do stop using the mmorpg semantics argument) just be in chat and put yourself out there. Organize events, offer help, have fun and invite others to join. Sitting back and waiting for the game to force socializing for you wont fix the actual issue, because that kind of attitude means you wont take real advantage of such opprotunities anyway.

F2P games are on the rise because they can make more money. You might dismiss them as crappy companies with bad games, but at the end of the day publishers like Zynga and Nexon are making bank via f2p on a global level that makes 10 mill subs a drop in the bucket.

and u fools keep buying useless virtual items from them..........clap clap clap

ppl think p2w oups i mean  f2p is the way to go but its not...you WILL pay more on these games than p2p.

and all these crappy companies like nexon, frogster,EA etc etc WILL make sure of it

I already said as much? I never said it's good for players, just that it's a very effective business model. Try to read the full conversation before acting superior next time.

Zynga is the facebook game company, which have expanded the casual/social mmo market to a ridiculous degree. There's more people playing farmville on a daily basis than are subbed to WoW. As for Nexon, games like Maplestory and DFO each have over 100m+ registered players. Of course not all are active but just a small portion of that is extremely profitable because there are indeed players who lay down a ton of money for convenience and cosmetic items, not to mention ingame RIGs that are basically gambling, and fully capable of being addictive. A single player using a cash shop can easily be worth 1-5 subscribers.

I'm not trying to say their practices are wonderful, but they do payoff as far as profits go, which is why other games follow suit. I think its really a matter of accessibility rather than quality. Both WoW and successful F2P games are very easy to approach, the former because its become a familiar brand where people know what to expect, the others through lack of required commitment through monthly payments.
Because some people can't accept that others will play both games and so feel the need to pick one or the other. Since mmos are fairly dependant on having a large and active player base, those who support one over the other may feel compelled to convince others to play the one they want to "win."

Its like political campaigns, except people can vote for all the choices instead of just one.

Plus it can be fun and add an extra level of involvement with a game. A lot of people like having factions or teams to get behind, for the sense of competition and to feel connected to something larger.
