Final thoughts? The game will be F2P within a year.

Wow another excellent story!

Tell it to Readers Digest...

ROFLOL, so easy to post going F2P in a year..

How about this... Arena Net will finally see that they are giving away a good product and charge $10 a month for sub within a year..

Such a pretty game but it's not to my tastes, had my fill of fantasy mmorpg's now, they just don't have any longevity unless you like grinding or raiding (which is still grinding of a different sort).

But which mmo are you going to play that doesn't have grind, reguardless of the type on genre..

Heck, even in CoD and Battlefield you grind, its just how that grind is presented that the important thing..

I know that price is pretty standard, for subscription MMO's these days, but with the movement to Free2Play/Microstransactions, and AAA title subscription free games like GW2, I'm finding the $15 US per month pretty hard to swallow.

Once upon a time, it would be a no brainer to plonk down my $15 for a month of playtime with TERA... now days, I can't justify that cost, with so many other games of similar quality, out there for me to play instead.

So less than $1 a day is hard (sorry if i don't know your expenses)...

How can these dev hope to stay in business in sub model fails.. Heck ArenaNet should be lucky they stayed in business this long, not becuase Guild wars was good or anything but becuase they didn't have a steady stream on cash coming in, Xpac's only about cover the cost to develop the Xpacs with a few left over to profit from..

Why do you think the are now opening the cash shop, you need cash to maintain stuff and to pay staffers too along with customer service etc..

Person just have this mental block that $15 a month is alot (sorry again if i don't know all your expenses).. Heck to see a movie in NY is $22 (Imax), $14 (reg) and thats just for 2hr worth on entertainment..

Yeah what was the point of seperating imps and reps?  WoW launch had no PvP gear but skirmishes and ganking were rampant because the factions crossed paths so often and later the TM/SS zerg.  Alliance out numbered horde by a lot at release so faction imbalance doesn't matter as much when you can attack anywhere as opposed to something like ilum where we had 20 republic and well over 100 imps in the zone.

The only thing I could find that was semi fun is I play a shadow so I can kill imps all over the main base because most guards are weak so when they zone into ilum, trying to fly away, picking up dailies, or organizing for the flashpoints.  but meh.

I think they countered the poeple that grinded gear, I had a battlmaster set before 1.2 and it seems that grind is being made worthless.  BW is good at single player games, SWTOR is like 8 single player games and that is the extent of it.

My server is dead, they gave me a free month due to my original 3 month sub and I log  in and do the daily WZ and everyday is the same exact few players in those warzones.

Is a good game but not so much a good MMO.

Well said.... Ea had too much of a lofty expectations and with each passing month and budget growing they decided to release it and pacth it later.. Which might work for them if players have patience but with the rise of quality games going F2P and more MMO releasing over the next 2 years.. Ea is probably trying to come up with a good plan B at the moment..

Mounts variety

I was wonder that too.. I do know that persons that have the Collectors Edition also get a white lion, but i do not know if that lion can be purchased in game or not..

WoW PvP has been dead since Vanilla, and during Vanilla when they added penalties for killing townsfolk (for the entire raid).

Hey Bill, is that a picture of Tarren Mill circa Vanilla WoW on Bloodhoof? just curious.

also, I've never believed the 12million (now 10million) subs numbers. It's kinda like the Rush Limbaugh having 45million listeners....it's just not true. It's called hype.

12mil x $15 per month x12 months + 12mil x $49 per year for box sales...

I haven't seen any proof this income exists, and if it did, then it's a shame it wasn't ever used to make the game better....but like I said, it never existed.

WoW is popular - it was on the 'top 10' games shelf of many high street shops for maybe 5 years.

HAHAHA keep telling yourself that. I think that the game is seling well over in asia but in the West it stopped selling good about 2 years ago... if they have 1 mill EU and US subs im shocked, and the asia people dont pay a sub, they pay for hav much time they are gonna play.

Thing is they do have over a mil sub in Us and Eu, if they didn't then Activsion investor earning report would be false, and they could be sued..

Also, blizz states Active subs, not person playing. I know of person who still pay for WoW and haven't logged on in months...  And for that reason WoW will probably stay with the biggest sub numbers for the nect 2-3yrs..

cash shops and RMAH are evil until the game you like has them.

So sad, and so true...

=/

Actually Im fine with cash shops.   Unless the game is charging a sub fee.  Then yes, they are evil.

GW2 is not charging a sub fee.  So Im okay with it.

But if a game has a sub fee, and Im playing, and they then put in a cash shop.....man will you see me throw a fit then.  I'll accept one of the other.  Not both at the same time.  To me thats just stupid.

But  to others it isn't, as these dev's know theres a market for it..

I can see with you view though, as your choosing the lesser of two evils..

how bout no? i want ANet to make lots of money so they can make more games like GW2, or keep GW2 running for the next decade. cosmetic items and accelerated xp type stuff make sense for cash shop.

Well Said... +1000

So as long as it doesn't break the gameplay aspect, and they don't force it upon us.. I'm all for my fav dev's making money  in order to stay in business..

Let them get rich or not, we all gonna die leave it one day, but if you wanna be rich why not try working for them or go another route.

Now you want to start talking about a cash shop?

That's bad, but this is worse:

http://www.diabloiiiblog.com/beta/diablo-3-rmah-fees-patch-16/

So let me get this right... After the initial box sales of the game you want the makers to work for free until the next xpac comes out?

Also please remember these are services that they are not forcing anyone to use, and also it won't make or break the game..

It just baffles me at times, but i bet if anyone who is against it was working at either comapny (blizz or Arena Net) you probably would see it different..

PVE games do not have longevity anymore. Wham bam thank you maam. 6-12 month life span's why the heck do they keep making these drive through MMO's.

Because they make money. PvE MMOs far outlast PvP MMOs by the way.

I am not comparing them to PVP MMO's (but if I did EvE 9 years old ahem, DAOC STILL GOING lol)  I am comparing them to older PVE MMO's. They have no longevity anymore. X Game launches, 3 months go by, game bleeds subs. In TOR's case it's understandable they fail to listen but attracting casuals to yor game gets you this result. A short shelf life.

Its also the lofty Sub numbers Ea was targeting...  People were paying attention to that, and the state that the game launched in and the path that it continues to go down, is not holing over...

My predict is TOR will drop between 500-600k subs and thats being generous, becuase with the rise of quality MMO going F2P persons are goona say why pay for ToR at all...

Also, it's as if Bioware don't know where to take the game.. I knew this voice over on everthing was goona bite them in the rear, as it will slow new content no matter what they think or say.

Bit Off Topic;

The MMO market is so crowded and so diverse now, that even if you offer something unique you have a high chance to fail and maybe have to fall back to cash shop methods to stay aflot..

Even Arena net is seeing this now, as i sure theyll add cosmetic stuff to guild wars 2 online shop.. Revenue from box sales is just there to re-coup dev cost..

I never have...but you're right.   Why do folks even buy from them.  It makes no sense to me.

Simple, instant gratificattion...

When gold buyers see ''X'' item going for so much and they have so little, they take the quickest means of getting ''X'' item to satisfy them...

No matter how easy dev's try to make a games economy, there is goona be chock points (hard to obtain items), and that can lead persons to gold farmers because they probably have no time or just lazy to go out and get the items..

Arena Net & Blizzard see this, so now they set stuff up to get a piece of the pie...

Was in the stress test, hope to get more opportunities to test the game more extensively later on.

Dominus could be really cool. It's good to see developers with a clear focus - they're not trying to please everyone by just tacking on some limited PvP to a PvE themepark, they're building the whole game around PvP and they are building upon the great foundation that DAOC is.

Lots of people have been wanting a DAOC 2 and this is probably it.

The only issue I fear is that some crowds won't like the sci-fi style of the game, but on the other hand other crowds are tired of the fantasy stuff and actually want a different look.

Your right, as a sci-fi setting i don't see it grabbing the crowd a fantasy type setting would grab.. Persons may say they they are tired of the fantasy setting, but those setting most of the time pull the big numbers..

but make no mistakes that you will be doing quests, have tons of instancing, and that the holy trinity of tank/dps/heal is in full on effect.

Revolutionizing PvE as much as TOR does/did with VO.

Just a new, shiny package for the same old thing we've been doing since 2004.

THIS ^^^

Its just the same old presented in a different way... And at times thats what is needed, different Presentation..

Presentation can fool your audience into thinking your being revolutionary..

GW2 use of the none trinity way, isn't new but its presented in such away, that it just look cool, and the same can be said of its WvWvW..

NO need to re-invent the wheel, just change the rims...

Development cost break even theroycrafting. So my calculations are just with assumed numbers, if anyone has actual numbers I would really like those to make calculations that are founded on real numbers not just assumed numbers.

The average development costs of a single platform game are about $10 million. Since GW2 isn`t a usual single platform game lets just assume three times the cost so 30 Million.

Lets assume the price of a single game will be $60 for a box (I´m not calculating digital sales which are cheaper). Let`s also assume a box costs $10 to press the dvd and make the box etc, which would be quite expensive. Leaves $50 to cover the development costs and running costs for the employees etc. For sales you usually calculate for the comming 3 years.

On average you sell anything with an average of 40% profit. That would be $24 for a $60 box. So we would have 60 - 10 -24 = $26 per box to cover development costs.

If Arenanet even calculated with 1 million boxes sold in 3 years that would be 26 million Dollars for development and running costs. That is a bit below what I assumed. But as you can see even with 1 million sold you easily break even.

Obviously the real numbers will be a lot different. But you can see you don`t have to sell 2 million copys to be successfull.

To show another example:

Quote Wikipedia:

Although BioWare has not disclosed development costs, industry leaders and financial analysts have estimated it to be between $150 million and $200 million. If accurate, this would make it the most expensive video game ever developed.[12][13] The game had 1 million subscribers within three days of its launch.

I`m guessing they didn`t break even even on 2 million copys sold.

GW2 will have cost ~$100m at least. Paying 250 developers/artists for 5 years isn't cheap.

Also, retail generates roughly £12 per 'box' ($18) regardless of platform and digital generating around £30 ($45) for a £35 (~$50) game on steam for a big release. 50% of sales will be via digital at least, which we can see has massively bigger profit margins.

We can see that if this was a console release they'd need ~5m sales to break even. But because it's PC they need about 2-3m instead.

This, and that why i say everyday ArenaNet is lucky they choose a publisher like NCsoft, because if it was EA or Activision i'm sure they would say, at least charge $5 a month..

Thanks for sharing that!

I also noticed the ranger was doing a bit of tanking too...haha

ROFLOL, i can see it now..

5man grous go in a dungeon. Party says, Warrior/Guardian go in and build aggro, while we then dps''... All starts to attack mob, few second after, mob starts wailing on the thief, thied cries out... Taunt him off me already, guardian/warrior says i have no taunt skill, mob goes beserk wipes the group.. Group member claims this system is sillly, others in group agree. Group disbands, with some quitting the game or start to flame on GW2 forums on why they feel the system is broken, other join in and then you start hearing this game sucks...

Not in the first year unless they release on consoles.

Well said... With all the hype surrounding GW2, it surely sounds like it will move alot in the 1st yr, but MMO's all together are mostly (not all) bound to Pc. And for guild wars to sell well over 2mil copies in first year its hard, because MMO players also play console games and you got some nice AAA console game coming out over the year too..

There is just too much diversion out there for it to move that many in less than a year and its not on console also.. I also think the console version will be launched for next xbox/ps and maybe even Wii U..
