Pick RIFT if you want an experience close to WoW, but still incredibly polished and with a hyper-active dev team.  It has some established end-game and an expansion is about to release.

TSW is a little different, but it won't be anything strange.  Some of the quests are involving (especially the research ones).  It's got a raid.

I wouldn't recommend Vanguard.  It still has low population and it's very buggy.

Global Agenda isn't an FPS, but it's got jetpacks and it's made by the same company.  Unfortunately, the game's pretty much dead these days.  They plan on making a GA2, though.

Team Fortress 2 isn't an MMO and doesn't have jetpacks, but it has some classes that do decent splash damage and it's a pretty easy game to get into.

Plus, both games are free to play.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is in the same vein and isn't entirely horrible.

Yeah, Grind of the New World 2.

I like the concept, and can't wait for another game that takes the concept but actually makes a good game from it.

Honestly, hipsters who hate on people hating hipsters that hate people that might be hipsters that hate people.. are too mainstream, so yeah.

Thread's shit, GG.

Money cant buy skills champ, lol

But if you don't pay, you can't play EVE (disregarding PLEX).

If you can't play EVE, you can't win EVE (by scamming people for 700bil, or becoming CSM and taunting suicidal players)

Therefore, if you don't pay, you can't win.

GW1 monk, using a prot prayer build.

I would say the GW1 mesmer, but after the mesmer update, some drama queen that mained mesmer exploded on the wiki page, which made playing a mesmer after that completely embarrasing.

Yes.

Expansions are pay to win because you can't win the expansion without buying it.

Buying a game is pay to win.  You can't win the game without buying it, right?  You dirty pirate, you

Life is pay to win because you need to buy food to continue living, and you need to spend money to make money.

MMORPG.com is pay to win because if you didn't have an internet connection, you couldn't attempt to make terrible threads.

When we talk about the MMORPG.com hipsters, there's a fine line between 'difficulty' and 'inconvenience'. Many people on this wonderful site believe that a difficult game should have an unfriendly user interface, where a feature that provides convenience (like Legend of Grimrock's automap) is thought of as 'against the spirit of the game', or in MMORPG.com gentleman words, 'carebear'.

The thoughts clearly stem from the fact that these hipsters believe themselves to be better people because they once played a video game on their personal computer some time ago that did not have this automap, and thus forced them to draw out an aerial view of a fictional video game level on a piece of graph paper. This obviously makes these computer gaming veterans 'hard'.

A game that's designed well does not need to enforce artificial difficulty on the player, because the difficulty wouldn't be in the player's interaction with the game (the UI), but in the actual content of the game.

I want difficult games. But I don't see games without convenience features as difficult; instead, I see them as annoying and primitive.

There's this racing MMO called Drift City.  Not sure how good it is, but it's F2P and supports some form of clans called 'crews'.

I would have said Vanguard right off the bat.

After the F2P conversion though, Vanguard didn't seem to get as many players back in as I'd hoped, and it's still very buggy.  Add to that the state of the dev team (which still seems like a joke) and it's still a bad game.

I want to suggest Vanguard because deep down I know it's a game built on really neat concepts.  However, the execution (and maintainence) of the game is so horrible that I can't realistlcally suggest it to anyone except people who are already really invested into the game or who are masochists that love interacting with bugs.

LotRO has an active dev team, some neat content, and has a much more lively community than current Vanguard.  Plus, it has fewer bugs.  LotRO has some glaring problems, but if it were a choice between LotRO and Vanguard, LotRO wins hands down.

People who suggest Vanguard are probably reminiscing about their past with the game, but I am writing this from a current perspective.  Currently, you'll have more fun in LotRO.

You said you were finished with WoW, but WoW's LFR raid difficulty sounds like it would be a great fit for your playstyle.  It's much more forgiving than normal mode raids (many mechanics are tuned for lightly-organized groups), and each raid is split into parts so you can have hour-long sessions and still kill a few bosses.  Nothing does WoW-style gameplay better than WoW, so it's something to keep in mind if you really like the game but you can't do normal modes yet.

RIFT is also a good choice.  On PVE servers, Guardians and Defiants can group up / raid with each other, join each other's guilds, send tells to each other, etc - as if there were no faction separation to begin with. I'm not exactly sure about the raid sizes, but I believe that there is still a distinction between 10 man and 20 man progression.  RIFT certainly has enough people playing to field the 20 mans; you just have to join a guild that can support 20 mans, make your own guild and recruit, or start finding other guilds for yours to collaborate with.

There's always going to be specs that are more optimized than others.  I think that the (current) content is difficult enough to warrant use of optimal builds.  I'm sure you can find cookie cutter builds, but they're cookie cutter for a reason - because they are proven to be effective.

RaiderZ is pretty similar to TERA.

Now, you mentioned Dragon Nest.  If you liked Dragon Nest, then maybe you'll like Vindictus (or even Dungeon Fighter Online).  Both Nexon games, so you know what to expect from playing Dragon Nest, and they both have plenty of action (Vindictus being most like DN, while DFO is like an arcade brawler turned MMO).

No offense, but in the time you took to type up that OP, you could have been at least applying to a good gaming community that meets your age group and interests.

Use Google, official game forums, unofficial game forums, and Vent/TS/Mumble/whatever you hipsters use to voice communicate these days.  With your list of requirements in hand, compare them with each community to see if you find one that's a good fit.  Then hop on that vent and start asking questions about the community.  Get to know the players.  If something creeps you out or their leader sounds like an antisocial neckbeard, you can bounce and go to the next one without any harm done.

@Four0Six - Hold up a second there.  Are you talking about server-wide community?  Let's clarify that.  What do you know about your server-wide community?  Is it the chatter in a global chat channel that defines the 'community' for you?  Do you browse through guild drama and call that the community?  Or are you actively participating in a community that unites guilds across the server and hosts events for everyone (which go from PvE to PvP and far beyond)?  Because if you're using anything but the latter to define the 'server-wide community', you really have no idea what you're talking about.

Want to do something for your server-wide community besides just talking about how it might get damaged by other guilds?  That's one thing.  But there's no reason to complain about it being damaged when you have no stake in it anyway, and you're doing nothing except complaining about guilds on MMORPG.com.

MMORPGs?  Too mainstream.

Full loot sandbox PVP MMORPGs?  Too mainstream.

MMORPG.com?  Yep, too mainstream as well.

I'm so hipster that real life hipsters and MMORPG.com hipsters are too mainstream for me.

Oh yeah, and I'm so cool and edgy because I prefer a different type of massively multiplayer online role playing game than you do.  That obviously makes my views correct and everyone else's wrong.

If you don't like it, there should be a way to unsubscribe from the mailing list.

Join a group that does the same things you like doing.

Finding a community isn't stressful or time consuming.  Do research.

I prefer this method.

They both have merits, even though both games are bad.

If you want something that closely mirrors D2, then TL2 is probably your game.  The problem is that it not only mirrors the good, but also the bad of D2.  D2 was a pretty bad game (if you actually went ahead and played it, instead of just talking about 'how good it was' on MMORPG.com, you'd understand why) and there are some design decisions that should have been left in the past and not brought into new games.  Runic innovates on the formula, but unlike Blizzard, they don't attempt to strike out the bad design already inherent in the formula (not that they were successful - read on).

If you want a game that went away from the D2 path, D3 is for you.  Of course, deviating from D2 brings its own set of problems (which aren't just rose-tinted glasses - quite a few 'evolutions' of the concept didn't get realized right in D3).  Blizzard is pretty good at removing the bad from previous iterations (see how WoW was developed and the design decisions that went into vanilla), and they proved it here.  However, they introduced a whole new set of bad that polarized the community (who were admittedly D2 fanboys).  Blizzard innovates like Runic did, but they really need to weigh out each decision before they go full-speed with it.  They learned their mistake - see paragon levels.  Let's hope they continue to get it right.

OP, please read the PM I sent you. If any of you have adblock but need assistance, PM me. I can fix certain things that might be bothering you if you run adblock on this site.

On the background images: PM me.
