Academic Research on Player Motivations
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 1/29/12 3:48:28 PM
I've taken several motivational assessments regarding gaming. This was the most strange. I suspect subtle language issues? Anyway, good luck with your research! |

Thanks for sharing. I've never played Wurm. The game sounds great to me. I love wandering and exploring. But bad community can ruin anything. If there is no mechanic for "reserving" resources then the tree did not belong to him. Maybe the community has some uncoded rules of ediquette but it sounds like you did everything appropriate before chopping. Did anyone else in global chat support his assertion that what you did was innappropriate? |

I solo in most other mmorpgs. Not Ryzom. Although soloing in Ryzom is technically possible, it is extemely slow. As mentioned above, all you need is one other player. There are no classes so you don't need to find a tank or healer. Any two players, working together, can make exciting progress in a playing session. Because it has a great community I am happy to group with others (something I can't say about most other games). That being said, the game is free to play (no cash shop) until you get any skill up to 125. Playing solo that would take many weeks. So give it a try. |

No, they are not the future of mmorpgs although they will continue to be popular. Action-oriented video games have always been available and very popular. The rise of "action mmorpgs" is due to the success of mmorpgs features. Mmorpg features are now becoming common in action games. Those who most enjoy action mmorpgs are those who used to play other types of action games, not traditional mmorpg players. Although we can expect to see more and more action mmorpgs this expansion will come at the expense of other action games, not other mmorpgs. Customers who are most concerned about the "Massive" and "Role Play" in mmorpg are not generally crying out for more action. There will continue to be games which support their desires rgardless of how many action mmorpgs are churned-out. |

Since there is nothing else to do, feel free to speculate on what "latex nuns" might be. 1) NPC faction based in a former convent, wearing S&M gear, specialized in martial arts. It could totally happen. |

All ratings are subjective. I happen to agree with the review. I should mention that I enjoyed the original versional as well. Most of the updates are real improvements. Unfortunately they removed the permadeath option which I enjoyed the first time around. The cash shop price for unlocking the restricted content (act 2 or 3, don't remember which) was a whole four dollars last I checked. I can't comment on the price of anything else because I never felt the need to buy anything else (although you will need to spend at least ten dollars just because that is the minimum for a purchase). |

Jade Dynasty: Legacy Expansion Announced

That teaser did nothing for me. Without an overhaul of the basic game mechanics for combat and progression I will not be returning. |

What is the maximum group size in TOR? I have a bunch of friends that I get together with every Thursday night for some mmorpg fun. We have always played games that allow us to group together. That can be anywhere from 6 to 8 people on a given night. Is TOR going to be a game we can play? |

Lol! I don't know what to make of this video - thoughts?
General Discussion « ArcheAge 11/19/11 6:26:34 PM
That was a sad discovery. I've quit two other asian-developed games after they added crap like this. If the devs think this is ok then who knows what other immersion-breaking elements are also to be found and what will be added later. Oh well. There are other games to spend my time and money on. |

How engaging is the pve combat? Is it dangerous or trivial? I ask for two reason. I read a review which said the pve combat in Loong was not challenging. I just quit another asian-designed game over the same issue. Suppose the game gives you a quest to go kill 10 wolves. In a typical western game it might take eight seconds to kill a wolf assuming I use all of my special attacks. If I get distracted the wolf might kill me instead. In some asian games (like SotNW and Jade Dynasty) it would take only three seconds to kill the wolf using nothing but auto attack. In those games your special skills and attacks are only needed for bosses and pvp. I'm sure there are exceptions but this has been my experience. Which of those two descriptions more closely describes the pve combat in Loong? |

Yes, I want days and nights. As others mentioned a good world design has the environment change at night (different mobs or behaviors). I will go one step farther. I like the night to be really dark so that travelling feels dangerous. |

Originally posted by Kaerigan Honestly, games of this genre from asia usually have outstanding combat animations. Where they fall down is character custimization. I'm glad we got to see that this game does it right. Lots of customization - within a realistic frame work. In other words you can look any way you want ... as long as you look like a real chinese. I didn't see anyone running around town with pink or green anime haircuts.
But I too would like to see some combat footage to see how long a fight lasts. If mobs go down in two seconds I will be worried that this is another title like Jade Dynasty where levelling is just a matter of parking yourself someplace where the mobs spawn fast enough to kill 30+ per minute. I hope the combat is as realistic as the art style. |

Originally posted by cheshyrecat CCP has already perfected advancement without xp. The system used in EVE, or something very similar, might be what they plan for WoD. Of course many don't like that system for a variety of reasons. I think it could work just fine. Anything would be better than having to watch vampires farming werewolf spawns on every street corner. |

I finally figured out why I don't enjoy LOTRO.
General Discussion « Lord of the Rings Online 10/04/11 7:35:49 PM
It is all a matter of personal preference. I liked the armor in LotRO because it generally looked like something that could actually be useful enough to wear. The cosmetic options allowed you to change your appearance completely anytime you wanted. But you always looked reasonable and believeable. It sounds like the OP enjoys the "high fantasy" style. Lucky for him that most mmorpgs go that way. You can have gigantic football-style shoulder pads and spikes on your spikes in most other games. You will not find me playing those games but to each his own. |

TMBG are awesome but I'll wait until they make an appearance in some other game that I might actually want to play. |

MMOs with subscription fees... what are you paying for?
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 9/29/11 5:57:11 PM
Originally posted by empyros If you are half my age or twice my age I would expect you to view my definition of maturity as skewed. Nothing wrong with that. We each know who we like to associate with. When I want to go out and have fun I usually hang with my friends, not my children's friends. That is not a judgement against them, just an admission of reality. When I played LoTRO it did have a great community, but that was before ftp. I have not tried it since. |

MMOs with subscription fees... what are you paying for?
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 9/29/11 5:27:03 PM
I pay $15 a month to avoid playing with people who can't or wont pay $15 a month. It has nothing to do with money per se. The communities are not to my liking in ftp games. I have played many games with and without sub fees and the one constant I have always found is that games with sub fees have a more mature community. The difference is generally striking. |

How many new staff members will mmorpg.com hire to cover the new content? None? Then there WILL be less coverage on actual mmorpgs. |
