I don't usually post but hearing about TES online and hearing about it's features has just made me and hundreds of more people very angry. The very fact that they are using the hero engine and are scrapping the real time first person combat is infuryating. They've gone back to the out-dated holy trinity with action bars and dice rolling. It didn't work for RIFT, SWTOR, FFXIV and now TERA. How do devs not realize that this is NOT what we want...

Here's the thing, though it pains me to say it.

These companies don't listen to words from people posting on a message forum, especiallyl when, despite the volume of the complaints (as in how loud), people go out and buy the games anyway.

They listen to the numbers, and the numbers say "more people want a theme-park style MMO modeled after the style WoW popularized". So that's what we get.

In Final Fantasy XIV's forums, there were a lot of people insisting they would never subscribe to the game when SE re-instated subs. Guess what? They said so over and over again, in threads that went on for pages. A lot of those people are now subscribed, while still complaining about the game. So at the end of the day, which sent the louder message? Their complaints, or their wallets?

The only way they'll listen is for those words to be converted to numbers, which requires more people to stop buying the games.

Unfortunately, many people generate more heat than light.

awesome answer.. I for one will buy Eso, if it's not fulfilling after first and second month, I'll unsub and maybe return later.. Like there direction or not, person should realize it's hard to capture the feel of the single player game in an mmo environment.. Even if they were to go more sandbox than theme park style, it still wouldn't feel like the single player. I say give them a chance, if you don't like it then guess we can then wait on a next dev to try something.

D3 for me, simple because of high production value and loving the D series... I will also get Torchlight 2, just can't beat $20 price tag...

If PoE comes to console maybe then i'll play it, but otherwise my time will be split between D3, Tera and WoW....

I think it is disingenuous to say that TSWs questing requires thought. SOME quests require you to gather information from the surroudings, like looking at the wall of the church for a particular hymn number. MOST quests do not, and are a multi-stage fetch and/or kill kinds of quests.

The unfortunate thing is that while the environments are really beautiful and they set the right mood, but the character animations and the combat are severely lacking. It's really quite reminiscent of GW1 combat. You have a ton of skills to choose from but can only have 7 active (and 7 usually complimentary passive) and you usually end up spamming one thing to gain charges for you to use another thing, rinse and repeat.

Think of it this way- yes there are guns and elemental abilities and swords, but ultimately you have 1 primary attack that you spam to build up "charges", 1 "heavy" attack that uses these charges, 1 ability that is an AOE, 1 ability that applies some brief vulnerability, and 1 snare/slow/stun. Higher level abilities may become more varied, but this is all that I have seen so far.

The only time you move in combat seems to be when a very obvious visual cue gets place on the ground indicating that a mob is powering up an attack, including the radius and direction of the attack. So you stop attacking and move. Ugh.

So the question for many is: Does the environment, some quests that involve some degree of investigation of the surroundings, and some interesting mob design, make up for poor character models and really uninspired combat that we've all seen before?

I had really high hopes that this game would bring the horror genre to life.

The game could be good but that guy the OP is referencing is grossly exaggerating.

Ba da bing! good breakdown of combat Charlizzard. the telegraphing of specials by mobs pretty comical. jump behind and start the sequence again. forgot to add, good breakdown of the whole "deep thought" thing

i'm surprised more have not noticed how much of this game is lifted directly from anarchy online. except anarchy online is better, this game is anarchy online two but funcom totally fumbled delivery. definitely not ready for prime time, i really hope they decide to push it back.

So i take it that they are rushing another out the door, to recup cost with Box sales.....  If thats the case, then thats STRIKE 2 against them for me.. 1 more chance to srew up and if they do, no more looking there way..

Cryptic screwed STO @ launch but since going FTP and relaunching, its much better now... So hopefully these guys can learn..

I agree, this game will be TES in name only, it will be nothing at all like the sandbox rpg's that made the IP popular.

Put what worked in RPG into an MMO environment, it might not work so well, thats one of the many reasons BETH didn't want to make an Elder scroll Game..

Its almost impossible to capture how the single player game plays in a MMO environment..

These guys aren't touting anything revolutionary... Basically all they are doing is making a prelude to all the events of the single player games

Are you kidding me? TERA's graphics were beyond bad.

How exactly are they bad? Maybe not your style but saying they are bad for an MMO just makes you sound like someone who just hates the game. Don't lie to yoursel.

Or it makes him sound like someone that is not into Asian Anime style graphic MMOs...like me.

Now if WoW had Age of Conan style REALISTIC graphics, I would actually think about going back to it...before remembering the game is a second job and I left it for that reason.

Remember that graphics and aesthetics are completely different things.

When someone says they don't like "Asian Anime style" and like "Realistic" that really means they prefer one aesthetic over another. WoW's aesthetic is cartoony with mismatched proportions and a very vivid color palette, that has very little to do with the graphical fidelity of the game itself since ANY style can be done with poor to excellent graphics.

In terms of aesthetics Tera is definitely polarizing, especially when compared to something like WoW which completely avoids any uncanny valley effects due to going for the outlandish and not the realistic. But if you are arguing graphics then it would frankly be silly for anyone to say Tera had bad graphical fidelity when it is clearly one of the best looking, if not THE best looking MMO currently released. After all, just because the OP wants to update WoW to Tera online levels of graphics does not mean he wants to change the wow AESTHETICS to the same style as Tera. Maybe he just wants better draw distance, more detailed environments, better textures, rendered character models/armor, improved lighting effects, etc.

Your sir, are very educated...

/cheer

a bit off topic but does anyone know why Bioware didn't use unreal engine for Tor..

Because in Tera, it seems to be come than capable to handle the tasks..

To be honest, WoW's graphics are only one of several issues. Seems to me, the content that Blizzard keeps adding is not substantial enough to support even 3 years of solid gameplay let alone 7.

The fact remains, once you get to max level there are still the same boring old raids and end game grinds. That hasn't changed and is not enough to hold off players for 7 more years.

Expansions that add more levels, zones, dungeon, raids, battle grounds, arenas, gameplay mechanics , races & classes sure will. Next expansions adds in a new continent, Race, class, raids, BGs, arena, Pet battles and other shit.

Also WoW is very easily modded by Blizzard they can steal a mechanic from any mmo and make it their own.

I think people forget how amazing Blizzard really is. THese guys make the best games be it Rpg, RTS or MMO.

How hard would it be for them to add in voice acting to wows future expansions to crush SWTOR? Or world events similar to RIFT or WAR if they wanted to? Blizzard can take whatever they want and do it better than the developers they stole it from. this is why the game has over 10 million active players and SWTOR & RIFT are sitting there with empty, dead servers.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be fair WoW has dead servers too, mainly becuase blizz has given the population so many servers to choose from is ridiculous and also active play time has gone down, which blizz expected..

That being said, your sooooooooo right about blizz coping person idea and improving on it. It makes you wonder how the ones that came up with the idea didn't see it..

Well if you looking for gear progression then yea you go that route.. There are person out there that won't raid but find other stuff to do @ max (eg max fishing or play collector and try to collect all pets...). May not be fun to you but other have used it to past there time without worrying about gear progression.

True be told, dev's can never have enough stuff to do @ end game to please all.. If they have stuff and make those stuff take like 3months to aquire etc, then persons will complain that is asking too much, and maybe even quit..

I am back to wow after i tried so many other games . even my beloved SWTOR. I know haters gonna hate this like always but numbers speaks for themselves. Everything else what i have tried is just so poor compared to wow. It is simply best classic mmorpg pvp with so interesting classes to play. I can tell you how good it is if i say that i leveled now all classes to 85 and i am not bored. So many battlegrounds so many achivements where you get something for reward, awesome huge lands with some kind of special mystical aura and magic sound of forgoten lands. Now we have Darkmoon Faire and i want so hard to get that mount, you can play so many interesting  mini games to get  Darkmoon prize tickets, it is so awesome and so unique that world of wow. What i would like to see is something like Tera online graphic--well, that would rock and make wow really immortal

Won't happen.. Blizz aim is to get WoW running on a many system as possible without users feeling the need to upgrade...

Heck even D3 or Starcraft don't stress a system..  Its there style when making a engine to make it easy on the system but also pretty to some extent...

@ caged9087

I think ddo uses a different ruleset if I remember correctly.. Also the foundry is meant as compliment the game not necessarily be the main content distributor. Think of it like the toolset Neverwinter knights or Skyrim has, but it's not too much mmo out there where a user can make there upload there dungeon idea for others to play..
@ staran
Foundry is meant to compliment it.. The team that's dedicated to Sto is using a way out dated foundry tool set and they said it won't be updated until Neverwinter is done..

I'm hoping great things with Neverwinter, the awesomeness Of not constantly spamming LFG or LFM is good and keeps things moving..

hope they take there time, as PwE seems to be giving them all the time they need to get it right and not greedy Atari, saying release it now finished or not..
@ FrodoFragins

True, but some will go against the curve and try crazy combination.. Think 4 mages with one healer.

Just like 5 man arena, first time I faced off against a 5 man rogue team, I was like WTH just happen..
Abit off topic, but mmo are one of, if not the most risks a development studio can take.. No wonder these games that had potential got canned..

One, you have to have GM, 2) good customer support, 3) try to make a game that pleases you the dev and appeal to a good amount of person to stay profitable..

No wonder the genre seems more of the same with every release.. The risk involve trying to do something new far beats any other genre of gaming..

Just my 2 cents..
@ Zeprimus

You said it best bro... Mmo if they are to survive financially, they will have to start mixing with other genre and add stuff that are changing with times..

@ Mothanos
Also with time, every mmo community tends to get worse, I guess you can then say to yourself it's time to change game..

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The article is right though.. Pugs who plan ahead will find it
Abit easier, but as with most pugs, they will kick whoever they feel is making the most mistake, instead of talking it over and try to improve..

I'm looking forward to mists, as I like the beta and the direction it's going, but this mode i'm skipping all together regardless how cool it sounds..

As the title says, what do you think the future holds for TERA. Will this game end up like RIFT for example, getting a decent amount of praise and still failing to hold up amongst the likes of WoW etc.

Or does this game have a bright future, if so why?

I'm asking as im hestitant to dive into it just like i did for RIFT after coming from WoW and finding the novelty wear thin after a few months of play...

I say don't be hesitatnt to dive into an mmo with the fear it might ''Fail''.. Play it becuase you think it might be fun for you!!..

I just can't see why does some persons  think not having a hugh sub number signals failure.. Damn

I say from the number of  sub a game has, that it turns a profit its all good for that game.. When the game stop turning a profit then thats different...

RIFT wasn't expensive to make and maybe isn't as costly to run as per WoW, so the subs RIFT has currently is more than enough to make it stay profitable and open..

Tera has been out for almost year and a half (korea), so if they haven't been turning a profit thats there fault... Sub number will be hard to guess with tera, but don't let that stop you from experience the game because you think it might fail.

Tera isn't bad or great (just right in the middle) and isn't the second coming of MMO. Its main selling or marketing point was that its an action mmo, and that i feel it does well, all the other stuff is standard game..

WoW didn't re-invent mmo, all it did was built on past success, change past mistake and in doing so, so happend to appeal to wider audience (not to mention blizzard fans).

Also the trend in mmo Now-A-days is this... Try to ''burnt out'' oneself to reach end game before the 30days is up, then if you don't like end-game you either make alt or maybe start to complain that there is nothing to do @ end-game... Or the option alot choose is to quit and maybe return in 2-6 months...  But its in this period most dev's panic and wonder if those will return and what can they do to make them return faster..

What amazes me in all of this, is if a new mmo is launching and it does nothing to move the genre forward, persons start claiming its destined to fail and will go FTP in 3months...

ALL in ALL, try the game if you think you will like it, not because your trying to predict the future and think it will fail in "X" time..

Maybe someone may try developing an mmo that has servers with different dificulty setting, Casual solo or hard grouping servers, could be viable option.  I dont mind forced grouping because thats the way I prefer to play MMO's, and probably why I liked FFXI so much.

Path of Least Resistance will win.

THis....

Thing is the average MMO players gets that grouping is apart of the game, but no matter how much XP bonus dev's stack on grouping or whatever. Soloing beats out the ignorance other player might bring to a group or raid..

Life as it is, is aggrevating enough already why make your game experience be..

Also the different server choice maybe a good and bad choice.. Eg, person who are not so skill don't want to be or play with the not so skill crowd, so more than likely they go to the hard servers and try as they might to become skilled...

As it is now in Tera, grouping gives more XP, but hardly anyone want to stay with you until you finish your step of a quest.. Most have the menality "I'm done now lets move on..."

@ DannyGlover

Well said, the lore alone is what makes it an Elder scroll game... seeing as this is set before the events of the last 3 games in the series, first person isn't neededy.

What I like is them not claiming it the next evolution or innovation for mmo..
They are just basically, using the elder scroll name and universe.. Sure there is gonna be reference here and there.. But just like ToR they are trying to capitalize on the license, but its good they own the license, so hopefully they won't need a big sub base to running..

The pics look good and i'm sure they are able to use the engine better then tor did as its now more complete etc.

some person want a evolution in mmo but that won't happen, because the risk factor involve is too great.. Stray too far from the norm, you risk a faster rate of decline and closing down.. Be too close to norm, you risk people getting bored and move on quickly.. If I was these guys, have a cash shop that provide trivial stuff at launch, such as Xp boost, Weap and armor skins etc, all those stuff help lessen the burden when you start loosing subs and you'll be missing out on the generation Now club..

Here's hoping this turns well and not rushed..

At this point I am extremely cautious of this game for one key reason.  From what I understand, it's not being made by Bethesda, it's being made by some development studio that their parent company (Zenimax) owns, and the lead (Matt Firor) previously worked at Mythic.

Sooooo....it's essentially just some studio making an MMORPG that has the Elder Scrolls IP.  Yeah...I'll believe this will be good when I see it.

These guys started zenimax after they left mythic after it was bought by Ea...

Most of them did DAOC, so i'm hoping this turns out good...

Graphic make it look like a better looking RIFT (minus rifting)... 2013 release can't come sooner (hoping no delays)..
