The author did NOT do his homework with this one.  Aion shouldn't even be on the list.  While they should maybe have had 1 or 2 more servers open; I'd probably put this in a top list of successful, smart, well planned launches.

1.  Yes there were people that waited 2-4 hours to get logged in to a server.  HOWEVER, there were no regions, none whatsoever, that required a wait in a queue.  The people that waited in queues chose to do so because they had decided on a server ahead of time and did not want to switch to one of the open servers with which had more room for population growth.

2.  The server Queues along with also controlling faction numbers per server was also very smart.  READ THIS:  Oh trust me I was ticked off trying to get a toon made during head start on the "right server" on the "right faction", but from a long term perspective this was the right hassle to cause people that weren't willing to move to other servers.

3.  Why......???    Warhammer.  Yup.   Warhammer.  Aion did not want to have a knee jerking reaction to the demand by creating more servers when they had plenty they could force the game population to balance out on.  Aion did not want to have low pop desolate servers that would then have to be merged and downsized like Warhammer had to do once the initial month launch hyped died down a bit.  NCSoft  wanted to have HEALTHY & BALANCED server populations for the actual subscribing community to play on.

Final Thought:  Sure they could have made a few different choices, but I think NCSoft played this one pretty close to right on.  Especially once they fixed the personal shop afk to skip the Queue issue.  After 1 or 2 weeks of the game being out tops I don't think anyone even mentioned anything about a Queue time or being mad about it.

Ok all done.  Carry on.  =)

This is one of the better replies about aion. Something everyone is forgetting to mention they said there would be queue times before head start. That they were going to limit the number of players let in at first to keep the starting zones from being overcrowded. Then slowly let more people in if i remember correctly the first few hours they were only letting in 15% server cap then was bumped to 25% they did not get to over 50% till launch. This is smart planing imo not a bad launch.  I was on the 2nd highest pop server and only waited in queue over 2 hours 1 time. Granted that is a long time but if i chose to change to a lower pop server i would have only had a 30 min wait. Thats not as bad as some of the queues that wow had not to long ago and its been out for years.

www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/worldofwarcraft/show_msgs.php

People say that there was a 7 hour wait but there was never anyone that had to wait that long all the screenshots you see with 7 hour queue time are wrong. The system was new and had nothing to base a average wait time or how long it was taking people to get in.

Ok some people don't agree with the AION pick.. Let's see. What a game is? The box? The manual? The screenshots? The forums (hell yeah for the trolls)? No.. it's the game itself.. And what is the most important thing of all? To be able to f... play it. Waiting 8 hours or even 3 hours to play a game it's not ok. Among all those people who tried AION u could find working men/women who simple could not log in and play during their free hours. So yes.. it had a bad launch. They were also very slow resolving the problem with the addition of new servers

Aion had one of the best launches iv ever seen. All the screen shots of crazy que times are not right. The very first day of head start was bad but they were limiting the number of people that could log in at one time to keep the starting zones from being swamped. The 2nd day of head start was bad when i loged in it gave me a 10+ hour que time but it olny took 1 1/2  hours to log in at peak time.  Que times stayed about 1 to 2 hours till they patched the private stores limiting the amount of time people could idle  in game that was like a week after launch then it went to about half hour at most on weekend nights. And i played on lumiel the 2nd highest pop server. People bashing aion or any game over something they know nothing about is bad. WoW's  and vanguards launch was much worse than aions. Argue what you want about WoW but the constant crashing, que times and extended mantance for days even a month after put it above aion.  Dose not matter if wow is or is not a better game than aion that is a different argument.

I'd rather go up against someone multi-boxing than two individuals on vent. No multi-boxer is as good as two skilled people.

Then you've never seen the 5's multiboxing elemental shaman pvp team video in WoW. In the BC era this was quite a large problem, and you'd see 3,4,5 shamans all on one KVM quite frequently, what was sad is how well it worked :(.

Aion is not wow good luck getting that to work with the way skills chain.

Aion dose have over 3mil subs and its not even out in the west.

Aion is not going to be a WoW killer. It's a decent game but it has a number of things going against it. Those things being anime art style, Gameguard and the fact that it doesn't really offer anything new to the genre.

I like the art style perosnally.  Wow has not added anything new to the genre just takeing what outhers have done or going to do. Ill give you that gameguard dose suck but  the olny thing really going agenst it is the people that want Aion to fail.

This game is not even remotely like lineage no more than its a mmo (well mabey look kinda the same).  But i assume your talking about lineage 2? L2 is older than wow and its huge compaired to wow at least old world wow. This is probley why you dont see people. L2 is all about the end game and takes a huge investment in time to get there therefore people dont make alts like you whould see in games like wow where you can get to the end game in less than a week.  ill give you that prices are high but 10m adena is not that much in the end mabey like a few thousand wow gold.  More to the point L2 is a really great game it just has some bad stuff going on with it like farmers.

To make it clear your missing the point of the thread. Its not that it will "kill" wow and they will shut down. Killing wow whould be hurting them where it counts, in the bank. And worldwide Aion may do that if it takes 10% of wow players it whould be devistateing to blizz. You may say thats not much but were talking hundered of thousands of dollars in lost income for blizz.   No game can ever "kill" anouther but after x-mass wow may not be the #1 mmo in the world.

Wow Killer is a silly title for this.

Could Aion grab a lot of Chinese users from WOW?  Probably.

Will that affect the bulk of WOW's profit?  No.

Will Aion attract US and European players?  Probably not.   Its beautiful, but I thought L2 was beautiful and it was the shortest sub I ever had to an MMO.  The Asian MMO mindset is simply different than the Western one.  I would shoot myself in the head before playing a game that required so much grinding.

The WOW killer will be the next blizzard MMO - they are the only company who consistently makes top notch games in the West.  Wish it was different...

I have no idea where people get the mind set that AION is a grind. AION IS NOT A GRIND. The time I have spent playing this game on the Chinese server I find it quite fluid and quick, when the quest says collect 6 of these from so in so mob you are not killing 45 mobs (WoW), you kill like 8 (AION).

The only support for your argument that Asians prefer the grind type mmo's is the fact that WoW has 5 million Chinese subs.

Shhh dont tell them its not a grind i dont know about you but i dont want a bunch of tards playing with me.  All jokes aside people call it a grind because they have to work for something and invest time in it. Therefor if its not handed to you its a grind.

No game has never killed another so what makes you think the biggest game in the history of mankind will be defeated by an asian grinder?

Because the biggest game in history of mankind before wow was a asian grinder.

Is it just me or dose anyone else not care if aion kills wow. As long as its a good game i could care less if 80% of wow players stay with wow.

WOW is the olny thing that can kill WOW.  I think the way the term " wow killer " is being misunderstood/misused is to be blamed for the disagreements in this thread . People think of a few diffrent ways to interpret it.  My way to take it is a game or games that will return wow to average sub numbers.  Personally I think Aion may have a chance to help do this (if ncsoft can keep the bots out).

I currently play wow or i should say i have a sub to it.  The olny time I can bring myself to play it is on raid nights to play with my friends.  I personally love/hate the way wow has changed, mostly hate. They have some great things they added like flying mounts and battlegrounds. On the flip side they cant keep class balance and with 2 xpac there is still no leveling curve to speak of. In short wow is trying to be everything to everyone and is killing its self by doing this.

I think alot of players like myself feel like this and are waiting on anouther quality game to come out to play.   There are alot of outher quality games out like Lineage 2 and Everquest 2 but noone likes to feel left behind or play in empty zones trying to figure out what to do where to go by themselfs(a least i dont).

In short to sum up my rambling thoughts, Aion will not kill wow, wow will kill wow.  With that said Aion will do very well.

All of the us servers are full atm with 2 being down probley why your geting put on a ocenaic server.(the olny one not full)

This is why pre order beta is bad.......you guys think your special, and turned the beta user into a "paying user".

Open beta is to test the login servers/main servers, and beacuse its a test you get a free look at the game, o wait you had to pay.

Wrong.  No one "paid" to be part of the beta by pre-ordering the game. The price you paid for the pre-order is subtracted from the price you will pay for the retail box when you go pick it up on launch day. So if you paid $5 on your pre-order, the retail box will cost $5 less on launch day. Also, if you decide during beta that the game isn't for you, you can cancel your pre-order and get that $5 back. So you're not out any extra money to test the game regardless of if you end up buying the game or not. Of course this probably varies from store to store, but everywhere I've ever pre-ordered or bought games from this has been the policy.

Wrong. Some people used the fact of beta access as one of the deciding factors when they bought the pre-oreder. Therefore, those people "paid" for beta access. Because they may get a refund ( and in fact many can't ) does not preclude the fact they paid for it to begin with. Because they are not out any extra money does not negate that they "paid" for the pre-order so they could get in the beta. If they wanted to wait 'til release, they would have waited and not "paid" for the pre-order.

I'm sure there are members here who require your job related services. Perhaps you should go focus on your duties.

Wrong you paid to reserve a copy of the game they are giveing you everything else includeing the  chance to be in the open beta.

You could be right about GOA having problems on launch day, since they are having problems with OB launch, but at the same time, realize they have a week to get the stuff fixed.

Until they fix it we dont actually have OB access. We paid for OB access. I can understand if the servers are unstable, the gameplay is bugged or some classes are nerfed to unplayability but by asking us to pay for OB there is a distinct implication that the 'ACCESS' part will be bug-free.

Actually since you paid it is more then an implication, it is a contract which they are now in breech of.

Keep supporting this type of crap service  and you will keep getting it from these companies that know they can treat you like BS and get away with it.

I have to laugh at all of the apologists that try to make it sound like it is your fault. Typical pre-teen response from them

Last time i checked open beta is not over. So really there not "in breech" of anything. They did not say you would get in on day 1.  GJ at trying to make a argument but you fail.

Because if not  i don't think it's really going to appeal to as many people as WoW.My GF already has said "oh that looks like a dude game".It needs to have some other great features besides the RVR PVP to take the throne.I'm not saying it's a bad game but in order to get the subs up it needs more appeal then just combat.

People like the idea that in WoW you can put your weopons to your side and do other things besides fight all the time. But other then that the game looks great I'm downloading it right now.

The game is made by Mythic, who had housing and "dancing" long before WoW was even made. That being said, WAR, as the name suggests, is about RvR. Its not so much a virtual world like Dark Age of Camelot was, and to an extent (despite the heavy instancing crap) WoW is. But, play housing could very well come later down the line.

Thats not the point the WAR ip dose not fit well with danceing. Its dark and gritty therefor no dancing and will never be dancing according to them altho theres some outher cool emotes.

No dances. Why whould you dance whern your in the middle of a war?

lol lag in beta with only a hand full off ppl ok they should be next to no lad wonder what it be like when there hundreds of ppl gacking each other

all the servers are almost full ......

I have a question for the people that have tried it how is the controls in game? I'm not taking point and click or wasd, i mean is it fluid like wow or clunky like vanguard.  How my character controls in pvp could be a game maker or breaker for me.

I think your getting art style and graphics mixed up. WAR has graphics on par or better than most of the other mmos out . One example would be if you look at the armor warhammer your character is  wearing each piece of armor where in wow most of your armor is just skinned on top of the player model. The detail on almost everything in warhammer is 2x as much as wow. Al tho there are other mmos with better graphics. That is not what they said that they wanted. They want a game that would run good on a broad range of pc not just top end ones( Its understandable from a business standpoint  if game wont run on someones computer playable they wont buy it). Were in beta still and everything you see from beta you cannot adjust the level of detail to the highest settings.

With that being said if you do not like the game because it is dark , gritty , or you don't like there hair that is another thing. That is your opinion on the artistic style and has nothing to do with graphics. But this is warhammer and that is how the warhammer ip looks (minus the over the top blood and gore that I'm really disappointed warhammer didn't include).

Don't get me wrong i like wow and think  looks good they did a incredible job making a game with a low polygon count look great. But it and most other games do not hold a candle to WAR in technical specs.

The graphics in wow is a lie.  Perception is not reality or is it.

Post made during the privew weenkend to give more insight.

State of the Preview Weekend
Folks,

I'll be expanding this as the weekend goes by but here's where we stand right now in terms of some of the issues that have been discussed, tossed around, thrown like a spear at our heads since the Preview Weekend started:

1) We peaked last night at around 30K concurrent players across our servers, that is obviously a great number. During that time the servers performed extremely well in terms of CPU usage and we never once came close to max usage so we know that we will meet our server cap populations for launch.

2) Regarding overall server stability we've pretty much exceeded our expectations. We've only had two full server crashes across all servers since we began. Neither crash was due to player load, CPU overload, code going brain dead, etc. but due to a minor issue on our part. The same is true for region crashes of which we only had two. Unfortunately, we had more scenarios crash (20) than we like but the number is still quite low considering we've been running 15 servers for more than a day.

3) Client crashes (crashes to desktop) are down from the last stage of closed beta and thanks to all the people playing, we've already fixed two issues that have caused some of the CTDs. We're not there yet but we are in better shape than we were last month and we will be even better at launch. Even now the CTDs are lower than some games were at release but having said that, it's not good enough for us and CTDs are issue #1A for us right now.

4) Pet AI and pathing is severely broken. The Preview Weekend patch (3.3) unfortunately borked the system. This is issue #1B for us. Even though this is a beta and new bugs/issues are to be expected, we messed up on this issue. We expect a quick turnaround on this next week. So please accept my apologies for this one, it should not have happened.

5) On the subject of graphical quality, SLI, etc., the problems that some players have reported are being focused on as well. From what we've been able to gather so far (other than on SLI which is a known issue), there is something weird happening with a small percentage of graphic cards as well as a possible issue which crept into this patch. We'll know more about it this week.

6) On some targeting issues, we're looking into that as well.

7) Regarding the GCD, we are not going to remove the GCD but we are continuing to look into some of the issues that have been reported with its use. As our closed beta testers have reported, our Combat Responsiveness Code made a huge difference to the game's feel and we're going to continue to look at the GCD and see if it needs tweaking along with any bug fixes that need to be done. I'll be posting more about this as well in the coming days/weeks. While the bugs with the GCD isn't our #1 priority, making combat feel even more responsive and fun is a major issue so it will continue to get looked at and tweaked over this last month and beyond.

So, that's it for now, more to come as the PW progresses as things arise. Overall we are thrilled with the response to the game on the Web, to our in-game surveys and from our feedback/bug tools. I'm glad we still have almost a month before launch but I am also quite happy where we are other than the problem with pathing/AI for which again I offer my apologies.

Mark
