Why is it bad to pre order a game but ok to pledge hundreds..maybe thousands on kickstarter?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/15/13 2:18:42 AM
Kickstarter is for developing and publishing products in mind. You can help fund a kickstarter without actually getting the product or service, depending on what you contribute. Pre-order is with consumption primarily in mind. Objectively, they are not comparable. However it's not uncommon for people to treat kickstarter as a pre-order, and in that case they are very much the same. This is a question less about where you spend your money, but rather what your motives are, your level entitlement as a result of your spending, and how much you bitch on internet forums as a result. |

F2P is a scam and you should be ashamed!
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/10/12 10:00:36 PM
Nowhere in the OP do you bring up specific games or examples. Best to use facts instead of feelings when making statements like this. That said few people actually think f2p games are some sort of benevolent charity rather than a business model created with the intent of making money.

I am SICK and TIRED of the "more difficult" crowd
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 9/01/12 2:01:54 AM
It can be a pain to die a lot, but it makes finding the correct strategy more rewarding. Personal stories in GW2 can be ridic, especially if you're soloing it, but when I get stuck, I just leave that part alone for a bit and think of a different way to try things. Or I just keep going at it until my armour all breaks and then take a break from it. Even if I don't feel like a genius for not knowing what approach is best right away, it feels good to figure it out in the end. It doesn't feel nearly so good to just spam a macro and steamroll through content. Certain portions could definitely be tweaked not to be punishing to the point of discouraging further play, but I like it that the game respects me enough to expect more. |

I don't want a savior of the industry...
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/29/12 6:36:17 PM
The idea of an MMO savior at all is pretty much ridiculous. Can't we just be satisfied with finding a game that we enjoy playing? |

[Column] Guild Wars 2: Is Guild Wars 2 The MMO Savior?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/29/12 3:44:15 PM
MMOs don't need a savior. GW2 is simply a good game that's extremely approachable, which really should be enough for anyone who wants to play it. As for zealotry, you find that everywhere, it's the nature of the fan. Honestly, in these forums at least, I see more talking about Archeage being the AAA gamechanger that will "save" the genre. And soon enough it'll be some other game.

Every game has "failed" in the opinion of at least one player or another.

Casual and committed generally don't go hand in hand. I call myself a casual player even if I'm playing quite a bit, because my playstyle is basically "whateva, whateva, I do what I want!" Which generally doesn't involve committing myself to a schedule for the sake of others.

That high world completion -is- pretty impressive, but I imagine they're missing a lot along the way. I'm less concerned about the firsties and benchmarks than about the people who rush to eighty and then complain about getting there too quickly.

With the Failure of New AAA Titles, Why Not Just Re-Skin. Re-Boot One of the Classics?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/28/12 8:01:49 PM
I think re-skins would only hold niche appeal. At least I hope so because I'd hate to see mmorpgs go the CoD route.

I defiinitely do not think its an irl age thing. For one, "internet" and "gamer" age play more into how mature someone seems online. It's very easy to mistake someone's real age just by how they act online. Also, I think older gamers can be just as whiny and entitled as the next player, which is the attitude I do feel can make gaming unpleasant much moreso than simple inexperience. You know the type that always has to criticize and can never just sit back and have fun? The jaded and "discerning gaming elite" get all my sighs and eyerolls.

[Column] General: Wanting MMO Failure
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/22/12 6:53:44 PM
People who want a game to fail because they disagree with its design have the worst sort of First World mentality. It speaks of a very troubling disconnect between entertainment and reality, as well as shallow priorities.

Rather than a bubble, I see the mmo industry as a tree. With its roots in tabletop games, adventure games, muds, and the like, and coming together in a few, very strong titles that created the main direction of the genre, but eventually branching out into smaller, more flexible and sustainable games that go in various other directions. Some of those branches don't survive, either for natural reasons or due to intentional actions. Over time, new branches take their place. Lots of games have closed. Many more are about to launch or are in developement. It's normal and healthy. |

So I figured out why so many people hate raiding...
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/11/12 5:24:23 PM
Part if its design, part of it's players. But its odd that you say smaller size and less difficulty make people dislike raiding, as they make raiding more accessible And less of a chore to organize. Those two points are more the complaints of someone who already likes raiding than the pov of someone who'd rather not.

The best micro-transaction model - Pure Horizontal

But they're still games :/ |

The best micro-transaction model - Pure Horizontal
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/09/12 6:53:20 AM
Originally posted by Creslin321 Purely cosmetic gear doesnt have stats. So you'd still get the fun of working to achieve the real gear that turns you into a badass or w/e. But as far as your horizontal model goes? Players who don't like cash shops still wouldn't like cash shops. There's people complaining over GW2 "only" offering 5 default character slots and making player pay for more like its a heinous and unreasonable act. LoL heroes have a pokemon appeal, but real mmorpg characters and classes don't have that at all. You aren't picking just which hero you're going to play for this next game, you're picking a character that represents you in a persistant world for the next few weeks/months/or if you really like it: years. Not to mention the people who are unsure about what class they want to play, what if they decide midway that they don't like their class? Do they have to buy another slot or lose all their progress with this character? What if they don't really like the next class? If the player keeps finding situations full of lose/lose choices and buyer's remorse, how long are they going to stick with a game? Honestly? I really doubt there is any one-size-fits-all payment model that will suit every game and gamer, and so "best" is purely subjective and is only accurate on the individual level. |
